EDITORIAL

We are delighted to report that two Bozeat residents received awards in the

Queen’s birthday honours list this year . Congratulations to them both.

• Rachel Mallows, director of the Mallows Company and Made In

Northamptonshire, received an MBE for services to business and

entrepreneurship, and we have just heard that Rachel has been

appointed as one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Northamptonshire.

• Theresa Wright received a British Empire Medal for services to

Gosset Ward, Northampton General Hospital

Further details on page 27 and the back page.

Bozeat Village Store (previously known as the Paper Shop) will now be ‘Nisa local -

Bozeat’ and will have many special offers and promotions. As it is our only remaining

general store please do use the shop, it stocks a very wide range of goods and we are

assured that the prices will be very competitive.

The Red Lion will also see changes in the near future - watch this space!

Hopefully the new speed monitor will help reduce speeding in the village. It is

constantly moved and the analysis results reveal that many cars travel in excess of

40 mph - see the Parish Council website - www.bozeatparishcouncil.gov.uk

If you are aware of anyone in Bozeat and Easton Maudit who doesn’t get a copy of

Bozeat Matters please let us know.

BOZEAT POST OFFICE

Sav at the village shop is funded for just four hours per week from the Post Office but, as a service to the village, is opening for eight hours:

Monday and Tuesday from 9 am - 1 pm

Despite extensive talks with the Post Office by Sav and the Parish Council the hours remain the same.

The Post Office has always been a vital community amenity and if you would like to see it open longer during the week either sign the petition at the shop or email your support to [email protected], putting PO in the subject line and enter your name, address and post-code in the body of the email.

HANDBELL RINGERS Helen Manktelow, 665113

The Handbell ringers have not been meeting regularly since Christmas but we did have one gathering in July to say farewell to Barbara from Selby Gardens who is moving away from the village and will be sorely missed by us. Not only has she been a reliable ringer but she has hosted our practices at her home & provided copious amounts of very good tea. Our ringing was rather rusty but we enjoyed our get together & said our farewells, helped along by more tea and a very nice cake provided by another of our ringers, Elaine. Best wishes & good luck in your new home Barbara from all the ringers.

ANIMALS IN NEED RESCUE HOME

If you have any old towels, blankets, food, bric-a-brac or tombola/raffle prizes that would be suitable for Animals in Need, please telephone Maggie on 663313, who is happy to collect them from you and deliver them to the home in Little Irchester. Also now taking used postage stamps.

RAISING FUNDS FOR RESCUED ANIMALS

Jane at Springvale Farm, London Road, Bozeat has a collection of home-made scented candles, soaps, wicker hearts, cards, pendants, bracelets and many other unusual craft objects.

Very reasonable prices. Some can be made to order.

All money raised goes to support our rescued animals – including Shetland ponies, donkeys, a llama, alpacas, a variety of pigs and many more as we do not receive any outside support of any kind. (Donations of unwanted windfall apples or other unwanted fruit and veg gratefully received – the pigs are pretty indifferent to variety!)

Feel free to drop in on Saturday or Sunday from 10.00 to 16.00 to browse or buy whenever the craft sandwich board is on the verge outside the gate.

FUTURE OF THE VILLAGE HALL

You are invited to a public meeting to be held at the Community Hall, Allens Hill on Saturday 10th September from 9.30 to 10.30 am to consider the future of this Hall. Complimentary tea, coffee and bacon rolls will be available to those attending.

Due to the present condition of the building urgent decisions need to be made regarding its long term use as a community venue. All Villagers, especially current users of the Hall, are urged to attend to hear about the issues being faced and to have their say regarding the future of the Hall.

Do not leave it to someone else. This is an issue for the whole village if you value your Community Hall you need to participate.

BOZEAT ENVIRONMENTAL CARE GROUP Diane West 663342

The Northamptonshire Campaign to Protect Rural England have granted a Litter Heroes Award Certificate to Bozeat. We were highly commended for services to their community and countryside in the fight against litter.

The village has looked cleaner since the "Clean for the Queen" get together, so we hope it can stay like that. Thank you all.

Earlier we dealt with some fly-tipping on old Wollaston Road which included a large mirror, lorry exhaust pipe, vacuum cleaner and a large holdall with "stolen" worth-less stuff. We found a £5 note on The Flat (to Charity) and a Student Card in Church Lane, hopefully returned to owner.

Recently we have swept the High Street, past the Old School and into Camden Square. We collected 8 bags of rubbish. Very recently we swept, cut back and cleared Fish Alley (an ongoing job). Lots of people in the village do good work frequently so thank you to the unsung heroes.

We meet on the Village Green at 2.30 pm on the first Thursday of each month; bags and pickers provided! Please join us:- Ist September; 6th October; 3rd November; Ist December 2016 and 5th January 2017..

be sent out on a regular basis to the school, but the whole thing will now be overseen by Global Care.

It took a long time to make this decision, but we do feel that it is the right thing. The payments to the school will be more regular, and the hands on approach from Global Care will be more regular that we can now offer.

We thank you for your support over the years. We will still be able to be in touch with the leaders of the school.

Please keep supporting the school, last year the Kenyan government sent in troops to take back some of the school grounds, and demolished part of the school. This is to do with reclaiming land near to the railway track that runs through the Kibera Slum. After the demolition, the local community were able to make sure that the school kept on running, and Global Care are having a huge impact in the school compound now, by putting another story onto the school building that was not demolished. The school continued to teach through the chaos.

Lots of life stories continue from the school, life is so hard, and the children are all from the Kibera slum, all of them are Aids orphans, losing at least one parent to the disease. The teachers do a really good job for little money under very hard conditions.

Any help we can give them, is truly appreciated and really needed.

Forthcoming events:

• Sunday 25th September from 2 pm at Sue and Robin’s - 3 Brookside, Bozeat.

An afternoon to come along and have a glass of wine and nibbles, there will be a small raffle. No specific charge, but donations welcomed for Changing Lives in Kenya – Support Group.

• Friday October 21st at 7.30 pm Church Hall Bozeat - The Windmill Singers are holding a concert for us.

There will be a bar and tickets will be on sale nearer to the time. It should be a great evening.

If you would like to get involved in any way with the CLIK support group, or talk to me about any of the issues about the school or sponsorship changes, please call me, or come along to the afternoon fundraiser on September 25th.

Thanks, Sue Wagstaff

CHANGING LIVES IN KENYA - CLIK – Support Group Sue Wagstaff 665537

At our last AGM the trustees of “Changing Lives in Kenya” decided to close the registered charity and instead become the “Changing Lives in Kenya” support group. This will mean that the children who were sponsored through CLIK will still get their Sponsorship through Global Care, a great small registered charity based in Coventry. Our sponsorship is being managed by Global Care, and the accountability of where the money goes - which has always been so important to us, will be managed by Global Care.

Paul Rowell came to our AGM and visits the project on a regular basis. We feel that as we are no longer able to travel to the school as we used to, it is a much better thing that we hand over to a charity who can do this on our behalf. Global Care are able to feed back to individual sponsors about their sponsored children in a much more efficient way than we are now able to do.

Our primary focus in our forthcoming fundraising will be the Feeding programme. We will still try to feed all of the children (over 400 of them) every day during the school holidays. The children still receive porridge for their breakfast each day.

Global Care have given us an assurance that any money raised by CLIK will be sent specifically for Spurgeon’s Academy in the Kibera. The funds we are able to raise will

WINDMILL SINGERS Roy Gatehouse, 01604 890739, Anna Denny, 01933 663375

Since our last report, we have in June sung at a wedding at St Mary’s and also the annual Summer Songs of Praise at the Chapel. Then in July, another wedding at St Mary’s, and then our annual Charity Concert at the Church Hall. From September 6th we will be rehearsing old and several new items in readiness for the various concerts and weddings coming up soon and through to the Christmas Concert, and hopefully carols.

Future dates for our 2016 diary, which we hope you will be able to support:

Tue 6th Sept 7-30 pm Choir back from Summer Break for rehearsal

Sat 1st Oct 7-30 pm Concert at the Baptist Chapel, Earls Barton

Fri 21st Oct 7-30 pm Concert for CLIK at Bozeat Church Hall

Sat 10th Dec 7-30 pm Annual Christmas Concert at Bozeat Church Hall

We hope to also have carols in the pub in December (this item still to be arranged/agreed).

We are also singing at a wedding on Saturday 24th September at 2-00 pm at Easton Maudit Church for Sally & partner.

We are always welcoming new members, especially for our Tenor and Bass sections, (“so come on folks don’t be shy, and give it/us a try”), and of course we welcome anyone for our Soprano and Alto sections too.

We are also hoping on September 6th to see the return of previous members, in the way of two ladies and one gentleman to our fold. So if you are reading this and are still not too sure, you do not have to be able to read music, nor take any audition. We also operate a four weeks come and give it a try policy, so you can come to rehearsals and under no pressure, you can listen to us, or better still join in, to see if it’s your thing or not, at no obligation, so just turn up and enjoy our friendly welcome. If you require, give ring us (Roy or Anna) for more information.

We meet at The Little Chapel (Independent Wesleyan Chapel), Dychurch Lane, Bozeat, NN29 7JP on Tuesday evenings at 7-30 pm for a couple of hours rehearsal, in school term times (about 37/39 weeks per year).

We hear of crime reports showing that advice given on the security of your home, cars and garden sheds is not always acted upon, so we feel the need to keep repeating our messages.

For security at your home always keep front and back doors locked. Put the chain on the front door before opening it to a caller, it is an aid to preventing unwanted callers from forcing their way in.

Good weather encourages us to open our windows and open windows are an attraction to burglars. Close all windows when you go out. If your window has to be open then ensure it is a small opening and secure the window with a locked-in position system thus preventing movement of the window. Cars get stolen with ease, as their keys were ‘fished’ through open windows.

Do inform the Police about suspicious incidents in your neighbourhood, and inform your neighbours too. The telephone numbers shown here are for your assistance.

Northamptonshire Police 101 ~ Calls can be directed to local Police Stations or the Safer Community Teams. For Bozeat, Ask for Wellingborough Rural Safer Community Team.

Emergency calls only 999

Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 (you do not have to give your name and address)

Important information for all mobile phone owners

Fraudsters are impersonating telephone service providers and contacting their clients offering a phone upgrade on a low monthly payment contract. The fraudsters will glean all your personal and financial details which will then be used to contact a genuine phone provider to order a new mobile phone. The fraudsters will either

intercept delivery of the new mobile phone before it reaches the victim’s address (your address), or order the handset in your name to a different address.

Never provide your personal information to a third party from an unsolicited communication. Obtain the genuine number of the organisation being represented and verify the legitimacy of the communication. Remember ~ If the offer is too good to be true, do not go for it.

If you have provided personal information and you are concerned that your identity may be compromised, consider Cifas Protection Registration. Go to https://www.cifas.org.uk in order to view a video about your personal information.

If you have been a victim of fraud then report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go to http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

PLANNING APPLICATIONS FOR 75 HOUSES OFF EASTON LANE and 36 HOUSES OFF HILLSIDE CLOSE

August 2016 update

The first planning application by Gladman was reference WP/14/00369/OUT. This was dismissed by the High Court in Birmingham in February 2016 and Gladman are now out of time to take this to the Court of Appeal. This application is thus now finished.

The second planning application reference WP/14/00794/OUT was due to be heard at a Planning Hearing by the Planning Inspectorate following Gladman’s appeal at the beginning of August but Gladman withdrew from the appeal at the end of June, although they did not state their reason. This planning application is thus also finished.

On the surface this looks to be good news but Gladman are notorious for not giving up and we should not be surprised if they start afresh and submit a whole new planning application for this site in the near future. We hope we are wrong but this has been their tactic in numerous other locations throughout the country and we should not become complacent that this is over.

The second planning application for Hillside Close reference WP/14/00235/OM was heard by the planning committee at Wellingborough Council on 13th April 2016 and was refused planning permission. The applicant has six months from this date in which to appeal against the decision, which is mid September. We have yet to hear if the applicant intends to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate but will keep you informed.

THANK YOU to David Brown for his front cover pictures of the planters near

the village sign on London Road at the bottom of Easton Lane.

The flowers are supplied by members of the W.I.

WHAT IS A ’PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP’? A Very Brief Guide

Wollaston Surgery, 163 London Road, Wollaston & Bozeat Surgery, Brookside, Bozeat

The first PPG was set up on the 30 November 1972

Despite their development, PPGs are still not very well-known and most people do not know what they do. This brief guide explains how PPGs work and what their role and function may be.

It is important to note that there is no single or definitive model for a PPG. Each group is different. This is considered to be a good thing, in that it means that each group can evolve and develop according to the wishes of the patients in each practice - i.e. The Practice Population. PPGs tend to be set up by Practices but, over time, they are usually run by patients. Typically, they will have a committee that meets regularly to give the PPG some leadership and a sense of direction. The PPG should work closely with the Practice and it is normal for members of the Practice Team, including General Practitioners to be part of the PPG. PPGs are not set up to be ‘Forums for Moaners’ nor ‘Doctors Fan Clubs’ They are a route for Patients to advise and inform the Practice on what matters most to them and to help identify solutions to problems. Members of PPGs should think about the wider patient interest and not just their own personal concerns when serving on the PPG. Every PPG should be clear about what it is there for and what it hopes to achieve. It should have well thought out core objectives so that if someone asks what the Group does, there is a clear answer. These goals and aspirations need to be realistic and achievable because the PPG is run by volunteers. In most instances, the PPG will work in partnership with the Practice (and significant other partners) and, in that way, it can achieve a great deal more. As noted above the activities of PPGs vary because they develop and evolve to meet the local needs of their Practice Population and may, for example, include any or all of the following: Improving communication by assisting in the production of newsletters or leaflets that provide patients with information about their health and how to access the available services. Together with members of the Practice Team and other significant NHS and/or Local Authority partners, participate as appropriate in the organisation of health promotion events, so that patients can have a really good understanding of their health and how best to look after it. Acting as a ‘Critical Friend’ to the Practice, by helping it appreciate and understand what patients are thinking and are saying about issues, such as, opening hours, telephone systems, requests for home visits, delays in being given an appointment, seeing their favourite GP, seeing their favourite Practice Nurse, repeat prescriptions and the range and type of services provided within the Practice. Helping to fill some of the gaps in services by signposting patients to available support or providing services such as patient libraries, volunteer transport, befriending and support groups. Fundraising to support the work of the PPG and to improve the care that is available to patients of the Practice. Influencing the services that are provided, and where they are provided, by taking part in what are called commissioning decisions: this means that services can be developed in the way that is best for patients. Undertaking appropriate surveys or research to find out what matters to patients and discussing the findings with the Practice. Choose the level

1st BOZEAT BROWNIES

In the summer term, we have had lots of fun out of doors (when the weather allowed)! We played Rounders, Cricket, and even learnt Archery. We had a really fun evening with our Brownie friends from Irchester, Wollaston, and Grendon when we hosted Brownie Revels in June.

This term we achieved our Road Safety badge aided by a visit from PCSO Mike Bowes, have started work on the Gardening badge and 7 Brownies proudly made their Promise in front of their families. Well done everyone!

We meet on Wednesdays (term time), 6.15-7.45pm at Bozeat School. If you’re a girl aged 7-10, come and join in!

For more information contact Ann Turner on 01933 715303 / 07460729222 (evenings only) or [email protected].

WOLLASTON GUIDE UNIT AND SENIOR SECTION

What an exciting year we have had up to July enjoying activities and badge work. The girls have been camping, enjoying a trip out to celebrate the 100 years of Senior Section and also 100 years of Guiding in Wellingborough. Parents have joined in a ‘Let’s Celebrate’ Tea Party where four new Guides were enrolled and seven of the Senior Section received the Baden-Powell Challenge. The Senior Section designed and built mobile phone boxes with the help of a parent to keep our phones in during meetings - this completed their first Octant in the Look Wider programme.

A relaxing break now before we start back to enjoy two more weekends away and lots of activities and badge work.

Guides (10 years) and Senior Section (14½ years) meet on a Friday at Wollaston Village Hall 7–9 pm. If you would like to join us and for more details, please contact Barbara on 663756 Sarah on 07795 945222.

BOZEAT LUNCH CLUB Shirley O’Neill, 743321

I am happy to say that things are looking up at the Lunch Club. After my plea in the last Bozeat Matters for a replacement cook I am delighted to report that Phillipa Uzzle, Chef, has volunteered to cook for us every fortnight and she starts on 29th June. So that's one worry out of the way. Bless you Phillipa!!

Several of our members had a lovely day out with lunch at the Foxton Locks and then on to the open air theatre where they saw a very good production of West Side Story. Voted a great day!

We enjoy our regular weekly Wednesday meetings and would very much like to share these with many more people – be they Bozeat residents or from surrounding districts.

To this end we have decided to have a LUNCH CLUB OPEN DAY where we will be happy to chat over a cuppa and show what we do – or don't do! – each week.

Also, if you would like to join us for a lovely two course lunch that would only cost you £6.50. How's that for a bargain? Please contact me so that I can book a lunch for you.

Please come and join us on Wednesday 21st September at 11 am at the Little Chapel, Dychurch Lane Bozeat. I'm sure you will enjoy the experience and maybe we'll see you for future meetings.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me for any further information.

WOLLASTON CRICKET CLUB David Ward, 663951

In the previous edition our wish was to see an improvement in the weather and at the time of writing (end of July) it has certainly been more favourable and the pitches are getting dryer and outfields faster.

All three senior teams are handily placed in the top half of their respective divisions and there have been several stand-out highlights so far along the way. The First Eleven's win over Peterborough (WCC 214 - Peterborough 96 all out), the Seconds nail-biting victory against O.N 3rds (O.Ns 117 -WCC 118 for 9) and the Thirds 5 wicket triumph at Old Wellingburian 2nds are just three results which will linger in the cricket memory bank.

We have so far had three centuries from our new recruits of 2016. Aussie Jack Webster 117 not out for the First Eleven, Ajay Momi 104 for the Seconds and Cameron Monteith 107 for the Thirds - a great start for all three newcomers. Hopefully a portent for future seasons.

The Under 13s have had a tremendous season and have already won the Higham & District league for the second year on the trot. At the time of writing they have reached the semi-final of the Cup competition and if successful will be double winners once again. A remarkable achievement.

We obviously have strength in depth with the Under 9s winning not just one tournament this season, but two!

The U15s finished in fifth place and the U11s in the lower end of their division but both teams were very unlucky with cancelled games due to the wet June.

Our U19s are just one game away from a Finals Day at the County Ground but unfortunately the fixture is scheduled after this edition deadline. We wish them retrospective luck!

Congratulations to all our Junior players along with thanks to all our hard working coaches.

Our Fun Day in early July was blessed with lovely weather and a good time was had by all.

Don't forget our popular TEN/10 Day on Sunday August 28th, Under 9’s Tournament on Sunday September 11th and President's Day on Sunday September 18th when our President's finest will take on the Chairman's cream of the crop to battle it out for bragging rights over the next twelve months.

Saturday October 1st is our Annual Dinner and Presentation Night at the Commonwealth Centre. If you would like a ticket please contact a Club member or email to: [email protected]

For results, fixtures, scorecards and further information and details of the Club check our website at wollastoncc.co.uk

RURAL CRIME

If you would like to find out more about our Rural Action Strategy, please visit the website at http://www.northamptonshireruralaction.co.uk/

The Alpha Course ~ ever wondered what it's all about?

Over two million people in the UK and thirteen million worldwide have now attended an Alpha course, an opportunity to explore the meaning of life, running in tens of thousands of locations across the world. Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over eleven thought-provoking weekly sessions, with a day away.

The WEBS (Wollaston, Easton Maudit, Bozeat, Strixton) Alpha 2016 begins on 27th September but if you haven’t thought of doing Alpha or would like to know what it’s all about, why not come to the free introduction supper on 20th September at 7.15 for 7.30 pm and finishing at 9.30 pm in the newly refurbished St Mary’s Church in Wollaston?

There will be a two course meal plus coffee and mints. After supper, sit back and enjoy a short talk entitled, “Is there more to life than this?” and an opportunity to hear from some people who have recently completed Alpha.

The supper is free of charge, but to help the catering team, it would be useful to know if you intend to come. Please also let us know if you have special dietary requirements. To book your place for the free supper, or for more information, please contact Chris and Linda Brett at Bozeat Vicarage on 01933 665831 or [email protected]

OPEN CHURCH

St Mary’s Church Bozeat is open on Wednesday afternoons 1.30 – 4.30 pm until 26th October

* Feel free to come in and look around

* Be undisturbed for quiet reflection

* Someone will be available to listen, chat or to pray with you

POLICE COMMISSIONER: Stephen Mold is the Police & Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire.

We’ve had a great summer with several highlights including Simon Harding being baptised in the car park outside the Church Community Hall one sunny Sunday in July after which Simon shared why it was important to him to be baptised. This wonderful event was followed up a fortnight later by the Fun Day at The Vicarage which attracted over 100 villagers, their friends and families. A big thank you to all who did so much to make it such a great event.

At the time of writing this piece we are looking forward to hosting Café Connec+ions at The Vicarage in August, making use of the garden and the Scout tent while numbers attending are down due to summer holidays. We will be back at the Church Community Hall on September 4th and right through to the end of the year.

There is also plenty to look forward to. The local Alpha Course starts on September 20th with the free of charge Introduction Supper for folk who are interested to find out what Alpha is all about without committing to doing the course. This year we will be meeting in the newly refurbished St Mary’s Church Wollaston. More details are elsewhere in this issue.

Our first ever Family Light Party will be on October 30th from 4 – 6.30 pm in the Church Community Hall. Halloween can focus our minds on darkness and horror so we will be holding a party with a light theme including games and activities to introduce the idea of Jesus as the Light for the whole World (John 8: 12), banishing darkness and fear. Please call Emma (07496 359426) or Jo (07906 206680) or Chris and Linda (01933 665831) for more information or to say you would like to come.

For more information about Café Connec+ions and associated activities please speak to Chris and Linda Brett at The Vicarage, or give us a call on 665831 or ‘like’ us at: facebook.com/bozeatcafeconnections or visit our website: www.bozeatcafeconnections.com or why not come to Café Connec+ions one 1st or 3rd in the month Sunday morning 9.30 – 11.30? You would be very welcome.

As you may have seen from previous editions of Bozeat Matters, for some time now, on the 2nd Sunday of each month is RISE - Relaxed Interactive Service for Everyone.

This includes hymns or worship songs which tend to be more modern and informal than those used in our other services and which lend themselves to more informal accompaniments. It would be great to have more musicians accompanying our singing at these services.

If there are people who have instruments (or even if you don't - a loan might be possible) who would like to know about playing with the Music Group at these more relaxed times of worship, I should be very pleased for you to contact me or anyone else connected with St. Mary's Church.

EARLS BARTON RALLY & COUNTRY FAYRE Pat Conroy, 663454

The Rally will take place on the August Bank Holiday weekend, the 27th, 28th and 29th August 2016.

We are hoping that this year the weather will be kind to us. After two years of being rained off on the Monday it would be good for all our entrants, as well as the public, if we had a decent weekend. Even though we can do nothing about the weather we have still managed to enjoy the Monday and a large percentage of our entrants have stayed and supported us.

We have The Jez Avery Stunt Show in the ring, which will be great fun. In the Country area we have the Viking Battle enactment and many interesting woodland and country exhibits, along with a display of Gipsy Caravans.

As well as the usual trade and craft exhibits we have a lot more attractions for the chil-dren, including water Zorbing and a miniature crazy golf course. There is the usual amusement rides at the Fair and Punch & Judy. Sheridan the Sheepdog will keep you entertained as you walk round the field.

Our thanks go to the Whites’ for the continued use of the field and their support during the event. Also thanks must go to all the people, too numerous to mention individually, who give up their time to make the rally such a great success.

So please enjoy your time with us and if there are any problems please do not hesitate in approaching a committee member for assistance.

If you have any queries or would like to lend a hand with the organisation please contact Pat Conroy on 01933 663454

ST MARY’S CHURCH COMMUNITY HALL George Sharratt, 663029

During the year the Hall supports a wide variety of well supported charity and community events and a lot of money is raised for good causes. Over the last two years we have helped to organise a Barn Dance to raise funds for CLIK (Changing lives in Kenya). This year the Windmill Singers will be putting on a fundraising concert on Friday 21st October 7.30 pm. Do make a note in your diary and look out for the posters nearer the time for further details.

The programme of planned maintenance continues and as usual my thanks go to all those who continue to help support and maintain the Hall. We are continuing to work together with the Parish Council to find the best way forward of securing the longer term future of the hall. How we progress this will depend largely on the support we receive from the community. A public meeting, to discuss the issues, is planned for the 10th September 9.30 – 10.30 am. Light refreshments will be provided and all are welcome to attend.

If you wish to book the Hall or a meeting room for an event or would like further infor-mation or a booking form please contact Pat Taylor 01933 – 664838.

COFFEE MORNING

There is a Coffee Morning held every Thursday morning at The Little Chapel from 10 am to 11.30 am.

Everyone is welcome to drop in for a coffee and chat.

We look forward to meeting new people to the village.

BOZEAT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Carol Fearnley 663282

‘Thank You’ to those of you who attended our Coffee Morning on 21st May, as the proceeds enabled us to give £100 to the Village Hall Roof Fund and £200 to the Blood Bikers c/o Kamran ~ who extends a ‘thank you’ for the £84 you donated into his collection box on the day.

The plants in the two new Flower Planters beside the Village Sign (at the bottom of Easton Lane) are being supplied by Bozeat W.I, and we will try to have different displays throughout the year.

For our May meeting we were guests of Wollaston W.I whose speaker was Ian Rowe talking about the time he competed in the Atlantic Odyssey Challenge. Ian referred to the W.I along side his challenge, as it takes courage to row across an ocean and it takes courage to hold a W.I role. His rowing was an adventure from which he learnt much, and he considered being a member of the W.I can be an adventure rather than just staying at home. We all experience courage and fear, and as a team we work together ~ as he did with five other men to row the Atlantic in under 30 days. Ian gave us a graphic explanation about the on-board yellow bucket (the loo), of how the flying fish attacked them while rowing, the spicy packet food they lived on, the wonderful sunrises and sunsets, the terrible high waves, the tiny space for sleeping, and how the monotonous sight of the sea played with his mind. We were shown pictures of tanned bodies, blisters on heels and hands, and the tiny vessel in which these men spent two hours rowing and two hours sleeping throughout the day and night ~ until the boat capsized on day 28.

We say ‘Thank You’ to Sheila & Renee for their delicious refreshments and the organising of our June Member’s Evening when we made a birthday card for The Queen, ~ tested our knowledge with a Royal Quiz, ~ listened to a poem by Agnes entitled Elizabeth’s 90 years, ~ and sang Songs from the Ages accompanied on the piano by Marian. An evening to remember.

Ampthill W.I joined our July meeting and we were entertained by Lynne Chapman with her talk on Bellydance Costumes & History. From a young age Lynne was interested in being a bellydancer, and for the past twenty years she has demonstrated this type of dance and spoken of its history. The dance movements are less ‘belly’ and more ‘hip’ movements, are coy not sexy, and very good exercise for the body. Years ago when young Asian girls danced they would be given coins as praise, these coins were sewn onto their costumes. Lynne gave us details about various costumes which were distributed amongst us for viewing. Originally Indian bellydancers were fully clothed in modest tops and long skirts with a scarf tied tightly around the hips to emphasize the hips when dancing ~ the bare midriff is an American theme.

Our activities for the next three months are shown in the Diary Section, and if one of our Speakers’ topic interests you please come and enjoy the evening at a cost of £4, and 50p for refreshments ~ we look forward to meeting you.

BOZEAT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL & NURSERY Gurjit Virk 01933 663840 [email protected]

I am astounded to how quickly this year has flown by! This year there have been so many highlights (in fact, too many to mention) and we have finished the year on an absolute high too. It is always good to stop and reflect on all that has been achieved. Looking back over the year there have been so many things that will not be forgotten and no doubt everyone will have their own special memories. Some that spring to mind include; the residential trip to the Isle of Wight, various visitors and trips to enhance the curriculum, our Christmas performances, our carnival walk around the village and the list goes on. The children have certainly taken part in a broad range of artistic, sporting and creative experiences.

Our Year 2 and Year 6 children undertook the new statutory tests and I am so proud at what the children have achieved not only through the outcomes of their tests but also when I have looked through their books and seen improved skills, new interests, academic growth and as I have wondered around school I have seen children who are developing into young people to be proud of.

The staff at school frequently go the extra mile to ensure that we provide an exciting and broad range of experiences for our children. Parents have been a massive help over the year and support the school in many ways which has made our lives so much easier at times.

I look forward to what the next academic year has in store for the Bozeat Primary academy.

OUTCOMES FROM NATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Not all comparative data has released yet and except in the case of Year 1, comparisons to previous years cannot be made as assessments are new. As you can see, the school is generally above national average in most areas which is pleasing to see and the areas in which we are not performing at national average, we shall be working hard to drive improvements over the next year.

TLC@Bozeat

During September we, as a church, will be sending out letters to all the businesses and organisations in the village, asking if they would like us to pray for them.

In the Bible we are encouraged to pray for our queen, the government, local governments and one another. So would you like to take us up on this invitation?

Some people really struggle during the shorter days of winter. If you know of anyone in particular need, just write your request on a slip of paper and either put it in our door, 11 Mill Road, or Ellie Minney’s, 5 Roberts Street or alternatively it can be placed in the locked post box on the wall of The Little Chapel, which is checked and emptied regularly. We don’t need to know names so it can be completely anonymous.

On September 10th we are holding a Coffee Morning from 10 am - 12 noon. It is to support our denomination’s annual overseas appeal which, this year is to support ‘Jessie’s House’. This project aims to give better life chances and permanent education opportunities for orphans and children at risk in Muzondo, a small village in Zimbabwe. Please come for a chat over a coffee and some homemade cake.

On that day the Historic Churches Trust are holding their annual bike ride/walk where people are asked to visit as many churches as possible in one day, so our church will be open for people to register their call (killing 2 birds!!!??).

‘All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin’.

Harvest time is nearly upon us. Rev Peter Ledger from Bedford will be our speaker at the Harvest Festival Service on Sunday 2nd October at 2.30 pm, followed by tea. We welcome everyone to come and join us.

Chapel Anniversary is on Sunday 20th November at 2.30 pm. The speaker on this occasion is to be Mrs Linnet Smith. Tea will follow this service too.

We would like to congratulate our minister, Rev Geoffrey Lee as this year he celebrates 60 years of ordination. He started his ministry in Clydebank which is just north of Glasgow, moving on to a suburb of Coventry, then taking on the role of our minister here at Bozeat 15 years ago. A life time of service to God.

May we take this opportunity to thank him for all he has done for our fellowship here at TLC and the surrounding area and we pray God’s blessing on him, as he continues to serve God in this community.

We are sad to note the passing of Miss Gillian Dunmore. She was a member of the Methodist Church until it’s closure then transferred her membership to TLC. She has left a very generous legacy to The Little Chapel and we intend to use the money wisely.

FOBs – A Brilliant Year! Together, FOBs have raised £4348.91 in the time that they have been organising events since starting in 2015. This is thanks to the families at school, the staff, local businesses and also all members of the local community. With these funds FOBs will now be purchasing a substantial amount of books ready for the new academic year. What a brilliant effort so far and a massive “thank you” to all the committee members who have worked tirelessly to make all events so successful.

Curriculum One of the things that I am most proud of since my time at Bozeat is the way in which we deliver our creative curriculum. Teachers work hard to plan a wide variety of events that the children will always remember during their time at Bozeat. One of the highlights for me this year has to be the Carnival Parade around the village. Thank you to all the Bozeat supporters who came out of their homes to come and cheer us as we walked around the village. It was a superb afternoon and one that the children will certainly not forget.

We now look forward to our new topics for September and have some great things planned for the new term which I look forward to sharing with you in the next edition.

Sport’s Day Another great year for our Nursery and main school sports day this year. The weather was great for both events and it was lovely to see so many parents attend and stay for the picnic we had on the playing field.

Goodbye Mr Stopps We finished this year by wishing Mr Stopps a happy retirement. He has finally hung up his Bozeat Primary attire after just over 30 years of service and what a memorable 30 years that has been. I’m sure you would agree with me that Jim Stopps has been an integral role in the Bozeat Community and has taught a number of parents whose children attend the school. He will be continu-ing at the school as a governor and will still play a large part in the strategic development of the school and I look forward to working with him more closely as a governor of the school.

Help in School • We are always on the lookout for volunteer helpers in school. • Would you be interested in helping maybe one afternoon a week or a fortnight? • Could you listen to children read? • Are you artistic and could help with art and craft activities? • Are you green fingered and could help with the development of our garden? • Any help however often would be greatly appreciated please contact us if you are

interested.

Your Village Needs You …..

After four years of talking about it, we need to get things started and produce a Neighbourhood Plan for Bozeat.

A team of at least twelve volunteers is required to be part of the Steering Group to produce this Plan.

Bozeat needs a Neighbourhood Plan for the following reasons:

• To actively support sustainable development • To chose where new houses, shops and businesses are built • To identify and protect buildings, facilities and local open spaces • To identify future housing needs to ensure that the growth of the village

is realistic • This ensures important services and infrastructure are not overstretched

and are protected

Neighbourhood planning is a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and work. From 2011, the Government has enabled power to be put back in the hands of local residents, employees and business, councils and civic leaders – those who know best the needs of their local areas.

Over the last four / five years, other local villages (e.g. Wollaston and Earls Barton) have undertaken this process and Bozeat has been left behind. It is now time to catch up.

We would like to hear from residents from all corners of the village – you do not need specific skills or knowledge, just a desire to see our village develop in a controlled manner. Once we have received sufficient names, we will hold a meeting of interested people, probably during September.

If you can help, in the first instance please contact myself, Andrew Morgan, by email at [email protected]

Page 25: The magazine for Bozeat and Easton Maudit 09 bmsept.pdfNisa local - Bozeat (previously Bozeat Village Store & Paper Shop) ... on-line or use your mobile phone, 24 hours a day, 7 days

the bags home with you. Please could those people who still think this doesn’t apply to them take note! Also, please watch out for the new signs which will soon appear around the village, these were designed by pupils from Bozeat Primary School and we think they are wonderful, thank you.

Flytipping We are hoping that a lockable bollard will soon be installed just above the farm entrance on the disused section of Wollaston Road in order to prevent flytipping, which seems to have become a regular occurrence. The bollard will prevent access by unauthorised vehicles whilst still allowing those on foot to walk along the lane.

Field Footpaths Our Parish Paths Warden has been informed that any problems with the field footpaths [including the paths which run from Cobblers Place through to Dag Lane parallel with London Road] should now be reported using the Street Doctor online reporting system which can be found on the County Council’s website. Go to www.northamptonshire.gov.uk and select Street Doctor from the A-Z menu. You will receive a reference number and will be able to monitor the progress of your report.

Allotments We still have a couple of vacant plots at the moment so if you would be interested in renting one please do get in touch with the Allotments Manager, Pat Driver, or the Clerk, Lyndis Payne.

Defibrillator The yellow box on the wall outside Sinclair Fabrics on London Road contains a defibrillator for use in an emergency. You only need to fetch the equipment if instructed to do so by the emergency services, who will also provide the code you need to open the cabinet. If you notice any problems with this equipment please do contact a member of the council or the Clerk, Lyndis Payne urgently.

Planning Please see a separate appeal by Andrew Morgan about the development of a Neighbourhood Plan which is vital if the village is to have greater control over future planning decisions.

Planning applications for Bozeat are decided by Wellingborough Borough Council, so if any proposals affect you or your property please do contact the Borough Council with your comments. The Parish Council is consulted about any applications for Bozeat and we do look at the plans very carefully before sending in our own comments.

Minutes Please note that copies of our approved minutes are available on the Bozeat Website or at meetings of the Parish Council, you can also read copies of the minutes at Wollaston and Wellingborough libraries.

THANK YOU to anyone who has made a donation to the funds of

Bozeat Matters recently, especially Bozeat WI for their generous

annual donation.

We are very grateful for your support.

BOWLS CLUB Carol Witherden (Club Secretary), 396473

We continue to meet every Monday afternoon at St Mary’s Church Hall. Those attending have remained at a good healthy number each week. Most weeks we are able to get two mats out. We always enjoy our games. We don't take them too seriously and everyone goes home knowing they have had a pleasant afternoon.

The team taking part in the Earl Spencer Cup has won three out of their six games with two more to play, so we haven't disgraced ourselves.

We are still unable to accept new members at present but if you are keen to play please keep looking at our bulletin in Bozeat Matters and when places become available you will be more than welcome.

BOZEAT PLAYING FIELDS Brian Gibbins, 663109

A new Committee has been enrolled to run the BPFA committed to take things forward, improve the facilities and provide a better experience for all users of this valuable village asset. Additional committee members or volunteers who just want to offer help will always be welcome.

Rushden & Diamonds Community Football Club will be the main users of the football pitches this coming season with four girls and four boys teams playing regularly at the weekends and providing valuable income for us. They would also welcome children of all age groups from the village to join the club so please contact me if you are interested in joining.

Other users are not excluded so please make contact if you have any requirements or suggestions.

The Village School have recently held a successful Sports Day and Football competition on the field, the Saturday morning casual footballers continue and the Recycle shop also opens on a Saturday morning offering tea, coffee and cakes as well, so please feel free to make use of the facilities available.

On a less optimistic note we are still suffering from vandalism damage to the pavilion and would be grateful if all users could report any incidents that they may see so that culprits can be identified. CCTV should have been installed around the pavilion by the time you read this report so we hope that will deter and help us identify any vandals.

For all bookings please contact Ann Bunker 01933 666008.

REPORT FROM BOZEAT PARISH COUNCIL

Submitted by Lyndis Payne [Clerk to Bozeat Parish Council], 65 Queen Street, Bozeat Telephone 01933 664760. Email: [email protected] Website: www.bozeatparishcouncil.gov.uk

Post Office We are pleased to report that the Post Office counter is now open on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Please make full use to ensure we maintain this service and also help demonstrate to Post Office authorities that further extended open hours are necessary.

New Member of the Council We are delighted to welcome Paul Dudley-Smith onto the Parish Council and very much look forward to working with him.

Chairman I am pleased to report that Brian Gibbins was unanimously elected to serve a further year as Chairman of Bozeat Parish Council. Village Fete Day Thank you to all the village groups and organisations and to everyone who attended this years’ Village Fete Day. This was a super event and so well attended, the weather was kind and a good time was had by all, exactly what a village fete should be.

Overgrowth The weather has been perfect for growing things and so we are receiving regular complaints about foliage from trees, hedges and shrubs growing over the pavements and roads in the village. Please could you take a few moments to check if your hedge or trees need cutting back [please check for nests before cutting back].

Verge Mowing Also on the subject of the perfect growing weather we have experienced lately, the mowing of grass verges is the responsibility of the County Council, although they have sub-contracted ours to the Borough Council, who are using Wellingborough Norse to do the work. I understand that the contractor is only paid to deliver 2 cuts per season and poor weather conditions in the spring meant a delay in delivering the first cut. The Parish Council is considering taking on board the responsibility for mowing the verges next year and are investigating the likely costs and the scale of the work [it is surprising how many areas of designated highways verge there are in this village and the responsibility could also include the verges between Bozeat and other villages] so there is a lot to think about before committing to taking this on board.

Flagpole and flags Thank you for the many positive comments received since our flagpole was put into position on the Village Green. The council has now adopted a flagpole policy and this will be displayed on our website together with all our other policies.

Dog Mess For the benefit of those who aren’t aware, the red bins with a picture of a dog on them are for dog owners to dispose of the mess they have picked up so you don’t have to take

RACHEL MALLOWS MBE

Rachel Mallows received an MBE for services to Business and Entrepreneurship in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

She set up the Mallows Company Ltd, which supports jobseekers, thirty years ago. She also set up the Made in Northamptonshire company to support those who make and sell items or produce made in the county.

The award is a very fitting tribute and very well deserved.

STOP PRESS: It has just been announced that Rachel has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire - a very great honour.

THERESA WRIGHT BEM

Theresa Wright received a BEM for services to Gosset Ward, Northampton General Hospital.

Theresa had six babies who were ’born too soon’ between 2006 and 2009. She now has five children - Lewis (6), Harrison (5), Faith (3), Holly Rose (2) and Callum (17 months). Her second son Harrison was born prematurely at 31 weeks and thanks to the care of the staff at Gosset Ward he was nursed back to health. Her sister Sharon’s son, Matthew, was also born 10 weeks early and spent about 7 weeks in Gosset Ward. More recently Callum was born at 28 weeks, after difficulties which were life threatening for mum and baby, and spent three weeks in Luton before being cared for at Gosset for a further nine weeks before he could go home.

It is obvious that Gosset is very important to her family and she has campaigned to help raise £28,000, which has enabled them refurbish the parents room, obtain a new transport incubator, scanner and now they are hoping to get some new advanced stats monitors. Her involvement also includes special events and support for the families of babies cared for on the ward, and so much more.

The fund-raising continues!

The family and friends of Rachel Mallows would like to send their congratulations on her MBE announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June.

Rachel received her MBE for services to business and entrepreneurship. Alongside her work helping the unemployed she supports a range of activities which help new and young start-up businesses in the county. In particular she works with food and drink artisan producers through a group called Made In Northamptonshire which celebrated its fifth birthday earlier this year.

We are also delighted that the Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, Mr David Laing, MA, RIBA, has appointed Rachel to be one of his Deputy Lieutenants of Northamptonshire. We are very proud of her and wish her well in her new duties!

Theresa’s family, friends and fellow fund-raisers are delighted that she has been honoured for all her hard work raising funds for Gosset Ward.

We are all so proud of you.
