Dear Cathedral Family,

After a busy program year of

Adam King, continues to do fine

work in transitioning our musical

program. He has brought a joyful

liveliness to our worship, and the

choir and staff have appreciated his

positive spirit, collegiality, and hard

work.

We will be clearing, cleaning,

and moving some of our interior

spaces during the month of July, as

we prepare to relocate our nursery

For now, please keep our children’s

prepare to embark on a new program

year of growth.

I pray that these midsummer

weeks will be a time of renewal and

rejuvenation for every member of the

and refreshed for the good work that

God has in store for us here together

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e D e a c o n

Hello, Mobile!

I am so thankful,

humbled, and honored to

come to Christ Church

Cathedral. As Dean

Gibson mentioned, I am a

native of South Carolina,

but I do have ties to

Lower Alabama. My

mother grew up in Opp

and for most of my

childhood my family

would visit my

grandmother in Opp, several times a

year. So I am familiar with 80 degrees at

Christmas and even hotter in July. My

biggest memories of Mobile were the

USS Alabama and the tunnels under the

bay. I look forward to learning a lot

more about the Christ Church Cathedral

community and the greater Mobile area.

My parents were married in the

Episcopal Church at St. Luke’s,

Marianna, Florida. My brother and I are

both “cradle” Episcopalians. I was

baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s

Episcopal, Newberry, was a member of

Grace Episcopal, Charleston, and was a

member of Christ Church, Greenville. It

was at Christ Church where I became

very active, serving in a

variety of capacities and

enjoying the vast Christian

education opportunities.

This church became my

sponsoring parish for

seminary. On June 7, 2014,

the Rt. Rev. W. Andrew

Waldo (Bishop of Upper

South Carolina) ordained

me to the Transitional

Diaconate. The service was

a beautiful, joyful, and holy

event.

Before attending seminary, I worked

in the public sector for nearly 15 years. I

worked in transportation and land use

planning and grants administration for

the City of Charleston and the SC

Appalachian Council of Governments.

I look forward to working with you

all in our corner of God’s vineyard

starting July 1. Please help me to learn

your names!

(Front row, third from the left) The Reverend Daniel Andrew Wagner with The Right Reverend W. Andrew Waldo,

Bishop of Upper South Carolina after Ordination Service on June 7, 2014.

God’s Peace,

REMINDER

While you are traveling, don’t forget to grab the hotel toiletries and bring them home for Sam Power to give to those in need.

The Delta Bike Project (DBP) is a

non-profit community bicycle shop

dedicated to promoting and

improving access to bicycle

transportation in Mobile, Alabama.

Downtown and Midtown Mobile

has an active population of bicycle

riders and bicycle enthusiasts who

lack sufficient access to bicycle

maintenance and affordable

bicycles. The DBP helps provide

Mobile's community in need with

the means to obtain a bicycle or

bicycle parts through volunteering.

One of the key community

initiatives at The Delta Bike Project

is the Time is Money Program,

which helps provide the means to

obtain a bicycle or bicycle parts

through volunteering time to work

towards earning a bicycle or parts.

To date, they have recycled over 70

bicycles into the community

through this Program!

Participants work with DBP staff to

determine their bicycle needs and

DBP determines the cost of the bike

(usually ~$50 range). They receive

$10 worth of credit towards their

bike goal for every hour they work.

Occasionally, parts are needed and

participants can work towards those

as well. Types of volunteer work

include picking up trash in our

neighborhood, cleaning the shop

and donated bikes, removing parts

from bikes, sorting parts, etc.

Currently, the Delta Bike Project is

open Tuesdays from 6:00 to 9:00

p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5:00

p.m.

Ride your bike down and check

them out at 561 Saint Francis Street!

For more information online, go to

www.deltabikeproject.org to see

how you can participate.

Many thanks to Corinna Luce for

bringing this downtown outreach

project to our attention. According

to Corinna, “Bikes can be in any

condition since unfixable bikes may

be used for parts.” She continued,

“Thank you for helping me support

this wonderful community effort.

They have a fun event coming up in

August. [We will send] more details

later.”

This is our fourth year to support the Mobile Police

Department’s Family Intervention Team efforts to help

families get ready for back to school.

Our goal is to have 100% of our cards taken and filled.

Items will include backpacks, supplies, calculators, and

requests for cash donations. This would mean that 20

children will receive a backpack and school supplies, as

well as receive credit for $100 to use toward school

related items. The FIT officers will go shopping with the

children. The cash goal is $2100 so that we can offset

the cost of lunch on their shopping day. To reach our

goal we need everyone’s help.

The project will run through Sunday, July 27. The

deadline for all collections is Monday, July 28. The

officers will give the children their stuffed backpacks

and take them shopping on Friday, August 1 during the

tax-free days.

Help us keep track of each child by writing your name

and telephone number on the sign-up sheet. It is also

necessary for you to indicate the name of the child and

the number on your card.

O PERATION BACKPACK 2014

Many thanks to our the Fun Club for sponsoring the project again this year. They will meet at 10:30 a.m. on

Tuesday, July 29 to confirm that all the supply needs were met and prepare the donations for distributions.

Donated items may be dropped off at or around the

piano in the Chapter House. Please place your item in a

bag and attach a copy of the child’s card to the bag. If

you are making a monetary contribution, please make

your check payable to Christ Church Cathedral with

FIT Operation Backpack on the memo line.

All gifts and donations are due by Monday, July 28.

For questions, please contact Marla at the Cathedral

office 438-1822.

Summer Read ing

Dean Gibson recommends John Green’s most recent novel, The Fault in Our Stars, for

anyone young or old looking for a good summer read. Her sermon on June 22 made

reference to it.

Link to sermon: http://www.christchurchcathedralmobile.org/Sermons2014.html

It is a bittersweet story of the relationship of two teenagers who meet at a cancer support

group. The title comes from a line in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar where Cassuis says to

Brutus, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are

underlings.”

If there is enough interest in the book, we will arrange a time for discussion. The novel

has been adapted into a movie that was released in early June.

Thomas Cahill to speak at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church.

Dauphin Way United Methodist Church has recently established the Stephen and Ruth

Dill Lecture Fund. The inaugural speaker for the series will be Thomas Cahill, a noted

author and historian. Mr. Cahill will speak on Sunday, September 28 at the Dauphin Way

10:30 a.m. service and give a lecture that afternoon at 5:30 p.m. His talks will focus on

his latest book, Heretics and Heroes.

We highly recommend adding this book to your summer reading list, and marking your

calendar for the evening lecture. For more information on Thomas Cahill, please go to:

www.randomhouse.com/features/cahill/site/bio.

The Mobile Kappa League held

their National College Signing Day

on Sunday, May 4, 2014. With a

packed house of onlookers and

supporters, each Kappa Leaguer

revealed the institution of higher

great anticipation. The Class of 2014

million dollars in scholarship offers.

These young men have worked

extremely hard this year to make

sure the Mobile Kappa League

tradition of being “A Kut Above” is

maintained through their efforts of

academic excellence and community

service. Advisor, Carl Cunningham

the Mobile Kappa Leaguers have

amassed a little over $20 million
