December 8 & 9, 2018 - SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT - Year C Issue Number 821 THE SEASON OF ADVENT The Massabielle The Weekly Newsletter of St Bernadette’s Parish Community, Castle Hill, NSW 2154 Hello Everyone. It seems like yesterday when we started this year of 2018, and here we are now, welcoming the holy season of Advent one more time. Getting ready for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus and then the New Year 2019 will be coming soon. In this season of Advent our eyes are fixed on the contemplation of the Son of God who became flesh to live among us. In this contemplation, the liturgy will invite us also to contemplate His blessed Mother as the example for all of the faithful disciple who welcome the Divine Word of God in complete trust. Just yesterday we celebrated the Immaculate Conception of Mary and on this coming Wednesday the Church will invite us to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I thought it would be a good article to write about this miraculous image. Last year I shared with you the oldest narratives of the apparitions. What many people do not know is that the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, for native Mexicans living before the arrival of the Spanish, is also an important codex that speaks to them and also to everyone who comes to study the meanings behind the image. What for many of us is mainly different details on a very unique and complex image of Mary, for the people in ancient Mexico is an image that presents the identity of God and of his blessed Mother. Many people have asked me how big the original image at the basilica is. Studies done to the image tell us that the height is 170 cm (67 in), and width 105 cm (41 in) HER FACE Our Blessed Mothers face is bowed down, looking at everyone tenderly and with compassion. She is gazing slightly to one side as a sign of reverence and respect as native Indians considered it improper to look directly at anyones face. She comes with humility although other symbols in the image show her importance. The face of Our Lady is that of a young girl who is considered mestizo, meaning a blend of races – in this case, Aztec and Spanish. This was the term used by the Spaniards to identify the children of Spanish conquistadores and Aztec women. The portrayal of the Blessed Virgin Mary on her Image as mestizo symbolized the birth of a new race. In a time when Mexicans struggled with their identity and many were judged by the colour of their skin, Mary of Guadalupe shows that she is the face of everyone. The gentle lips are made not by any traces of paint but by the knot in the structure of the tilma. SUNS RAYS The rays give the sacred image an aura of light. They appear as though they are emitted from her, based on the direction of the arrows and the wavy pattern – indicating that shes giving birth to the sun. Since the Aztecs worshipped the sun as the god that gives them life, the image portrays the Virgin Mary as giving birth to god. This is further reinforced by the four-petalled flower on Our Ladys womb as described below. The Aztecs called their sun god Huitzilopochtli (their god of war, too) and to appease him, they offered palpitating human hearts which they considered to be a symbol of life. The presence of the Sun implies a divine presence for native Mexicans. They saw in the image one of the most powerful deities. That is not the one they saw in the face of Mary. She remains humbled with her face down as a message that she is not the main character in the image. To be concluded.

Today’s Readings

First Reading: Baruch 5:1-9

Jerusalem, take off your dress of sorrow and distress, put on the beauty of the glory of God for ever, wrap the cloak of the integrity of God around you, put the diadem of the glory of the Eternal on your head: since God means to show your splendour to every nation under heaven, since the name God gives you for ever will be, ‘Peace through integrity, and honour through devotedness’. Arise, Jerusalem, stand on the heights and turn your eyes to the east:

see your sons reassembled from west and east at the command of the Holy One, jubilant that God has remembered them. Though they left you on foot, with enemies for an escort, now God brings them back to you like royal princes carried back in glory. For God has decreed the flattening of each high mountain, of the everlasting hills, the filling of the valleys to make the ground level so that Israel can walk in safety under the glory of God. And the forests and every fragrant tree will provide shade for Israel at the command of God; for God will guide Israel in joy by the light of his glory with his mercy and integrity for escort.

Second Reading: 1 Philippians 1:4-6,8-11

Every time I pray for all of you, I pray with joy, remembering how you have helped to spread the Good News from the day you first heard it right up to the present. I am quite certain that the One who began this good work in you will see that it is finished when the Day of Christ Jesus comes. God knows how much I miss you all, loving you as Christ Jesus loves you. My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your perception so that you can always recognise what is best. This will help you to become pure and blameless, and prepare you for the Day of Christ, when you will reach the perfect goodness which Jesus Christ produces in us for the glory and praise of God.

Gospel: Luke 3:1-6

In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar’s reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the lands of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went through the whole Jordan district proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness; Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley will be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, winding ways will be straightened and rough roads made smooth. And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.
