tHE Big intErviEwSince establishing himself on the international scene with Habitat ’67 while still in his 20s, Moshe Safdie has gone on to enjoy one of architecture’s most storied careers. In an exclusive interview, LEAF’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner looks back across a portfolio of projects that has included the United States Institute of Peace Headquarters, Marina Bay Sands and Khalsa Heritage Centre; discusses where modernism sits within today’s architectural milieu; and outlines what’s still left to be done.

ConstruCtionThe discussion of architecture as it applies to natural disasters is too often limited to aftermath rebuilding projects. How proactive must architects be in preparing for worst case scenarios and to what extent should these measures dictate one’s designs in high-risk locales? Pritzker laureate Shigeru Ban, Michael Berkowitz, president of the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities initiative, and architect Effie Bouras, co-curator of Considering the Quake: Seismic Design on the Edge, join the debate.

Museum extensions are among the most sensitive commissions in architecture, often involving substantial amendments to well-established and much loved public spaces, and the walking of a tight rope between traditionalist and contemporary camps. We profile some of the more successful attempts and speak to leading architects about overcoming these challenges, including Søren Øllgaard of Henning Larsen Architects and MUMA’s Stuart McKnight.

The decision to scrap plans for what was to be the architectural centrepiece of Tokyo 2020, Zaha Hadid’s Olympic stadium, has drawn both praise and criticism from various quarters, with Richard Rodgers accusing Japan of having “lost its nerve”. But at a time of growing suspicion surrounding public spending on costly mega projects and a general move away from statement architecture, how much scope remains for iconic stadia construction? Architects from Populous, Herzog & de Meuron and Foster + Partners join the debate. rEgionAl FoCusWith president Xi Jinping calling for an end to “weird architecture”, has China lost its appetite for ambitious architectural undertakings from overseas architects? Zaha Hadid Architects director Patrik Schumacher certainly believes so, citing a move to promote local talent and the tightening of purse strings as economic growth slows. For so long a

sand pit for international mega projects, to what extent do opportunities still exist and where can they be found? Schumacher, local academics and domestic and international studios join the debate.

spECiAl rEportWith Raad Studio launching a Kickstarter campaign to help finance construction of the Lowline park in New York and the Luchtsingel bridge from Rotterdam studio ZUS already completed following an extensive fundraising campaign, to what extent does crowdfunding have the potential to transform the way in which public infrastructure projects are conceived, approved and financed? We meet theorists and architects to discuss whether this might be the dawn of increased public engagement with decisions surrounding the built environment, or the transformation of architecture into a mere popularity contest.

dEsign The global wellness industry is now valued at well over $3 trillion, with an increasing amount of focus and money being invested into the spaces within which spa and treatment centres sit. What are the current trends in wellness aesthetics and how can architects and interior designers best serve this fast growing market segment? We meet partners from HWO, GA Design and WATG to find out.

tECHnology Virtual reality has the potential to transform the manner in which architects envision and articulate their projects, allowing for a full walk through of a building before ground has even broken. But to what extent does such technology transcend mere gimmicky and does it truly go beyond modelling programmes already established on the market? We don our goggles with designer Olivier Demangel, Initian’s Andy Millns and Immersion CEO Piotr Baczynski.

ligHtingHealthcare premises are very demanding environments for lighting planning. The wide variety of tasks being performed and the vast differentials in physical abilities of those using the premises demands a number of different lighting solutions. What role can illumination play in improving wellbeing and how are designers and architects facing this challenge? We meet partners form RTKL, SATA and Oglo to find out.

MAtEriAlsFrom PVC foil to translucent polyethylene fabric, imaginative use of tensioned textile membranes has created some of the most striking building facades in recent memory. We take a look at a selection of the finest examples, and investigate the extent to which such techniques can transcend mere aesthetics, with Mahmoud Bodo Rasch, and partners at C.F. Møller and Kengo Kuma.
