All are welcome!
Diapers are collected year round, as McMannen is a “Hot
Spot” diaper drop off location. All sizes are gladly accepted.
Pull Ups and Swimmy diapers are also in high demand.
Please consider picking up a bag or box of diapers when you go
to the store and leaving them at the church outside of Jackie's
office. One in three families face the daily crisis of diaper need.
Together we can provide comfort and peace of mind —
one diaper at a time.
Our next Paint and Praise event is
Saturday, August 13 from 6:30-8:00PM at McMannen
UMC in the Fellowship Hall. If you have a child ages 1—12
who would like a spot, please let us know! Please RSVP to
Jackie by Wednesday, August 10 via email at
We will paint, create, sing
and praise God!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

SPACES ARE LIMITED! Through our culturally diverse half day ministry to children ages one to five, we serve as a place of child care excellence for the community. The McMannen Preschool
serves as a place of child care
excellence for the communi-
ty. We help parents of pre-
school age children establish a
base of faith and learning by strengthening the
bridge between education and God's love. We
are a place that supports them both. Education
is integrated with social skills and loving care in
fun and meaningful ways so you can rest
assured that we are giving the very best to every
child. We want to develop a long lasting
relationship with each family that will positively
impact and inspire a lifelong relationship with
Christ. As we get ready to open the doors on
September 6, I hope you will join me in
praying for the students who are currently
enrolled and their families, as well as the four
teachers:
Cheryle Takacs,
Courtney Wilkos,
Teresa Pollard and
Dana Newton.
We’re very excited that
the Bull City Gymnasts
will be back this year to be Reading Buddies to
our preschoolers and we’ll be doing joint
projects together.
The first floor of the education building will
soon be filled with the sounds of children's
laughter, singing, chatter in multiple languages
and love. Please feel free to stop by and say hi
any time you are at the church. We would love
to have you come read your favorite book,
bake cookies or do a craft with us, or share any
other gift or talent with us. Jackie is always
willing to talk about opportunities for you to
get to know us better!

McMannen UMC wants to remind you that we offer electronic giving as a way to automate your regular weekly offering. Electronic giving offers
convenience for individual congregation members and provides much-needed donation consistency for our congregation. Direct Debit Giving is used to automatically transfer funds from your checking or savings account to the
church’s bank account. Credit & Debit Card Giving lets you make offerings automatically on a predetermined schedule
using a credit or debit card. Online Giving lets you go to www..mcmannenumc.org at any time to set up an automatic donation plan, change your donation plan, make a one-time
donation or view your online donation history. As you contemplate future contributions, please consider electronic giving. Authorization forms and additional information are
available from the church office.

We’re getting closer to our goal! Only $1,000 more to reach our goal of $5,000.
Keep bringing in your change (the folding kind works too!).
Let’s bless the Kyaw family (from Burma) with their own home.
Once you fill your house, empty it and bring your change to the church,
then fill up the house again!
Wear your pajamas; bring your pillow and favorite blanket; and be prepared to have some fun!
Movie snacks will be provided. Donations are accepted so we can continue to provide this type of
monthly event.
In this family friendly movie, the main character learns how to relate to someone very
different from himself and work together to overcome challenges. Additionally, through an
unexpected turn of events in his life, the main character learns how to courageously and
nobly respond in a way that makes it apparent he is indeed good.
We’ll see you on the field!

Maybe you saw it in the news, maybe
you didn’t know anything about it, but
the United Methodist Church’s global
meeting, called “General Conference”
met in Portland in May 2016. It was
ten days of both blessing and struggle
for this, the top legislative body of the
UMC. This is the only group that officially speaks for the UMC.
On Sunday, July 24, three of the North Carolina Conference’s
representatives who were delegates to the convention were part of
a panel discussion hosted by Bethany UMC here in Durham.
Former Corridor District Superintendent Gray Southern, former
McMannen Treasurer and NC Conference UMW President
LaNella Smith, and former UMC Judicial Council (the UMC’s
supreme court) member and Bethany UMC member Belton
Joyner formed the panel.
The happenings at General Conference included:
Celebrating the creation of our denomination’s first Mission-
ary Conference in Vietnam
The authorization of a new United Methodist Hymnal. The
current hymnal was published in 1989. Hymnals seem to
have a lifespan of about a generation.
In a moving ceremony, formally recognizing, apologizing for,
and seeking forgiveness for the role of Methodists in and after
the tragic Sand Creek massacre of American Indians in 1864.
A celebration of Youth in Missions
A directive that church trustees must annually review their
church’s insurance policies
Extensive discussion and debate over the issue of human
sexuality and the church’s position and policy
Recognition of a Lay Order of Ministry
The ability of a resident bishop to authorize a Deacon to
preside over the sacraments where contextually appropriate.
Approval of a global budget
One Great Hour of Sharing will be changed to UMCOR
Sunday
Celebrating that our denomination has raised over $75 million
dollars to combat the spread of malaria, saving literally millions
of lives in the process.
Recognition that the global demographics of our church are
changing. In 1996 85% of the UMC was from the United
States. Now, in 2016, only 54% of the UMC is from the
United States. This is a seismic shift in the number of
Methodists in regions of the world!
As you may have seen or heard, the most contentious discussions
involved matters human sexuality. There were many fears and
much talk that the UMC would be unable to remain united; that
the denomination could split over the issue. The General
Conference asked the College of Bishops to offer a way forward.
They replied with a proposal, which was adopted, to 1) forgo all
legislative decisions on sexuality during the 2016 General
Conference, 2) to create a broadly diverse study commission to
examine all of the paragraphs of the Book of Discipline
concerning sexuality, and to offer a proposal, if possible before
the 2020 General Conference, which could be enacted by a
“called” General Conference, and 3) to work to maintain the unity
of the denomination.
There is much information online about this. Some say the
denomination “kicked the can down the road,” and others say
they bishops held us all together, others were dissatisfied with the
proposal. Since the General Conference, a number of Annual
Conferences and Boards of Ordained Ministry have taken action
that does not comply with the current Book of Discipline on this
issue. The issue is far from resolved, but we are reminded to pray
for our brothers and sisters across our connection, whether or not
we agree with them. We are also reminded in scripture about
God’s grace, and about our nature as humans, and responsibility
to fellow Christians:
Galatians 3:25-29 (NRSV) But now that
faith has come, we are no longer subject
to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you
are all children of God through faith. As
many of you as were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is
no longer slave or free, there is no longer
male and female; for all of you are one in
Christ Jesus. And if you belong to
Christ, then you are Abraham’s off-
spring, heirs according to the promise.
As your pastor, I am happy to talk with you about any of these
developments, or to help you find more information. Praise God
for the unity we have in Christ Jesus!
