Escape to Contentment. Comparing kills contentment. And lack of contentment poisons the heart's ability to appreciate and say
“Thank you.” The old saying that says “I complained because I had no shoes until I saw someone who had no feet” is fine, until
you compare yourself with someone who wears a pair of two hundred dollar Johnston & Murphy shoes and drives a brand-new
Toyota Tundra truck. King David wrote a short psalm that gives us a map to
contentment and to thanksgiving. He wrote, “My heart is not
proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.” (Psalm
131:1). The first stop on the road to contentment and thanksgiving is humility. More from Lakan on page 2

Escape to Contentment cont.
A lot of people have the world and all its problems figured out. Humility is having a
proper perspective on who we are in our universe. It is coming to grips with our
limitations, our finiteness, our lack of strength. It is seeing ourselves the way God
sees us.
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of
man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:3, 4
There are a lot of things we do not know and more we do not understand. The
Hebrew word for “proud” is the same word for “high.” It is the word that describes
God in Isaiah 55:9, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways
higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
God's ways are higher, not ours. His thoughts are higher, not ours. To get to
contentment and thanksgiving, we first need to get off our high horse.
The second stop on the road to contentment and thanksgiving is a quiet heart.
“But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a
weaned child is my soul within me.” (v. 2)
A weaned child no longer cries for his mother's milk. He may have screamed
incessantly at the beginning of the weaning process but now he is content with his
bottle or with table food. A quiet heart means he is no longer dependent on the
things without which, he thought, he could not live.
A friend who was struggling financially excitedly told me that he just saved a
thousand dollars. I was excited with him until he told me how. He went to an estate
sale and bought a set of firearms worth $2,000 for only $1,000! It is a set he had
always wanted and could not live without.
What are things you need to be weaned off?
The third and most important stop on the journey to contentment and thanksgiving is
hope in the LORD. “...put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.” (v.
3) Hope means “to wait expectantly,” to wait for something that is certain. The
object of this hope is not our circumstances but our Lord. Griping and complaining
are a sure sign we are not hoping in the Lord.
“Why would you ever complain, O Jacob, or, whine, Israel, saying, 'GOD has
lost track of me. He doesn’t care what happens to me'? Do you not know? Have you
not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”
Isaiah 40:27, 28
To hope in God means we trust him for everything. And when we trust him for
everything we see and appreciate everything he is going on in our lives, the good and
the bad, the pleasant and the unpleasant. Because we understand his purpose.
Escape to Contentment concluded
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he fore-
knew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order
that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he
predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and
those whom he justified he also glorified.” Romans 8:28-30
We may not understand everything that is going on in our life and in the
world, but we can trust in the Lord who is in charge of both. Joseph, Jacob's son,
expressed this hope in the Lord at his deathbed:
“And Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die, but
God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land
that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.' Then Joseph
made the sons of Israel swear, saying, 'God will surely visit you,
and you shall carry up my bones from here.'” Genesis 50:24, 25
Joseph was so certain about what God was going to do more than four hun-
dred years later that he gave instructions about his bones.
May we learn to put our hope in God that we find contentment in him that
produces a heart of thanksgiving. For everything.

Our AWANA clubs need our help collect-ing new or gently used items for the AWANA store. Several times a year, stu-dents are allowed to “buy” items from the store with “shares” they earn by completing sections in their workbooks and memorizing scriptures. The first Wednesday in December, they have their Christmas store and are encour-aged to purchase gifts for all their family members and friends. There are collec-tion boxes in the foyer and in the office hallway. If you have any questions, please contact Vickie LeWallen (895-0330) or the church office.
We will present our Christmas Musical “Signs of Christmas” on Sunday evening, December 16th at 5PM in the sanctuary. Afterwards we will enjoy a time of good food and fun
in the Fellowship Hall with our families and friends! Come and bring your favorite Christmas sweets to share with everyone. The church will supply the drinks, etc.
