Dear CCU Ohana
Everything is a gift The degree to which we are awake to this truth is a measure ofour gratefulness and gratefulness is a measure of our aliveness-David Steidle-Rast
I came across this quote recently in a review of a new book entitled Grateful TheTransformative Power of Giving Thanks In it renowned church historian DianaButler Bass (who has been studying spiritual practice and congregationalrevitalization for several decades) commends gratitude as an essential spiritualdiscipline often missing from our modern practice of Christianity Bass explores theways an individual practice of gratitude can connect us to God others and creationBut she also emphasizes how gratitude can be a powerful communal experiencenoting that communities who practice gratitude together not only thrive but alsoseem to have great capacity for transforming their communities
As we approach our national season of Thanksgiving I hope well also have time toreflect on our own congregational practice of gratitude Our theme for November willbe Come to the Feast as we focus on the image of the kingdom of God as a greatfeast a place where our deepest hunger is saited our greatest thirst quenched andour desire for belonging met with open arms
On November 4 well celebrate the good news that when we gather around Christstable we dine with those who have gone before us (Dont forget to bring a smallmemento of anyone you wish to remember for our remembrance altar) OnNovember 18 our seminarian Trent Lockhart will lead a discussion during our adulteducation time (830-930am) about the meaning of communion
Also in November our church council will be working on a budget for our missionand ministry in 2019 This too will be a practice of gratitude as we will have at ourdisposal the results of your enthusiastic and generous response to our recentstewardship campaign We the leadership of CCU are humbled by yourfaithfulness and eagerness to support this congregation We give thanks for you andlook forward to tending to the happy task of deciding how we can grow our ministryserve our neighbors improve our facility and enhance our outreach in the yearahead You are making all this possible
For that reason and so many others I look forward to spending the month with youawakening to the truth of our blessedness giving thanks and celebrating ouralivenessgifts from God and blessings every one
Happy Thanksgiving
With alohaPastor Liz
