1 The Messenger OCTOBER 2016; Vol. 05, Issue 10 From Pastor Kleinschmidt t has been nearly 10 years since the new church building was dedicated on October 29, 2006. At this milestone it is good to reflect on what the church is and what it is not. Our congregation made a huge leap of faith to move forward and construct a new sanctuary and church building. Any project of a scale like this that a congregation endeavors to accomplish can lead to wringing of hands and uncertainty of what the future holds. Our comfort here is that whether we worship in a 108 year- old church or a 10 year- old church, the Church remains the same. As God’s people we gather around Jesus Christ our head and are individually members of his body. The people of God who have faith in Jesus Christ are the church. That church is located in our community, right here, at St. Jakobi. Things can be going great or they can be going horribly wrong and yet still we know that the church will always remain. Sometimes congregations grow and sometimes they dwindle. But that’s not an indication of the health of a congregation. The health of the congregation is seen in the individual members. Are they attending to the hearing of God’s Word? Are they growing in love and service? Are they growing in faith and trust? Jesus is the source of a healthy congregation. We don’t look to buildings and stained glass. They don’t make up the church of Christ and they don’t show us what is healthy either. As a congregation our eyes are focused on he who is the one mediator between God and men, the God-man, Jesus Christ. But even as we gather to worship in our “new” church building we are reminded of the past and those who have gone before use. We see the sacrifices that the church, the people of God, had made in the past. They had stained glass to show the glory of God and they constructed a beautiful Altar, Pulpit, and Baptismal font. We see these things but the greatest reminder of those who have gone before is at the Altar rail. The semi-circular Altar rail serves to remind us that the circle is not complete. The circle of the Altar rail finds its completion in heaven. As we kneel to receive the body and blood of the Lamb of God we join in worship with the angels, archangels, and all the company of heaven. The innumerable company of heaven even now includes the people of God, the people of St. Jakobi who have died in this Christian faith. The church gathers at the Communion rail and we have union with our Savior Jesus Christ and we have union in worship with our dearly departed loved ones. The church goes on. The church, the people of God will live forever. Buildings are built, buildings are destroyed. The things of this world grow and fall but the church of God lives for all of eternity. ST. JAKOBI NEWS & EVENTS __________________________________________________________________________

RURAL & SMALL TOWN MINISTRY CONFERENCE

On October 15th, beginning with registration at 8am, LCMS Rural and Small Town Ministry will present “Engaging Your Community” at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bonduel. This EYC is geared for single and multi-point parishes in rural and small town settings. Ideally, a pastor and three to four lay leaders will attend together. Congregational leaders will examine their communities and consider ways they can serve the unique needs of their particular communities. Participants will identify personal and congregational assets they have in place and make plans for utilizing their resources to engage their respective communities. One of the important themes of the event will be on building and strengthening partnerships as multi-point parishes and individual congregations explore ways to work together for the needs of their communities.

Many congregations today are concerned about shrinking membership and fewer children and families in worship. There is no “one size fits all” solution however congregational leaders will be encouraged as they see new opportunities for engaging their communities and are filled with hope for the future.

If you are interested in attending, talk to Pastor and check the bulletin board in church. The presentation will go from 8:30am-3pm and lunch will be provided. Cost of attendance is $25.

POTATO PANCAKE DINNER Thank you to everyone who helped make the Potato Pancake Dinner a success. If you have never been on that committee, you may not understand the amount of planning that goes into. Our thanks should go to them and everyone else who peeled potatoes, cooked, served, and cleaned.

REFORMATION SERVICE On Saturday, October 29th, at 5:30 at St. James Lutheran Church there will be a joint Reformation Service hosted by all the LCMS congregations in our area. Our regular Saturday evening service will be cancelled that night in order to help people attend this special service. Please consider coming to this as we celebrate the grace given to us in Christ Jesus by faith alone as revealed by Scripture alone.

REV. JOHN EYER PIANO CONCERT Come and enjoy a program of solo piano music presented by Rev. John Eyer (pastor of St. Paul Lutheran - Stony Hill and Zion Lutheran in Gresham). This performance will take place on Sunday afternoon, October 2nd, at 4:00 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. LIBRARY NEWS PLANTING SEEDS

(Book Section 1) In the small Illinois town of Bradbury, change doesn't come often, and it certainly doesn't come easily. So when Pastor Fletcher hires Emily Duke as the new choir director at Zion Lutheran Church, he unknowingly sets in motion a chain of events that turns the life of his congregation upside down. The crusty church secretary, Mrs. Scheinberg, must learn to adjust her curmudgeonly ways. Zion's talented but pompous organist, Evan Ebner, must recognize his shortcomings. Emily must come to terms with her past. Even Pastor Fletcher must face reality when his world is shaken by the baggage Emily brings and by the handsome Zachary Brandt who pursues her.

PORTALS OF PRAYER The Church purchases 125 Portals of Prayer and 5 copies that are in Large Print. They are free for you to take. This little daily devotional book has a Bible reading and Psalm with a devotion that ties to the reading. There are also prayers in the back that are tied to the Church Year and for each day of the week. You can pick up your copy by the Guest Book or on the Bulletin table. Your old Portals of Prayer can be placed in the basket and they will be donated to Christians who need devotional material.
