Food and Friends: A Free Community Meal

Thursday, December 7th at 5:15 PM

We want to extend hospitality to all and to serve others. We do both of these during our Thursday Evening Food & Friends. We invite the people of our neighborhood and those needing special support to come and have dinner with us. Our members cook and serve this meal. There is a short devotional time before the meal.

We have been blessed with several new cooks for Food and Friends allowing us to continue this ministry to the community - during November and December, there will be only one held those months due to the holidays. Thank you to everyone that has signed up and thank you to the many volunteers who continue to assist with preparation, desserts, serving and cleanup. Please feel free to contact Carole Hunt, Food & Friends Coordinator to sign up ([email protected]). To donate a dessert item, you may contact Sheryl Melville ([email protected])

Decorating For The Holidays Decorating For The Holidays Saturday, December 2 at 9:00 AM At Christ United Methodist Church, we're hanging the greens and preparing for the Birth of Jesus the Christ. Come bring your energy, gloves and wire (should you choose to decorate outside), ideas, and a smile. All are encouraged to appear at 9:00 AM Saturday morning to prepare the church for a grand celebration. See you there!!

Merry Christmas from the Worship Committee

Catch the Christmas Spirit! Saturday, December 9th

at 3:00 PM A Fun Family Event Enjoy Refreshments After

Come and make meaningful Christmas memories TOGETHER!

During this engaging, approximately one-hour, interactive event, families will hear a dramatic retelling of the Christmas story --- hear from Mary, Joseph, and an angel how the amazing events unfolded on that first Christmas. Each family will create their own Keepsake nativity scene to cherish for years to come.

This is an event for families and their children … invite another family who would enjoy coming.

Contact Teresa Hind for more information or to register for this event. Watch a promo video in Frank Hall on Sunday morning. Registration forms are in Frank Hall. Please register by November 29, 2017

As we come toward the close of the year and reflect on God’s gracious leading at Christ United Methodist

Church, we do so with an eye to the future.

It has been a good year for Christ Church. We have received many into membership. We have maintained a vigorous

outreach into the community with many, varied ministries. And we have had a year of modest growth in newcomers and

in our continuing Christian growth.

Christ Church is a strong congregation in worship, outreach, mission and service. Many of our members have been

involved in Volunteers in Mission trips to a variety of places in the U.S. We certainly have a continuing impact on the

community through our hosting of the Lunch Place. Our ministries of Susannah’s Pantry put food on about 40 tables each

month—most of these families have small children at home. Our Good Samaritan Fund continues to help neighbors in a

variety of short-term needs. Our wonderful Food and Friends ministry continues to bring neighbors together and gives

many volunteers opportunities to be the hands of Jesus to others.

Financially, the members and friends of our congregation are a generous people. Though attendance is slightly decreased,

your giving has increased and we are grateful to say that with your faithful stewardship we are able to meet our Annual

Conference Shares in Ministry, pay our bills and add to our investments. Moreover, we are able to do more missionally in

local projects and in Annual Conference sponsored projects.

For example, we were able to send over $11,600 to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, following the devastating

hurricanes earlier this year. We contributed $1,000 in honor of Bishop Joseph Yeakel to the Student Aid Fund and we

have supported the local New Hope Shelter and Waynesboro Area Human and Community Services ministries. And, we

can be especially proud of our Recycle Disciples, who have contributed a good deal of funds through their volunteer

recycling efforts. Our Finance Committee has been watchful and wise with investments and is ever desirous of using our

investments to further ministry and mission here.

We have transitioned to new leadership in several areas as some have stepped down after years of faithful service and

others were called home to join the Church Triumphant after faithful Christian living. Our music program has blessed the

Church and we benefit each week from the art and music led by Dr. Fred Davision, Cindy Gettins, Brenda Slick and the

members of the Sanctuary Choir and Bell Choir. Our worship services are so rich and blessed. We have a wonderful staff

all around with Pastor David Deatrich, Beverly Robinson, Carl Henry, Maria Meyers, Tosha Hind and Teresa Hind. Our

Noah’s Ark Daycare ministry also transitioned to new leadership and they are a jewel of our ministries as they have been

for 27 years.

All is going well. But, there are two areas we must address without fail. The first is that we are aging. (Me included!)

And while we regularly attract visitors and many do transition to active membership, we are an older congregation.

Secondly, we are not attracting younger people. We are in the midst of a vast cultural transition. This has been coming

for a long time and is upon us now. But it is not an excuse to be passive.

To be faithful to Christ, we are called to make disciples and not just Church members. Over the next year our focus on

learning how to become better at disciple-making is a must. We have no other message but Christ, crucified and risen.

His Spirit is with us and through us, wills to reach those who do not know the love of God or the life-changing Gospel.

Second, we must focus on how to reach those of our young adults who no longer are regularly attending worship. They

are the generation who will receive the church from our hands.

Clearly, their lives are busier than we appreciate, and with challenges many of us never faced. And, they have different

tastes. Many tell me that they love the Lord and want a stronger spiritual life and a church for their families. But they are

looking for a worship service that speaks to their generation.

I ask you to prayerfully consider planting a new church within this existing church. I will have more to say about that in

the coming year. As they marry and have families of their own, we want to both support them and also give them the tools

they need to grow in faith and to reach their generation. If we fail to do this, then despite the many wonderful ministries,

worship and fellowship we share, there will be no future beyond our lifetimes.

The State of The Church at present is good—it is hopeful—it is blessed! But we have challenges before us that are critical

and pressing. Jesus walks among us and as we trust his leading, I believe our future is bright.

-In His service, Pastor Robert Cook

Men's Bible Study “Not a Silent Night" is a five session series that does not seem to fit with our view of Advent and Christmas, but in this series Pastor Adam Hamilton makes that connection. The series begins at the end of Jesus' earthly life with Mary at the Crucifixion and Resurrection. You are then taken back in time to witness Jesus' life and ends with our Lord born in a stable. The series begins 22 December to coincide with the Christmas season. Leading up to that date, our current "Revealing the Mysteries of Heaven" study continues. It will resume on 26 January, once the "Not a Silent Night" series has been completed. Herb Meininger @ 717-352-6130 or [email protected]

Pilates Pilates is a system of light work-outs to improve balance, strength and muscle tone — particularly your core

muscles. The group is led by Kelly Soliday, a certified Pilates instructor. We are especially interested in getting middle-aged and senior men to take this class, as the benefits are exceptional. However, we encourage anyone who is interested to attend.

Pilates class usually meets on Mondays at 4:00 PM in the Wilson room. Cost is $10 per

session. Mats are supplied and this is a great way to work out! You are welcome to join us.

Christmas At Noah’s Ark On Tuesday, December 19h at 7:00 PM the children from Noah’s Ark will present a celebration of Christmas in word and song for family, friends and any and all who want their spirits lifted. We have been singing Christmas songs for several weeks now and the excitement is beginning to build. The rehearsals are manageable on occasion, but sometimes they are sheer pandemonium. We reach the point where we aren’t sure if it will come off as planned or not. Usually it’s not, but the results are every bit as entertaining as the planned. The program lasts forty-five minutes to an hour and refreshments are served afterwards. If you can find the time in your busy schedule, please come and join us. COOKIES NEEDED FOR NOAH’S ARK’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Following the program on Tuesday, December 19th, we always have cookies, pretzels and punch. We will be baking cookies at Noah’s Ark, but it’s hard to put a dent into 36 dozen. We would really appreciate your help. They don’t need to be fancy, although I always enjoy those. Mostly it will be children eating the cookies and their tastes are pretty simple. Please call the office at Noah’s Ark (717-765-8146) and let us know how many dozen you can spare. You can bring the cookies to the church Parlor any time from Sun, Dec 17 to Tues., Dec 19. Thank you so much.

CRAFTERS - Meet down in the Frehn Class room from 10:00AM-5:00PM

Hearthstone and making cards, also. Everyone is welcome to come lend a hand.

(Call Patti – 717-655-5559) Knitters and those who crochet are welcome to participate.

Susannah’s Pantry People come to Christ Church seeking immediate food help each week. You can help by donating canned and dry foods that can easily be stored and kept in Susannah’s Pantry. It is amazing to see how God touches people to fill the pantry and amazing to see how many this little cupboard helps!

Some non-perishable (no refrigeration required) items that we could use are: Spaghetti Sauce, Canned Meats (ham, tuna, chicken),

and Canned Fruits/Applesauce.

Occasionally, we have requests for personal care items (toilet paper, shampoo, soap, razors, etc) – donations of personal care items are appreciated.

Thank you for all your donations to Susannah’s Pantry! With your help, dozens of people have received much needed food. Thank you for helping to feed others in the love of Christ!

Christ Church has recycling programs to help the environment.

Metal Recycling: We can take and recycle anything made of metal or with metal in it, with the exception of TV’s, computer monitors (computers are ok), tires and stuffed furniture. Any appliance large or small, anything run electrically or with batteries is okay.

Aluminum Cans Pull-Tabs: A pull-tabs recycle tub is in the narthex to Frank Hall next to all the other recycle tubs. When we collect enough tabs, we will take them to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.

Batteries: A battery recycle tub is by the narthex to Frank Hall – household batteries of all kinds – even hearing aid batteries can be deposited there. They will then be taken for recycling.

Empty Ink-jet Cartridges: Most Inkjet Cartridges can be recycled and re-manufactured. Please place the cartridge in its original box or in a plastic bag to keep it safe from spills and damages. Place your empty cartridges in the jar in the Second Street Entrance.

We want and need your help. Don’t throw those old batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, or metal items in the trash. Bring them to the church so they can be kept out of landfills and recycled.

We All Are One In Mission The Missions Committee is up and running with our goals for this year:

Mission Education – to help the congregation become better informed and more knowledgeable about their support to the mission outreach of CUMC.

Mission Experience – that address the needs we identify in Waynesboro, in Pennsylvania, in the United States and around the world.

Mission Support – that help fund local mission outreach and the global mission work of the United Methodist Church.

Please stay tuned as we continue in our attempts to keep you updated and fully informed. WWII German martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The church is the church only when it exists for others.” Every church is a part of God’s mission. The lyrics to We All Are One in Mission” include the lines, “Our varied gifts united by Christ… To plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love.” CUMC has an incredible heart for missions and the committee is honored to be serving in such a committed church. Thank you for your support of God’s plan at CUMC.

Thank you all for your response to the Hurricane Relief plea that went out. Missions Committee donated $5,000 to UMCOR for Hurricane Relief and asked the congregation to match that donation. You went above and beyond! At last count, the congregation’s donations had totaled $6,615.57!! Thank you for your very generous response to areas that so desperately need your help.

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, January 27, 2018. CUMC will be hosting a one-day Missions Training. Anyone considering a missions trip next year should prayerfully consider attending. There will be more details given closer to the date.

MISSION CENTRAL: Starting in January, we will be setting up one routine afternoon a month to work at Mission Central. We have fantastic fun and fellowship as we assist in the many projects under the Mission Central umbrella. Five of us traveled to Mission Central (Mechanicsburg) in September and were part of the group that verified 1208 health kits while we were there. (Verifying the kits means you "unpack" each kit, verify that it has exactly what it is supposed to have in it, remove tags and any references to where the contents were made, and then "pack" them back up again.) We will be telling you more about those projects and their efforts to meet people's needs in future newsletters.

THERE WILL BE A MISSIONS AUCTION IN 2018. The Missions Committee is planning the 2018 Missions Auction for March. Please start thinking about what you might contribute to the auction in time, talent or donations. Stay tuned for more details.

Next Missions Committee Meeting: Tuesday, December 12, 2018 at 6:30 PM in the Frehn Classroom. We will catch up on several areas of Missions and begin planning for the Mission Auction.

Our Bad Weather / Snow Emergency Policy:

Every church ought to have a stated snow emergency policy and here is Christ UMC's: Christ UMC is always open for worship on Sunday regardless of snow/weather (unless there is a Blizzard).

You need not consult the TV or radio; we will be open. However, if the Borough of Waynesboro (Washington Township) issues a road advisory requesting that drivers stay off the roads or if the State closes the roads we will comply and cancel services. Having said that, use common sense. If you do not feel safe going out in snowy and icy weather, stay home -- be safe!

Noah’s Ark Christian Child Care A Ministry of Christ United Methodist Church

November started with a number of up and downs for the families and the staff at Noah’s Ark. A large number of families and staff dealt with the annual stomach bug and colds that affected their families’ routines, some more than once, as their loving family members passed the virus around. A large number of the staff has also been coping with family deaths, medical concerns, accidents that kept them from their daily work day at the Ark and accidents that affected their loved ones. We continue to do our best to manage as Miss Anne’s son recovers from a local car accident. Life is difficult, so please keep all these families in your prayers.

I’ve learned that each fall Noah’s Ark staff bring the fall season into the Ark for a little sensory discovery for the toddlers. Like most of my days as the director, I was sitting in the office focused on my paperwork, when I started hearing loud squeals of enjoyment. As it was followed by the staff’s elated laughter, I couldn’t help but to leave my work and investigate. As I approached the front hallway, all I could see was a cloud of colorful leaves floating through the air. The staff was sitting in the middle of the floors surrounded by their young infants and toddlers and throwing the leaves into the air. Some may say why would they do this, but the staff go the extra mile to give the children of the Ark a fun learning experience. Today the staff deserve an A+, and especially for cleaning up all of the fun.

Each fall we will also do assessments of all the children in our care. From the results, we can plan our lessons to address the specific needs of the children in each class. Can they say their full names or do they know how to write their name? Do they need more practice naming their colors or drawing their shapes? Can they follow directions and sit in circle time with their friends? Do they need more practice cutting with scissors or tying their shoes? Do they show respect for one another, use their manners, exhibit acts of kindness? These fall assessments give the staff a starting point for their planning. In March, we will repeat the assessments and evaluate how far the children have progressed and how well we have done our job in helping each child develop and grow. Noah’s Arks staff works diligently to evaluate each child individually. The preschool staff has 20 preschoolers per classroom and there are a total of 22 toddlers that will be evaluated. Our preschool teachers can complete the entire evaluation with one child in one day, but it sometimes takes three or four days to complete the evaluation with just one toddler. These evaluations ensure that Noah’s Ark is meeting the needs of our children.

We finished our fall fundraiser and our second Scholastic book order, both of which did very well. The profits from these fundraisers are used to purchase, classroom books, new toys and equipment for the children. Looking ahead to December, we expect a very busy month again. We invite you to join us on Thursday, November 30th at 6 pm for some Paint Night Fun with Noah’s Ark’s parents, friends and staff. You are more than welcome to join us in getting into the Christmas spirit by painting Santa. Save the date of Tuesday, December 19th at 7pm for our annual Christmas program. The children will be working hard to create their festive presentations with the staff’s guidance.

We continue to save the Box Tops for Education labels to obtain educational materials. We would appreciate your support in collecting these labels, which are found on a large variety of household items. In today’s age, there’s even an app for your phone that makes your support quite easy. Login to Box Tops for Education and enter our school’s name or you may drop them in the collection container in Frank Hall.

Thank you for supporting His Children! Amy
