From the Pastor

For nine seasons, more or less, I have watched the television show, The Office. From the first episode, airing March 24, 2005, to the final episode, airing May 16, 2013, the series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. All 201 episode were filmed as a mock documentary (a mocumentary) using a single-camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track to simulate life in an ordinary office. Among the virtues of the series finale of The Office was a memorable last line. Talking one last time to the “documentary crew,” and mulling their decision to spend years on this documentary about a paper company, Pam (one of the main characters) says, “There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?” The rhythm found in the liturgical seasons of the church reflect the rhythm of life — with its celebrations of anniversaries and its seasons of quiet growth and maturing. Ordinary Time (that is ordered or numbered time) is celebrated in two segments: from the Monday following the Baptism of Our Lord up to Ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to the First Sunday of Advent. Thus, Ordinary Time is the longest season of the Liturgical Year. With green as the color (the color of hope and growth), Ordinary Time has thirty-three or thirty-four Sundays (depending on the year) to meditate upon Christ–his life, miracles, healings, and teachings: all in the light of his Resurrection (the Easter season). In Ordinary Time, we grow and increase in faith as we journey the level ground that is terrain between the mountain tops of Easter and Christmas. Sunday by Sunday, we, the people of faith, mark our journey with Christ in the common ordinary of the day. As we enter the long season of Ordinary Time, continue to grow and mature in the faith. Christ shows up in the common and the ordinary. Hear the words again of a fictitious character from a fictitious paper company in Scranton, PA: Pam says, “There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?”

SESSION REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ST. ANDREWS AND ARRANGEMENT WITH WLNC

At their May 20th meeting, the Session of the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church voted unanimously to reaffirm our church’s commitment to St. Andrews University by agreeing to the request of President Paul Baldasare to share up to ten hours a week of Dr. Neal Carter’s time to serve as University Chaplain for the 2013-2014 academic year. President Baldasare remarked how this relationship has been very meaningful to the St. Andrews community.

During the discussion of the request, several members of the Session spoke of the unique relationship that has existed between St. Andrews and our church for over 50 years and the importance of nurturing that relationship. It was noted that this time spent at St. Andrews also fulfills Dr. Carter’s responsibility to be involved in the work of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina. Lastly, we discussed that now that we are a single pastor congregation, it is incumbent upon the leaders of the church and the membership to “step up” and make certain that the vital work of our church continues as always.

Also at the May 20th meeting, the Session unanimously voted to continue the arrangement with WLNC to broadcast our 11:00 AM Sunday morning worship service. It was stated that this is important to our members who are shut ins as well as those who are unable to attend on any given Sunday. It was also noted that Dr. Carter’s participation in the morning show on Tuesday and Thursday is from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM. This is the note received from Gary Gallman: Since from time to time I am questioned about the arrangement between WLNC and Laurinburg Presbyterian, I thought I’d reiterate how I view it. When Fred owned the station I think he considered it his tithe to provide the time for your Sunday morning service broadcast. I decided to continue the practice in exchange for the time you give to the station as a contributor to The Morning Show at least twice per week. You help fulfill my vision for the show and I consider it a great service to the station and to the community. I’m looking forward to continuing our relationship. Gary Gallman

At LPC there is always ‘Room for One More.’ Actually, there is room for many more at the VBS Fun Fair. We appreciate those of you that have agreed to lead our children on this summer’s faith journey. We are still searching for someone to keep the nursery for our staff and a couple of energetic fun-loving people to lead the recreation and games. Helpers are also needed in the kitchen and serving snacks. As soon as the VBS staff is aboard, we will get together to share ideas and plan exciting activities. Also, we would like to thank those of you that have offered to share items from our neighbors in Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Zimbabwe, and Mexico. We will set up the display the first week in July, but you can drop items off at the church office when convenient. It would be helpful if you could label your items and jot down a little information to help with the explanation. Knowing that church members have visited these countries, seen the animals and brought back these souvenirs makes these countries come alive to the children. So, please keep looking for items to share. Save the last week of June to help create decorations and props. The planning team will attempt to schedule work sessions on days and times that are convenient. It would be helpful if we knew which days—Monday thru Friday, and which session—morning (9-12), afternoon (1-4), or night (6-9) would work for the most people. If you have a work preference, email Carolina Caddell ([email protected]), Carol Sellers ([email protected]), or the church office ([email protected]). After receiving your feedback, we will publish work sessions dates and times. Registration materials for children age 4 through the Fifth Grade (completed) will be available in the church office next week. We will also have the forms available at the table in the hallway of the educational building following Sunday services. It will be very helpful if completed forms are returned before the end of June so that materials and snacks are plentiful. Our Safe Sanctuary Policy requires collection of health and safety information before a child is left in our care. If you are inviting a friend, please pick up a form to give their parents. The transformation of our church into a colorful and exciting fair will happen the first week in July. Of course, Thursday, July 4th is a holiday; therefore, help is needed Monday through Wednesday. Hopefully, by Friday the Fair Grounds will be finished, classrooms ready, and the VBS staff eager to welcome old and new friends. Thanks for all the support! Carol Sellers and Carolina Caddell, VBS Co-directors
