Not unlike a pregnancy, being born again has its inconvenience, its morning - and perhaps evening sickness, the stares of others, the hopes and fears and the joyful/troubled feelings of a necessary delivery. How might you, by God’s Grace, be being born again this Advent and Christmas? Might it be the heart of a pastoral candidate being moved to accept a call? Could it by chance be a song of the heart, like Marys Magnificat, or Zechariahs Benedictus, or the Angels’ Gloria, or Simeons Nunc Dimittus springing up in your heart? Could it be the birth of a new mission effort to the community by Good Shepherd? Perhaps you are opening your heart to a new call for justice among the poor, the sick, or the immigrant? Perhaps you are being born again by giving up a prejudice, or a bad habit, or a grudge against someone. It is sure that however you labor, no matter how long the gestation, or whatever the change, your new birth involves God’s Spirit working in you. He will deliver as promised, in his Son our Savior, Jesus, and you will be born again to the living hope which is ours through him. Peace,

The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd

Olney, Maryland December 2017

I was at the beach for vaca Nancy said, to her “babe” she was giving birth,

Fishing, clamming, friending and face booking So, inspiration, articulation, orchestration I must find,

Trust me, for the Newsletter, not looking For your hearts and minds to stir and store,

When on my computer there arose such a clatter So, you this Advent I don’t bore

But move you to your very core.

“Expectation and Expecting!”

Are you expecting? Are you in labor? Sure, you are. You are perhaps giving birth to some kind of financial scheme.

Maybe you are expecting a child and haven’t broken the news yet. I’m anticipating a couple of new fishing trips this

year and building a plan. Andrew is birthing a sermon for December 24 at 10 a.m. I know two couples who are initiating

plans for marriage in the Spring. The ladies of the church are getting together a plan for decorating the church for

Christmas. We are literally always expecting, anticipating, preparing, and laboring over something new.

The world finds itself in labor too. Sometimes that labor is prolonged and painful. The birth of a new health plan is

still laboring because we can’t get it done. We wonder if delivery will happen and what kind of child it will be. The

new Tax Plan isn’t in the delivery room yet. We are all laboring more than we would like over sexual misconduct,

world hunger, and gun violence.

In the midst of all this, many in the world anticipate, expect and prepare for the celebration of the birth of God’s Son,

Jesus. Even as the 500th Anniversary of Luther’s revelation, “by grace you are saved through faith” reverberates among

us, we are being born anew. I hope that your awareness this Advent includes more than the simple veneer of trees,

balls, bells, bags, bangles and bills. There is frankly too much of that.

A new thought! Like Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, and others in the Advent-Christmas love drama, it, this thought, might

perplex, trouble, even make you afraid. It’s a Nicodemus thing, and it can be found in I Peter and I John; it’s “to be

born again.” It’s about me, you, and everyone else who is called “child of God.” It means that we are constantly by

God’s Spirit dying and rising, turning around and heading home, and growing up into the child of God he has called

us to be.

Not unlike a pregnancy, being born again has its inconvenience, its morning - and perhaps evening sickness, the stares

of others, the hopes and fears and the joyful/troubled feelings of a necessary delivery.

How might you, by God’s Grace, be being born again this Advent and Christmas? Might it be the heart of a

pastoral candidate being moved to accept a call? Could it by chance be a song of the heart, like Mary’s Magnificat, or

Zechariah’s Benedictus, or the Angels’ Gloria, or Simeon’s Nunc Dimittus springing up in your heart? Could it be the

birth of a new mission effort to the community by Good Shepherd? Perhaps you are opening your heart to a new call

for justice among the poor, the sick, or the immigrant? Perhaps you are being born again by giving up a prejudice, or

a bad habit, or a grudge against someone.

It is sure that however you labor, no matter how long the gestation, or whatever the change, your new birth involves

God’s Spirit working in you.

He will deliver as promised, in his Son our Savior, Jesus, and you will be born again to the living hope which is ours

through him.

Peace,

Dear Members of LCGS, The Holiday Season is upon us! It is amazing how three months can fly by so fast. We have settled into our routine and the children have become comfortable in our classrooms and have made many new friends. Thanksgiving has come and gone and now we are patiently awaiting Christmas time. Our preschoolers are enjoying the theme, “We Prepare for Jesus” and busy with Christmas themed activities. This month we will be working on letters J and K. The practicing has begun for our annual Christmas Program. The show is set for December 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. We look forward to seeing everyone. A big thank you to Ms. Sandy from “Little Hands” for helping us with all the wonderful songs. May your Christmas be merry, may it fill your hearts with cheer, and may all of you be happy throughout the coming year!

Latest News Call Committee News – 11/19/2017

As we’ve celebrated Thanksgiving and near the Advent season, we would like to update you with encouraging news following the receipt of the new list of pastoral candidates from the Southeastern District (SED) on September 11, 2017.

1. Pr. Ken Carlson (Circuit Visitor) has completed his outreach to the candidates and received confirmation from four of the eight on the list that they are open to a call at this time.

2. The Call Committee met on September 27th, October 8th, and November 5th. We reviewed the Personal Information File (PIF) and Self Evaluation Tool (SET) for each candidate and agreed to extend an invitation to all four to participate in a phone interview at their earliest convenience. E-mails were sent this past week to each candidate with links to our Congregational Profile (CP) for their review and notice that we will be calling them shortly to schedule an interview. Note: As of 11/19/17 we have received three responses. Two pastors accepted our invitation for an interview and one declined due to having accepted a call at another church.

3. As a reminder from our first round of interviews in early 2017 the SED stipulates that the names of the candidates remain in strict confidence, only to be shared among the Call Committee (CC), Sister Robie, and Pastor Dave. We will honor this request and understand its reasoning and importance. The consequences of a congregation discovering that their Pastor may be considering a call could be dire. The CC appreciates your understanding and patience. We will continue to send out announcements concerning our progress and as new information becomes available.

4. At the conclusion of each interview the CC will deliberate and decide whether to extend an invitation to the candidate for an onsite visit. We will immediately begin work on compiling summaries of each interview to be distributed to the congregation as soon as they are completed. PIF and SET document sets will then be made available in the church office. Note: They are not to be removed from the church office at any time as the forms contain private and confidential information.

For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:24-28

“The Bean Trees”

Written by

Barbara Kingsolver No young person ever escaped rural Kentucky until Taylor Greer did, or so she thought. Taylor got in her '55 Volkswagen bug and drove until she ran out of gas which happened to be in the middle of the Cherokee Nation. While she was sipping coffee, a baby was put in the front seat of her car and the adventure begins. She names the baby "Turtle" because she clings to everything like a mud turtle. Eventually the pair makes it to Tucson, Arizona where Taylor meets Lou Ann, another Kentuckian and finds a job at the "Jesus is Lord Used Tires" shop. To find out what happens to this amazing family, join us in the Family Life wing and bring along a little of your favorite Southwestern food to munch and crunch with our fellow bookers.

.

Will meet the second Wednesday each month in Room 104. December 13 at 12 noon is when we meet again. Join other seniors for this event and enjoy time together.
