Welcome to the Mayflower Society House Auction

On behalf of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD), I thank those of you who have taken an interest in collecting items from our beautiful historic house.

The Mayflower Society House was built in 1754 by a descendant of Mayflower passenger Edward Winslow, and purchased in 1941 by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. In 1950, Governor General Walter Merriam Pratt asked members and anyone interested in preserving the house to contribute 18th century items of furniture, wearing apparel, books, or other items of the period. Through donations of members, estates, friends of the Society, and through purchases, the entire house was furnished in a style indicative of an 18th century house.

In 1951, an endowment was established for the upkeep of the house and through the years, members have continued to graciously give through donations and bequests, bringing the endowment to a level where the maintenance of the house can continue.

The sale of some of the interior furnishings, on display through the years, will aid the Society in developing and implementing plans for preserving the historic house. Future plans will make the Mayflower Society House more accessible and functional for both Society members and the Plymouth community.

The General Society of Mayflower Descendants undertakes the maintenance and repair of the house with pride and invites all who become owners of some of its historic contents to visit and tour the house. The words of former Governor General Walter Merriam Pratt in 1950 still resonate today. “...It is a house of great beauty and dignity, with history and atmosphere, perfectly located on North Street, one of five streets laid out by the Pilgrims, overlooking Plymouth Rock and Cole’s Hill...” It will continue to be open for tours between May and October. 6. Silk Embroidered Memorial, Dated 1812Large mourning piece with highly detailed stitched and painted design elements. Foreground depicts three figures clad in mourning clothing surrounding an urn mounted on plinth with printed inset verse, which reads: “ IN MEMORY OF DANIEL KUHN who died Oct. 23d. 1810. AEt. 7 years, Enough to nature and to grief is paid, Indulge no more these unavailing tears; Not all your conforts in the grave are laid, thro’ grief’s dark shade a lucid ray appears. Cleans’d in the Saviors blood from every stain, Think with what transport you will meet above; Forever free from sin, and grief, and pain, the dear departed object of your love.” Background having landscape with trees, foliage and distant mountains. Company Orders to Alpheus Brett signed by Captain Oliver Jackson naming twenty-one men to appear for “military discipline, muster and inspection, and view of arms”.

Forty-three page document of entries dating 1786-1789, titled “Role of the Company Commanded by the Honble (sp) Thomas Cushing Esq”. Entry on Nov. 21, 1785 announces Major William Perkins to the command of the garrison.

Booklet comprised of thirty pages titled, “Castle Island of June 7th 1786 Orderly Book”, detailing court martials that took place on Castle Island from 1785-1788. The latter half of the booklet becomes a record of accounts with entries dating from 1816-1818. $1000-$2000

Carries faded tag which reads: “This arrow was presented to me by my cousin Francis Parkman in his house in Jamaica Plain a year or two before his death. It is the one of which he speaks in “The Oregon Trail” as having been shot into a buffalo up to the feathers by the Sioux chief Panther, who pulled it out and gave it to Mr. Parkman. PROVENANCE: This arrow has accompanying family provenance from the consignor who is a descendant of Massachusetts historian and author Francis Parkman Jr. Parkman set out to study the Plains Indians after graduating from Harvard in 1846. His guide, trapper Henry Chatillon, was married to the daughter of a Sioux Chief and persuaded his father-in-law to allow Parkman to accompany them on their hunts for the summer alongside prominent Sioux warriors Panther and Big Crow (Kongra-Tonga). It was presented to Parkman, upon his request, as proof “of the force and dexterity with which the Indians discharge their arrows”, as described in chapter XV of his book, “The Oregon Trail”, published in 1849. $3000-$6000

There are no warranties, expressed or implied, with regard to age, condition, quality, functionality, value, rarity or provenance of the property offered for sale by J. James Auctioneers & Appraisers or any representative thereof. All valuations are considered estimates, and in no way constitutes a warranty or guarantee of any kind. It is the responsibility of the buyer to fully examine the property prior to placing a bid and judging the item(s) for his or her own protection.

The auctioneer reserves the right to reject opening bids that are deemed “too low” (far below the reasonable estimated value of the property) and may withdraw lots from the sale at his discretion.

PAYMENTPayment is due in full at the end of the sale. Internet buyers must remit payment to J. James Auctioneers & Appraisers within (7) SEVEN days. We will not release lots for shipment until funds have cleared our financial institution. J. James Auctioneers & Appraisers will open a dispute with Invaluable/AuctionZip, and negative feedback will be left for Internet buyers that do not pay for purchases within (7) SEVEN days.

Successful buyers may pay for purchases with cash, check, or wire transfer. A copy of your photo I.D. must accompany all checks. Returned checks are subject to an additional $35.00 bank fee.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IS CURRENT. A member of our staff will contact Internet bidders within 72-hours of the auction to arrange for payment of your purchases with the contact information provided to us by Invaluable or AuctionZip.

SHIPPINGJ. James Auctioneers & Appraisers IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SHIPMENT ARRANGEMENTS. We are happy to recommend a local shipper that will pick up items, package and ship them for our buyers, at their own expense. J. James Auctioneers & Appraisers shall not be held responsible for any acts, omissions or damage caused by the shipping company or during transport of purchases.

Items that have not been picked up or shipped within 14-days will incur a $5.00 per day storage fee. Paid items that are left unclaimed after 30-days shall become the property of J. James Auctioneers & Appraisers.
