Elul is passing quickly. This cycle of the moon guides and carries us into another New Year. This month of preparation brings with it the possibility of drawing something new into the world. The rituals and traditions of Elul give us the time and space and garments to open to the idea of doing things differently. *The tradition suggests that the letters that spell Elul are an acronym for the verse from the Song of Songs that teach us that we belong to each other—I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine. This belonging is what gives meaning to every breath, and this belonging is also what makes us so vulnerable that we break from our losses.
For years I have taught that the holiday cycle is meant to push us to be ready for the New Year; to push us to be ready to wish each other a sweet New Year and mean it in spite of what we know can happen. The New Year is all about renewed hope in a better future. Something new is drawn into the world that rebuilds our trust in ourselves, others and creation, as imperfect as it all is. Without awareness and without a practice, we could miss the very opportunity that will give our lives meaning, will help us move forward and will bring healing to our bruised souls.
I believe this and I also know I am not ready to let go of the sorrow of the past year. Still in our year of mourning I will face these holy days sad and broken. But I will face them for there is no way to journey through this loss other than to keep going with more love, more depth, and more compassion for the suffering of us all. To do this takes the practice of less self, less asking ‘why us,' and less holding on to guilt and pain to leave room and expand into something we have not yet imagined.
I am most grateful for the gift of time of the past months. I will be at services for the holy days at the JCC and for second day Rosh Hashanah at CRC with Jim. With so many of you who have had challenges this year, I will look to the prayers, the teachings and the music to pull us up into a New Year of healing and hope. I pray that the torah portions we read each year will have new teachings to guide us, that the prayers and kavannot will reveal something we need to see and hear and that the presence of a community that cares deeply about what is happening within our hearts and homes and out on the streets of our cities, on our borders and throughout the world, will remind us that we are not alone, that we are in arms bigger than our own.
I look forward to seeing you as we move through the holy days together. May they be days of Awe--not fear. May they be days of teshuvah—the kind of transformation that lets us forgive and be forgiven. May they be days that help us honor those to whom we will always belong as we dare to love more fully and live more fiercely as we stand shoulder to shoulder and wish each other a good year, a healthy year and a year of peace.
With much love and gratitude,
Rabbi Susan

Shanda, There is NoneSunday, October 71:00 - 2:30 pm at CRC * No Meeting on Sunday, September 2
This is our mental health-mental illness open program meeting on the first Sunday of every month. These sessions are an opening because we are at square one on this subject. We are turning our attention to the next hurdle of service which is mental illness. Shanda means shame. There is none.
We are under-prepared, under-educated, under-equipped. We are still laboring under the shanda curtain of shame. We all have the experience in our families, among our friends, some of us more hidden than others. We begin by talking about it; let’s talk about mental illness.
Our sessions are divided up into a strategizing, a teaching, a sharing, and a ritual all designed to develop tools to strengthen inner life.

Mussar Class Forming
Mussar is a millennium old Jewish tradition of personal spiritual development. It offers insight and guidance for living. By engaging in a mussar practice we learn to do our inner work. We uncover our intentions, consider our actions, and reflect on our mark in the world. As we learn and practice we become more skillful parents, more attentive partners and more in tune with who we want to be. The teachings, meditations and practices presented are based on the traditional texts and wisdom of Judaism.
A Mussar course is being offered by The Mussar Institute (TMI) at CRC beginning Saturday, September 15, 2018. The course will be facilitated by Felice Joyce, a TMI trained and experienced mussar va'ad facilitator who has been studying and practicing mussar for over 10 years. The class will cover 4 middot (Character traits) during 8 class sessions: humility, loving kindness, strength and faith. Classes will be held on 9/15, 9/29, 10/13, 10/27, 11/10, 11/17, 12/15 and 12/22. You will receive materials to read prior to each class. The class fee is $90. No prior knowledge is required. Classes will mostly be held on Saturdays from 1-2:30 pm. Enrollment must be completed by September 5th. For more information about mussar, the course or how to enroll contact Felice Joyce: [email protected].

A Note From The Nest, CRC Early Childhood CenterWow! The Nest is open and underway! We celebrated our open-ing all week long as our first group of infants and toddlers joined us in our newly renovated classrooms. Our infants are getting acclimated to their new environment and interacting with other babies. During our opening week, Rabbi Susan joined us to blow the Shofar with our preschool age children. We sang, we danced in the Oneg, we rode our cars and tricycles around the building, played in our new backyard space and went on a field trip across the parking lot to visit the CRC Mitzvah Garden. One thing is for sure, everyone sleeps well at night from our action-packed days!
With September almost upon us we will be spending time learning about the Fall holidays, enjoying apples, decorating the Sukkah as well as eating lunch in the Sukkah, and of course, dancing with the Torah.
The warm welcome to me and the generosity shown towards The Nest is overwhelming. We have been asked to keep the Virtual Shower open on Amazon as some members were away for the summer and would still like an opportunity to shop. Visit www.centralreform.org for the link to the Wishlist. We have added items for our gross motor space as well as other items.
Shana Tova from our Nest to yours!
