The Magic Paintbrush
Term 6 Week 4
English This week we are going to be doing some descriptive writing. The main focus of the week will be making sure we are using punctuation correctly. We will finish the week by looking at some pictures of landscapes and having a go at writing some amazing descriptions. Monday – to use simple punctuation and add adjectives and adverbs Tuesday – extending sentences using adjectives and adverbs Wednesday – to make an adjective alphabet Thursday – gather ideas for descriptive writing Friday – write a really super descriptive passage. We’ve given you examples of the Thursday and Friday task to get you started. Can you create some writing that is even better than ours? Don’t forget to check for capital letters and full stops!
Weekly Phonics/Spellings
This week in Y2 we are focussing misspelt words.
In Y1 Kingfishers/Y2 phonics resit group we are thinking
about words ph and tch.
We’ve listed the focus words for this week on the
spellings page.
There are some ideas for Y1 activities on the phonics
page. There are now also national daily lessons on
YouTube linked to Letters and Sounds which are very
clear and helpful.
Maths
White Rose Maths Home Learning Summer 2 Week 4
(WRM Home Learning week 9) https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/z7s22sg/year-2-and-p3-
lessons/1
This week we are focussing on measuring. Lots of this
work could be done practically instead of using the
sheets.
Lesson 1: measure length (cm)
Lesson 2: compare lengths
Lesson 3: four operations with length
Lesson 4: compare mass
Friday: Either try the White Rose family learning
challenge or have a go at our investigation.
We’ve included some other sheets to work on this week,
recapping on describing movement and describing turns.
You can use these in addition to the measures work or as
an alternative.
Topic
Science: We are continuing with our work on forces. This week the key ideas that bigger pushes and pulls have
bigger effects and that pushing and pulling can make things move faster or slower. We’ve included lots of fun
practical activities in the pack.
Art: This week you could carry on your doodling work, starting to use your imagination as well as shapes and
patterns. Pretend you are Shen. What would she draw? We’ve included some ideas to get you started.
How about learning a few magic tricks?! We’ve given you some examples in the pack.
PE: Athletics:
You can use your science work to practise some of your throwing and catching skills. Remember bigger pushes
have bigger effects – who can throw the furthest? If you have enough space at home or can go out, try this
investigation – Does the length of your leg or arm affect how far you can kick a ball or hit a tennis ball?
Week beginning Monday 22nd June This is the final week learning about the Magic Paintbrush. You will find links for more activities and resources within the subject subpages on the website. We’d love to hear how you are getting on at home. If you need any help / would like any specific ideas for your children please email us. Please continue to read with Bug Club, log into
Purple Mash and practise your mental maths.

Wednesday: Learning intention: I know what an adjective is Today you are going to see how many different adjectives you can think of to create your own adjective alphabet! Start by thinking of as many as you can yourself and with your family, then you could look in books to get some more ideas. Don’t worry if you can’t fill in every letter – some are easier than others! Then try the challenge at the bottom of the page.
the slow, slimy snail
Thursday: Learning intention: I can gather ideas Today we are going to start writing some descriptions about settings. Have a look at Pobble365. There are lots of great photos to inspire you. We’ve chosen ‘The Old Railroad’ or you could find one of your own photos or a picture in a book.
Adjectives: What can you see?
What can you hear?
What can you smell?
Sentence openers:
Friday: Learning intention: to write extended descriptions with correct punctuation and interesting vocabulary

Y1 Kingfishers & Y2 Phonics Resit
Can you spot all the ph words?
This is suitable for Y1/Y2 as they are rules worth remembering.
Y2 Spellings – misspelt words

Every body everebode everybody evurebody
The _____________ were playing inside.
childen chidren children shildren

Some words are tricky to learn to spell. Sometimes using mnemonics can help you. A
mnemonic is a pattern of letters, ideas or association which helps you to remember
something. Have a look at ones below. Could you make up your own for any words that
you find really tricky?
Another useful trick is to look at the word shape. Look at this week’s spellings and also use
the common exception words list from Week 2 (p14 of Week 2 pack). Find some words you
are finding it tricky to remember. Then write them out and draw the word shapes around
them. Have a go at filling in the missing letters. Remember ot use the spelling strategies in
your spelling journal to help you too.
Science: Forces
Here are some ideas to this week.
• Drop balls from different heights and measure how high they bounce.
• Catapult plastic tubs across the room using elastic bands. What is the effect of pulling the band back different amounts or using thicker elastic bands? (Check this activity with an adult first and make sure you do it safely!)
If you have a balloon, a toy car and a straw you could try this experiment:
Some questions to think about:
What happens when you let go of the straw?
How far did the car go? Can you count the footsteps it takes to reach it?
How could you make your car go further?
How could you make your car go less far?
How does the vehicle travel differently if the balloon is blown up different amounts?
Art: doodling
Magic Tricks – Have fun!
