We are pleased to present this year’s picture profi le of the 2013 Hospitality Stars of the Indus-try Awards winners as well as an overview of this wonderful event.

The 14th annual Hospitality Stars of the Industry Dinner and Awards was held at the beautiful Renaissance Battle House Hotel and Spa in Mo-bile, and had over 300 guests in attendance. This year we had a number of remarkable nominations, and the winners chosen clearly showed how great our industry is.

As has happened every year, the most heart-warming stories and the most heartfelt ap-plause went to the employees of our hotel, res-taurant, and tourism industry members. We not only have great leaders running and manag-ing our properties, but we have great individu-als working for the industry. An added touch was the expansion of the Bartender of the Year Award with the addition of a revolving trophy and successful regional contests held around the state. The excitement for this segment con-tinues to grow, and this will probably be a piv-otal part of future awards dinners.

This issue of The Main Entrée features an an-nual Buyers Guide. We encourage our industry Members to support those Allied Members who support the organization. Our Allied Members play a large role in the success of the organi-zation. Therefore, it is important that you seek them out for your product and service needs.

As we begin our second year as a merged or-ganization, Alabama Restaurant and Hospital-ity Alliance (ARHA), you will notice a signifi cant change in our Board of Director’s listing. Last year the merger committee put together an interim Board of Directors who helped guide us through the fi rst year of transition. At the Annu-al Meeting in October, the members elected a board consistent with the bylaws of the new organization. In doing so, the new ARHA board has a number of new faces and representa-tion from a wider variety of member segments. We are pleased to present this new board to you and are delighted to be working with such

esteemed and established individuals. We believe this new board will help us focus and achieve the goals of the organization.

2014 brings about an exciting change for our Lodging Members. Due to a signifi cant reor-ganization of our national partner, the Ameri-can Hotel and Lodging Association, ARHA is now able to offer lodging property dues at a much lower rate than in previous years. Lodg-ing properties can now join the Alabama Res-taurant and Hospitality Alliance at discounts of up to 40%, making this dues category much more affordable. It offers reduced dues for cur-rent ARHA members.

It continues to be an exciting time for ARHA and the growth of the organization is defi nitely headed in the right direction. We thank you the members for your support, and look forward to serving you in the future.

Welcome New ARHA Members

Every year since 2006, the Mississippi Hospital-ity & Restaurant Association (MHRA) and the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance (ARHA) have squared off on the golf links, vy-ing for the coveted Old Shrimp Boot Trophy.

The 8th Annual Great Gulf Golf Challenge took place at Shell Landing Golf Course in Gautier, Mississippi. With two teams posting identical scores of 56 (-16), Team MHRA retained the Old Shrimp Boot by winning a scorecard play-off against Team Descher/McDonalds.

Proceeds from this tournament go directly to the National Restaurant Association (NRA). A portion will go to the NRA PAC. The Restaurant PAC is a voluntary, non-partisan political ac-tion committee formed in 1977 to support and elect pro-industry and pro-business congres-sional candidates for federal offi ce.

The remaining portion will go to the Restaurant

Advocacy Fund. The Restaurant Advocacy Fund was created in 2011 to help fund advo-cacy and issue campaigns on legislative and regulatory issues important to restaurants of all sizes and regions. The Restaurant Advocacy Fund supports restaurants’ interests in coopera-tion with the National Restaurant Association, state restaurant associations, independent and multi-unit restaurateurs and other partners. The agenda of the Restaurant Advocacy Fund covers a broad range of issues affecting res-taurants, including labor, health care, union organizing, credit card interchange “swipe” fees, menu labelling, sodium restrictions, estate tax repeal, restaurant depreciation and immi-gration. With so many matters that are crucial to the survival of our industry, we need fi nan-cial backing to make sure that we are being proactive and identifying ways to fi nd solutions in a timely manner.

If you would like to contribute to either fund, contact Mike at 601.608.0221.

Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs) have a long-standing history as an important part of the lodging industry. Unique in concept and cozy in accommodation, B&Bs have much to offer travelers.

The custom of opening one’s home dates back to the earliest days of Colonial America. Larger lodging establishments were not prevalent in the 18th century. Instead, travelers relied on the kindness of strangers to invite them into their homes and provide them a bed for the night.

With the arrival of the railroad, hotels became more popular, and by the time cars came along, most major towns had at least one prominent hotel. The Great Depression drove Americans back into B&B-style accommodations, benefi cial for both guest and host to save and make money, respectively. After World War II, Americans began more frequent travel overseas and, seeing European-style B&Bs, became inspired to emulate these models, updating their homes. Around the same time, others became interested in preserving historic structures and styles, and opening a bed and breakfast provided the opportunity to do just that.

Today, B&Bs are a vital and vibrant segment within the lodging industry. They provide out-of-town travelers a singular experience of the visited city, and they give locals a chance to get away in comfort without going too far. The proliferation of the Internet has made great improve-ments in marketing for B&Bs, allowing them to reach out to people across the world.

Bed and Breakfasts

Filling a Niche Within the Lodging IndustryBy Kirsten Squires

13• Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance • The Main Entrée • Buyers Guide • Vol. 3 Issue 1 •

A mere twenty years ago, there were roughly 1,000 bed and breakfasts scat-tered across the country. Today, that number has expanded to more than 28,000, serving 50 million guests each year. The appeal of bed and breakfasts shows in this rapid growth pace.

With so many options for accommoda-tion when traveling, what are some of the reasons guests choose B&Bs? Many appreciate the peace and quiet they offer, as well as the personal attention received from the hosts. Others appreci-ate the tranquility brought on by staying somewhere rich with history. Whatever the reason, one thing remains clear: bed and breakfasts offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Over the years, Bed and Breakfasts evolved from a need that drove stran-gers into the warm, welcoming homes of others to a way to preserve historic signifi cance and give travelers a respite with a return to home-style hospitality. Today’s B&Bs tend to operate with a unique amalgamation of these roots, with the added touch of modern convenienc-es one would need to stay in touch with the outside world.

A wonderful example of this is The Lattice Inn Bed and Breakfast, situated in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama. Located in the historic garden district, near the Governor’s Mansion, guests can experience old world comfort in the tastefully updated 1906-era cottage. With such ambiance, it’s easy to get carried away in romanticism, but make no mistake: The Lat-tice Inn still has plenty of modern amenities. Each of the four guest suites features free Wi-Fi and HDTV with Apple TV, allowing guests to connect to their favorite technological com-forts of home, such as Netfl ix or Hulu. There is a business center for those who need to put in some work time. For those who want to get away from the noise of the world, there are several areas in which to escape. Guests can relax in the hot tub or saltwater pool, or they can immerse themselves in the beauty of the garden areas, featuring a Koi pond.

Owner/Innkeeper Jim Yeaman took over in 2007, after the property sat vacant after exten-

sive damage from Hurricane Ivan and the sud-den passing of the Innkeeper, Michael Pierce. Yeaman brought the business back to life with updated designs and new furnishings. These improvements have garnered the Inn an infl ux of visitors and some prestigious awards, includ-ing winning a Certifi cate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.com in 2012 and 2013.

Aside from gorgeous scenery and peaceful accommodations, The Lattice Inn offers one more valuable asset to guests: Yeaman, or Inn-keeper Jim as he is referred to by guests. Travel-ers have many words to describe Yeaman as a host; among them, “gracious,” “perfect,” and “thoughtful.” He is said to cook a delicious breakfast, and to go above and beyond to make sure his guests are satisfi ed. All of these things come together to make The Lattice Inn a great example of how a successful bed and breakfast is made.

This award-winning property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There were a lot of tremendous people who were acknowledged for their exceptional work and captivating stories during the 14th annual Hospitality Stars of the Industry Dinner and Awards. The Front of the House Restaurant Award embodies both hard work and a great story, and in October 2013 the award was presented to Willie Brown of Wintzell’s Oyster House, a historic landmark on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile, Alabama.

A truly amazing individual, working in an indus-try with a high turnover rate, Willie Brown has managed to celebrate his 43rd year anniver-sary employed at Wintzell’s Oyster House; yes that’s right, 43 years. Starting his career in 1970, with zero experience shucking oysters Willie applied for the job at Wintzell’s Oyster House. After getting a position Willie learned from vet-eran oyster shuckers, and in time turned his skill into a craft. Willie has served millions of oysters to thousands of customers; by any standard he is considered and oyster expert.

Working in the front of the house, it is expected that you make an outstanding impression on guests through quality service and salesman-ship. Oysters are the signature menu item at Wintzell’s Oyster House; therefore, there must be a great deal of focus on the prepara-tion that he must maintain. Willie’s attention to the details in all dimensions of the business keeps him well prepared to deal with anything thrown his way. His ability to manage dual roles with ease by honing his specialized expertise in oyster shucking and relating to people has made him “a tourist attraction in his own right” as described by Mayor Sam Jones. So much so that three years ago they honored Willie by proclaiming November 23, 2010 as “Willie Brown Day”. This year Wintzell’s Oyster House celebrated by offering customers 43¢ raw oys-ters by the dozen plus 75¢ pints of Miller Lite and Coors Lite.

He has also been honored with a statue by the Oyster Trail Project with a painted four-foot-tall fi breglass oyster sculptor featuring Willie cre-ated by artist Devlin Wilson. The statue stands adjacent to the restaurant, reminds customers and everyone who passes by just how special Willie Brown is.

As humble as they come, even with all the lo-cal fame, Willie’s coworkers admire his service and his sense of humility. When asked how he felt about winning this award Willie said “It was a complete surprise. Bob told me to wear a jacket and that’s about it. I had no idea.” A man of few words, Willie has been known to let his work speak for itself.

Willie goes to show that if you approach your job, no matter what that job may entail, with a positive outlook, hard work and passion you can transcend all expectations. Willie started from humble beginnings, stayed true to him-self, and has become a local icon, holding himself to the same standards he did back in 1970 when he fi rst started.

It’s not every day you hear of such an amaz-ing tale of loyalty, respect and dedication. The staff and Board of Directors of Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance are hon-ored to share the story of such a genuine hu-man being.

Sincere congratulations to Willie Brown and all of the other winners and nominees of the 14th annual Hospitality Stars of the Industry Dinner and Awards. Another year has passed with an-other great event, honoring some of the most deserving men and women in the industry.

The 14th annual Hospitality Stars of the Industry Dinner and Awards is always a spectacular event; and this year was no exception. Great atmosphere, delicious food and wonderful peo-ple all came together to celebrate the achievements of the best Stars of the Hospitality and Foodservice Industry in the state. The Awards Dinner took place on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the beautiful Renaissance Battle House Hotel and Spa in Mobile. As guest entered to a live band you could tell this event was beautifully put together, full of class with a fun undertone throughout the whole evening. The event started with an introduction speech by Larry Fidel, the President of the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance (ARHA). After a few brief words Larry welcomed the several dignitaries from around the area who were in attendance. Reggie Copeland, the President of the Mobile City Council, John Williams, the City Councilman, City Councilwoman Bess Rich and City Councilwoman Gina Gregory were all given a warm wel-come from everyone in attendance.

After a beautiful invocation by Wayne Reaves it was time to serve dinner, which just as in past years, was truly a magnifi cent meal. The entertainment was provided by Sean Worrell Jazz Trio while a video tribute to all the fi nalists played throughout the dinner. After dinner recognition was given to the Chef and the staff who prepared the meal for the entire event, the General Manager Margo Gilbert, Food and Beverage Manager Edwin Torres, Event Coordinator Patty

Davis and the entire hotel crew for their help in making this event such a special event for all the guests. After reluctantly giving up their trophies, last year’s winners of the Hotelier of the Year, Larry Bowser, and Supplier of the Year winner Nick Harmann were presented with their plaques to recog-nize their past year’s achievements.

David Holloway was the emcee for the night. Holloway takes his food seriously and is sought out to judge many food-related contests as well as being the food editor for AL.com. This is the beginning of a great event, with some of the hardest working people in the industry being acknowledged for their dedication to their crafts.

The evening officially began with the presentation of the first award of the night, which was Legislator of the Year and the winner was Mike Jones. Although this was Jones’ first term in the Alabama House of Representative, his keen leadership abilities did not go unnoticed. In 2011 he was named a Rising Star among the Alabama Legislators by the Mobile Press Registers and was also selected to at-tend the Emerging Leaders conference at the University of Virginia in 2013. His peers look to him for information on legislation as he is known for his dedication in reading all 1500 plus proposals that are introduced in the legislature, not an easy task for sure.

As if that wasn’t enough for one man, he serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the powerful Rules committee which determines what bills are placed for consideration for a floor vote. These are some of the rea-sons Representative Jones was chosen, by the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance, to handle the Com-monsense Consumption Bill, which is known as the Frivo-lous Obesity Lawsuit Bill. After countless hours, both in the House and the Senate, Jones managed to successfully negotiate the passing of the Bill. He was a major part in the passing of a bill that outlawed an antiquated bill on the books that prohibited an individual from working in two different establishments that sold alcohol. This bill has greatly increased employment opportunities for not only citizens but for those in the industry who rely heavily on part-time workers. For these reasons and more it is easy to see why Representative Mike Jones was chosen as the 2013 Industry Stars Awards Legislator of the year.

The Bartender of the Year Competition was sponsored by American Harvest Vodka. This year’s five competitors earned their spot in the competition by winning their region’s individual contest. In do-ing so they earned the right to represent themselves and their restaurant in this fast growing com-petition. The action took place during the reception right before the Awards Dinner started. The 1st

place winner was awarded $2,000, the 2nd place winner got $500 and 3rd place won $300.

Although all of the competitors did a great job, there could only be one winner and that honor went to Scott Fowler of the Oak and Olive Lounge in Dothan. Scott has been with the Oak and Olive Lounge for two years, starting there a month after their Grand Opening. In that time he has built a reputation as one of the best bartenders around. A few words used to describe him are hospitable, genuine, articulate and funny. Scott embodies what it means to be an excellent bartender, mak-ing his guests feel welcome and wanting to come back for more. He has a knack for making each customer feel special. Always sporting a smile and his signature Bowler hat, you can rely on Scott to make you feel at home. It doesn’t hurt that this guy can mix a great cocktail, pouring every ounce of knowledge he has into each drink. Scott is known for making up his own concoctions that have become staples on the menu, with creations like the famous “Fowler’s Return” and fan favorite “Fowler’s Fizz”. Bottom line, if you are looking for a unique, fun experience and a chance to try some truly amazing cocktails then you’ll be hard pressed to find a better place than the Oak and Olive Lounge. Look for the guy wearing the Bowler hat; he’ll be sure to mix up something tasty.

2nd place went to Kristen Price of Lulu’s in Gulf Shores and 3rd place was Amanda Bryant of Eastside Grille in Montgomery. Congratulations to everyone on this remarkable achievement.

Chef of the Year is one of the most debatable awards, with many pulling for their favorite Chef. This year’s winner left no doubt and was proudly presented to Marty Pollock of the Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa. This place sounds familiar right? Marty works in the very place the Hospitality Stars of the Industry Dinner and Awards was held. He has been with the Battle House Renaissance Mo-bile Hotel & Spa since 2007, being recruited shortly after graduating from the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts.

Marty has been the hotel’s Executive Chef since 2009 and has met or exceeded department goals each year, while providing a superb product to hotel guests. He has a knack for selecting the best ingredients within his budget and transforms raw materials into edible works of art. His food has been cited in a number of local, regional, na-tional and international publications, receiving glowing reviews. He is a master chef, taking on challenges, once making a 6 foot tall gingerbread replica of the hotel in less than 3 days! Chef Marty attends every function, no matter the time, and nothing leaves the kitchen without his approval. He is always surprising diners with his novel use of food, marrying traditional Northern Italian food with a Deep South twist. Although he is a brilliant chef, his passion doesn’t stay in the kitchen. Chef Marty is constantly helping the community, whether he is supporting local fund-raisers or the national program Veggie U. Here he trains chefs on the benefits of healthy eating and encourages them to reach out to their local communities.

The 2013 winner is Tracy Adams of the Perdido Beach Resort. Tracy originally entered the hospitality industry in 1987 as a front desk clerk at the Perdido Beach Resort. Tracy is now the Director of Sales and Marketing at the resort and focuses on marketing her property as well as promot-ing the Alabama Gulf Coast as a beautiful vacation and meeting spot. After talking to her it is easy to see that she truly believes this area is a captivating place for everyone. This award is presented to those in the restaurant and hos-pitality industry who are dedicated to improving the lives of others. This is a special award, so special that ARHA de-cided to honor two winners: Casey Smith of the Renais-sance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel and Susan Womack of the Sheraton Birmingham.

Let us first take a look at Casey Smith, who has been with the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel since 2006 where she started as an Accounting Clerk. With a giving spirit and a love for children she rallies behind many caus-es. Casey brings enthusiasm to the act of charitable giv-ing and participation in local events that few can match. She is always researching different events like the River Giver meetings which she faithfully attends. Casey is often up early on weekends participating in some kind of char-ity run or taking a week of her vacation time to volunteer as a counselor at United Cerebral Palsy’s Camp Smile. In 2013 Casey has participated along with her co-workers in a local Habitat for Humanity build project in Mobile, as well as the Stephen Siller 5k Tunnel to Towers run honor-ing the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and its victims while raising money for fallen heroes and their families.

Susan Womack who was an administrative assistant at the Sheraton Birmingham and has worked her way up to a management position in a year and a half. Susan is a wonderful example to all in the hotel through her acts of kindness and boundless energy she applies to humanitar-ian projects. Susan is the chair of the Sustainability Council at the Sheraton Birmingham. Through her efforts the hotel continues to reduce their carbon footprint by initiating or supporting a number of programs such as: Make a Green Choice Program; Recycling Competitions between De-partments; Planning a Roof-Top Garden at the hotel; Sher-aton’s Earth Hour Celebration which is an annual world-wide event where Sheraton Hotels turn off Hotel lights to bring focus on saving energy. That’s not all…local com-munity service events like the Ronald McDonald House, Red Nose Run and Jones Valley Teaching Farm.

It’s clear that Casey Smith and Susan Womack have dedi-cated their lives to giving and caring for other people in an attempt to changes lives and they do a great job.The

The Front of the House Hospitality Employee of the Year is someone in a non-managerial position who works at least 20 hours a week and has served the industry for at least two years. The winner of the award was George Daffin, a kind, fun-loving man who works hard with a smile on his face. George makes it a point to say good morning to eve-ryone at Grand Hotel of Point Clear and has an uncanny ability to get to know everyone he comes in contact with. He refers to his coworkers as part of a “Grand Family” and rarely forgets a name or a face. George always makes the guest of the Grand Hotel of Point Clear Alabama feel right at home by remembering if they have been there before and other small details.

When guests ask George how he is doing you can be sure to hear his signature catch phrase “well and bless.” When asked why he says that each time he remarks “I’m just glad to be a part of every day. We have a choice eve-ryday on how we are going to live that day, and I have chosen to be glad I’m a part of it, whatever the day brings.” George is a people pleaser and he takes joy knowing he has made a positive impact on someone’s life. He often says to guests, “I hope we made an impact on your life that will allow you to return and visit us again.” That right there says it all; with a “can do” attitude and great outlook on life George was the clear choice for this award.

Back of the House Restaurant Employee of the Year cel-ebrates an individual doing all of the hard behind the scenes work. The host Hotel, the Renaissance Battle House Hotel and Spa was proud to see Edina Vojvodic walk up to the stage to receive this award. Edina is affectionately known as the “mother of the kitchen,” always making sure the entire team is upbeat and in good spirits. Edina ab-solutely loves her job and the people she works with, and she is passionate about her work. Her chicken salad has become famous at the hotel; both associates and guests ask her for her recipe. She has won several “Gold Key” ho-tel awards, given out for event supervision in ensuring eve-rything goes smoothly. She has been deemed as one of the “go-to people” when it comes to large events. Edina’s work ethic and teamwork style attitude is infectious. Not only is Edina hard working but she makes sure her entire team runs efficiently. She can be found working a num-ber of different positions including housekeeping, culinary, dining room and even purchasing. It is not uncommon for

Edina to start work around 4:00 am and not leave until 2:00 am: she is committed to her job and she does it well. This award is earned with hard work, so it is no surprise Edina took this one home.

Faye Rivers of the Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa has been in the hospitality industry since 1985, holding various positions until she settled into Human Resources. In 28 years of working in the industry she has gained valuable experience and knowledge, just a few of the things that make her a well rounded employee. Faye had spent her career, 16 years to be exact, with PCH Hotels and Resorts. Since joining the Ross Bridge family she has turned her de-partment around and transformed the hotel into an effi-cient well-oiled machine. Someone as hard-working and dedicated as Faye doesn’t confine herself to working in the Hotel; she has a passion for community involvement and charity. Some projects include collecting Box Tops for schools, partnering with the Ronald McDonald House, donating unclaimed lost and found items to the Salvation Army, participating in a Mock Interview Seminar for spe-cial needs students in the Shelby County School system,

and arranging fundraisers for breast cancer awareness. Faye’s love of giving back has made its way into the resort, where she organized a weight loss program called the “Ross Bridge Biggest Loser,” completely planned a Marriott Associate Appreciation Week, enrolled the department in Spanish classes, and personally gave the Housekeeping department hand massages for part of Housekeep-ing Appreciation Week. In addition, Faye puts together contests to boost morale and teamwork.

Edwin Torres of the Renaissance Riverview Plaza & the Bat-tle House Mobile Hotel and Spa is the Area Director of Food and Beverage. He takes his job seriously and is constantly pushing the envelope to find new and creative ways to drive progress and success. Edwin is an active member of the in-house volunteer/charity group called River Giv-ers, giving back to the community. Edwin’s management style may seem a bit unorthodox to some but it is amaz-ing to watch. His soft yet stern style allows him to motivate and care for his associates, while at the same time holding them accountable for excellent service and controls. He makes it clear to all his associates how he wants his de-partment to operate and makes sure everyone is always on the same page. There is no one in his department that does not understand exactly what Edwin is looking for in his daily operations. Edwin joined Renaissance Mobile Riv-erview Plaza in 2009 and took on a department that was not performing well from a financial or guest service standpoint. He rose to the challenge and while instilling hard work and a new found pride in the department brought them from the bottom all the way to the top with all of their event satisfaction score rankings. All that dedication paid off, bring-ing the Battle House to the top 10 of all North American Renaissance hotels in overall satisfaction.

The nominees for this award were described as an illus-trious collection of Managers, but this night belonged to Aniese Harris of the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort Point Clear. Aniese’s hard work and dedication are one of the main keys to the hotel’s success. She has been an instrumental part in maintaining the hotel’s immaculate status of being in the top 1% of all Marriott Resorts in regards to break-fast service for many years. There is no slacking off when it comes to Aniese; she manages a team of about 40 as-sociates and keeps them happy and motivated. She ranks as one of the top managers within the hotel in terms of associate satisfaction. Her associates describe her as one of the hardest working managers at the hotel. She works side-by-side with her associates and is committed to ensur-ing that her AM restaurant remains in that top tier 1% of all Marriott Resorts. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed over her 25 years of service. She has been recognized as a valuable leader, receiving many awards and acknowl-edgements such as, the PCH Leadership, Manager of the Quarter and Manager of the Year awards. These are true testaments to her excellent managerial skills. Aniese is a remarkable leader who takes great pride in her work and teaches her associates to do the same. She is a coach, mentor and friend. She is selfless and giving, always answering ques-tions and taking the time to show an associate the right way to do things. She has been often cred-ited with putting the needs of others before her own in order to ensure a peaceful and stress-free environment. Her associates love her and, most importantly, love to work with her.

Hotelier of the Year goes to Joe White of the Birmingham Marriott. During Joe’s tenure as the General Manager, he has achieved world class results. Few have seen the suc-cess that Joe has achieved in only two years. He brought his hotel to the top ten rankings in numerous areas, includ-ing a #2 ranking for Overall Satisfaction, and a #1 ranking for Staff Service Overall. As a natural born leader he has in-creased work performance, optimism, demonstrated suc-cess in customer satisfaction, quality audits, and reached revenue levels that were supposed to be unachievable. Group Sales have increased 34%, catering sales improved 12% and room revenue has improved tremendously. Joe was awarded the Birmingham Marriott “The Service Excel-lence Leadership Award”. The key to his success is treating his associates like family. He is genuinely concerned about their lives and dedicates time to plan and forecast business demands 90-days out. This enables time off for associates

to rejuvenate and return ready to deliver world class service. Joe is active in the communities where his associates live. He led several managers in volunteering time, personal finances and equipment to help re-build communities that were destroyed when more than 20 tornadoes touched down in April 2011, a disaster that took countless lives and destroyed neighborhoods.

The winner of the Restaurateur of the Year Award was presented to Lucy Buffett. Although she could not make the event, her award was accepted on her behalf by her family. If you are thinking the Buffet name sounds fa-miliar, you’d be right, Lucy is the sister of legendary musi-cian Jimmy Buffet. LuLu’s and Lucy B Goode are Lucy’s establishments right on the water, with amazing views, fun atmosphere and good food. Lucy was inspired by both of her grandmothers love of food and entertaining. Lucy had gone through several twists of fate which brought her all over, with careers spanning the Pacific Coast over to the Atlantic coast and back to the Gulf coast where she finds herself the proud “mama” of two growing restaurants, not to mention a merchandising and publication business. Ask her and she’ll tell you this is all an act of love, one that makes her a self- described “Crazy Sista” in the sense that she marches to the beat of her own drum, Southern-style. LuLu’s in Gulf Shores was opened in 2004 and Lucy B Goode opened very recently on the same property. With more than 750,000 satisfied guests per year, it’s no secret as to why Lucy’s place is so popular. Her home-grown recipes and passion for food, fun and friendship are the key ingredients to what makes her restaurants unique. Lucy has surrounded herself with talented people and takes it upon herself to know every person on staff, from the general managers to the dishwashers. Lucy is committed to environmental and sustainability initiatives. She incorporates the “think globally, act locally” mantra into daily business, keeping tons of garbage out of landfills due to LuLu’s and Lucy B Goode’s recycling program. She only uses locally raised grass-fed beef and local farms in Baldwin County. Lucy is involved in various charities, organizations, special events and community activities. Lucy and her staff get involved in programs as the Baldwin County Schools’ Arts Program, the Dau-phin Island Sea Lab, Coastal Cleanup and the local Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Maize has touched many peoples’ lives in his 45 years of work. He started his career as a bellman in a hotel in College Station, PA. Many know him for his work as an Associate Professor and Director of the Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management Program at the University of Alabama, where he has been a mentor to a number of hospitality students and industry professionals. The Spirit Award has become one of the most popular awards in recent years. It is often the most touching sto-ry presented so it has a special place in some people’s hearts. This award started several years back when a nom-inee story transcended the recognition. The judging panel came to the conclusion that a separate award should be presented and that is how the Spirit Award was born. The winner of this award is given to an individual who has over-come personal struggle and has still remained dedicated to the position that he or she holds, in the process becom-ing not only an asset to the company, but an inspiration to us all. The 2013 Spirit Award Recipient was Terry Turner of the Grand Hotel of Point Clear, where she started over 26 years ago. Terry has worked in multiple areas of the hotel since starting there in 1987, working as a Banquet Server, Dining Room Attendant, Recreation Attendant, Buffet At-tendant, Steward, Back Aisle and her current role, a Silver Polisher. She makes sure all of the Hotel’s silver-plated items are kept in “Grand” condition, tirelessly cleaning and pol-ishing chafing dishes, silverware, punch bowls, heat lamps, water and coffee pitchers, coffee urns, and much more. At an early age Terry was diagnosed with epilepsy, which makes it extremely difficult to perform normal functions, but you’d never know it. Terry works very hard, monitoring everything she eats and drinks each day to reduce the change of a seizure. She requires transportation to and from work and despite all that she comes to work on time with a smile on her face. Terry has received numer-ous awards for her contributions. She won The Gold Key Award in 2001, twice in 2004, and she has been chosen as the Associate of the Month on several occasions. Terry has earned every accolade she has received, including this Spirit Award.
