The main objective of celebrating The WorldHeritage Day is to preserve the heritage of thethree categories i.e, natural, cultural andmixed for the next generation and put itsrelevant efforts in front of the world. Today,there are a grand total of 1,121 UNESCO WorldHeritage Sites worldwide, of which 869 arecultural, 213 are natural and 39 are a mixture.53 of these are in danger. India has a total of 35world heritage sites, of which 27 are cultural,7natural & one mixed site.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE WORLD HERITAGE DAY
Heritage is about flowing traditionsthat are on one hand handed downfrom the past and on the otherhand traditions that are created inthe present and will be passed inone form or the other to futuregenerations. Hence Heritage is aParampara and represents aNation’s identity.

OUR CULTURAL ANDNATURAL HERITAGE ARE BOTHIRREPLACEABLE SOURCES OF LIFE.PLACES AS UNIQUE AND DIVERSE AS THEWILDS OF EAST AFRICA’S SERENGETI,THE PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT, THE GREATBARRIER REEF IN AUSTRALIA AND THEBAROQUE CATHEDRALS OF LATINAMERICA MAKE UP OUR WORLD’SHERITAGE.

Ancient monuments and buildings in thecountries make them stand tall on worldmap. World Heritage Day is a collectiveeffort of the communities in the world todo the needful for these invaluableassets. The day takes an opportunity tocreate awareness about the assortmentof cultural legacy and the efforts that arerequired to protect and conserve them.World Heritage Day on 18th April iscelebrated around the globe.

The theme for World Heritage Dayfor the year 2020 is ‘SharedCulture’, ‘Shared heritage’ and‘Shared responsibility’, which isimportant as an expression forglobal unity with current worldwide health crisis.

The proposal to celebrate World Heritage Day was
first made on 18th April 1982 at the International
Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). This
suggestion was approved by the Executive
Committee, as well as by the UNESCO General
Conference in 1983. UNESCO seeks to encourage
the identification, protection and preservation of
cultural and natural heritage

The famous Ajanta Caves includingthe unfinished ones are thirty innumber. After centuries of oblivion,these caves were discovered in AD1819. They fall into two distinctphases with a break of nearly fourcenturies between them. All the cavesof the earlier phase date to centuryBC-AD. The caves of the second phasewere excavated during the supremacyof the Vakatakas and Guptas.

The most notable marvel is the stately SunTemple, built in c. AD 1250, during the reign ofthe Eastern Ganga King Narasimhadeva-I (AD1238-1264), to enshrine an image of Sun(Arka), the patron deity of the place. The entirecomplex was designed in the form of a hugechariot.

There are a number of ways we can protect heritage assetsto ensure they are passed onto future generations for theirenjoyment. Here are some ways to protect our cultural andnatural heritage :
•Erecting a fence to prevent animal damage.• Restoring a collapsed historic wall . • A program to reintroduce a plant species.•Ensuring indigenous access so that traditional practices are continued.
