Presidents’ Letter Dear Tobay Members,

The New Year has arrived faster than you can say, “Rosh Hashanah!” We each look forward to the 5776 New Year, and pray for blessings of good health, peace, and success. We also hope that we can continue to be

dedicated and strong as Hadassah women!

What a fabulous summer we had! Thank you, Sheila Taylor, for hosting our annual pool party. We had cool but dry weather, and when mixed with some great food, friends and fun, topped off with a warm dip in the pool, relaxing

yoga, and friendly games, the afternoon was unbeatable.

Our Second Annual Comedy Night fundraiser was a huge success! Thank you, Madeline Budiansky and Audrey Teitler, for spearheading this laughter-filled event. Also our Hadassah Heroines Luncheon was a lovely way to honor our generous Heroines: great idea, Madeline. And for those who aren’t sure what a Hadassah Heroine is, ask us! Becoming a Heroine is another way to help support medical research and continue building up our medical community in

Israel.

Hadassah National elected our new national president and executive board in July at the annual National Business Meeting & Symposium in Philadelphia. Ellen Hershkin was officially elected as the new National President. During her

42- year membership in Hadassah, Ms. Hershkin has served as a national vice president, national secretary, the national coordinator of Young Judaea, national chair of Hadassah's Membership Outreach Department, the national chair of the Public Affairs Department and the National Office in Israel, national chair of Hadassah's Convention in 2004 and as a member of various committees. Ms. Hershkin is our organization's 26th president in our 103 years, and will lead our 330,000+ membership through these early years of Hadassah's second century. We wish

our new national leaders a successful term.

In this New Year 5776, we will, once again, reach for the High Holy Day prayer book, or Machzor to pray. Machzor comes from the Hebrew root which means “return,” “restore,” or “reflect,” and that is exactly what we Hadassah women tend to do at this time each year. We reflect on who we are as caring, Zionist women; we restore and renew our commitment to our cause; we ask members to return to being more active in our organization; and we return to our activities in the fall with restored energy and ideas. We look forward to seeing each of you return to us this fall so we can continue to forge new friendships, pave fresh paths toward personal growth and education, and rededicate ourselves in our support of Israel, medical advancement and health care,

and women’s advocacy.

. B'Shalom,

Marcy Alper & Linda Hillel,

The Secret Ethnic Cleansing of Palestinians

By Khaled Abu Toameh

It is no secret that most of the Arab countries have long been

mistreating their Palestinian brethren by subjecting them to a

series of Apartheid-like discriminatory laws and regulations that

often deny them basic rights.

In countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria,

Palestinians are treated as second and third class citizens, a fact

that has forced many of them to seek better lives in the U.S.,

Canada, Australia and various European countries. As a result,

many Palestinians today feel unwelcome in their countries of

origin and other Arab countries.

The condition of Palestinians in Arab countries began to

deteriorate after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. The

Palestinians were the first to “congratulate” Saddam Hussein on

his invasion of Kuwait, a country that used to provide the PLO

with tens of millions of dollars in financial aid every year. But

many fled Kuwait to be away from the anarchy and lawlessness

that prevailed after the Iraqi invasion.

When Kuwait was liberated the following year by a U.S.-led

coalition, some 200,000 Palestinians were expelled from the oil-

rich emirate in retaliation for having supported Saddam Hussein’s

invasion of it. An additional 150,000 Palestinians had fled Kuwait

before the U.S.-led coalition war.

Most of the Palestinians who left Kuwait voluntarily, or who

were expelled, settled in Jordan.

The Palestinians in Iraq are now also paying a heavy price.

Since 2003, the number of Palestinians there has dropped from

25,000 to 6,000. Palestinian activists say the Iraqis are waging a

campaign of ethnic cleansing against the country’s Palestinian

population.

Abu al-Walid, a Palestinian researcher who has been

following the plight of the Palestinians in Iraq for several

years, pointed out that 19,000 out of the 25,000 Palestinians in

Iraq have already fled the country. He also noted that

Palestinians were being targeted on a daily basis on the pretext

of involvement in terrorism.

The Palestinians in Iraq are paying the price for meddling in

the internal affairs of the country. This is what also happened to

Palestinians in Syria, Lebanon and Libya. Palestinians often find

themselves involved, both directly and indirectly, in the rivalries

that take place inside Arab countries. And when the fire reaches

them, they start screaming for help, as is the case today in Iraq.

But what is most interesting is the complete indifference

displayed by international human rights organizations, the media

and the Palestinian Authority toward the mistreatment of

Palestinians in Arab countries.

International journalists do not care about the Palestinians in

the Arab world because this is not a story that can be blamed on

Israel. An Arab killing or torturing an Arab is not an item worth

publishing in a major newspaper in the U.S., Canada or Britain.

But when a Palestinian in the West Bank complains about the

Israeli authorities or Jewish settlers, many Western journalists

waste no time rushing to the scene to cover this “major”

development.

Not only do the Arab countries despise the Palestinians, they

also want them to be the problem of Israel alone. That is why

since 1948, Arab governments have refused to allow Palestinians

permanently to settle in their countries and become equal

citizens. Now these Arab countries are not only denying

Palestinians their basic rights, they are also killing and torturing

them, and subjecting them to ethnic cleansing. And this is all

happening while world leaders and governments continue to bury

their heads in the sand and point an accusing finger at Israel.

Mr. Toameh, an Arab Muslim, is a veteran award-winning

journalist who has been covering Palestinian affairs for nearly

three decades. This article is adapted from an essay which first

appeared on the website of Gatestone Institute, a think tank and

media watchdog headed by John Bolton, former US Ambassador

to the United Nations.

Once again, we enjoyed a most interesting book discussion of "Joshua: A Brooklyn Tale" facilitated by Anna Silverstein at the home of Arleen Kaufman, our gracious hostess. Thank you to both of you for the wonderful jobs well done.

Our next book club will be meeting on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the home of Sheila Taylor, 41 Orchard Ct., Woodbury, N.Y., when we will discuss "The Kitchen Boy" by Robert Alexander. Please try to join us then.

Thanks. RSVP to Audrey (516) 931-6411, Arleen (516) 433-7817 or Sheila (516) 692-8363.

Joint Research with

China at Hadassah

Medical Center

Earlier this year Hadassah Medical Center had

the honor of hosting a delegation from the Chinese

Academy of Sciences, which met with research

counterparts from Hadassah’s Biological Psychiatry

Lab. Hadassah’s team, headed by Professor Benjamin

Lerer, was joined by the Chinese delegation, comprised

of eight researchers and headed by Prof. XiaoJiang Li.

Joint research was conducted on the genetic role in the

development of the central nervous system, and in

awareness of psychiatric disorders. The research was

jointly funded by the Israel Academy of Sciences and

Humanities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Tamar Peretz, interim director of Hadassah

Medical Center, congratulated both teams on the

successful research, stressing the integral part that

Hadassah’s Biological Psychiatry Lab plays in

innovative psychiatric research.
