10.30 - 6 April - Holy Communion 09.15 - 13 April - Morning Prayer 09.15 - 20 April - Morning Prayer
09.15 - 27 April - Morning Prayer
O Lord, answer us in the day of trouble,
send us help from your holy place.
Show us the path of life,
for in your presence is joy.
Give justice to the orphan and oppressed
and break the power of wickedness and evil.
Look upon the hungry and sorrowful
and grant them the help for which they long.
Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad;
may your glory endure for ever.
Amen
Letter from Kathryn
The daffodils are out, the birds are singing, the grass needs cutting and Easter is nearly here!
What does Easter mean for you? For the Christian Church, it’s the most important festival of the year. It celebrates hope and love. It does not do so in a way that denies the suffering and evil in the world ... the presence of the cross is a witness to that. But the narrative of the resurrection is that suffering and evil do not have the last word. There are many different ways to interpret the resurrection; it is the triumph of good over evil, it is the healing of the relationship between God and humanity; it is the victory of failure; it is mystery. Where do you find yourself?
As I was writing this, I had a phone call from Gipton Children’s Centre asking for a food parcel for a woman and a child. Her husband had an accident, his life support machine is being turned off and she has no money or food.
What does hope mean in this circumstance or the many difficult circumstances we each find our self in at different stages of our lives? Hope is not a false optimism that everything will turn out all right if we close our eyes and pretend the bad things aren’t happening. Hope flickers like the light of a candle in dark times. Sometimes we can’t hold the hope ourselves but need others to do it for us … a very good argument for gathering as church. Hope offers practical help however small and insignificant that may seem.
For me Easter is the rekindling of hope.
At the vigil service in the Anglican tradition, the church is in darkness and the Deacon stands at the back with the Paschal (Easter) candle. The congregation each have a candle that is then lit from the Paschal candle as the deacon carries it from the back to the front of the church and places it in its stand.
For me this is a very powerful symbol of the fragility and the strength of hope.
Whatever your understanding of Easter, may the God of hope bless you this Easter and lead you in your journey of faith and trust.

Final Meeting of Nostalgia Spoken History Group
Food - Thursday 6 April at 13.15 in the New Room
Food affects us all – our likes, dislikes, favourite recipes, family traditions “not like mother used to make”, the stress of cooking meals or persuading others to eat. What about cost, allergies, diets, vegetarianism? Please bring and share favourite recipes and memories.
This is our last meeting of the 2016/17 season and, having met 41 times since October 2013, this will be the last Nostalgia meeting for the foreseeable future. Sadly, the group isn’t viable unless we attract a regular audience of 10 to 15.
Some meetings of our 2016/17 season have been well attended but overall numbers have declined. At our meeting on 3 November we talked about Pets and on 1 December What makes us laugh. With the help of some video footage we soon found out - Les Dawson gurning had us in stitches. We even tried to kill off the audience by showing a scene from The Goodies ‘Ecky Thump!’ which really did make a man laugh so much he actually died. (Fortunately, our audience survived.) On 5 January, a select group of us reminisced Jobs - First, Best and Worst while 2 February saw us sharing experiences of attempting or suffering D.I.Y. at some point in our lives. On 2 March, we had a great time exploring the impact Music has had on us, listening to a wide variety of each other’s ‘Desert Island Discs’ and sharing what these have meant to us.
You have made these meetings possible. We have felt honoured that so many of you have felt able to share memories; and that you brought and showed so many interesting photos, objects and items of personal and local history connected with our huge variety of topics.
For a last chance to experience Nostalgia please come along on 6 April. Everyone is welcome. We are a very relaxed group and people attend whenever they feel like it. We just enjoy ourselves, each other’s company and experiences.
We only ask for donations of £1.00 a meeting towards room hire. Volunteers donate simple refreshments on a rota system.
There is much more about the group at www.oakwoodchurch.info/nostalgia including all of our
past presentations – and of course there is lots more church and local history to browse at
www.oakwoodchurch.info/history

19.30 Saturday 4 March
The New Room filled and an attentive audience laughed and wondered at our exploits, asked lots of great questions and generously donated £168.85 towards the work of Oakwood Church at the heart of our local community. Thank you all for giving us the opportunity to share and, through sharing, re-live our happy adventure.
A Brief Summary of Oakwood Church Council Meeting
held on 23 February.
The Church priorities will be reviewed by the Leadership Team and other office holders over lunch after worship on 14 May.
The Leadership Team reported that:
▪ The format of the Broadcast was under review. ▪ There was a vacancy for a steward and a warden from
May. ▪ Oakwood’s twitter feed was proving effective. ▪ This year’s Methodist and Anglican annual meetings
would be joint on Sunday 6 April. ▪ A stewardship renewal campaign was planned for
October.
Uptake of Safeguarding training had been positive but many were still to attend and some DBS checks were outstanding.
The Community Team is arranging a fund-raising Photography Competition on 13 May – watch for more details.
Finance and resources:
▪ PCC finances were tight; reserves would have to be drawn upon.
▪ The Quinquennial Inspection of the property is due imminently.
▪ The New Room had been re-carpeted and the Resources Team was reviewing the recent environmental audit.
▪ There was an initial discussion on potential uses for a surplus balance on the Methodist accounts; the Leadership Team and Resources Team would discuss further and present proposals.
▪ There was an urgent appeal for additional circuit stewards.
A celebration of the Leeds District will take place on 1 July at Lidgett Park prior to the formation of the new Yorkshire (West) District.
Share Jesus event was noted – ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ 25 May, 4 June.
Sonia Kasibante will be ordained as Priest on 24 June at Leeds Minster (please remember Sonia in your prayers).
Churches Together in Gipton and Oakwood matters:
▪ An additional representative from Oakwood would be welcome (only 3 meetings per year).
▪ Lent Lunches will take place throughout Lent at various locations.
▪ Pentecost Praise at St Nicholas Church, Sunday 4 June at 15.00.
▪ Harvest celebration at Epiphany with the Salvation Army Band and cream tea – Sunday 15 October.
Annual Church Meetings
Both the Anglican and Methodist Annual Church Meetings will be held on Thursday 6 April at 19.00 in Church.

Monteverdi - Vespers
Saturday 8 April 2017 at 19.30 at St James’ Church, Wetherby
Conductor, John Dunford
Soloists Rebecca Lea (soprano) and Ildika Allen (soprano)
Matthew Lennox (countertenor) Ronan Busfield (tenor) and Stephen Jeffes (tenor) Alastair Ollerenshaw (bass) and Phil Wilcox (bass)
Accompanied by Wetherby Pro Musica Orchestra
Tickets £15.00 (under 18s free) available:
• by email from [email protected] • by telephone from 0786 045 4894 • from St James’ Church Office, Church Street, Wetherby,
Monday–Friday, 9 am–12 noon (telephone: 01937 583074) • or from members of the Society.
‘This will be one of the most exciting things we have ever done’, proclaimed John Dunford upon introducing Monteverdi’s Vespers to the choir!
It is a first performance for this Society and for nearly all its members. When all of the choir sing together they produce an amazing, almost ethereal wall of sound; when apart, a perfect dialogue.
‘Astonishing to think’, said one chorus member, ‘that this piece was written just over 400 years ago!’ Perhaps close your eyes for a moment as the beautiful verses are passed from one half of the choir to the other, and be transported to where Monteverdi was ‘maestro di cappella’ at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
Easter Table Cleaning
The tables at Church will be cleaned on Tuesday 11 April at 09.30 in the hall.
If you're able to help that would be wonderful, it doesn't take very long and the more people that help the less time it will take. You don't need to bring anything ..... just elbow grease.

Families come along to our Messy Church for an hour and a half of fun, food and fellowship
We usually meet once each month, usually on
Saturday afternoon from 16.00 to 17.30
We start with a variety of messy (and non-messy) activities in the hall, have a short act of worship in the New Room sharing together the good news of Jesus, and then it's back to the hall for a bite to eat.
Activities are suitable for families with children of all ages. Join together in family craft and creative activities with biblical reference.
Enjoy uninterrupted time with your children and meet new people in a safe and friendly environment.
Sessions end with a bring-and-share tea.
Messy Church is free but, if you are able, we would like you to bring a small contribution of food, for example crisps, buns, sandwiches, fruit, etc.
We hope you can join us. It's all about sharing the love of Jesus and having an amazing time together
Saturday Gathering
Alongside Messy Church we run what was previously known as ‘Friday Nite Live’
Children aged 8 to 11 (in school years 4, 5 and 6) can play pool, do crafts, play board games or table tennis mixed with activities and games that explore the Christian faith

Mary Berry's Simnel Cake Recipe
Ingredients
For the cake:
▪ 175g soft butter or margarine, plus extra for greasing
▪ 175g light muscovado sugar
▪ 3 eggs
▪ 175g self-raising flour
▪ 175g sultanas
▪ 90g currants
▪ 90g glacé cherries, quartered, rinsed, and dried
▪ 30g candied peel, roughly chopped
▪ Grated zest of 1 large lemon
▪ 1 tsp ground mixed spice
For the decorating:
▪ 50 g almond paste
▪ 2 tbsp apricot jam
▪ 1 egg white
▪ Deep 18 cm (7 in) round
loose-bottomed cake tin
Method ▪ Roll out one-third of the almond paste. Using the base of the
cake tin as a guide, cut out an 18cm round. ▪ Grease the cake tin, line the bottom and side with greaseproof
paper.
▪ Combine all the cake ingredients in a bowl. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Spoon half of the cake mixture into the
prepared tin and smooth the surface. Top with the round of almond paste.
▪ Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface.
▪ Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C/gas mark 2 for 2¼ quarter hours or until golden brown and firm to the touch.
▪ Cover the top of the cake with greaseproof paper if it is browning too quickly. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely.
▪ Warm the jam and use to brush the top of the cake. ▪ To decorate the cake, roll out half of the remaining almond paste
and use the tin to cut out an 18cm round. Put on top of the jam and crimp the edges. Roll the remaining almond paste into 11 even-sized balls. Place around the edge of the cake, attaching
them with egg white. ▪ Brush the tops of the balls and the almond paste with egg white.
Place under a hot grill for one to two minutes, until the balls are golden.
Christian Aid Week 2017
Nejebar, with her sons Hinayat (left) and Sudai, outside their home in Agios Andreas, Greece
Christian Aid Week:
Standing with Refugees Like Nejebar
Nejebar and her family have fled horrors in Afghanistan, where her husband was threatened with torture and death for being a government worker.
It is better to die in a camp than to die in a war. That’s what Nejebar thinks.
It’s better to travel for months, in rain and snow, with young children. To walk until you injure your feet. To risk your children’s lives in a plastic dinghy. And to leave everything you know behind.
When the alternative is fear and terror, almost anything is better. When the alternative is bombs, bullets and war, almost anything is better.
Fleeing Horrors
Nejebar’s husband Noor was a teacher in Afghanistan. Imagine the horror the family felt when the Taliban announced they would kill anyone, like Noor, who worked for the government. Imagine how they felt when the Taliban carried out that threat on another family member, taking out his eyes before killing him.
Almost anything has to be better than that.
But now they’ve arrived in Greece, all they have is a tent. They have no other protection against wind and rain. There’s no school for their five children. And they have no certainty or clear idea of what will happen to them now. They thought they would stay here for 10 days but it’s already been six months and there’s no end in sight.
Nejebar’s husband Noor describes their initial reaction to arriving in the camp in Greece: ‘It was like suicide for us. But we took the decision that it is better to die here than to die there from war.’
You’ve helped us be there for refugees since 1945. We won’t turn our backs on refugees like Nejebar now.
Christian Aid was set up by British churches in 1945 to support the hundreds of thousands of refugees who had lost their homes and possessions in the Second World War. We launched Christian Aid Week in 1957 to raise funds for vital work like this that was still continuing in the long running aftermath of the war.
For 60 years, tens of thousands of dedicated volunteers have come together for Christian Aid Week each May to raise vital money for those most in need.
Thanks to you, we’ve been there for refugees, providing essential food, shelter and legal assistance. Your support is more vital now than ever. Let’s not turn our
backs on refugees now.
This Christian Aid Week, 14-20 May, our church is continuing to walk with refugees by holding a door-to-door collection. Last year we raised almost £2,500!
We’re not going to turn our backs on refugees now.
Speak to Jeanette Shipley, Telephone 0113 265 0883 to join a team of 25 volunteer collectors.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK SUNDAY 14 TO SATURDAY 20 MAY
Our Digital World is Ending
Between February 2011 and our final meeting on 22 March 2017, the group met 35 times to air concerns and enjoy presentations, demonstrations and collective knowledge sharing.
We started because some of us had learned to enjoy and exploit the benefits of our digital world but most of us didn’t grow up in one. Some of us were baffled, frustrated and even angered by the deluge of new technology and clunky, seemingly risky, on-line ‘services’ that were being foisted upon us. Or aims were simple:
• To get to grips with digital technologies that can or will make a real difference to our lives.
• To learn enough to feel comfortable ignoring those technologies which need not impact our lives.
We have tackled a huge range of topics - as diverse as digital and cable TV; digital cameras; eBooks; emails, smartphones and tablets; on-line shopping banking and government; safeguarding our files and online presence; preserving memories; social networking; video editing and conferencing; even online project collaboration, writing and publishing.
We began in a limited analogue TV, Windows XP, 2G Mobile world. Six years on we have Google, Apple, Microsoft, Sky and Amazon dominating the world market all selling us ‘fashionable’, hugely powerful and relatively intuitive digital devices and an incredibly wide range of usable ‘Apps’.
Over our last two winter seasons attendance has steadily fallen, suggesting audience members have either found a level of comfort in our digital world, or made rational decisions to opt out of it as much as they possibly can.
The group seems to have run its natural course and, with many fewer than 10-15 attendees at each meeting, it is no longer viable.
It’s been great fun; a genuine pleasure. Thank you all for your support.
And if you get stuck, well you know where to find me…

had its own real life ‘Good Samaritan’ experience recently,
when a young man was brought in from the streets in need
of medical attention. Robbed of his money and essential
medication, the man was found beaten and lying dazed in
one of the nearby streets.
Two young passers-by were true ‘Good Samaritans’ and
brought him to the café to ask for help. The Café manager,
Pauline, saw that he needed medical attention immediately
and quickly summoned a taxi, paying for the fare to the
local hospital.
