GOOD JOB, KIND PEOPLE!
I got this wonderful note from a visitor
recently. It made me feel so good,
like… WOW, EMMANUEL! YOU WERE
ON THE BALL!!
The visitor wrote:
Hi Nansi, I enjoyed the service Sunday.
Your sermon story was powerful and
the woman who read the scriptures did
so in a very expressive and meaningful
manner. People at your church are
quite welcoming. I don't think I've
visited a church where so many
people came and introduced
themselves to me and then actually
stayed and interacted with me for a
few minutes. Quite amazing.
FYI, The woman who read the
scriptures was our very own Sarah
Erickson-Bhatt. Good job, Sarah!
And good job to the kind and
hospitable people who took the time
to reach out to someone you didn’t
know, and make them feel at home. It
is our hospitality and kindness which
shall mark us; as the old camp song
goes, “and they’ll know we are
Christians by our love.”
Good job, friends! And keep it up!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Hawkins

Emmanuel has been generous in giving monetary support
to the United Church of Christ’s five wider missions. The
first offering, One Great Hour of Sharing, was collected in
March. June 9, Pentecost Sunday, which is the birth of
the church, the second collection will be taken. With
these funds we will be investing in the vision of our greater
body. This special offering is called Strengthen the
Church.
Strengthen the Church supports the expansion of ministry
and growth of UCC local congregations. Your
contribution will help the UCC fulfill its commitment to
creating a just world for all. 50 percent of your offering
stays in our local Conference, and 50 percent is sent to
the national work of strengthening the church universal.
Grants are given towards new church starts, inspiring
youth and young adults into leadership, and equipping
pastors for ministry in the 21st century.
In 2018, your support increased church vitality by
awarding 12 grants totaling $350,000 through the New
and Renewing Spiritual Communities program.
As God calls our congregations to be the church in new
ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken
new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual
life in our youth and young adults.
Please use the envelope provided in the fellowship pads
to make a contribution to Strengthen the Church, June 9.
Thank you. Board of Stewards

RED Geraniums!
June 9th is Pentecost
Sunday as well as
Confirmation &
Graduate Sunday!
Our custom is to decorate the Sanctuary with RED
geraniums for Pentecost, red being one of the colors of
FIRE, which is a symbol of Pentecost.
Please bring in donations of nice RED geraniums for June
9th. Unless you wish to take them back home with you, the
plants will be used for our outdoor planters this
summer....thank you!

Singing Bowl for the SUMMER... Our loose change offerings in June, July and
August will benefit the Blessings in a Backpack
project in preparation for the 2019/20 school
season.
The Waukesha County Blessings chapter was
founded in 2012 to bring this mission to life in
our own back yard. They are a local chapter of a national
organization — which serves over 83,000 students in 900
schools, spread throughout 46 states and the District of
Colombia.
The weekend “gap” is a time when many children go
hungry in our communities. They started bridging the gap
by serving 25 students at Hadfield elementary school in
Waukesha, and now serve over 1,200 students at five
elementary schools.
They help bridge the gap for these children every week
during the school year by filling their backpacks with food
for the weekend. Their local chapter is fully responsible for
securing funds to support their local mission and they
need our help. It’s a heart breaking fact that 4,600
children in Waukesha are hungry over the weekend.
Singing Bowl Thank Yous From Church World Service....Thank you for your
generosity! (The loose change donations in January and
February went to provide training toward women’s
literacy and the establishment of women’s businesses in
Serbia... $188.22 was collected).
From Water for South Sudan...The money that you have
graciously donated to this water project will make an
enormous difference to the people of South Sudan. (The
loose change donations in March went to aid the effort
to provide wells in South Sudan...$101.77 was collected).
MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
FAMILY NEWS: Heather is working full-time. Derek is looking
for employment. Heather and Derek signed a lease and
moved into their apartment in early May. Tanya started a
new job at a daycare facility in Hartland on May 6.
DAY CENTER NEWS: Our new case manager, Christina
Perkins, started on Monday, May 6. Christina is a certified
Wisconsin social worker who earned her Bachelor's Degree
in Social Work from Indiana State University. She comes to us
with a wealth of case management/social work
experience, including 12 years working with abused and
neglected children and 7 years working with the elderly and
developmentally disabled. She is looking for an opportunity
to utilize her extensive case management experience in a
more independent setting where she can focus on quality
over quantity. We're very glad to have her on board!
Katie Eigner is returning to Family Promise as one of our
Weekend Day Center Managers. Katie has worked in this
role for us in the past and has always done a great job.
She will be working every other weekend. We're glad to
have her back!
JOB OPPORTUNITY: Family Promise is looking for others
who might be interested in serving as part-time Weekend
Day Center Managers. This is a great opportunity for
persons wanting to earn some extra money while making
sure our day center is properly managed during
weekends and holidays. The primary role in this position is
simply being present at the day center to provide basic
assistance to our guests, greet the occasional visitor
dropping off donated items and oversee the facility. Pay
is $11/hour. Call David Tennyck, Executive Director, 414-
587-2476 for further information.
SAVE THE DATES:
July 13, Saturday, - A Fun Golf Outing to benefit Family
Promise
July 21 – 28, Family Promise host week at Emmanuel UCC
The kiosk in the church foyer has drawers labeled for
different things we collect on an ongoing basis. It’s a
great way to get rid of unneeded items and help out at
the same time:
Grocery receipts from Albrecht’s Sentry store in
Delafield. We receive a rebate of the total receipts
we submit. Those rebates help our bottom line!
Empty printer ink cartridges are turned in at Office
Max to earn credit for Emmanuel purchases.
First Aid items/new toothbrushes/OTC pain meds
(unopened) are given to the Free Clinic in
Oconomowoc.
Used cellphones and chargers are sold on eBay with
proceeds benefiting our bottom line.
Used eye glasses are given to the Dousman Lions
Club: throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other
volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them
to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs).
LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength
and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are
distributed to people in need in low and middle
income communities where they will have the
greatest impact.
Donate Blood at Emmanuel on
Monday, July 15th, 1:30-5:30 PM
In as little as one hour, you
can become someone’s
unnamed, unknown, but
all-important hero. Saving
a life is noble work that
starts very simply and
easily with blood
donation.
Countless fellow church
family members have benefited from the generosity of
others who regularly share their valuable resource of
blood through donation. Won’t you consider joining the
ranks....it’s the easiest way possible to be a super hero.
As Emmanuel strives to become a church known for its
mission outreach and care for the community, what a
perfect way to walk the walk! Please mark your calendar
for July 15th. Information on how to make an appointment
will be shared as the time grows closer, but it’s not too
early to make the decision....thousands are counting on
you. If you do not want a long wait, make an
appointment....they are given first preference.
After coffee hour on Sunday, July 14, we will ask for
volunteers to ready fellowship hall for the blood drive.

Interested in Nature: Here Comes Summer
It was windy, cold and rainy on Wednesday, May 8.
THERE WAS NO ONE AT THE DOUSMAN FARMER’S MARKET.
The soil has been too wet for some of our farm friends to
get their equipment safely out on their fields. None of the
Redbud trees near us are in bloom yet. Our Forsythia may
not bloom at all this year but go straight to green leaf.
What an odd spring…..
Nevertheless, we celebrated Mother’s Day with a
remarkable film about the power of one mother, the
strength of a child’s mind, the discipline of a game called
chess. If you’ve not seen the Queen of Katwe, we highly
recommend it. Also in May, we scheduled the prominent
conservationist, “Prairie Bob” Ahrenhoerster of North Lake
to come and talk to us on Insect Folklore of the Prairie.
Have you ever heard of Thatching Ants? What do you
know about Solitary Bees?
You might ask “Why is A New Common Ground so
interested in nature and seasons?” Here are a few
reasons from great minds through the ages:
“The initial step for a soul to come to knowledge of God is
contemplation of nature” Irenaeus (120-202)
“I want creation to penetrate you with so much
admiration that wherever you go, the least plant may
bring you the clear remembrance of the Creator.” Basil
the Great (329=379)
“The whole earth is a living icon of the face of God.”
John of Damascus (575-749)
Black Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar, in Wisconsin by
Linda Weichelt and it’s winged self…..
“If I spend enough time with the tiniest creature—even a
caterpillar—I would never have to prepare a sermon. So
full of God is every creature.” Meister Eckhart (1260-1327)
“God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on
trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” Martin
Luther (1483-1546)
“God owns and loves every creature; therefore those who
love God will show justice and goodness toward all that
lives and breathes.” Sallie McFague (1933-----

I imagine God to be like my father.
My father was always the voice of certainty in my life.
Certainty in the wisdom, certainty in the path,
certainty always in God.
For me God is certainty in everything.
Certainty that everything is good and everything is God.

Pentecost, also called Whitsunday, (Pentecost from Greek pentecostē, “50th day”), is a
major festival in the Christian church, celebrated on the Sunday that falls on the 50th day
of Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and
other disciples following the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ (Acts of
the Apostles, chapter 2), and it marks the beginning of the Christian church’s mission to the
world.
The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) was primarily a thanksgiving for the firstfruits of the
wheat harvest, but it was later associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God
to Moses on Mount Sinai. The church’s transformation of the Jewish feast to a Christian
festival was thus related to the belief that the gift of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus
was the firstfruits of a new dispensation that fulfilled and succeeded the old dispensation of
the Law.
When the festival was first celebrated in the Christian church is not known, but it was
mentioned in a work from the Eastern church, the Epistola Apostolorum, in the 2nd century.
In the 3rd century it was mentioned by Origen, theologian and head of the catechetical
school in Alexandria, and by Tertullian, Christian priest and writer of Carthage.
In the early church, Christians often referred to the entire 50-day period beginning with Easter
as Pentecost. Baptism was administered both at the beginning (Easter) and end (the day of
Pentecost) of the Paschal season. Eventually, Pentecost became a more popular time for
baptism than Easter in northern Europe, and in England the feast was commonly called
White Sunday (Whitsunday) for the special white garments worn by the newly baptized.
In The First Prayer Book of Edward VI (1549), the feast was officially called Whitsunday, and
this name has continued in Anglican churches. In Catholic and other Western churches,
priests often wear red vestments during Pentecost to symbolize the “tongues of fire” that
descended on the disciples from the Holy Spirit; members of the congregation also wear red
in some traditions, and the altar is commonly dressed in a red frontal cloth.
