BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR

TRUDI CANAVAN:

Trudi Canavan is a known writer of fantasy novels. She was born on 23 October

1969 in Melbourne, Australia. When she was little she was interested in writing, art

and music. In 1995 she founded The Telltale Art (a business specialized in

graphical design) and she started to work for the fantasy and science fiction

magazine, Aurealis. In that time she wrote in her free time. When she was 25 years

old she started to go to a few writing courses. In 1999 she received an Aurealis

award for the best story with Whispers of the Mist Children. From 2001 to 2003

she wrote her first trilogy The Black Magician trilogy. From 2005 to 2006 she

wrote her second trilogy Age of the Five. In 2009 she decided to start to write her

third trilogy The Traitor Spy trilogy (sequel of The Black Magician trilogy) and its

prequel The Magician’s Apprentice.

SUMMARY

THE MAGICIANS’ GUILD

Sonea is a poor girl with a great power. A hidden power that should never

discover, because she is a “dwell”. But one day, she found her power and she is

chased by the magicians, that is why she thinks that they want to kill her. What she

can’t imagine is that this power can be the cause that destroy all Irmandin if they

don’t teach her how to control it.

MAIN CHARACTERS

SONEA

Sonea is a poor young girl with an unknown great power. She is slender and not

very tall. Her face is thin and her hair is short, straight and dark, the same as her

eyes. Her skin is pale. She has no parents and she lives with her uncle Ranel and

her aunt Jonna. She is fair, decided and hard-working.

CERINY

Ceriny is called Cery and he is a dwell. He is Sonea’s friend. He is short and

slender. He is blond with dark eyes and his skin is pale. He is bright and his dream

is to visit all the big buildings in Irmandin.

ROTHEN

Lord Rothen is an alchemist magician. He is middle-aged and not very tall. His

hair is dark with some grey hairs. His eyes are blue and lively. He looks patient,

paternal and with good mood.

FERGUN

Lord Fergun is a warrior magician. He is young and he hates the dwells. His hair is

blond and he has it always well brushed. When he was child, he wanted to be a

soldier.

AKKARIN

Akkarin is the High Lord of the magicians’ Guild. His hair is long and dark and

always tied in a ponytail. He is silent and mysterious and he hides a great secret.

VOCABULARY:

Dwell: someone who lives in the slums.

Thief: leader of a criminal group.

Lord/Lady: all magicians are called this way. (Lord: men / Lady: women)

High Lord: is the highest title in the magicians’ Guild.

Allied Lands: continent is comprised by the countries: Kyralia, Elyne, Lonmar,

Vin and Lan.

MY PERSONAL OPINION ABOUT THE BOOK:

I really liked this book because it shows me a different and magic world. It is

enjoyable to read it and it is written in a way that you can’t stop to read.

QUOTES:

1st. - It is said in Irmandin, that the wind has a soul, and that it wails through

the narrow city streets because it is grieved by what it finds there. On the day

of the Purge it whistled amongst the swaying masts in the Marina, rushed

through the Western Gates and screamed between the buildings. Then, as if

appalled by the ragged souls it met there, it quietened to a whimper.

I chose this sentence because I think that it was poetic and beautiful.

2nd. - Sonea looked down at her hands. It worked. I broke the barrier, but

that’s not possible, unless…

I chose this sentence because I think that it’s the type of sentence that leaves you in

suspense, wishing to know what will happen later on.

3rd. – “Well, my old friend. How did it go?” Dannyl asked.

Rothen crossed his arms. “Old friend indeed!”

“Old fiend, then.” Dannyl waved a hand dismissively.

I chose these sentences because I liked the pun.
