Maltby’s newest resident of 2011 arrived at 5:12am on New Years Day. Cohen James Garrett was born to Emma Jo Harris and Martin James Garrett at Rotherham General Hospital and has now taken up residence at Salisbury Road!

Maltby Redwood School has recently hosted a monitoring inspection from Ofsted, twelve months after being placed into Special Measures by the same organisation. Vice Chair of Governors Andrew Phillips told maltby.news, “The school has made huge progress since being placed into Special Measures by Ofsted.” Ofsted agree, commenting in their report “The rigour with which leaders are monitoring pupils’ achievement and the quality of provision has significantly improved. There is wider leadership team involvement and a broader

range of both informal and formal evidence is being collected. Consequently, evaluation is pinpointing strengths and weaknesses more sharply and all members of the senior team have a deeper understanding of the progress that has been made and remaining priorities for development.” Governors were also praised the report adding “ Governors are developing their ability to support the strategic direction of the school including identifying aspects where they can directly contribute to driving improvement. Underpinning this

improvement has been the commitment of governors to developing their own knowledge and understanding through both formal and informal training opportunities. Governors also have a much higher profile within school and this is helping to ensure they have a greater understanding of the school’s progress and are better placed to challenge under-performance.”Progress since the last monitoring inspection on the areas for improvement to improve leadership and management and to improve governance was described as”Good” in both respects. Maltby Phoenix Sword of Maltby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, is honoured and delighted to announce that the Earl of Scarbrough has generously agreed to be their patron. Maltby Phoenix Sword performs and maintains the tradition of the two types of traditional English sword dancing: Rapper sword dance and Longsword. The connections between Lord Scarbrough and Maltby Phoenix Sword are compelling. First of all, both reside in Maltby; the Earl of Scarbrough’s home is Sandbeck Park in the parish of Maltby. Secondly, Lord Scarbrough also owns the Lumley Estate in County Durham and his lineage can be traced back to William de Lumley who had property at Lumley on the Wear, County Durham, in the mid-1200s. The family seat is Lumley Castle at Chester-le-Street. The coalfield of Northumberland and Durham is home to the Rapper Sword Dance, originating in the 19th century when pitmen would perform in pubs, passing the hat round, or in competition with neighbouring villages. The dance is performed with a ‘rapper’ - a short sword of spring steel having handles at both ends. There are generally five dancers and elaborate stepping is an important part of this fast and often gymnastic dance. Coal mining under the Earl of Scarbrough’s estate in County Durham extends back into the 15th century. At one time the collieries beside the Wear at Lumley produced some of the most popular coal for the London trade. Although the Lumley family were not directly involved in coal mining, we are certain that pitmen from several rapper dancing teams toiled under the fields of the Lumley Estate.

A spokesman for Maltby Phoenix Sword said “The team is thrilled to have such a distinguished patron – particularly one who’s family has a history rooted in areas of coal mining, agriculture and our town of Maltby. We are looking forward to researching the archives further to identify precisely which sword dance teams used to live and dance on the Estates in South Yorkshire and County Durham.” The Earl of Scarbrough said, “I am delighted and honoured to be the patron of Maltby Phoenix Sword, and look forward to supporting them in the coming years. Their reputation is growing nationally, and I have no doubt that the team are, and will continue to be, exceptional ambassadors for Maltby as they travel the country and compete with such skill and success” Interestingly, the other dance that Maltby Phoenix Sword performs, the longsword, originated in agricultural communities of Yorkshire. The history of the Sandbeck Estate is agricultural, and it is known that longsword dancing occurred around here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Maltby Phoenix Sword was formed in 2002 to revive longsword and rapper sword dancing in the town. The dancers in this revival are mainly girls, unusual for this style of dancing. The team was represented in competition at Bath in Somerset in 2004 and did well but in 2005, to everyone’s surprise they won the top prize at the Dancing England Rapper Tournament (DERT) in Preston in Lancashire and were featured on BBC 1. Since then the team has grown and developed into a community sword dance club based in Maltby, Rotherham. Members are all young people from Maltby, from 7 to 17. The team is currently two-times Under-18

Schools Rapper Sword Champions and they came second in the Open Category at DERT 2009. Our youngest team, the ‘Nestlings’, are ‘wowing’ audiences all over the region. Practices are every Tuesday at The Edward Dunn Memorial Hall in Maltby.

Maltby Phoenix Sword is available for performances and can be booked for all manner of occasions at very reasonable rates.

The Earl of Scarbrough welcomes some of the team to Sandbeck House. With Lord Scarbrough are, from left to right (back row) Lucy, Megan, Jess, (front row) Laura, Katy and Sarah. Photography by John Davies.

Weight management classes for overweight children and their families in South Yorkshire are set to get underway in Maltby later this month. The free classes, run by Carnegie Weight Management, will begin on Saturday, January 22 and last for 12 weeks. After three months of attending the sessions, children will be able to access a 12-week follow up course and use facilities on a members’ website.

A spokesman for Carnegie Weight Management said: “The clubs are for children aged four to 17 who are concerned about their weight and can attend with a parent or carer. “They are a great way to kick start the new year, meet new friends, take part in fun activities and learn about healthy lifestyles.” Sessions will begin at Maltby Leisure Centre, on Wednesday, January 26.

All proceeds from the Carols Around The Buttercross event in Tickhill have

been distributed to local charities by the Salvation Army. The Maltby Salvation Army Brass Band accompanied the event which attracted a bumper crowd. ArmyofficerBarbaraSabinpaidtributeto the people of Tickhill.

Maltby Forum’s meeting, to be held at the Wesley Centre on the morning of Saturday 29th January 2011, will offer local people the opportunity to have their say about blocked roads, stranded vehicles, suspended buses

and ice-rink pavements. The aim will be to identify what went right and what went wrong during the bad snow and to frame a set of suggestions as to how a similar set of circumstances might be better managed in the future. The meeting will also follow up on its September discussions about Maltby Town Council spending. The Annual General Meeting will be staged immediately afterwards. Doors will open at 9.30am for a 10am start and anyone who lives or works in Maltby will be welcome to attend. KH

The Maltby Wood Lee Common and Crags Meadow Steering Group was fascinated to be shown this photograph which has recently come to light thanks to the kindness of the grandson of the first Headteacher of Maltby Crags Boys’ School. It depicts a substantial part of the Crags in the early nineteen-twenties when it was virtually devoid of vegetation. Since then Maltby Crags has

become overgrown by trees and shrubs. The area depicted is nationally recognised for its geology and forms a part of the Wood Lee Common Site of Special Scientific Interest. Natural England is now calling for management work to be undertaken to reduce the vegetation in order to prevent further damage to the rocky outcrops. Through the Steering Group, local people are working with expert help in an attempt to seek means of revealing the true nature of this important local site. Meanwhile works have begun on the footpath at the bottom of Maltby Crags thanks to funding from COMMA the Community Aggregates Fund. Groundwork Dearne Valley has been working with the Maltby Crags/Wood Lee Common Steering Group over the last year to make gradual improvements to the much loved site. GDV’s ‘Green Teams’ funded through the Future Jobs Fund have started on site and will try and cause little disruption to the pedestrians as possible For any further information about the project or about the steering group and future projects please contact either Lucy Cheetham GDV on 01226 740077 email [email protected]

Beauty ofthe CragsWhat does it take to deprive substantial

areas of Maltby, or indeed our whole town, of its buses? Cancellations and far distant curtailments associated with the 2007 floods, a big hole at the corner of Grange Lane and Salisbury Road and the last bad fall of snow have all served to demonstrate the increasing unreliability and inflexibility of local services. During the December snows, Maltby’s buses were first taken off completely then restored between Rotherham and the M18 island, only later to brought to the Queens and diverted back via Blyth Road. After that, services were very gradually restored as far as Dale Hill Road, Dinnington/Doncaster and the Quilter Road terminus. Frustrated intending travellers who made it to the High Street must have been highly delighted to observe that the only thing which never gave up was the electronic ‘at-stop information’ screen which incessantly flickered out phantom journey data! There was clear evidence of a lack of really well-honed co-operation between RMBC and the bus companies. When we contacted Streetpride on Friday 2nd December to suggest that, with a little strategically-

placed salt, some of our services (missing since the previous Tuesday evening) could have been got from the M18 island to the Queens then back via a diversionary turn-around, we got the ‘We work together with them but the operators have the final say’ response together with the advice to contact SYPTE and First Bus. Imagine our glee when, later that day, the weather eased and the first First 2 was sighted off-route on Blyth Road! The 87 terminus at Quilter Road was a different story. There, for want of timely RMBC gritting only feet from an A road, hard packed ice kept the short bus turnaround out of use for many days. One of the interesting findings drawn from 2001 census-data is that, in Maltby Ward (which covers the centre and eastern part of our town), more than a third of households do not have a car or van. Maltby Ward with 34.1% without cars compares unfavourably with the Borough average of 29.7%. During the freeze, faced with really dangerous sheet ice and without bus services, many families, elderly people and folk wishing to get to work were totally stuck. Shame nobody in authority appears to care about them!

Who cares about the car-less?

Charges for the replacement of some waste bins in Rotherham comes into effect later this month. From Monday, January 17, developers and management companies of newly-built properties and developments within the Rotherham borough will be charged for their first set of waste containers that are supplied. For an overall fee of £57 including delivery, new properties will each receive a 240 litre black bin, a 240 litre green bin, a blue box and a blue bag. Existing households will not have to pay for replacement recycling but replacement black bins will cost £22. A charge of £8 will be made for delivery although bins can be collected for free from Hellaby Depot (by arrangement) between 9 am and 2 pm Monday to Friday. All Rothercard holders will get a 50 per cent discount and there will also be exemptions on some replacement black bins. There will be NO charge for

replacement bins that have been set alight; stolen bins if a police incident number is provided; the larger 140 litre black wheeled bins for families of five or more; and black and green bins that have been damaged by the refuse crews during collection. Unlike many authorities across the country, the authority has traditionally issued free waste bins to householders But in the face of a mounting bill for replacements it was decided last year that it can no longer afford to do this, particularly as now it offers a far more complex recycling service with more containers. There are about 112,000 households in Rotherham and last year the authority provided over 25,000 replacement waste containers free of charge. This is a much higher number than other councils of the same size and cost the taxpayer over £200,000.Cllr Gerald Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Environment for the Council, said that the

authority simply cannot go on providing free waste containers. He added: “It is regrettable that we are having to introduce the £22 replacement charge but if we want to continue with our range of collections and improve our recycling rate we will have to introduce this fee. “We provided over 25,000 free replacement waste containers in 2009. This costs us a huge amount of money and it just cannot be sustained. However, if there are genuine reasons for the need for a replacement, such as being stolen, fired or damaged, then the free replacement will still apply. “In recent years, Rotherham’s residents have responded brilliantly to our recycling campaign. The borough now recycles 42 per cent of its household waste and we are doing everything we can to make that a more efficient and cost-effective operation, by using new multi-collection vehicles, for example. But we need to see recycling rate increase in order to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.” Last year the authority reached

a recycling rate of 42 per cent by providing a wide range of refuse and recycling services across the borough. Black bins take residual waste; green bins take green waste and cardboard; blue boxes collect cans, bottles, aluminium foil, shoes and textile recycling and blue bags collect waste paper. The authority also provides 54 ‘bring banks’ across Rotherham and has four Household Waste Recycling Centres.Further information about the scheme is available on the Council website or contact Streetpride on 01709 336 003. Meanwhile a whopping 200 tonnes of cardboard has been collected from the recycling residents of Rotherham since the Green Bin trial re-started after the recent bad weather! The card is taken to KCM Metals and Skip Hire in Rotherham for bulking and baling before being recycled through one of Rotherham Borough Council’s recycling partners, Newport Paper Company Limited. The Green Bin trial started

last year on November 29 when householders across the Borough were asked to temporarily stop using their green bins for green garden waste over the winter period and simply use them for cardboard instead. In previous winters difficulties arose for the authority’s Waste Management Team in trying to compost the material from the Green Bins which, during the winter months comprises of approximately 10 per cent garden waste and 90 per cent cardboard. This ratio is completely the wrong mix to try and compost and so it made far more sense to recycle just the cardboard instead during the winter months. Unfortunately, the trial was severely hampered by both the bad weather prior to Christmas and then the start of the Christmas waste collections, both of which resulted in a suspension of the Green Bin service altogether. Now the trial is back on track and may well be extended beyond the proposed suspension date in February. KH

Debra Palfreyman has just won Miss Slinky competition at the Braithwell group of slimming world. Debra lost 2st 8lb in 5months and reached her target weight in June of this year. She has maintained her weight since then and has just been voted by her fellow members at Braithwell group as Miss Slinky. Debra now goes forward to the national finals at head office where the winner will be announced in January. The prize is a £2000 shopping spree! Debra has diabetes and losing her weight has enabled her to manage her diabetes through food optimising alone and now has normal blood sugar levels, normal cholesterol levels and a healthy BMI. Debra says “she will still keep coming to group for the support she gets and wants to manage her diabetes through the eating plan for as long as possible”. Lynne Appleyard consultant for Braithwell says “ I am proud to have helped many members achieve their target weight in the last year since the group started. We have moved to a bigger venue at The Ruddle Centre and the group has grown considerably, and with the expected new members in January.

Debra is Miss SlinkyCouncillors, school children and members of the local Neighbourhood Watch group joined forces with national charity Living Streets late last year to plant almost 1,000 Spring bulbs around the entrance to Stanley Terrace, off Rotherham Road. The planting, organised by Living Streets and Groundwork Dearne Valley, was to celebrate the recent improvements made to the area, following a Community Street Audit held in March. Living Streets, the national charity which stands up for pedestrians, has worked in Rotherham since 2008 thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund and in partnership with Rotherham Council. Through their work they have helped local community groups and residents get fitter for walking, by creating streets and environments they can be proud of. Earlier this year, residents, alongside Living Streets carried out an audit of their local area, assessing what was good and what could be

improved for the benefit of those on foot. The recommendations of improvements were made to the council who have since installed dropped kerbs and new permanent bollards creating safer access to a nearby park. At the event, pupils from Lilly Hall Primary School, residents who took part in the original audit and

local council representatives worked alongside RMBC landscape staff to plant hundreds of Daffodil and Crocus bulbs on the grass verges at Stanley Terrace. If you would like to know more about the project in Rotherham, please contact Jim Shaw on 07590 048491.

As the New Year dawns, Maltby Town Council could be looking at changes in the forthcoming months with the elections taking place in May. Much has been achieved over the last four years. We have improved on the Christmas Illuminations, and the last two ‘Switch On’ events have been huge successes and of course not forgetting our brilliant Bonfire Nights. The hanging baskets and

the flowers along the High Street have been excellent and the Town has received compliments coming from as near as Tickhill and as far away as Scotland. The Christmas Markets were successful and well attended. There have been three Civic Services in the last three years and the annual Horticultural Shows. These events are now well established and it is hoped that they will continue for years to come.

A number of community groups and schools have benefited from financial grants given on a regular basis by our council, which have all been well received. Trusting that the New Year will bring continued achievement and success to the town - Maltby Town Council would like to wish our community a very happy and prosperous New Year.

As the New Year dawns

The Christmas lunch is a project which has been funded by the Wentworth Valley Area Assembly devolved budget. It is a joint project; organised by Wentworth Valley Area Assembly and partners including Maltby Town Council, South Yorkshire Police, Community Pay Back and Maltby Linx. This was the first of two taster sessions, the second being held on 20th January, at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, the idea being that it will become a regular event. A lunch of turkey and trimmings followed by Christmas pudding or trifle was cooked for 40 ‘older people’ by the Community

Pay back team (the meat and trifle was prepared by Carol at Maltby Linx). The food was served by a volunteer from Maltby, who just wanted to help, together with representatives from the Area Assembly, Maltby Town Council, PCSO’s, Rotherham Wardens and Tesco’s. The entertainment of line dancing, bingo, raffle, plus sequence dancing was organised by Maltby Town Council. Tesco made a donation of £80 towards the day as well as providing the bingo prizes. Prizes for the free raffle were donated by local shops, residents and Councillors.

I have joined a new fitness class as so many do just after Christmas. It’s called Zumba and the class I attended was at 7:15pm at the Brooklands Club, Maltby. You may be thinking, New Year’s Resolution but as it happens, it wasn’t. I vowed not to make any fitness related resolutions on the premise that they are never kept up

longer than a couple of months. I’d been hearing amongst my friends talk of this new dance craze, Zumba and I wanted to see what I was missing. Now I’ve tried a variety of exercise classes and I don’t stick to them, they don’t hold my enthusiasm, a couple of weeks and my passion wanes. I much prefer the dance classes I’ve attended, learning routines and dance steps has much more appeal and holds my interest because it’s not just about fitness it’s fun too. This is why Zumba appealed to me. Zumba is described as latin inspired with other red hot international music incorporated, I could see the latin influences however Zumba is something completely new, lively and energetic. The dance instructor, Lisa at the Brooklands, Maltby is friendly and welcoming and her top priority is that you have fun and enjoy her class. The class suits people of all age ranges and abilities and I would recommend it to anyone. Because the class is not intimidating you could go alone, not feel out of place and use it as a social occasion as well as a fitness class. You probably won’t remember all the moves first time, I know I didn’t but that’s not the main thing and I’m sure the more I go the more I’ll pick up. You can go at your own pace but because the tracks are played in quick sucession it means you work up a sweat and get fit without it feeling like exercise. Come along and try one of the classes, see advertisement(left). JB

Maltby Main have come out top of the class in the half term report for the North Eastern Counties Premier. At the time of going to press the Miners lie fourth and look set for an exciting second half to the campaign. They are on course for their best season since returning to the top flight in 2004/05 and their highest Premier Division place since finishing sixth in the 1997/98 campaign. Main go into 2011 in fine form having won their last seven league outings on the spin including a famous 4-2 victory at leaders and Premier Division title favourites Farsley AFC. The latest game in that run saw Thackley beaten 3-1 at Muglet Lane in a clash which saw both sides reduced to ten men and Maltby’s assistant manager Julian Watts sent from the home side’s bench along with striker Rob Brannigan and Thackley’s Andy

King. The red cards followed a mass brawl which Watts became embroiled in. Maltby scored the only goal of the first half just after the half hour when Adam Geliff, making his debut after signing from FC Brimington lashed in a shot from outside the area. Early in the second half, Shaun Airey brought Jonathan Wragg down and Geliff fired the free-kick over the wall and into the net fto make it 2-0. After the sending-offs there were two goals in the last three minutes of the game. Main went 3-0 up after a goalkeeping error – Convey slipping after racing out of his area to clear, gifting Oliver Warren an open goal Thackley substitute Harry Thompson drilled a shot through a crowd of players for the visitors’ consolation strike.
