Seeing Jesus Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'

In the eyes of a stranger. In the gratitude of a woman who now has food to feed her family for another day. In the appreciation of a man who treasured the extra time you stayed during your visit. Where do you see Jesus? Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” At St. Luke’s, we live with eyes that are open to see Jesus. We look for Jesus among people who are just hanging on day to day and recognize that they are part of God’s family. We look for Jesus among people who have power and influence to change
their surroundings and recognize that they are part of God’s family. We look for Jesus among the people we see every day and the people we meet only once in our lives. With eyes that are open to see Jesus, we recognize how God has blessed us in so many ways. “Because I see Jesus, I want to strengthen mission and ministry at St. Luke’s so other people can see Jesus and believe.” Like many generous members of our congregation, St. Luke’s is where I give my time. St. Luke’s is where I give my money. St. Luke’s is where I find people committed to helping others see Jesus and believe. Some of that commitment is lived out here at St. Luke’s and some is lived out far beyond our walls. At St. Luke’s, we have been called together to see Jesus. Some of us have been here for a lifetime, others have arrived in recent years. Together we strengthen our mission and ministry – each of us as we are able – all for the common goal of inviting other people to see Jesus and believe. “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” I was a child and you taught me, I was lost and you guided me, I was weary and you encouraged me, I was uncertain and you empowered me. From the stranger you welcomed and the woman you fed, from the man you visited and from Jesus walking with you, thank you for strengthening our mission and ministry with your gifts. Sunday School Parent Coffee Fellowship Join us in the atrium between services on Sunday, October 14, for fellowship, coffee and treats. Sarah Post, Aleli Scerba and Sandi Tarpey will be providing food and beverage. This will be a time to get to know each other better and share any questions or ideas you may have for our Sunday School program. We look forward to seeing you there!
Fire Drill We are planning an all-Sunday School Fire Drill toward the end of the Education hour on Sunday, October 14.
Children and teachers will evacuate the building as they practice where to go and what to do in case of a fire emergency. Please alert your child ahead of time, and teachers will do the same that day, so we can have an efficient, safe and quick drill, which is so important for the safety of our children, teachers and other members.

Picnic Thank You!
Monarch butterflies en route to Mexico Thank you to all who participated in the Monarch butterfly project at St. Luke’s this past summer. Some of those butterflies will spend the winter in Mexico and head back this way next spring.
If you still have your plastic caterpillar container and the small carrying bag, please leave them for Iris Henderson on top of one of the coat racks. Thanks also, to all those who contributed the small shopping bags that are used to carry the caterpillars. Your contributions were much appreciated.

Animal Blessing St. Francis Sunday, October 7 – 10:00 AM
On October 7, we will have a blessing of the animals on the west lawn. This is an All Sunday School event for children, parents and members.
The blessing of the animals is done to commemorate the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi, whose love for all creation was evident in everything he did.
All friendly pets are invited on a leash or in a carrier, or you can bring a picture of your companion animal to be blessed. We will also remember our animal companions who have passed away this year. You will have time to pick up or drop off your pet at home between the normal worship times of 8:30 and 11:00.
In case of rain, we will meet in Henderson Hall. NO pets please, but you may want to bring a picture.
Sunday School Offerings
Keep an eye on the God Will Provide bulletin board (across from the elevator on the way up the stairs) to see how many bed nets the children are purchasing with their offerings toward the ELCA Malaria Campaign.
$10 buys one bed net, and 5 bed nets are represented with one net on the board (for now, at least!). Thank you for your generosity!
If you have a 2-year-old, there is a monthly Sunday School class for you to share with your child. Ingrid Henehan leads this class in the church nursery. The first class will meet on Sunday October 21. You may bring your child up to Henderson Hall at 9:45 a.m. for the opening time with all the children, and then Ingrid will bring you downstairs to the nursery to continue your
class. Please fill out a 'new families' Sunday School registration form, as we would like to have your child's birth and baptism dates in our records, as well as your contact information. The form can be found on the Children's Education page of the church's website (www.stlukespr.org/education/children). St. Luke’s Sunday, October 14 We celebrate our namesake on Sunday, October 14. Luke was known as a physician, healer, and artist. In honor of St. Luke, we will include the Rite of Healing in our morning worship services.

Candlelight Service
St. Luke’s 73rd annual Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols will be held on Sunday, December 2, with the prelude beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Sing with the adult choirs for the Candlelight service! Singers are invited to join with the choirs as we prepare for this special seasonal service.
Rehearsals will be held on the following dates: Thursdays Oct. 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 29 -- 8:00-9:15 p.m. Sunday Nov. 25 -- 6:30-7:45 p.m. Saturday Dec.1, Dress rehearsal -- 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Sunday School Christmas Pageant Planning On December 16, the Sunday School children will present a Christmas Pageant for the congregation between services in Henderson Hall. It will be a traditional pageant involving all the children in a variety of ways, as they tell the story of Jesus’ birth through music and narration. Where do you see Jesus?
Reformation Sunday on October 28th is a festival worship and an appropriate time to celebrate our mission and ministry. During worship, you will be invited to bring to the altar your 2013 St. Luke’s intention-to-give card. These will be mailed to every household the week of October 22nd, along with inspiring messages from your fellow members, each answering the question, “Where do you see Jesus?” We are called to be the church as a community. We are called to give thanks to the Lord for he is good! We do this by putting to work the gifts we have been given through our time, talents and treasure. God is an abundant God. We see the love and generosity of God every day.
I see Jesus … In Frank, my neighbor, who mysteriously appeared at
my back door the very day my clothes dryer needed a handyman.
In the kindness of a stranger when Sam, my teen-aged son, experienced his first flat tire.
In the warm hug of a fellow church member on Sunday morning.
In the forgiveness of a friend when I unintentionally caused her pain.
In the face of Kevin Jacobson when he talked about his ministry in Suriname.
Please join us Tuesday October 2 at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast and an enlightening conversation about Physics and God led by Pastor Koch. Topic: What’s the God Particle? What does it have to do with God? Recently scientists at CERN, the European research facility in Switzerland, believe that they have discovered the elusive Higgs Boson (“The God Particle”), the particle at the center of everything as we know it. Wheth-er it is the sun that gives us light, the electricity we use, the fuel we burn in our autos or even the food we eat, anything
that involves either energy or matter (or both) involves the Higgs Boson. It is in the middle of everything! Pastor George Koch has been involved in dialogues between religion and science for more than twenty years and was the editor of Covalence, the ELCA newsletter on faith and science.

October 3- Jonah The Lord asked Jonah to give a message to the powerful city of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. Assyria had been a feared enemy of the people of Israel. So when God called Jonah to deliver his message to the hated Assyrians, Jonah wanted no part of it and ran away. God pursued him and caused a great fish to swallow him. We will find out what happened to Jonah and find out how his story relates to us today.
October 10, 17 and 24th- 1 Peter Peter was a disciple of Jesus who became a leader in the early church. This letter talks about how the early church expanded into Asia and discusses issues of community, mission and suffering. God chooses us, saves us and gives us new life. He strengthens and supports us as we live as His chosen people. Join us as we discuss how to live as God’s chosen people today.

National Youth Gathering 2015 – Detroit It’s never too early to start planning.
In July 2012, 37 St. Luke’s youth and adult chaperones attended the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Now it’s time for current 7th-10th graders to start thinking about 2015.
On Wednesday, October 17, youth and parents are encouraged to attend this first look at Detroit 2015.
5:30 – 7th and 8th grade students for team responsibilities
5:45 – Parents of 7th and 8th graders join us for a review of our worship unit
6:00 – 9th-10th graders AND Parents join the group for a look ahead to Detroit 2015 and what it will take to send approximately 40 high school youth and chaperones on this event. We’ll also hear from youth who attended the 2012 Gathering.
We plan to end by 6:30, but will stay around for questions after the meeting ends.

Thank you to Dee Dee Kohlndorfer and Sue Weber who are our High School Sunday Youth Fourm teaching team for the year and to Kate Allen, Tim Freedlund and Cindy Davenport who will be key leaders for social and service opportunities this year.
Sept 22 was a volleyball and pizza event for all high school youth. That afternoon, we planned dates for events for the fall and into the winter. An email with event dates decided on Sept 22 will be sent to all households with high school youth.

Search Process We have posted a job description for a Director of Youth Education Ministries to coordinate ministries with 6th-12th grade youth and their families. The position will be 20 hours per week.

Open your Heart to the call of Stewardship at this most important time!
Preparing the Altar for Sunday mornings, weddings and baptisms is an important task.
We are looking for people who want to help. The commitment is minimal. You need only spend an hour or so on Saturdays (generally 2 months out of a year) and various Sundays (worked around your schedule) as best we can. You work with a partner and it is a special time that you spend at church preparing together.
Saturdays consist of a little dusting, setting out the Communion wine, bread, linens and filling of the candles.
Sunday is spent cleaning up after Communion.
We would love to have your help and will joyfully train and work with you so that you enjoy it as much as we do.

Today's gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who's number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God's community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray "your kingdom come" we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service.

We hear the prophet Jeremiah speaking for God and saying, “I will be their God and they shall be my people.” Where do you see Jesus? How can you help all God’s people see Jesus?
Dinner for Eight (or 7 or 6) Once again we will be forming dinner groups of four households (couples or singles). The concept is that the groups get together
four times between November and June. Each event is planned by one of the households. The dinners can be potlucks; appetizers in and dinner out; a regular dinner at home or anything that you want to plan.

Elijah Pantry Fundraiser! Saturday October 6 is the date for the 2012 Elijah Pantry fundraiser, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Edgebrook Lutheran Church in Chicago. This event will consist of hors d'oeuvres and entertainment
from all churches who help support Elijah's Pantry. St. Luke's will be providing some of the entertainment. Stay tuned. Contact Ken Schoy 847-823-3957 for information and tickets.

CROP Walk The CROP Walk will be Sunday, October 21 at 1:30 pm, beginning at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Gillick in Park Ridge.
Walkers should be done by 4:00 (or sooner if they take the 3 mile route instead of the 6 mile route.) St. Luke's will be one of the rest stops.
Crop Walks bring the whole Community together in a common goal. 25% of the money raised stays in our community and supports the Maine Township Food Pantry. Congregation Members, Parents and Children are welcome and encouraged to walk.

Why a campaign
against malaria?
The ELCA, through the ELCA Malaria Campaign, is joining hands with eleven Lutheran church bodies in
Africa and becoming part of an historic global movement to say, “Enough is enough!” No child, no person, should die of a disease that is both preventable and treatable. Therefore, the ELCA Malaria Campaign has committed to raise $15 million to help prevent, treat, and educate communities in Africa about malaria and eliminate deaths from this disease — FOR GOOD!

Sunday, November 4, is All Saints’ Sunday, the day we at St. Luke's give thanks for and remember those who have gone before us as we name them and light candles in their memory. Again this year, we invite you to bring photos of your loved ones for display in the Atrium. Photos can be any size, framed or unframed, and can be brought to the church office Sunday morning, October 28, and throughout the week prior to All Saints’ Sunday. On Sunday, November 4, as we enter the Atrium, we will have a tangible reminder of “the great cloud of witnesses” who have shaped each of our lives and the life of our congregation.
