From the desk of the General Manager and Leadership Team …Hello again and welcome to this edition of the Tattler.

In the latest industry news, the Government has released a report compiled by the University of Wollongong on Alternative Aged Care Assessment, Classifi cation System and Funding Model. The report has handed down recommendations for the future of the aged care sector with the aim to ensure fi nancial sustainability in light of substantial growth in government expenditure. It’s not expected that the government will make a quick decision on the recommendations and not without undergoing a thorough consultation process with the industry. All aged care providers but in particular Not for Profi ts such as us are looking for consistency in funding so we can plan and provide care and services our residents deserve. We will keep you informed as this funding review progresses.

Beauaraba Living is also looking at ways to reduce costs and improve effi ciencies and services. To do this we are establishing an Alliance with other stand-alone aged care facilities. The aim of the alliance is to assess and implement cost saving initiatives and effi ciencies to benefi t us as a collective. While it is early days we are all excited about the potential of this alliance.

Our Chairman, Ann Garland and I attended the Leading Age Services Australia Queensland conference in March. It is an opportunity to meet with our peers and fi nd out the latest changes and innovations occurring in the industry. There is nothing more consistent as change and the Aged Care industry is no exception to this. There were many presentations focussing on technology in aged care as well as the challenges we will be facing into the future. On a high note, we won the Excellence in Care Award for an Organisation It was a real honour for Ann and I to accept this award on behalf of the Board and all the staff who do such an excellent job caring for the residents. Ann will tell you more about the award in her report.

On writing this report, we have just commemorated another ANZAC Day. Our service here at Beauaraba Living was very well attended and we received great feedback from attendees. Thank you to the staff who do an exceptional job to ensure our residents, friends and families are able to honour those men and women who have fallen in the service of our country. It is encouraging to see the increasing attendance and support across the generations for this profound legacy, whether it be small country services through to overseas celebrations.

Thanks to recent activities of the Foundation, they have enabled us to give the buildings fronting Weale Street a face lift. The exterior colours are now more in keeping with the colours of the new buildings, providing an attractive entrance to our facility and to the Medical Centre. There are more projects and activities in the pipeline for the Foundation including the Annual Golf Day coming up. Look for Ros’ report inside this edition.

Until next time …….

Alex, Janet, Adrienne, Kim & Kate

Lifestyle report

A big welcome to May, as our weather starts to cool down. Everyone has been commenting on the cooler nights and mornings, so it might be time to check through your cupboard and make sure you have enough winter woollies.

Congratulations to all our artistic Residents who won prizes in the Pittsworth Show. Also a huge ‘Thank you’ to all those who Volunteered on the day to make their visit to the Show grounds, to celebrate 110 years of the Pittsworth Show, so enjoyable and memorable for our Residents.

In April Mother’s Union visited again – We had a wonderful morning tea with the Ladies from Mother’s Union. We shared lots of chatter, laughter and reminiscing, with a huge variety of delicious food. This was followed by the Anglican Church Service. A big thankyou to the Residents who assisted to decorate the room, with lace table cloths and fresh fl owers.

On the 20th, Residents headed off to Morning Melodies and enjoyed ‘Beggers Sing from the Heart’. A wonderful morning was had by all in attendance. Our residents really enjoyed the trip in the buses to the empire theatre, a lovely morning tea was supplied and a great show by the Beggers.

Once again this year, Beauaraba Living hosted a moving Anzac Day Service, for those who are unable to attend the Service down the street. As usual this was well attended, and appreciated by Residents.

This month, we say ‘Happy Holidays’ to Zara who is heading off on a 6 month caravanning tour. Zara assures us she will be back with lots of stories to tell, on her

return.

Congratulations to our talented Choir, who provided the entertainment for Friendship Concert on the 13th April. It was lovely to see so many family members there to support and enjoy our Choir. They will be having a couple of month’s break, before resuming again.

Lifestyle report

In May Cater Care are hosting a Mother’s Day Luncheon. Then in June, they host a Spanish Cuisine Major Theme Day, which sounds very interesting!! June also sees another Morning Melodies ‘Back to the Tivoli’, and will no doubt be very popular with Residents also.

Don’t forget, State of Origin is starting soon, with the fi rst game on the 31st May, next on 21st June, and the fi nal on 12th July.

Just a reminder, for those Lodge Residents wishing to play Indoor Bowls, please ensure you head down early to see Paula to have your nails attended. Other Residents who do not play, have agreed to have their nails done later to allow you to go through fi rst. Paula is a very busy lady, and can only accommodate Lodge Residents in her allocated time. Thanking you for your consideration.

Stay well & stay engaged,

From the Lifestyle Team

Auxiliary & Op Shop Report

Op Shop Report.Wow what a quarter and haven’t we been busy. We have had a very successful summer sale which meant we didn’t have to pack too many clothes away. Our winter clothes are now in stock and new items will be added to the current stock daily. We have purchased a lot more shelving to display our bric- a-brac on and are in the process of buying a lockable cabinet. Our books and stationery have been shifted to the back of the shop, new lighting about to be installed in this area. The shoes are now displayed at the rear of the shop. We are trying to improve our shop all the time and it is lovely to hear feedback as to how good the shop looks. HOWEVER we wouldn’t be able to do this without our VOLUNTEERS. The committee

Board NewsBOARD REPORTSince being elected Board Chair in January I have had the opportunity to meet with members of the Auxiliary, the Foundation and Care Pittsworth. I would like to thank them for their ongoing support for Beauaraba Living as their contributions and hard work mean that Beauaraba Living can continue to be the outstanding facility it is. I would also like to acknowledge the support the Board members have given me in my new role as Chairperson. In April I will be attending a Resident’s Forum meeting and I am looking forward to meeting with the residents as Board Chair.I attended the Leading Aged Care Services (LASA) Conference in March. This was a state wide conference and provided a wonderful opportunity for me to network and meet other Chairs and CEOs. This provided me with a further insight into the aged care industry as well as changes to the industry such as consumer directed care. It was a great honour for Beauaraba Living to win an “Excellence in Care Award for Organisation” at the Conference. The Award was received in recognition of the “Living Life” programme for care to the residents of Beauaraba Living. This Award was particularly outstanding as it is recognition by peers in the Aged Care Industry. It was a great privilege for me together with Alex to accept the award on behalf of the Beauaraba Living team. It was unfortunate that Janet, Kim and Adrienne were unable to be there because of weather caused by the cyclone. I would like to thank the wonderful staff who care for our residents who deserve this acknowledgement of the care they give. Board members have met with Pat Weir State Member for Condamine and John McVeigh Federal Member for Groom as well as attending a Cater Care function which was an opportunity to meet with Cater Care Management. Two Board members attended a workshop to set up an Alliance with aged care facilities in Clifton, Millmerran and Goondiwindi. Once again thank you for all the support and good wishes I have received.Until next time Ann Garland Board Chair

Palliative Care Week

In remembrance of Residents of Beauaraba Living who have passed away, we invite relatives and friends to our Service of Refl ection to be held on Wednesday 24th May, 2017 from 0930-1000. The service will be conducted in Kincora and will be an opportunity to share memories of your loved one, if you so wish.

Following a short refl ection by Charlie Uebergang (pastoral care worker), we

will be releasing helium balloons. This year we have chosen to hold the service during National Palliative Care Week.

Beauaraba Living is committed to providing palliative care services to the community whenever possible. The addition of the Palliative Care suite, through the wonderful support of Care Pittsworth has enhanced the facilities available at Beauaraba Living.

Residents Forum

Catering: Minimal Issues with catering at present.Wellness Centre: Several Residents are making daily use of the exercise bikes. Residents reminded to make an appointment with Physio who will show you how to operate exercise equipment. Choir: Choir is looking forward to their fi rst concert on 13th April. Choir is having a month off after concert to give everyone a break. Everyone agreed. Bus Outings: We are now running a bus to Happy Wanderers each Monday. All agreed the extra bus trips are good. The feedback

is so positive from Residents, that we have scheduled another visit this month. David asked that if anyone has some ideas of where they would like to go on outings, to please let him know. Environment: Several comments on the chair trialled in Lodge Dining Room is noisy when being moved. Janet advises that only a couple of the chairs have been benefi cial, but the chairs can be purchased in future as required.Ice Cream parlour: Residents feel the trial of offering either an ice cream or an icy pole was successful, and wish to put this in place permanently. Show Entries: A number of Residents took out prizes for their show entries. Residents report they had a great trip to the show on Friday afternoon. They were well taken care of, being supplies with cups of tea, afternoon tea followed by an ice cream. Another highlight was when Residents were introduced to Angus Lane and had photos taken with him. Janet reported that Angus mentioned the visit from Beauaraba Living Residents the next day over the loud speaker. Lifestyle: After much discussion, no one was able to come up with other ideas for bingo prizes to get around dietary requirements. This was discussed and it was decided to trial 2 weekends without prizes. One Resident asked if more photos can be taken on outings so those who are unable to attend can look at photos. Lifestyle agreed to

They would like to see this continue. Afternoon Tea with Board: A warm welcome was extended to outgoing Board Chair Ken Stallman and New Board Chair Ann Garland. After afternoon tea, thank you letter was presented to Ken. Ken humbly accepted the letter. Ken reminisced his years and stated it has been the most rewarding job he has ever done.
