National Lutheran Schools Week By Jo Ann Emerson, Preschool Director
January 26—February 1 is National Lutheran Schools Week. The theme – Joy:Fully Lutheran
– is based upon I Thessalonians 5:16-24. Here at Trinity Lutheran Church Preschool we are
focusing on verses 16-18:
When you ask children, and many adults, to define the word “joy,” usually “happy” comes to
mind. But can we really be happy always? In all circumstances? No! The true meaning of joy,
specifically Christian joy, is this:
a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the
beauty of Christ in the Word and in the world.
Even during sad times, we can recognize that Christ is at work, that he has a plan for us, that
he will continually bestow grace upon us despite life’s circumstances.
As preschool educators, our challenge is to teach these verses in I Thessalonians (like all
things we teach) in a concrete way. Our message during Lutheran Schools Week will be
J.O.Y. – Jesus first. Others second. You last.
(Continued on page 4)
Be joyful always,
Pray continually,
Give thanks in all circumstances
for this is God’s will for you
in Christ Jesus.

Secret Sponsor Fundraiser
When you participate in the
Secret Sponsor Fundraiser,
you not only contribute to
the youth who attend LVR,
but connect with them on a
deeper level too! To sign up,
fill out our online form by
February 15. See the link in
the eNews or scan the QR
code above.
After we receive the com-
mitments from sponsors in
February, you will receive a
note about the student you
are sponsoring-BUT you
must keep it a secret! On or
before June 1, sponsors will
give Beth Stephens a picture
of you/your family/group
with a letter written to the
designated student. Each
student will open these
while they are at camp. Af-

Trinity and LVR
Trinity is committed to the
importance of the LVR ex-
perience, so much so that
we offer to cover the cost
of incoming freshmen to
attend. This means that stu-
dents who are confirmed in
April 2020 will be able to
attend LVR free of charge.
Through fundraising and
our youth ministry budget,
our goal is to limit the fi-
nancial strain, so all stu-
dents have the opportunity
to join us! This year, we will
be traveling to LVR June 14
-20 and are expecting a
group of 15-20 students
along with 3 adults to at-
tend from Trinity. If you
have not had a youth attend
LVR, you may be curious as
to what it may cost to send
one student to camp for a
week:
• $525…The total cost of
one student to attend
• $250…The total cost of
one adult leader to at-
tend
• $170…The cost families
pay to send a student
• $70…The cost of
one day of LVR per
student

What is LVR and why do we go?
Lutheran Valley Retreat
(LVR) is a camp up in the
Rocky Mountains near
Woodland Park, Colorado.
It is associated with the
LCMS through the Nation-
al Lutheran Outdoor Min-
istry Association
(NLOMA). For the past 44
years, churches from the
Kansas City area have tak-
en a group of high school
students to LVR for a week
of connecting with God,
stepping out of their com-
fort zone, and worshiping
together. KC area DCEs
plan a week where students
are challenged to look at
their lives with a faith lens
and to see God, them-
selves, and each other in a
new way. Students spend
time in cabin groups, Bible
study, worship, service pro-
jects, and fun mountain
activities while they are
there.

tional meeting in June. This
will be a great time for stu-
dents and their sponsors to
meet! Our goal is that fi-
nances are never a barrier
for a student to experience
LVR. We are hoping to raise
$10,000 from this fundrais-
er. You might not be able to
make the commitment to
support the full cost of stu-
dent on your own; perhaps
a Bible study or group could
work together to raise $250
to $500. You do not have to
give a certain amount to be
a sponsor, those are just
simply suggestions. Any-
thing you can give will be a
blessing to our youth!
Thank you for your contri-
butions. I am excited for
you to connect with our
youth through this event! If
you have any questions,

New member classes are starting in January at both the Mission and Shawnee campuses.
These classes are designed for anyone who desires to become a member of Trinity (including
those who are already Lutheran). If you are interested, please contact Pastor Mark at

campus classes.
New Member Classes By Pastor Mark Schulz and Pastor Phil Cook
J esus –Jesus first
looks like reading
the Bible, going to
church, and being kind to
people just like Jesus shows
us in the Bible. Jesus first
sounds like singing praises
to him, sharing the good
news with your friends and
family, and praying.
O thers –Others
second looks like
sharing toys with
your friends and listening to
your friends when they are
talking. Others second
sounds like “Would you like
to play?” and “I’m sorry
you’re having a bad day!
How can I help?”
Y ou –You last
looks like waiting
patiently for oth-
ers to go before you and
putting the interests of oth-
ers before your desires.
You last sounds like telling
the truth even when you
don’t want to and admitting
when you are wrong.
By placing Jesus first, Others second, and You last, we can get to the end goal – it feels like
JOY! May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power
of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope (Romans 15:13).
