Dear McCornack Families and Friends,

Thank you for another great kick off to the school year!

InstructionTeachers have been rolling their sleeves up and diving deep into Math instruction using

the newly adopted district curriculum. It involves a daily dose of fluency building, a

time students practice math facts, as well as 60 minutes of activities that span word

problems to application with a stronger hands on focus.

We focus at least 2 hours on Language Arts a day as it is one stepping-stone to

continual life-long learning. It involves 60 minutes of whole class instruction, 30 minutes of differentiated small group reading instruction (to challenge all

levels of learners) and intervention sessions for students who are approaching grade level. It is finely complimented by a Writer’s Workshop session where

students delve into the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing) as well as writing for various purposes -- Personal Narrative,

Fictional Narrative, Expository, and Persuasive. Staff will be collaborating regularly to increase knowledge of student writing skills across all grade levels as

well as sharpen instruction to support excellent writing.

Site Council – Charting Our Future At our first Site Council meeting of the year (September 15), we reviewed the updates from the awarded Safe Routes to School grant that McCornack received

last year with construction to begin on bike racks, crosswalks and sidewalks that will make our school safely accessible to our families. We also reviewed and

approved upcoming grants (particularly EEF and Selco) that staff members have developed proposals for. The developing agenda for our next meeting includes a

school improvement action plan and Churchill Region conversations about district/state budgets, and how Site Council members will collaborate with parents and

staff to act on this year’s school improvement plan. Please check out our website for more information about Site Council happenings.

Parent InvolvementThank you to our PTO for the hours of hard work to get our Jog-a-thon ‘up and running’! A special thank you to the PTO Board -- Danielle Benson, Jen Tucker,

Cheryl Yorges, Misty Hill, Debby Laimon, Laura Schildmeyer and Holly Powell for giving their time to support back to school events in addition to the Jog-a-Thon.

Please join the PTO as they hold their “Ways and Means” meeting on October 18, 6-7pm (Library), a meeting especially set aside to decide how the raised funds

will be utilized.

ReminderOn September 9th guardians received important paperwork in students’ weekly Friday folders. It is important that all families turn in all forms so that we have

all updated information to support your child. The Federal Free and Reduced Lunch application directly impacts our school by providing additional federal funding

for every identified student attending our school. It is through that funding that we are able to supplement our program with additional academic support for

students. Please verify that you have turned it in to your child’s homeroom teacher.

As we continue our focus on your child’s success, please don’t hesitate to ask questions and provide input to ensure that we are working together to the benefit

of your child. Here’s to a great year!

PTO News

The McCornack PTO is a vital part of your child’s school. It is important for your child’s success that you actively participate in their education. PTO is a great place to start!

PTO’s role at McCornack is to partner families with the school staff to make McCornack the best elementary school it can be. PTO helps organize volunteers with help in classrooms, fundraisers and other school events. Some of our events include: Popcorn Friday, Jog-a-thon, Holiday Bazaar,

Scholastic Book Fair, Art Walk and Carnival.

By the time you read this, students will have completed the 3rd annual Jog-a-thon. In the past, the money that the students Airliner Slates, Clickers, guest speakers for assemblies and funded field trips. It is the goal of the PTO to help enrich our students’ experience at McCornack.

I would like to extend an invitation to all of our McCornack families to attend our first PTO meeting of the school year on Monday, October 4th at 7:00pm in the library. During this meeting, we will hear from our Title 1 coordinator, Priscilla Ing. Mrs. Ing will be sharing information about what Title 1 means to McCornack and how it benefits the students. Principal Katsuda will take a few minutes to deliver her “Principal’s Update” during the meeting as well.

On Monday, October 18th, PTO will be holding the annual “Ways and Means” meeting in the library. At this meeting we will discuss how best to distribute the funds raised from the Jog-a-thon throughout the school. Once a consensus has been achieved and voted on, the “Ways and Means” committee will present the recommendations to the general PTO during the November 8th meeting. Another vote will take place at the November meeting to allocate the funds to the various areas of the school.

Be sure to check out the Scholastic Book Fair during the week of November 1st-5th. The Book Fair provides a wonderful opportunity to purchase gifts for the holidays as well as books for your child’s classroom.

The PTO will be sponsoring the Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 6th. If you are interested in renting a booth you can find the application on the McCornack website, the front office or your child’s “Friday Folder.”

This year’s Holiday Sing will be held on Tuesday, December 14th, at 7:00pm in the gym. Come enjoy a fun family evening singing carols and concluding with some tasty treats!

N o t e s

Welcome to the new school year and to music at McCornack. Throughout the year I will be giving you updates and information on everything from what your child is doing in music class, choir, the musical or other information.

The news is full of stories about what students are not receiving in school this year. Let me tell you what we will be doing. Students will receive 30 minutes of music instruction a week. During that time students will explore rhythm, notation, form, style, instruments of the orchestra, mallet technique for Orff instruments and the recorder. But most of all, they will be learning to use their singing voice. Students will practice good posture, breath control, diction, vowels and singing in tune.

In addition to classroom music, choir is offered from September through December to all third through fifth grade students. We have been invited to sing with the music department of Churchill High School on December 16th. The program is called “Jingle Jazz.” It was such an honor to sing with the Downey Street Singers last year, so we are looking forward to doing it again. Choir permission slips will go home the week of September 23rd and choir will begin on September 30th. To join choir, students need to return a signed parent permission slip and attend rehearsals. A rehearsal schedule will be included with the parent permission slip.

Tryouts for the fifth grade musical will be held in December. “The Wizard of Oz” will be presented in May. More information will follow, as audition time gets closer.

Special care needs to be taken to insure that music remains a core curriculum in our school. If you are interested in being part of a music booster program for choir or would like to help with the weekly rehearsals, please contact Jeanette Engel at engel_j@4j.lane.edu. The choir also needs an accompanist and adult help during rehearsal.

Girl Scouts Beautify McCornack! 2nd and 3rd grade Brownies and Girl Scouts from McCornack spent a September afternoon creating a beautiful oasis in our back playground area. The girls and their parents planted bulbs, a tree and assorted plants that we will all be able to enjoy for years to come.

The money for this project was raised by selling Girl Scout cookies. How lucky we are to have such caring students and adults in our school!

4J TAG Parent Meetings Scheduled

Please join us for a time of learning and sharing around issues related to being a parent of a gifted student. Paula Wilkes of Pacific University Center for Talented and Gifted will be offering two separate meetings during the month of October.

The first will be from 8:30-10:30am on Wednesday, October 13th, in the Mozart Room at the Eugene School District Office on 200 N. Monroe. The second will be from 7:00-8:30pm on Tuesday, October 26th, at Kalapuya High School at 1200 N. Terry in Eugene. SafeSchoolsEugene School District 4J Parents

Eugene School District has elected to use the SafeSchools online safety training program to train professional staff, support staff, and even district parents on school-related safety issues. SafeSchools offers trainings in all facets of school safety issues, and its compliance management system tracks all the training for the district, allowing us to easily demonstrate state and federal compliance with safety mandates. SafeSchools courses have been authored by nationally renowned experts, and has been endorsed by a number of school boards and superintendent associations nationwide.

As required by House Bill 2062, Eugene School District is required to make available to parents and legal guardians of District students training each school year on the prevention and identification of child abuse and sexual conduct. As a district parent, you now have this training availability.

As a district parent, you will need to register yourself to the system in order to take your optional trainings. There are two ways to do this. Use your registration key: fb73482b. Go to Eugene’s SafeSchools homepage, http://4j.or.safeschools.com and click “Register” (below the “Login” button). On the next screen you will be prompted to enter the registration key above. Next you will be prompted to enter some basic information, including a username of your choice, which you will use to login to the system moving forward.

Use the “quick link” registration URL: http://4j.or.safeschools.com/register/fb73482b. Enter the address above to your internet browser, and you will be directly taken to the registration page where you will enter your basic information, including your username.

Once you login to the site, you will see a list of courses assigned to you and the date on which they are due. To begin a course, click on the title then follow the prompts. To earn a certificate of completion, you must complete all sections of a course and pass the quiz. You do not have to take SafeSchools courses in one sitting, however; if you are called away, the system will remember where you left off and allow you to pick up again at that point.

Have you heard your child say any of these words? As a School Wide Title I program, McCornack Elementary School receives additional federal financial resources. With these resources, three full time Instructional Assistants, one certified teacher and a few hours of other Instructional Assistants’ time is assigned to help our students make academic progress.

As a school wide program, we have the luxury of offering assistance to any child needing a little extra help, rather than only serving students meeting a stricter criteria. Because we are federally funded, our testing scores and records of instruction are scrutinized not only in our district and state, but also at the federal level. A child receiving additional instruction as a Title I student, is monitored and documented on a two to four week cycle. So, if your child uses any of the above vocabulary in everyday conversation, know that he or she is in good company, and is aware of his/her instruction and progress throughout the year.

To find out more about McCornack Elementary School’s Title I program, plan on attending the October 4th Latino Parent Leaders Meeting or the PTO Meeting. A short Title I presentation will be on both agendas.

The Shedd Institute Programs for Children

The Shedd Institute has a full line-up of exciting programs during the 2010-11 school year for K-5 students. The Magical Moombah!, a musical vaudeville for elementary kids, is now in its 8th season! The 2010-11 shows, which run Saturdays 10:00-11:00am and 1:00-2:00pm, are “Good Golly, Miss Molly!” (November 6), “Rumbles’ Time Machine” (February 5), “Mr. Bubble, Cowhand!” (March 5), and “Gloria in Paris” (April 30). Save the dates for this great, family-friendly activity!

At The Shedd Institute’s community music school, students of any age and ability are encouraged to experiment with different instruments, in-structors, and musical styles! Lessons enroll year-round! Traffic Skills for FamiliesSaturday, October 2, 10:00am - 1:00pm

Monroe Middle School, 2800 Bailey Lane

Class attendees will not only learn about basic traffic skills in this three hour course but also learn how to perform a bicycle safety check, properly fit a helmet, size a bicycle for a child and properly carry things on a bicycle. Information will also be provided about gear and clothing, use of lights and locking a bike. The majority of the course will be conducted indoors but the last portion will be held in the parking lot where drills and a final ride on neighborhood streets will be conducted.

This class is made for parents AND kids so all participants are asked to bring a bicycle and a helmet with them to class. Some reduced cost helmets will be available. Anyone requiring a loaner bicycle for the class is asked to state that in the comments section of the registration form. This class is geared towards children ages 5 – 13 and is free and open to all families but registration is required: http://eugenesrts.org/events/streetskillsforfamilies. Light snacks will be provided.

Have you seen the Gingerbread Man? McCornack kindergartners always enjoy their annual trek through the school, trying to find that wily Gingerbread Man.

This year he was captured in Ms. Katusda’s office!

Fire Safety Kindergartners began their year learning about fire safety. Each year the firemen from the Churchill station bring over equipment and share interesting stories about their job.

Counselor’s Corner

Welcome back to a new year at McCornack! As your school counselor, I provide programs and services to help students develop their personal, emotional and social lives. I work with students, parents, school adults and members of the community to help students develop:

· Skills in communicating, cooperating and resolving conflict· Positive behaviors that create good physical and mental health· Good decision making skills· Enhanced personal responsibility· The ability to self-monitor behaviors· An awareness of and appreciation for America’s cultural diversity

Here are a few of the programs I will be providing this year:

Attendance Club: The A+ Attendance Award is a beautiful trophy given to the homeroom class that has the best attendance for the week with the most students in their classroom at the start of the day. I also work with individual students and their families who have a hard time coming to school on time. All students appreciate being recognized for doing something right. The A+ Attendance Program does that when students work hard to come to

school on time every day.

Small Social Skills Groups: I offer small social skills groups once per week for 30 minutes a week. In these groups we pay attention to: listening, being organized, managing time well, understanding emotions, knowing how to make friends, how to resolve conflict, completing class assignments and homework, and maintaining a good attitude. These skills might come naturally to some of us but for most of us, we need to learn and practice these skills. Likewise, we adults get to encourage and promote the great social skills that our students practice! In our small group, we will be learning, practicing and strengthening such skills.

Whole Class Guidance: Studies show that whole class guidance (in addition to other counseling strategies) is a smart investment to create positive school climate. I will be going into the classrooms to provide guidance lessons focused on positive choice making, empowerment, how to be a friend, and how to advocate for yourself and others, how to resolve conflict, among other topics.

Check In Check Out: This program has proven effective for many students who need additional positive adult attention in order to perform as safely, respectfully and responsibly as elementary school students can. School staff works together with students and parents/guardians to help the student maintain positive behavior. Studies have shown that CICO helps boost students’ sense of self, academics and sense of community.

How to see the counselor: Any child, family member, teacher or community member can make an appointment to talk with me about things that are on their mind. I have a request form on my office door; it is available for anyone who needs it!

Confidentiality: I maintain a confidential office, which means that what we talk about in my office stays in the office unless I believe that (a) someone may hurt or harm the child, (b) the child may hurt or harm themselves or another person or (c) a judge states I must share what was discussed in my office.

El Grupo de Padres de Familia de McCornack es una parte vital para la escuela de su hijo. Es muy importante para el éxito de su hijo que usted participe y este activo en su educación. El PTO es el mejor lugar para empezar!

La función del PTO en McCornack es de asociar a las familias con el personal de la escuela para hacer que McCor-nack sea la mejor escuela primaria que puede ser. PTO ayuda a organizar la ayuda de voluntarios en los salones, a recaudar

Una vez que el consenso se ha alcanzado y votado, el comité “Ways and Means” presentará las recomendaciones al grupo de padres general durante la reunión del 08 de noviembre. Otra votación tendrá lugar en esa reunión en noviembre para saber como asignar los fondos a las distintas áreas de la escuela.

La Cantata Navideña se celebrará el martes 14 de diciembre a las 7:00 pm en el gimnasio. Venga a disfrutar de una noche familiar cantando y celebrando las fiestas. Terminaremos la noche con algunos postres!

4J reuniones programadas TAG Padres

Por favor, únase a nosotros para compartir un momento de aprendizaje y de intercambio en torno a cuestiones relacionadas de como ser padres de estudiantes superdotados. Paula Wilkes de la Universidad del Pacífico y del Centro de Talentosos y Dotados estará ofreciendo dos reuniones por separado durante el mes de octubre. La primera será de 8:30-10:30 am el miércoles, 13 de octubre en la Sala Mozart en la oficina del Distrito Escolar de Eugene en 200 N. Monroe. La segunda será de 7-8:30 pm el martes, 26 de octubre en Kalapuya High School en 1200 N. Terry en Eugene. Bienvenidos al nuevo año escolar y música en McCornack. A lo largo del año se dara información sobre las actualizaciones y todo, lo que su hijo está haciendo en la clase de música, el coro, o información musical decualqui-er otro tipo.

Las noticias son historias más que nada sobre lo que los estudiantes no están recibiendo en la escuela este año. Déjame decirle lo que vamos a estar haciendo.

Los estudiantes reciben 30 minutos de instrucción de música a la semana. Durante ese tiempo los estudiantes explorarán el ritmo, la notación, forma, estilo, los instrumentos de la orquesta, la técnica de instrumentos Orff y la grabadora. Pero, sobre todo, estarán aprendiendo a utilizar su voz para can-tar. Los estudiantes practicarán una buena postura, control de la respiración, la dicción, las vocales y cantando a tono.

Además de clases de música en el salón de clases, también el coro se of-rece de septiembre a diciembre a todos los estudiantes de tercer grado y 5to grado. Hemos sido invitados para cantar con el departamento de música de Churchill High School el 16 de diciembre. El programa se llama “Jazz Jingle”. Fue un gran honor cantar con los cantantes de Calle Downey el año pasado, así que estamos deseando hacerlo de nuevo. Los permisos para el Coro se irán a casa la semana del 23 de septiembre y el coro se iniciará el 30 de septiembre. Para participar en el coro, los estudiantes necesitan devolver una hoja de permiso firmada por los padres y asistir a los ensayos. El horario de ensayos se incluirá con la hoja de permiso de los padres.

Pruebas para el musical de quinto grado se llevaran acabo en diciembre. La obra “El mago de Oz” se presentará en mayo. Habrá más información, segun se acerce el tiempo de audiciónes.

Debemos tener especial cuidado en asegurarnos que la música sigua siendo un plan de estudios básico importante en nuestra escuela. ¿Ha oído hablar a su hijo o decir cualquiera de estas palabras? Como programa para toda nuestra escuela llamado ( Título I), la escuela McCornack recibe recursos adicionales federales y financieros. Con estos recursos, tres asistentes de instrucción de tiempo completo, un maestro certificado y otro par de asistentes de medio tiempo “se asignan para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes para un mejor progreso académico.

Como un programa para toda la escuela, tenemos el lujo de ofrecer asistencia adicional a cualquier niño que necesita un poco de extra ayuda, y no sólo servir a los estudiantes que reunen criterios más estrictos. Debido a que estos programas son financiados con fondos federales, nuestros resultados en los examenes y los registros de instrucción se examinan no sólo en nuestro distrito y estado, sino también a nivel federal. Un niño que recibe instrucción adicional como estudiante del Título I, se supervisa y se documenta en un ciclo de dos a cuatro semanas. Por lo tanto, si su hijo usa cualquiera de este vocabulario de arriba en su conversación diaria, sabemos que él o ella está en buena compañía, y esta consciente de su instrucción y su progreso durante todo el año.

El Instituto Shedd para Los Niños

El Instituto Shedd tiene una línea completa de fantásticos programas durante el año escolar 2010-11 para estudiantes de Kinder hasta 5to. grado. El Moombah Mágico!-Un vodevil musical para niños de primaria, esta ahora en su octava temporada! Los shows del 2010-11, serán los sábados 10-11 am y 1-2 pm. serán Good Golly, Miss Molly! (06 de noviembre), retumba “Time Machine (05 de febrero), e vaquero Sr. Bubble! (05 de marzo), y Glo-ria en París (30 de abril). Anote las fechas para esta gran actividad, familiar!

Monroe Middle School, 2800 Bailey Lane

Los asistentes a esta clase no sólo aprenderán las habilidades básicas sobre el tráfico en este curso de tres horas, sino también aprenderan a como realizar una inspección de seguridad de bicicletas,como usar un casco en forma correcta, el tamaño de una bicicleta para un niño, y como cargar cosas correctamente en una bicicleta. La información también hablara sobre el equipo y prendas de vestir, el uso de las luces, y como echarle llave a una bicicleta. La mayor parte del curso se llevará a cabo en el interior del edificio , pero la última parte se llevará a cabo en el estacionamiento donde haremos los ejercicios y daremos una última vuelta por las calles del barrio.

Esta clase es para los padres y niños. Se les pide todos los participantes que traigan una bicicleta y un casco con ellos a clase. Algunos cascos a costo reducido estarán disponibles. Cualquier persona que requiera un préstamo de bicicletas para la clase se le pide que lo escriba en la sección de comentarios del formulario de inscripción. Bienvenidos a un nuevo año en McCornack! Como su consejero de la escuela, proveere programas y servicios para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar su vida personal, emocional y social. Trabajare con los estudiantes, los padres, los adultos de la escuela, y miembros de la comunidad para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar:

• Habilidades en comunicación, cooperación, y como resolver conflictos;• Comportamientos positivos que crean una buena salud física y mental• Buenas habilidades para tomar decisiones,• Aumento en la responsabilidad personal

• La capacidad y conducta de auto-control;• El conocimiento y aprecio de la diversidad cultural en los Estados Unidos

Éstos son algunos de los programas que proporcionaré este año:

Club de Asistencia: El Premio de buena asistencia es un trofeo muy bonito que se da a la clase que tenga la mejor asistencia durante la semana con la mayoría de los estudiantes en sus salones al inicio del día. También trabajare con los estudiantes y sus familias que tienen dificultades en llegar a la escuela a tiempo. Todos los estudiantes agradecen un reconocimiento cuando hacen algo bien. El Programa de Asistencia ayuda a que los estudiantes trabajen más duro para poder estar en la escuela a tiempo todos los días.

Grupos Pequeños de Habilidades Sociales: Ofrezco grupos pequeños de habilidades sociales una vez por semana durante 30 minutos. En estos grupos se presta atención en: Escucharlos, aprender a como ser organizado, hacer major uso de su tiempo, comprender sus emociones personales, aprender a cómo hacer amigos, cómo resolver conflictos en clase y como completar las tareas, pero también como mantener una buena actitud. Estas habilidades pueden venir naturalmente en algunos de nosotros, pero para la mayoría tenemos que aprenderlo y ponerlo en práctica. Asi mismo, nosostros los adultos debemos ayudar a estimular y fomentar las habilidades sociales que estan prácticando nuestros estudiantes! En estos grupos, vamos aprendender, practicas y como fortalecer estas habilidades.

Orientación de clases: Los estudios muestran que la orientación de clases (además de otras estrategias de orientación) es una inversión inteligente para crear un clima escolar positivo. Voy a visitar salones para proveer lecciones de orientación enfocados en como escojer cosas más positivas, de autoridad y fuerza, cómo ser un buen amigo, cómo abogar por sí mismo y cómo resolver conflictos, entre otros temas.

Entrada por Salida: Este programa es muy efectivo para muchos estudiantes que necesitan más atención positiva de los adultos para llevar a cabo con la mayor seguridad, respeto y responsabilidad possible sus funciones en la escuela. El personal escolar trabaja con los estudiantes y los padres / tutores para ayudar a que el estudiante pueda mantener un comportamiento positivo. Muchos estudios han demostrado que este programa( CICO ) ayuda a mejorar su sentido academico y de la comunidad.

Cómo poder ver al consejero: Cualquier niño, cualquier miembro de su familia, maestro o miembro de la comunidad puede hacer una cita para verme y platicar conmigo acerca de cosas que están en su mente que les preocupa. Tengo una forma para llenar en la puerta de mi oficina, que está disponible para cualquiera que la necesite!

Boletín Escolar Vendra Cada Tres Meses!

Este boletín de la escuela vendra ahora 4 veces al año. La copia de invierno se irá a casa en las mochilas de sus hijos en enero, la copia de primavera se irá a casa en abril y nuestra ultima copia será en junio. Con el fin de ahorrar dinero y tener en cuenta nuestro medio ambiente, la copias seran enviadas vía electrónica a todos las familias que nos han dado sus direcciones de correo electrónico, el resto recibiran copias en papel.
