NEWSLETTER May 2019 P.3

WELcOME MESSagEWe would like to extend the warm hand of friendship by introducing this newsletter that is tailored for our friends in the global media.

At the time of writing, as organisers of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, we are reflecting on a hugely successful test event that gave us the opportunity to assess our state of pre-paredness.

And we can report that we passed the challenge by hosting a glorious 23rd edition of the Asian Athlet-ics Championships in Doha from 21 to 24 April.

The event enabled us to put all of our areas of operation to the test, and of particular interest to you will be the state-of-the-art media facilities and services that were called into action.

After months of meticulous planning, our international team was finally able to activate the accredita-tion system, media centre facilities, media tribunes, photographic locations, transport system, news information service and volunteers in an event-time working environment.

While we are satisfied with our performance and delivery in servicing a healthy international media corps of over 100 representatives, many of whom travelled to Qatar from overseas, it is important that we continue to strive for perfection.

So, we have listened to their feedback and we will learn from their experiences as we continue to de-velop all aspects of our operations so that when more than 2700 accredited media personnel arrive from over 80 countries in September, you can expect nothing but the very best in service, facilities and hospitality.

Hundreds of millions of fans from across the world will rely on your work to follow the world-class athletics action and, understanding your vital role in sharing the news, we remain committed to de-livering the very best media facilities and services through our highly skilled and experienced media team.

We hope that we have the opportunity to meet you in September, but, in the meantime, we would also welcome any feedback or advice that you may have in the spirit of cooperation as part of our media family.

April 2019DOHA PASSES THE ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS TEST

Records tumbled throughout the four days of scintillating action of a dazzling Asian Athletics Championships in the Khalifa International Stadium, the first test event ahead of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019.

The fast, brand new pink Mondo track witnessed 15 championship records, 47 national records and nine world leads - astonishing figures for a competition held in early April.

The state-of-the-art facilities at the renovated Khalifa International Stadium, the high-quality services from all operational areas offered to guests, officials, teams, media and spectators, along with Qatar’s traditional warm hospitality made the event not only a perfect appetizer for the World Championships, but also a great indicator for the organisers.

The Asian Athletics Championships was the first event where the Organising Committee could test how the cooperation of several departments - sport, media, accommodation, transportation, logistics, marketing, spectator services, catering and security - worked.

Judging from the feedback the LOC received from the Asian Athletics Association, the IAAF delegation, teams and media, the level of satisfaction was high. The stunning stadium and its cooling system came in for particular praise.

“The track of this wonderful stadium helped me beat the championship record,” said the 110m hurdles winner, Wenjun Xie from China, while Kuwait’s Yousef Karam, the 400m Asian champion, added that “so many sprinters broke their personal bests, a proof that the track is fast.”

On the last day of action, the performance that really caught the eye was Salwa Naser’s astonishing 49.70 lap in the 4X400m relay. The Bahraini won four of the five events she entered, missing only the 4X100m relay gold where she and her teammates finished third.

Bahrain’s haul of 11 golds placed them on top of the medal table, while hosts Qatar, despite being without top athletes Mutaz Barshim and Abdalelah Haroun, ranked sixth claiming two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

May 2019DIAMONDS SHINE IN DOHA

The 10th anniversary of the Doha Diamond League was yet another successful milestone on the road to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. The prestigious competition was the second test event and played a key path-finding role for the first World Athletics Championships to be hosted in the Middle East.

The meet was attended by Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani.

With its state-of-the-art facilities, Khalifa International Stadium, the host venue of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, impressed international athletes, officials and spectators.

A crowd of 13,000, including many Ethiopians and Kenyans who reside in Doha, gathered at the stadium where they were sent into raptures by their compatriots who excelled with their track heroics.

Overall, the competition produced one new Diamond League record, three meet bests and eight world leads.

Doha Diamond League was also Caster Semenya’s final race before the IAAF’s new rules came into force, while high jump victor Yaroslava Mahuchikh became, at 17 years and 226 days, the youngest woman to win a Diamond League event.

UK’s Dina Asher-Smith, the reigning European champion in the 200m and a winner in Doha, was full of praise for the competition and the facilities.

“This is a beautiful arena, I am so glad I came here,” she said. “To win in this stadium means a lot to me and it was nice to test out the arena and the track before the IAAF World Championships. There was a great championships atmosphere here.”

ThE VENUEKHALIFA INTERNATIONAL STADIUMKhalifa International Stadium, located at the Aspire Zone, 14km away from the heart of Doha, has played host over the last four decades to several international events including the 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and the 2011 Arab Games.

The renovation of the stadium, which began in 2014, was undertaken by Aspire Zone Foundation in partnership with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy. It included increasing the seating capacity to 48,000, adding hospitality and 64 VIP suites, constructing the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum and installing a state-of-the-art roof to cover all stands in the stadium.

A cooling technology that will keep the field to an optimum 26oC year-round, using 40% less energy than conventional stadium cooling tech, was installed. The technology distributes cooled air with the aim of cooling spectator stands, the field and decreasing the amount of hot air entering the stadium through its open roof.

In January 2018, a pink Mondo track for the main and warm-up tracks was installed.

MascotWhile the world’s best athletes will undoubtedly take centre stage in the weeks and months running up to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, a new local ‘celebrity’ has been introduced to capture the imagination of a whole new generation of athletics fans.

Falah, an athletic falcon emblazoned in the Qatari flag’s maroon colour, was unveiled as the event mascot on the country’s annual National Sports Day following a nationwide competition which was judged by a group of young ambassadors aged 8-16.

The winning design was created by Theodore Paul Manuel, a Filipino expat who has called Doha home since 2010. He can now look forward to seeing Falah become an event ambassador by inspiring thousands of children through visits to schools and sports clubs on his journey to the World Championships.

“Athletics for Falah is a way to show the world how to be a true athlete,” said Theodore, who also won 10,000 QR for his design. “He is competitive, courageous, and helpful like no other. He is loyal, funny, helps his friends and often shows off his athletic moves.

“I’m very excited that my idea has become a reality. I want to see how Falah inspires the event especially amongst the younger generation.”

Falah proved an instant hit with 500 children, aged 5-13, from schools across Doha when he was unveiled at a specially held ceremony at Qatar Foundation’s Awsaj Academy, attended by Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani.

He joined the kids in taking part in different inspiring and educational sports activities, coordinated by the IAAF and implemented through the Qatar Athletics Federation and Tsukuba University, who are part of the Tokyo 2020 legacy programme, Sports For Tomorrow.

The younger children, aged 5-8, took part in the IAAF’s signature Kids’ Athletics programme, one of the biggest grassroots development programmes in the world of sports.

Speaking during the milestone event, Vice Chairman and Director General of the Local Organising Committee and Vice President of the IAAF, Dahlan Al Hamad, said: “Falah represents the pursuit of excellence and symbolises the importance of always giving your very best in everything you do. These are the values and ambitions of the LOC, as we look to deliver an event that inspires a new generation and welcomes fans from all corners of the world.

“As a falcon, Falah can fly freely into new horizons without boundaries and that is our approach shaping and supporting athletics of the future. We want to showcase this wonderful sport to new audiences and more people than ever before, and engage new young athletes across Qatar, the region and the world. That can only happen if people take flight and join us by descending into Doha for the first ever IAAF World Championships in the Middle East, so the spirit of flight and adventure really connected with us through Falah.”

Volunteer ProgrammeOften described as the lifeblood for any major sporting event, volunteers hold the key to unlocking a successful and memorable international celebration, and the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 will be no exception.

An extensive programme to recruit and train over 3,000 volunteers is well underway and with more than 2,000 athletes expected from 213 countries along with 10,000 guests, 30,000 international spectators and thousands of media representatives from around the world, their role will be crucial.

All areas of operation will be relying on the energy, expertise and hard work of proud citizens who have stepped forward to support the internationally recruited workforce to deliver a truly world-class experience as one dynamic team.

Since registration opened in March, more than 2600 locally & Internationally based people from 88 nationalities have stepped forward to be counted with many already enjoying their event-time roles during the recent 23rd Asian Athletics Championships.

While the international media team consists of a number of seasoned professionals with decades of Olympic and World Championships experience, they will be supported by a hand-picked group of more than 150 volunteers to deliver a truly outstanding service.

Each volunteer will undergo extensive training with every aspect of the media operation meticulously planned so that they can carry out their vital role in an environment befitting of a major international event.

Abdulla Al Mulla, Director of the Media and Broadcasting Department, has been overseeing the recruitment of volunteers to his media team and believes those involved will be learning valuable skills that will stay with them for life.

“We are so pleased with the quality

and attitude of the volunteers who are working with us in the media team,” he said.

“A championship of such magnitude would never succeed without their valuable contribution, and the volunteers are learning new skills that can be implemented in their professional and personal lives.

“I know that their positivity, drive and energy will be a huge asset and will be appreciated by our friends in the media. They really will be the beating heart of our operation.”

The recruitment campaign will continue over the coming weeks with all volunteers provided with a uniform, accreditation, appreciation certificate and health insurance, and packages are currently being prepared to recruit a number of key international volunteers.

Those interested in volunteering can complete the application form available on http://volunteer.iaafdoha2019.com. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to register, and those below that age will require a consent from their guardian.
