Presidents
Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln was the president when the South broke away from the North.
He did not believed in Slavery. After the south lost the civil war, Lincoln
was killed. All of the former slaves were frighten by the death. Abraham
was the person who wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. It eventually
freed many slaves, and was made to punish the south for breaking away
from the country during the Civil War. As a result he helped end slavery.
John F. Kennedy
Kennedy helped pass laws to end segregation and discrimination. Hehelped thenineblack student into Central High School safe. He also helped
more Blacks win the right to vote. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was
passed after his death, made it illegal to force Blacks to use separate
schools, theaters, restaurants, buses, restrooms, and trains. He also died.

Key Events
December 1, 1955 a black woman named Rosa Parks refused to
give up her bus seat after a long day at work. She was arrested. In
response to her arrest the Montgomery black community launchesa
bus boycott. It lasted for about 10 years.
August 28, 1963 200,000 people join the March on Washington.
Martin Luther King deliveredhis famous speech I Have a Dream at
the Lincoln Memorial.
February 1, 1960 four black students from North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical College begin a sit-in at a segregated
Woolworths lunch counter. Theywere refused service but they were
able to stay sited at the counter. While sitting at the counter they
were being teased by white men. As a result of this the same four were
served at the same dinner. Student sit-ins would be effective
throughout the Deep South in all public facilities.
April 11, 1968 president Johnson sign the Civil rights Act of
1968, prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing
of housing.

Famous Students
Ruby Bridges was the first black child to attend William Frantz Elementary
School, as well as the first African American child to go to an all-white
elementary school located in the South. The white parents were against the Civilrights Movement and refused to send the children to school with Ruby. Ruby was
forced to be taught in a separate classroom with no classmates and her teacher.
In Little Rock, Arkansas, nine black students walk into Central High School. They
must be protected by armed guards because the white students, white parents and
even the Governor of Arkansas didnt want Blacks and Whites to attend the same
school. Whites tried to attack the nine students to keep Blacks out of their school.
James Meredith was the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.

January 30, 2006- Coretta Scott King, Dr. Martin
Luther king Jr. Wife, died from a stroke at age 78.
October 24, 2005-Rosa Parks dies at age 92
August 1955-Emmett Till, 14 year old, wasvisiting family when he was kidnapped. After a bet
with his friend, he was beaten, shot, and dumped
in the Tallahatchie River because he whistled at
white women. The young boy died a hero.
February 21, 1965- Malcolm X was shot to
death by a black man.
April 4, 1968- Martin Luther King was shot at
the age of 39 in the head while standing over the
balcony outside his hotel room. James Earl Ray was
convicted of this crime.
