Carrie Underwood

PLAYED  MARIA  on  the  2013  NBC  live  television  broadcast  of  THE  SOUND  OF  MUSIC.

ORIGINALLY  FROM  Muskegee,  OK,  born  1983.

GOT  HER  BIG  BREAK  as  winner  of  the  4th  season  of  the  television  program  “American  Idol.”

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  as  a  multi-‐Grammy  winning  recording  artist,  having  sold  15  million  albums  worldwide.  She’s  won  7  American  Music  Awards,  6  People’s  Choice  Awards,  9  CMT  Music  Awards,  9  American  Country  Awards  and  7  BMI  Songwriter  Awards.

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “…while  she  sang  “Do-‐Re-‐Mi”  and  “The  Sound  of  Music”  (“The  Hills  Are  Alive”)  with  lyricism  and  real  power,  Ms.  Underwood  doesn’t  have  a  lot  of  experience  or  natural  stage  presence:  She  delivered  her  spoken  lines  with  all  the  inflection  and  spontaneity  of  an  in-‐flight  safety  video.”  –  Alessandra  Stanley,  The  New  York  Times

Mary Martin

PLAYED  MARIA  in  the  original  Broadway  production  of  THE  SOUND  OF  MUSIC  IN  1959.

ORIGINALLY  FROM  Weatherford,  TX,  born  1913,  died  1990

SHE  GOT  HER  BIG  BREAK  on  Broadway  in  Cole  Porter’s    LEAVE  IT  TO  ME

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  for  originating  Nellie  Forbush  in  SOUTH  PACIFIC  and  the  title  role  in  PETER  PAN.  She  also  appeared  in  JENNIE  and  I  DO!  I  DO!,  led  the  London  cast  of  HELLO,  DOLLY!  and  was  a  Kennedy  Center  Honoree  in  1989.  She  won  four  Tony  Awards.

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “[Mary  Martin]  still  has  the  same  common  touch  that  wins  friends  and  influences  people,  the  same  sharp  features,  goodwill  and  flowing  personality  and  the  same  plain  voice  that  makes  music  sound  intimate  and  familiar…  The  sound  of  music  is  always  moving.  Occasionally  it  is  also  glorious.”  –  Brooks  Atkinson,  The  New  York  Times

Marie Osmond

PLAYED  MARIA  in  the  1994-‐95  national  tour  of  THE  SOUND  OF  MUSIC.

ORIGINALLY  FROM  Ogden,  UT,  born  1959

SHE  GOT  HER  BIG  BREAK  at  age  three  performing  on  The  Andy  Williams  Show

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  as  a  recording  artist  with  over  35  albums  and  numerous  gold  records,  many  with  her  brother,  Donny  Osmond.  Made  her  Broadway  debut  as  Anna  in  THE  KING  AND  I,  has  a  very  successful  Vegas  show,  and  is  a  co-‐founder  of  the  Children’s  Miracle  Network.

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “As  for  Osmond  as  Maria  —  well,  typecasting  refuses  to  die.  Yet  her  Maria  defies  the  stereotype,  for  she  is  a  truly  rebellious,  playful  spirit

who  looks  young  enough  for  the  kids  to  trust  her  as  a  co-‐conspirator,  and  who  matures  convincingly  as  Captain  Von  Trapp’s  consort…  Not  only  that,  she  sings  well.  Forget  the  misleadingly  sappy  posters:  she  is  a  more  interesting  Maria  than  that.”  -‐  Richard  S.  Ginell,  Variety

Nancy Dussault

PLAYED  MARIA  in  the  original  Broadway  production  of  THE  SOUND  OF  MUSIC,  beginning  in  1962.

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  for  Broadway  productions  of  BAJOUR,  SIDE  BY  SIDE  BY  SONDHEIM  and  INTO  THE  WOODS.  Television  credits  include  “The  New  Dick

Rebecca Luker

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  for  Tony  nominated  roles  including  Winifred  in  MARY  POPPINS  ,  Marian  Paroo  in  THE  MUSIC  MAN  and  Magnolia  in  SHOWBOAT.  Myriad  Off-‐Broadway,  opera,  symphonic  and  television  credits.

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “Although  she  pays  homage  to  the  most  famous  of  Marias  with  a  few  of  those  bewildered  hands-‐on-‐the-‐head  gestures  that  were  Ms.  Andrews's  signature,  she  doesn't  try  to  match  her  predecessor's  starched  poise.  If  Ms.  Andrews  was  the  dream  governess,  Ms.  Luker  is  much  more  a  girl's  girl,  and  when  she  romps  with  her  young  charges,  she  seems  like  one  of  the  gang.  This  persona  doesn't  provide  the  solid  charismatic  anchor  that  Ms.  Andrews  brought  to  the  film,  but  it  does  allow  Maria  to  grow  visibly  into  adulthood  when  she  falls  in  love  with  the  Captain.”  –  Ben  Brantley,  The  New  York  Times

Florence Henderson

PLAYED  MARIA  at  age  19  in  the  national  tour  of  THE  SOUND  OF  MUSIC

ORIGINALLY  FROM  Dale,  IN,  born  1934

STUDIED  AT  The  American  Academy  of  Dramatic  Arts

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  for  the  role  of  Carol  Brady  on  “The  Brady  Bunch,”  as  well  as  the  title  role  in  FANNY,  THE  GIRL  WHO  CAME  TO  SUPPER  on  Broadway,  and  Nellie  Forbush  in  the  national  tour  of  SOUTH  PACIFIC.  Later  one  the  most  recognizable  product  spokespersons  on  television.

Petula Clark

BROTHERS  and  SUNSET  BOULEVARD.

THE  REAL  MARIA  VON  TRAPP  SAID:  "If  I  never  see  The  Sound  Of  Music  again,  this  is  the  way  I  want  to  remember  it  -‐-‐  and  I  want  to  remember  Petula's  performance  as  the  greatest  performance  of  Maria."

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  FOR  creating  the  Broadway  roles  of  Eliza  Doolittle  in  MY  FAIR  LADY  and  Guinevere  in  CAMELOT,  award-‐winning  televisions  performances  as  the  title  roles  in  “Mary  Poppins”  and  “Cinderella,”  and  fundraising  with  the  United  Nations  International  Fund  for  Women,  Operation  USA,  Save  the  Children,  and  the  Foundation  for  Hereditary  Disease.

THE  PRESS  SAID  “Miss  Andrews,  with  her  air  of  radiant  vigor,  her  appearance  of  plain-‐Jane  wholesomeness  and  her  ability  to  make  her  dialogue  as  vivid  and  appealing  as  she  makes  her  songs,  brings  a  nice  sort  of  Mary  Poppins  logic  and  authority  to  this  role…  She  plays  a  more  saccharine  nanny  than  Mary  Poppins,  but  it  doesn't  get  her  goat.”  –  Bosley  Crowther,  The  New  York  Times

Laura Benanti

PLAYED  MARIA  in  1999,  stepping  in  for  Rebecca  Luker  in  the  1998  Broadway  revival

SHE’S  ALSO  FAMOUS  FOR  her  Tony  Award  winning  performance  as  Gypsy  Rose  Lee  in  GYPSY,  Tony  nominated  performances  as  Cinderella  in  INTO  THE  WOODS  and  WOMEN  ON  THE  VERGE  OF  A  NERVOUS  BREAKDOWN,  and  myriad  featured  television  credits,

including  leads  on  “The  Playboy  Club”  and  “Starved,”  and  the  role  of  Elsa  Schraeder  in  the  2013  NBC  live  broadcast  of  “The  Sound  of  Music.”

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “…charming,  silken  voiced”  –  Peter  Marks,  The  New  York  Times

"Unaffectedly  graceful  and  with  a  bell-‐clear  voice,  this  newcomer  is  surely  a  star  in  the  making."  –  Newsday

THE  PRESS  SAID:  “Soprano  Abigail  Paschke  was  sprightly  and  charming,  exhibiting  a  voice  as  clear  and  acrobatic  as  one  could  wish.  –  Terry  Ponick,  The  Washington  Times
