History: After the Civil War 1641-1651 and the death ofOliver Cromwell, Charles II was crowned in 1661 andLondon became swamped with a heaving mass of peopleand buildings. There was turmoil with spectacular wealthliving alongside grinding poverty. The original house wasbuilt, it is believed, by a colony of courageous Londoncitizens who set out from the capital in 1664 to find a newlife in the country. During the 18th century, Bix Manor wassignificantly added to and by the early 19th centurybecame a large and prestigious farm providing grain forthe thriving breweries of Henley. Farming ceased in the1960s and it was purchased by Gary Hall in 1986. Thedining room is probably the oldest part of the property, 30ftin length with its huge inglenook fireplace filling the wholeof the end wall.
