The Reverend Paul Egensteiner Elected MNYS Bishop

On Friday, May 17th the Voting Members of the Metropolitan New York Synod, of the Evangelical Lu-

theran Church in America, elected The Rev. Paul Egensteiner to be the next bishop of the synod, suc-

ceeding Bishop Rimbo who resigned in January of last year. Since then the synod has been led by the

Rev. Donald McCoid as interim bishop.

The initial balloting identified seven potential candidates, with the field narrowing on subsequent bal-

lots. The fifth and final ballot elected the Rev. Paul T. Egensteiner of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in

Pleasantville, NY with 250 votes; the Rev. Christopher Mietlowski of Gustavus Adolphus Church in

Manhattan received 198 votes. Pastor Paul Egensteiner has spearheaded a number of community and

faith-based initiatives, including directorship of Pinecrest Lutheran Leadership School.

"I am incredibly pleased and confident in the selection of The Rev. Paul Egensteiner as Bishop of the

Metropolitan New York Synod," states Bishop Donald McCoid. "I could not think of a more capable

leader to continue our Church's radically welcoming path forward."

Bishop-elect. Egensteiner, remarked. "It is a huge honor to have been elected to serve not only the

MNYS but also the ELCA in this way," adding "Former Bishop Donald McCoid has set an incredible

precedent of leadership and compassion for our brothers and sisters in faith, and it is with great pride

that I may continue to build upon this strong foundation. It is together that we will continue to identify

the initiatives that are most important to our community, continuing to build bridges and share the word

of God."

The bishop-elect has served as pastor of Emanuel Lu-

theran Church in Pleasantville, NY, since 1997. He

served as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church on Staten

Island, NY, from 1984 to 1997.

The Rev. Egensteiner received a Bachelor of Arts from

Wagner College on Staten Island in 1979, and in 1984, a

Master of Divinity from Lutheran School of Theology at

Chicago, which is one of seven ELCA seminaries.

Bishop-Elect Egensteiner will assume his duties in Au-

gust. A formal rite of installation will take place on No-

vember 16th in New York City at the Cathedral Church

of Saint John the Divine. Bishop-elect Paul and Marianne Egensteiner

First Communion Celebration On May 19th we welcomed Matthew Michael Horacek, Chloe Mackenzie Lahn,

Josefine Maria Matz, Vincent Andreas Spallina, and Katherine Jane Tymecki

to God’s Love Feast. We were joined by many of their friends and family and

shared the Lord’s Supper using bread that our students had baked for the occasion.

We still have some left and it will be used on Pentecost and Trinity Sundays (June

9th & 16th). We thank Kristin Schwartz for once again preparing a group of new

communicants for our congregation.

Charlie Kerns begins his 100th year. On May 29th Pastor Krauser had the pleasure of joining Charles Kerns at the month-

ly birthday party for residents at the Plattdeutsche Home in Franklin Square. He and

Alice Etringer share an apartment there. While many birthdays of residents were

celebrated, Charlie’s was special indeed. It was his 99th birthday that day. The fes-

tivities included cake (Birthday Cake and German Butterkuchen) a glass of wine,

coffee, and tea followed by a time of group song (in English and German!) Follow-

ing the party, they returned to the apartment to share in Holy Communion.

He’s looking forward to celebrating next year his 100th, but because our birthdays

mark the end of a full year of life, he is now in his 100th year! It goes without saying

that he is Grace’s most senior member. The picture at left was taken at Grace’s 100th Anniversary Dinner

Videos on Facebook If you cannot make it to church and you are a Facebook user, you can read and/or watch a video of the

Gospel & Sermon on Grace’s Facebook page: Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor posts the text

of the sermon early on Sunday morning, the video appears Sunday afternoon or evening, depending on

his schedule.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Do you have an abundance of flowers in your garden for cutting? Would you

consider making a bouquet for our altar one Sunday this summer? Flowers

may be brought just before church or on Friday during normal office hours

from 9am to 1pm. If you need a vase, please ask Kathy Pellechia in the

office.

Betty Schwab has some garden beds that are going unused in her yard. If you would like some addi-

tional space to grow some vegetables or flowers just ask!

Yard Sale ● May 19 Once again I would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in another successful Grace

Church yard sale. Just short of $1750 was raised! It was a beautiful day and all went well. Thank you to

everyone who donated items, sorted, priced, set up and cleaned up afterwards. Thank you to Carl Erick-

son and Scott Greifenberger for supplying food and beverages. If I have forgotten anyone, I apologize;

we were quite busy all day.

What’s Cookin’

Irish Cream Cheesecake

INGREDIENTS

1 package Stella D’oro Almond toasts

¼ c. sugar*

½ c. melted butter or margarine

1 lb. (4%) cottage cheese (or more)

4 large eggs

1 lb. cream cheese (room temp)

¾ c. sugar*

1½ oz. Irish cream liquor

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 Tbsp. flour

Pinch salt

1 pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 c. heavy cream

Sliced almonds, lightly toasted (optional) * I use sugar substitutes such as Stevia

PREPARATION

• Pulverize almond toasts in food processor. Mix with quarter cup of sugar and melted butter. Press

into bottom and a bit up the sides of a spring form pan (8” or 9”). Pre-bake at 350°F for 5-8 min.,

then set aside.

• In food processor, process cream cheese until curds are broken up.

• Add eggs, one at a time until well-incorporated.

• Add sugar and blend. (I usually hold back some sugar and then add the rest to taste after cream

cheese and other flavorings are added.)

• Cut cream cheese into cubes and add a few at time blending until mixture is smooth.

• Add 1 oz. Irish cream liquor, vanilla, salt and flour.

• Mixture should be fairly thick. If not, add a little more flour or another 4 oz. of cream cheese.

Last, add ¾ to 1 cup of chocolate chips and pulse a few times.

• If it seems too thick, add a little more cottage or sour cream (if on hand).

• Pour into prepared crust and bake at 350°F. Check at 45 min., should be lightly brown around edges

and completely set (touch center), if using a smaller pan, or if added extra cheese, it might take an

hour.

• When done, remove from oven and immediately loosen crust from edge of pan using a sharp knife.

Let cool on a rack.

• When cake is cool, melt 1 cup of chocolate chips in a bowl over simmering water, stir constantly

taking care not to splash any water into chocolate. When chocolate is fully melted and smooth,

remove from heat and slowly stir 1 cup of heavy cream and ½ oz. of Irish cream liquor.

• Remove ring from pan and spread chocolate over top of cheesecake (let run down sides or with a

knife spread over the sides). Garnish with some sliced almonds if (desired). Chill and serve.
