2 MASK OF KAPPA PSI PHARMACEUTICAL FRATERNITY Spring 2008

From the Grand Regent

Brothers of Kappa Psi,

I hope this finds your chapters and Provinces doing well. And I hope you are continuing to make

improvements and other positive changes in your chapter and Province.

Everyone knows that change is inevitable. But the key is not only to make sure that change is for

the better, but to make sure you are driving that change rather than having change thrust upon

you. You will be far more successful if you take the time to identify needed areas of improvement

and then create a plan to address those areas. This reflective process should be a part of the culture

of your chapters, and it all starts with the thought:

“Continuing to improve our chapter so we are better than we were last year is important to us,

and the best way for us to improve our chapter is to set goals and take steps every day to reach

them.”

If your chapter lives by this philosophy, then you can’t help but be your own “agents of change”

and be far more successful than you ever thought. And if the chapter starts getting down on itself or

starts to procrastinate, all you need is one brother to say, “Hey, we all agreed that improving our

chapter and reaching these goals were important to us, so we need to get some work done.”

So where can you start? All you need to do is look at the last chapter progress report form you

submitted to the Central Office. If there are gaps in your report, then start taking steps to fill those

gaps. If you didn’t even fill out a progress report, then your first goal should be to make sure to fill

one out for next year. But set a goal for the number of points you want to have in the end. Maybe

the number is just 10 percent more than last year, or maybe it is 200 percent more than last year. Of

the two, I would go for the 200 percent. Even if you don’t make that goal, you will still end up far

above 10 percent.

And because I want everyone to have a chance at winning Chapter of the Year, I will let you in on

a little secret. If you take the chapter progress report form and plan your year out in advance so that

you can get as many points as possible, I guarantee you will have a much stronger chapter, and will

have a better chance of winning Chapter of the Year than you did last year. If your goals are impor-

tant to you, doesn’t it make sense to work every day to reach them?

Remember that fear, procrastination, self-doubt, and the words “We can’t” or “There is no way

we can” are your enemy. Be fearless. Be positive. And get started now … because it is important.

Kappa Psi for Life …

Fraternally Yours,

Lawrence “LB” BrownGrand Regent 2007–2009

SpringEach year I look forward to the arrival of spring. The flowers, moderate tem-

peratures, rainstorms, thunder, and the smell of freshness and newness in the airall add up to make spring well worth anticipating. With each coming spring, I real-ize that another cycle of life has ended and another cycle is ready to begin.

Spring is the time for resolutions—not the cold dark days of January, but thefresh promising days of spring. You are able to reflect on how your life hasevolved during the last year. Spring is the time you will have the opportunity towork to correct any shortcomings or missed goals or to continue on the path youhave chosen. Spring gives us the opportunity to change.

Spring can bring each of us a new attitude, new plan, renewed energy, moreenthusiasm, and even a fresh outlook. Is there any reason not to like spring?

I bet some of you are even more excited than most. Graduation is just aroundthe corner. A new cycle of life will begin for you that is really exciting. Spring willmark the jumping off point for this new and exciting time of your life—just anoth-er reason to look forward to spring.

Enjoy the spring … it really is a great time of the year.

Fraternally,

Johnny W. Porter

By Grand Historian Kali Jernigan

The brothers of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. madetheir way to Las Vegas, Nevada, December 2–6 for the AmericanSociety of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting. Thebrothers came to the convention for various reasons, including fun, learning, recruiting, and applying for residencies. Many stopped bythe Kappa Psi booth to see old friends and make some new, and wewere visited by brothers from around the world.

The Kappa Psi reception was saved at the last minute by GrandRegent, Brother Lawrence Brown. The Fraternity was not going tohave a reception due to budgetary constraints, but Brother GrandRegent saw how important the reception was to the fellowship we allhold so dear. Brother Grand Regent sent a call out to brothers forhelp and asked seven brothers to join him in donating $500 to fundthe reception. True to Kappa Psi form, brothers responded and themoney was raised in less than 48 hours. There were more than sevenbrothers willing to help, which really showed what it means to beKappa Psi. We should all be proud to be a part of the fantastic broth-erhood that fosters such amazing willingness to help. A specialthanks goes to Brothers Johnny Porter, John Grossomanides, NormCampbell, Eric Gupta, Fletcher Nehring, Lawrence Brown, EdRoche, and Kali Jernigan for their generous contribution.

The reception was held Monday night at the Flamingo’s ScenicBallroom and was a huge success with over 300 brothers in atten-dance. While it wasn’t exactly scenic with no windows in sight, thebest part of the reception was the ability to socialize with our broth-ers. Keep a lookout for Kappa Psi booths and receptions at futureASHP and APhA meetings! Hope to see you all there.

The Theta chapter’s springsemester will be headlined by oureighth annual ALS Association golftournament. Amyotrophic LateralSclerosis (ALS), better known asLou Gehrig’s disease, is a motorneuron disease that leaves patientsin a state of paralysis but fullycoherent to the world around them.Proceeds from the event will bedonated to the ALS Associationwhose mission is “to find a cure forand improve living with ALS.” Weare hosting this event along withthe school’s alumni association andare excited about the buzz thisevent is gathering.

We also had a large contingencyhead up to the Province III springmeeting in Washington, D.C. Thisevent was held at HowardUniversity and was hosted by theDelta Kappa chapter whom wewould like to thank for this greatweekend.

The brothers of Kappa Psi Thetachapter are excited about thisupcoming year, and we look for-ward to all the events we haveplanned for this semester. This semester the Iota chapterhas taken on new initiatives in aneffort to preserve the reputation itupholds within Kappa Psi. Forstarters, our attention has beenfocused on the alumni. We built astrong alumni database by compil-ing a list of names from everypledge class starting in 1979 to thepresent. On top of this, we also

added the names of almost everygraduate dating back to 1965. Asfor those alumni in-town, they haveallowed our brothers to do yardwork and various other jobs, whichhave created a two-pronged benefit. One benefit is a rapport that hasdeveloped between the alumni andcurrent brothers. The other benefitis that it generated funds for ourchapter.

In an attempt to show our dedica-tion to the Brotherhood, we dou-

bled our attendance this year atProvince. Iota was represented byWilliam Shealy, Trey Reeves, SethPulley, Justin Kellett, WilliamGibson, Mitchell Page and JeremyHeller. A special congratulationgoes to our current regent, WilliamShealy, for being nominated as theNational Historian.

On top of everything else thissemester, we have continued to dovolunteer work around our commu-nity. For example, our vice regent,

Andy Neipp, adopted a street in ourdowntown that we are responsiblefor cleaning multiple times a year.We helped a local Girl Scout raisemore than $300 dollars in cookiesales. Brother Chris Dykes headeda group of volunteers who pressurewashed our dean’s house on cam-pus. Finally, on April 1, we will holdour elections for next year. That isall to report from the Iota chapterand, as always, we are dedicated tonot only preserving our legacy, butalso creating novel boundaries.

We had a great time, but Icannot speak for all since one of ourbrothers became sick with food poi-soning as soon as we arrived andwas stuck in the hotel room allweekend. Philanthropy has always beenone of Beta Lambda’s focuses. Thisspring the chapter sought to outdoitself. The brothers have startedvolunteering regularly at a localnursing home. On a couple ofSaturdays each month, brothersand current pledges go to the resi-dency and visit with the seniorswho live there. They spend timewith them during meals and call outBingo numbers. The nursing home

employees take care of all of theday-to-day arrangements, so thebrothers serve a purely social pur-pose and the residents themselvesseem to love it. Additionally, thebrothers are collecting pop tabs todonate to the Ronald McDonaldHouse. The fundraiser involved theentire UT College of Pharmacy andannually raises thousands of poptabs. Finally, the brothers gavemore than their time—they donat-ed blood to the Red Cross. Everydonation saves three lives and, despite a potential fear of needles,is entirely painless.

Beta Xi rushed right into a jam-packed spring semester here atUNC. As soon as we were back toschool, our rush events began. Thissemester we held info sessions anda pizza lunch at the School ofPharmacy to show students whatKappa Psi is all about. We alsospent a fun evening at CharlieGoodnight’s Comedy Club, went toa Carolina Hurricane’s hockeygame, and hosted our annualBlizzard Party which allowed broth-ers time to socialize with therushees. Our last rush event beforeformal rush was a CommunityService and Bingo Night. Weassembled the vials for our Vial ofLife project and then enjoyed anight of Bingo and prizes. As therush came to a close, we gained fivepledges—all with a genuine desireto learn about Kappa Psi.

In the area of community service,we have been more than hard atwork. Adopt-a-Highway and makingdinners at the Ronald McDonaldHouse continue to be two of ourphilanthropy events. Now that ourvials have been completed duringrush, we will be handing them outto the public. A Kappa Psi alumnusfrom a local CVS has given us per-mission to hand them out at hisstore, and we hope the vials willserve as a way to better the healthcare in our community. Our tobac-co cessation program is still ineffect as well. We continue to set uptables on campus to counsel andeducate the students of UNC aboutthe importance of tobacco cessa-tion. We are also planning a bigevent to help students visualize thehealth consequences of smoking insupport of Kick Butts Day on April2. In addition, we have set up aKappa Psi Relay for Life team, andour team goal is to raise $1,000 togo towards cancer research. One ofour biggest community service pro-jects this semester will be our firstannual Food Drive competition weare organizing in the UNC Schoolof Pharmacy. We will be hosting acompetition between the first-yearpharmacy students, second-yearpharmacy students, third-year stu-dents, and the graduate studentorganization. Harris Teeter has

attended the Pharmacy SchoolSemi-Formal where students andfaculty gathered for a night awayfrom studying and teaching. Lastly,Beta Xi has been playing in an intra-mural coed basketball leaguewhere our team made it through tothe third round of the playoffsbefore our season came to a close. We are now preparing for softballseason.

The Beta Xi chapter is lookingforward to attending Province III atHoward University as 21 of ourbrothers will be going up to D.C. tosupport our Beta Xi brothers intheir last meeting as Satrap andHistorian of Province III. It shouldbe a very fun weekend and we hopeto get a lot accomplished with thebrothers of the other Province IIIchapters. We are also looking for-

To thank the brothers for theircontinued guidance and eager foranother opportunity to get to knowthem, the Zeta pledges hosted aChinese New Year themed party onJanuary 22 for the brothers. Afterspending countless hours makingdecorations, food, and thinking upof games to entertain the brotherswith, the pledges created a trulymemorable night that blew away allexpectations. The night was high-lighted by an authentic ChineseLion Dance led by Old ManBrother Stan Chu, reflecting all thehard work the pledges put in forthe brothers.

With rave reviews from theEpsilon pledge class, SpeedPledging made a triumphant returnthis year to help the brothers ofDelta Phi and the Zeta pledge classget to know each other. The broth-ers manned an eclectic mix of sta-tions such as the Inkblot test, ThePepsi Challenge, and The Connect-4Smackdown that the pledges partici-pated in to break the ice beforedrifting into related conversation. The chill of the San Diego wintersaw the Delta Phi brothers and Zetapledge class embracing each othernot only for warmth but to learn theways of Kappa Psi brotherhood. With the conclusion of an excitingrush period last quarter, the broth-ers threw a Hollywood themed pin-ning party on November 29 to con-gratulate the pledges on their firststeps towards becoming a KappaPsi brother. The Zeta pledges andtheir big bros became the celebri-ties of the night walking down thered carpet into the party as special-ly trained Delta Phi security mem-bers struggled to hold back thethrongs of crazed fans andpaparazzi. Throughout the night, movie themed games such as Pinthe Oscar on the Actor, movie triv-ia, charades, and good old-fash-ioned banter on favorite moviesgave the pledges their first taste ofthe pledge process that would leavethem hungering for more.

And more they would have. Withthe New Year still fresh in ourminds, we decided to host a newpledge event, the Interview Party. On the night of January 10, theKappa Psi brothers and Zeta pledgeclass gathered on the familiarground of their first-year classroom. The night began with a game of“Point & Shoot” where brothersand pledges struggled to see whocould name each other the fastestonce the sheets dividing them weredropped.

With everyone in good spiritsafter such a rousing game, thepledges and brothers divided them-selves up into smaller groups andbegan their conversations on ran-domly chosen topics. Over cheek-warming hot cocoa and cookies, thegroups discussed subjects likefavorite things and embarrassingmoments where many of the broth-ers and pledges found unexpectedcommonalities between each other.Their newly found connectionsprompted them to share moreabout themselves and each per-son’s stories fed into the next in awondrously sociable cycle.Towards the end of the night, thepledges were presented their

their five-minute challenges to indi-vidual pledges to wrest stories, tal-ents, and jokes that they might bet-ter understand their future broth-ers.

With so little time and so manypledges and brothers yet to talkwith each other, time at each sta-tion was strictly enforced. At theblow of a whistle every five min-utes, the pledges and brothers bidtheir hasty adieus and grudginglycut involved conversations short tomeet another set of brothers at the

next station. Though limited intime, both the pledges and brotherssavored each minute of interactionwith each other and ended thenight with something special toremember everyone by.

On February 26, the Delta Phibrothers proudly initiated the Zetaclass and celebrated with a night ofkaraoke and bonding at RockBottom. To start the festivities, theZeta class performed a spirited ren-dition of “Milkshake” that had allthe brothers cheering and singing

Chapter Pride. For each chapter it’s different, but it’sthere for everyone. For many chapters, their pride is based intheir strong traditions. The tradition of being the best organiza-tion on campus is a source of pride for many chapters. Foryears your chapter may have always been the one that the col-lege and community turned to when they needed help. The RedCross may call every year to find out when the chapter is hold-ing their annual blood drive, or the dean may knock on the doorfor volunteers for student interviews. Whatever the reason,Kappa Psi has the strong tradition of being the group that getsthings done. As we move forward into the future, it is importantto continue that tradition at all levels of our great Fraternity.

As a chapter, it is your responsibility to ensure that the activi-ties you do to promote fellowship, industry, sobriety, and highideals are continued for the next generation of brothers. Thesetraditions not only help identify your chapter, they also have alarge impact on who you are and give you your Chapter Pride.

This Executive Committee is working hard to be an execu-tive committee that “gets things done.” We are working towardfostering Executive Committee “Chapter Pride” and being anexecutive committee that encourages Fraternity Pride. I amworking hard to ensure that as your Grand Historian, I continuethat tradition. I promised to give chapters the opportunity toupdate or create their written history. It is getting done. I hopethat each and every one of you can find the same inspiration inKappa Psi.

Chapter Pride means something different to all of us. It isimportant that we recognize the things we do that make ourchapters great and make us who we are as brothers.
