It provides a safe and reliable service to the port users. Already at the end of the 14th century the city's main port becomes the Daugavas embankment, leaving the source of Rīdzene for small sailboats and ships wintering.

Daugava embankment was built as a strong continuous pile wall with a lot of exit points, which were used as water points and and there it was possible to load and unload ships.

In the war of Livonian the winners get the key of Riga and they can rule the port .

The Livonian war started in 1558, where between Lithuania and Polish union, Sweden and Russia on the

prize to the winner to become the port of Riga. These are anxious times for the city who is surrounded by hostile forces, which ended in 1581. with Polish victory. In 1591 391 sailing vessels came into the port, but the Polish reduces the competitiveness of the port due to high taxes.

In 1600 started the Polish – Swedish war of influence over the Baltic sea. Frequent Swedish attacks blocked ports and restricted trade to 1621 decisive battle for Riga. Swedes break the resistance of the Riga peaople.

About 300 sailing vessels annually visit the port of Riga. Flow of goods from the East increased, high customs duties due to escape of the cargo through the port of Courland and Prussia.

In 1700 Russian Czar Peter the first declares war on Sweden. In 1710 the key of Riga has been received by Count Sheremetyev. In the 18th century there were witnessed intensive engineering and construction work in the bed of Daugava. Deepening of the river and the city protection from spring floods is the main reason to start

the construction of dams. In 1788 the first lighthouse was constructed near

Daugava, which replaced the existing bonfire in the log tower. The first navigation school has been made in 1788.

At the start of the new century shipping port of Riga is becoming a critical due to the silting of the fairway. The city's foreign trade has become completely dependent on dredging. It is funded mainly by traders or the Riga Stock Exchange Committee , and the dredging works are in use at the time cutting-edge ideas and engineering machinery. In 1881 Riga is vissited by the first steamer ‘’Oscar’’ .

In 1850 the construction of the Western Pier was started. From 1881 to 1885 the construction of the West Pier has been completed and the Riga Sea Gate acquired its present appearance. In 1877 the port of Riga has acquired its first icebreaker.

On 31st May in 1898 the extended borders of the port were approved.

The new century started with the world's industrial crisis. In the early 20th century, Riga is the largest Russian timber exporter city. In 1915 starts the Riga factory, ship and port facility evacuation to Russia. In 1917 outgoing Russian troops blowed up the bridges of Riga port and some buildings.

In 1918 the Latvian republic was proclaimed, and that same year at Christmas the world's first ship lifted the red-white-red Latvian flag. In 1920, Latvian - Russian signed the peace contract and the renewal of economic life begun.

In 1926, the icebreaker Krišjānis Valdemārs started his work. In 4th May of 1990 Latvian Supreme Council adopted the Declaration of Independence and in the Riga's port history begins a new phase.

The Freeport of Riga has developed - 15 kilometers in length

The main cargo of the Freeport are containers, various metals, wood, coal, mineral fertilizers, chemical cargoes and oil products.

The port is open for navigation all year.
