Salmon & Walnuts: They’re particularly high in fatty acids, which are central to brain function. “Eating omega-3 fatty acids will promote healthier brain tissue and strengthen and maintain your memory,” says Preston Estep, Ph.D., author of The Mindspan Diet and Director of Gerontology at Harvard Medical School’s Personal Genome Project. Dark leafy greens: “Lettuce, spinach, kale, collards, and other dark leafy greens are especially good sources of vitamin K and other nutrients that have a positive effect on your brain health,” Estep says. Berries, red wine, and chocolate: Your brain requires a huge amount of blood flow to operate, and these foods are all high in polyphenols & other compounds that help improve circulation, Estep says. “That’s why anything good for heart health is also good for your brain.”

to The Masonic Home of Florida on December 23, 2014, and hails from Nitram Lodge No. 188. Ruth resides in Room #364E, and her birthday is October 17th. Ruth is a St. Petersburg native, and she has seven siblings. Her mother passed away when she was three years old. She went to live with her grandmother for two years until her father remarried. Ruth’s father was A.M. King, a fifty year Mason who's second marriage was to Dorothy King, who also used to be a resident of the Masonic Home. Ruth used to come and visit her stepmother here every Sunday for ten years. Ruth grew up around the Haines Road area. She went to grade school at The Harris School on Haines Road. She lived in an a house that used to be an old church. Her father purchased the dilapidated old church and re-built a house for his family with his own hands. In middle school Ruth went to Lealman JHS., and graduated from St. Pete High School with Honors. Her first year of college was at St. Pete Jr. College, then her last three were spent at Florida State University. She graduated in 1947 and began teaching Spanish and English to High school students, She went on to teach elementary students, and did substitute teaching for a while. Then she taught a Government Reading Program called, ESEA. Ruth met her husband, Gene at an ice skating rink. He proposed to her only after one week of courtship! They were married a year later on April 13, 1952, and stayed married for 64 years up until Gene’s passing on July 29, 2016. They had three children; Stanley, Linda and Darlene, who all live in the Tampa Bay area. She has one granddaughter who is expecting a child soon, which will make Ruth a first time great-grandmother! Ruth has been a member of the Central Christian Church for over 58 years. She used to love singing in the Choir and doing volunteer work for her church. She took piano lessons at the Wilkinson’s School of Music for ten years. She would practice in the early morning an hour before breakfast everyday. During her 9th grade year of high school she was invited to play the piano over the Radio Station! Ruth played the song, “Rustle of Spring”, as proud as she could be! Ruth has special memories of her music teacher who always encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone, she support-ed and encouraged her to make a recording demo of her singing and playing the piano over the radio. She raised chickens and grew tomatoes when she was in the 4-H Club, and she had a passion for gardening, and raised orchids. Ruth keeps busy playing a lot of the different games here. She loves to go on shopping trips, attends exercise classes three times a week and is a member of the Songbirds group. She likes putting together jigsaw puzzles, and working on jumble word puzzles. She helps watering the plants, folding the newsletter, and keeping a helpful eye out for her friend, Audrey. Ruth always keeps an smile on her face and a song in her heart. Congratulations on being a great grandmother and have a wonderful year ahead! ~ Maryanne Mello

ONE DAY AT A TIME

One day at a time - this is enough

Do not look back and grieve over the past,

For it is gone; And do not be troubled

about the future, For it has not yet come.

Live in the present, And make it so beautiful

That it will be worth remembering.
