The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland October 2015 THANKFUL AND PRAYERFUL St. Paul writes from his heart, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now, being confident that he who began a good work in you will carry it through to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:3-6). THANKING GOD FOR YOU As Elise and I approach our life’s transition from full time pastoral ministry, Paul’s complimentary words to his beloved members at Philippi; are our exact love sentiments to you. We thank God for our cherished Good Shepherd memories. For twelve years you have been our “faith family.” I am so thankful you entrusted me to be your pastor and shepherd. With the ministry gifts the Lord has nurtured in my life, it has been a personal grace privilege to minister Christ’s love and care at significant times in your life. You and I have shared many memorable moments, both happy and not so joyful. Yet, our God is faithful; let’s never forget Jarrett Harman’s 2010 Confirmation verse from Matthew: “I am with you always, to the very end” (28:20). Whatever occurrences we’ve experienced since 2003, you and I will always be blessed with an Immanuel God whose sustaining presence is with us. A GOSPEL PARTNERSHIP THROUGH CHANGE So much has transpired these dozen years within our Good Shepherd family. Who remembers the 2003 Sanctuary groundbreaking and worshipping at Rosa Parks for ten months? If there is one re-occurring theme that best distinguishes my Good Shepherd pastorate is the word change. The Lord purposely brought about his many changes at Good Shepherd so we would be challenged in faith, as well as experienced anew his grace. Case in point, there was a significant pastoral leadership change when Pr. Don and Marcia Schaefer left after twenty-two blessed years. Their departure was followed by multiple changes of staff over the next several years, including the gifted ministries of three Directors of Music, the conclusion of Sr. Robie’s excellent ministry when she commenced her marvelous work at LMS and changes within our church office staff. For over ten years we were blessed with Evelyn Dunn as Church Secretary until her retirement in 2013. Today, God has gifted our Office with Mrs. Sarah McCord’s talented skills, along with Nancy Wald and Lu Otto. In 2004 the size of our Sanctuary was enlarged. And since 2007 our Sunday worship settings changed with a new hymnal. And for over a decade Good Shepherd has experienced an ongoing change of membership with new members joining and existing members relocating from the Olney community. And recall all the congregational funerals we’ve had, especially our most recent with Jarrett! Yet through all these changes the Lord has kept us together to partner in the work of ministry by making disciples for Jesus Christ. OUR PRAYERS As the church soon begins the pastoral vacancy after October 4, Elise and I will follow St. Paul’s example with unceasing prayer, “in all my prayers for you” (v. 4), as we pray the following intentions. We are praying for Pastors Ron Friedrich and David Betzner for the Lord to bless them with a shepherd’s heart. For the Call Committee as Christ guides them with his direction, wisdom and a sustained heart. For our lay leaders to have a servant heart as each committee and board fulfills their ministry tasks. For our Shepherd’s Care Preschool Staff that Jesus blesses our Director and Teachers with a passionate teaching heart. And we are definitely praying for Good Shepherd’s next Pastor, his wife and family. That he would be a man blessed after God’s own choosing and loving heart to serve humbly and faithfully. And above all, Elise and I are praying the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will always be a church family who will love and be loved, forgive and be forgiven, remember the lost in Christ and feed the homeless, care and be cared for by the Gospel. Thank YOU for permitting us to be among you as one who serves. We could not have asked the Lord to bless and complete our forty years of full time ministry with a better church family. To God, be the glory! “And now, to him who is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine, according to his power at work within us, to God be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Thanks to Pastor Pat and Elise

It is with sadness that the members of Good Shepherd must now say goodbye to two wonderful people who have been our friends and co-workers for Christ for a lot of years. We have shared many joys and happiness but also sadness, sickness, and loss. You were always there watching over our flock praying for us and with us. There was the excitement of a wedding, the exuberance when another child or adult was baptized, or any of the smaller but “important to us” things that happened. You have taught and guided us in your own gentle way. Please know that we will miss both of you so much. We wish you the very best in your future plans, and much happiness in your new home and living closer to your family members. Our love goes with you. Although it will be difficult to say goodbye, we look forward to celebrating our time with you on Sunday, October 4 at two special services. We pray that God will bountifully bless your next endeavors in your new location.

With love, Your Good Shepherd Family

We Will Never Forget

Jarrett was born on February 29, 1996 in Takoma Park, Maryland. He liked being a leap year baby because it made his birthday special. He took great delight in saying with a twinkle in his eye that he was only 2 or 4 years old. Jarrett started school at Calvary Lutheran School in Silver Spring, MD. Most of his recess time was spent running around and around the playground, foreshadowing perhaps, his future in cross country and track and field. He started MCPS in 3rd grade and eventually graduated from Sherwood High School in 2014. While in high school, he ran cross country for three years and did track and field for four years. He took one fall season off from cross country to play football, but managed to find his way back to what he excelled at. All the years his family spent watching him jump

over fire hydrants, fences, and picnic tables finally paid off when he took up the long jump and the triple jump his senior year. Jarrett’s first job was at Rockville Ice Arena. He loved it because he got to skate and learned how to sharpen hockey skates. After a while, he got tired of skating in circles and cleaning the men’s room at the rink so he found a job at Urban Barbecue. He worked there for quite awhile but left for a job at Ledos because he wanted to be a server. Jarrett began to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and made extra money shoveling and plowing in the winter as well as working for his uncle and his father doing residential construction work. Eventually he was able to make and save enough money to start buying and selling dirt bikes. He sold two dirt bikes to afford his beloved motorcycle.

Jarrett met his girlfriend, Holly Arthur, after her family moved to Olney three years ago. It was definitely true love, as evidenced by his willingness to put on a suit for homecoming dances and a tux for prom without complaint. Holly and Jarrett spent hours just hanging out, sharing family dinners, and cheering each other on at cheer and running events. After graduating Jarrett began attending classes at Montgomery College with the goal of eventually transferring to the University of Maryland for a degree in engineering. Jarrett was always dedicated to his family and loved nothing more than camping, jet skiing, and playing basketball, racquetball, or dodge ball as a family.

For the Month of October The fall session of Sunday School has begun. We begin our classes in the Narthex each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. We will again be having our annual “Bring a Friend to Sunday School Day” in October - date yet to be decided. Watch the Sunday bulletin or the Wednesday weekly Email Blast from Sarah for that date. Due to the celebration for Pastor Pat, there will be NO Sunday School on Sunday, October 4. There will be only one Worship service at 10:00 a.m. on that day. The Preschool will be having a fundraiser entitled “Display My Art” with our Sunday School doing a project for this fundraiser. You should have received an explanatory letter on September 27 about this fundraiser. If you should need another copy, please contact me. Finally about Operation Christmas Child: Please try to fill a shoebox for OCC. You will find the information forms in your church mailbox. Need a shoebox??? There are empty shoeboxes in the Family Life Wing by the three large Sunday School metal cabinets. Plastic containers of that size also work well.

Operation Christmas Child

Boxes Due by November 15, 2015

It is now time to begin preparing for the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. We will not be having a Packing Party this

year. We did not get as many items as usual last year to put into the boxes so nearly everything we did receive was used to fill them. My suggestion is to donate a box from your household. We have a few OCC shoeboxes but plastic shoe boxes are also acceptable. The recipients can use them for many things when they are received. Bring your completed shoebox to church on Sunday, November 15. The Sunday School’s MISSION Project until the middle of November will once again be Operation Christmas Child. Literature has been handed out in everyone's mailbox. The age categories for both boys and girls are 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. As a reminder, the following are of some of the items that can be purchased for the shoeboxes: School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries). Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc. Other: T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries). DO NOT INCLUDE: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food, out-of–date candy; liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

Thank you,

Men’s Work Coats Needed

Good Shepherd will be collecting gently used men’s work coats for our Christmas Eve distribution in Langley Park in cooperation with Cristo Rey and Pastor Margarita. We are looking for Men’s work coats (insulated flannel hoodies, insulated vests, fleece canvas shirts, denim jackets, etc.). These coats are for the workers in the Langley Park area and they primarily do labor-related jobs (landscaping, construction, etc) so coats / jackets they can work in, hats and gloves are an extra bonus. The “Coat Drive” box will be in a large well marked box near the front door after Thanksgiving.

LCGS Care Team The LCGS Care Team was formed to help serve the needs of members during a pastoral vacancy. The Care Team is available for visits at homes, hospitals, or other places as needed. We are happy to sit with you, pray with you, talk with you, etc. We have also purchased two portable communion kits so that those who desire communion do not have to be present at church to receive the sacrament. To contact the Care Team call the church office at (301)774-9125 and let Sarah know of your need. Sarah will contact Elders who will then initiate contact with the Care Team. During non-office hours, you should contact your Elder directly who will then help initiate the process. (This is a great reason to know who your Elder is). Check the bulletin board beside of the office where all the members are listed under their Elder’s Name. If you have any questions about the LCGS Care Team feel free to ask one of the members. The members of the Care Team are:

• Barbara Gordon • Steve Gordon • Marion Ivkovich • Sandy Langer • John Maisel • Pat Maisel • David Reinhold • Karen Ricagno • Jill Ruspi • Jackie Schulten • Ann Sprague • Connie Strachan • Jim Taylor • Kathie Taylor • Tom Wilk

CLOTHING CENTER

Donations: If you are donating clothes, please leave them in the designated area in the Family Life Wing. PLEASE, PLEASE make sure the clothes are placed in BAGS or BOXES that are STRONG ENOUGH to withstand movement from place to place and are not too heavy for senior volunteers to lift. Thank you for your donations. The last six months of 2015 have been covered for transporting donated clothes to the IWCC. Thank you volunteers for your continued support of this very important ministry. The IWCC is located at the former Broome Middle School, 751 Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville. Clothing should be picked up at the church during the second and third weeks of the month. The days and hours of donation drop-off are Tuesday through Friday from 9:00-4:30 p.m., and Saturday 9:00-2:00 p.m. IWCC is open year round, except for the Federal holidays. Snow policy follows that of the Federal Government. If there are any questions, please email Bill Plitt at [email protected] or call him at 301-774-9502. Thank you, volunteers, for transporting clothes to the IWCC.

Chase Shelter Please Help

HELP FEED THE HOMELESS! The next opportunity for Good Shepherd to provide meals to the Chase Shelter and bag lunches to the Men’s Emergency Shelter in Rockville will be on October 31, 2015. This service project requires the work of many hands, and we are appreciative of all who have contributed in the past. Your volunteer opportunities include: 1. Provide a hot casserole for the Saturday supper. NOTE: The casserole does not need to be home made; grocery store lasagna is quite fine. Please bring the casserole to the family life wing kitchen on or prior to 2 p.m. on October 31. You can bring a warm casserole on the day of delivery, or bring one to be heated prior to the date of delivery (just be sure to label it for Chase Shelter). You should prepare the casserole in a disposable dish as it will NOT be returned to you. 2. Please sign up for other supplies needed on the list; bring them prior to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, and label items for Chase Shelter. These supplies include cold cuts, cheese slices, bread, drinks, fruit, snacks, brownie mix, etc. (the list of needs varies each time so be sure to check the bulletin board).

It is important to sign up because we purchase items that we do not have and this becomes costly. You can also inform Gaetan Brunetto of your intentions at the phone number and email address mentioned below. On Saturday, October 31 at 2 p.m. we will be meeting to prepare everything, make brownies, assemble lunches pack and load the items for delivery. It takes about 1-1½ hours and is usually a lot of fun. If you can participate or have any questions, please contact Gaetan Brunetto at 301-814-8001 or at [email protected]. Students who participate are eligible to receive service hours credit for school (bring your forms with you). Your dedication to this outreach ministry is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all who have contributed both their time and donations in the past.

“A Fine Fix”

Written by Gale Deitch

The author is coming! The author is coming! So join us all in the family life wing to meet Gale and Trudie Fine who often finds herself in a fine fix. In her purple apron with orange polka dots she sets out to be one of the best caterers in Washington, D.C. and she ends up trying to solve a mystery. Just who did give Mr. Schwartz the brownies laced with peanuts? A killer to someone with peanut allergies! And why would someone do that? So fix yourself a Sangria, bring your favorite Santoku knife and let's dissect this book. Trudie will be there to guide our way.

The Lunch Bunch will meet next on

Emily Cottone, Director 301-570-7566

Dear Members of LCGS, It is so nice to be back at school. We missed our preschoolers and are thrilled to welcome our new students. Each morning the hallway is filled with laughter and excitement. Thank you to our wonderful teachers for creating such a sweet and nurturing home away from home. We are busy making new friends, learning the rules of school, talking about ourselves and our families and most importantly - how God made each of us special and unique. The week of October 4th is Fire Safety Week and we are looking forward to a visit from the Sandy Spring Fire Department. Our field trip to Clark’s Elioak Farm is on October 23rd. We will visit the animals in the petting farm and take a hayride to the pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin. We encourage families to pack a lunch and stay for a picnic as a school. It is always a very fun day!
