I remember well the very first time
I made hospital visits as a newly
minted Rabbi. I was nervous…and
nervous about two things in
particular:
How could I walk into a stranger’s
hospital room – intrude on their
privacy (even if I asked from the
doorway up I might enter) – and introduce myself by
asserting, “Hi, I’m your Rabbi”? I sure didn’t feel like
I was their Rabbi, at least not one week into my tenure!
Even though I’ve never had that much chutzpah. I knew
I had to overcome my own reluctance and self-doubts,
and just do it.
And how would they react? With one exception (I later
came to know him as being grouchy even on a good
day), everyone received me warmly, was happy to meet
me, helped to put me at ease, and wanted to know about
me. I had to make an effort to direct the conversation
back to them!
The second thing that concerned me was whether I would
be able to bring them comfort and encouragement. I
discovered that the rabbinic adage about visiting the sick
alleviating 1/60 of the illness was not true: it alleviated
much more than that! I wasn’t there poking, prodding, or
evaluating; I was not there to do something to them; I
was there to do something for them—just by being there,
and they greatly appreciated that.
I think the same thing is true when we pay your shivah
call. We’re a bit nervous and uncomfortable; the whole
thing is awkward. But the good that we do far outweighs
any sense of personal discomfort that we may
experience.
When you overcome your own hesitations and concerns,
and pay a condolence call to members of our shul – even
though you have no idea who they are, you’re asserting
that we are all part of one community – and not just any
community, but a kehilla kedosha, a sacred community, a
fellowship whose bonds are strong and meaningful; we
share something important in common.
KEHILLA KEDOSHA, A SACRED COMMUNITY
I guarantee you that you will be welcomed warmly,
just as I was welcomed into every hospital room –
(well, almost…). When the people sitting shivah
realize that you may not know anyone else in the
room, they will make an extra effort to make you feel
comfortable and welcome. Your visit will be greatly
appreciated – all the more so because, aside from our
common membership in Gesher Shalom, you were
heretofore strangers. By making that visit you will
both discover the special blessing of belonging to a
synagogue, and come to realize that just by your
presence you have brought a measure of comfort.
Most of our congregation is comprised of 3-day-a-
year people, with an occasional yahrzeit thrown in.
And yet, come the high holidays, we expect to be
instantaneously transformed from solitary individuals
who rarely encounter one another, into a community.
I know coming to shul more often may not be your
thing (I nevertheless would urge you to come, and
most especially to linger after the service, because
that’s when and where the communal bonds are
formed), but allow me to encourage you to respond to
the next Bereavement Notification you receive by
paying that shivah call, even to someone whose name
and face you do not recognize.
It will give both you and the bereaved a greater sense
of belonging and community, and the next time Rosh
Hashannah and Yom Kippur roll around, you won’t
be praying with as many strangers around you. You’ll
be praying with your community.
A TIME TO PRAY
One of the liturgical highlights of our Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur services, is the powerful
quintessential prayer for the Days of Awe—the
“Un’taneh Tokef.” It paints a picture of God’s
creatures passing before the divine throne on the
annual day of judgement.
“Who shall live and who shall die; who shall perish
by fire, and who by water, who by sword, and who by
wild beast, who by
earthquake and who by
plague… but repentance
(T’shuvah) prayer (t’fillah)
and acts of righteousness
(tz’dakah) can avert the
severity of the decree.”
I hope we will all sing
along on the holidays to the
well-known refrain “B’rosh
Hashanah.”
This coming High Holy
Days, we yearn and pray for the gathering of the
community. We say “Zochreinu L’chayim, “
remember us with life.
My family joins me in praying for happiness, well-
being and peace for you and your family the people
of Israel and the entire world.
SHANAH TOVAH!
It’s hard to imagine that
summer has come and gone,
and autumn is near as we
prepare for a new season. Rosh
Hashanah will ar r ive at the
very end of September. The
Jewish New Year is a time of
personal reflection, and
a time to
assess how we have been
successful, and where there is
room for improvement.
Over the years, no matter
where I have served, there
have been congregants who
would say to me how they’re
not so religious and don’t
really know the prayers. So
how can they pray? I would
tell them not to worry; the
only necessary thing is that
they are willing to “open their hearts.” The Hebrew
word “to pray” is “l’hitpallel” which means “to
render a verdict about yourself.” We long for God to
listen to our prayers, our hopes and dreams, and even
our pain.
This past spring and summer, I had the opportunity to
visit two different congregations where a liturgical
poem was sung by the Cantor and responded by the
congregation. The prayer is called “Anim Z’mirot.”
The first line reads: “I will weave songs because my
soul yearns for You…”
While still a student at Cantorial school at JTS, I had
the honor of meeting with the late great Theologian
Abraham Joshua Heschel in his pr ivate office and
study, where the two of us would randomly chant
different prayers. I vividly recall his comment on the
“Anim Z’mirot” rendition as something like:
“In order to pray, our spirit must have a
song that’s free to express one’s feelings.”
Prayer is not about the virtuosity of the
Cantor, the skill of the Rabbi, or the length or
brevity of the service.
LULAV AND ETROG
We encourage everyone to purchase their own
set of Lulav and Etrog for use in their Sukkah, at
home, or to be brought into the shul for Hallel
and to participate in the Hoshanot procession.
We hope that many will continue with their
observance of this tradition, and that others will
be inspired to either start or resume their
participation. Sets can be ordered through the
Synagogue office:
Regular set(s) at $40 each,
deluxe set(s) at $45 each.
Deadline is: October 4th. 2019
