The MacDowell Colony was founded in 1907 to provide creative artists
with uninterrupted time and seclusion to work and enjoy the
experience of living in a community with gifted artists. Residencies are
up to eight weeks for writers, and playwrights, composers, film and
video makers, visual artists, architects and interdisciplinary artists.
Artists in residence receive room, board and the exclusive use of a
studio. There are no residency fees. A travel grant and limited artist
grants are available to artists in residence, based on need.
MacDowell Colony ResidenciesSubjects: Creative writing, visual arts, musical composition,

Purpose: To provide a place where creative artists can take

Four major problems threaten the health of America’s babies, birth
defects, infant mortality, low birth weight and lack of prenatal care. The
goal of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation is to eliminate
these problems so that all babies can be born healthy.
Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research AwardPurpose: This award is designed to support young scientists just
embarking on their independent research careers and is limited,
therefore, to those holding recent faculty appointments. The applicants’
research interests should be consonant with those of the Foundation.
Eligibility: The Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award is
intended to be an initial independent grant to young investigators.
Eligibility is thus restricted. PhD applicants should be 4 to 8 years past
their degree and must hold a full-time faculty position at their current
institution. For MD or MD/PhD applicants, the same 4–8 year timeline
applies, but begins upon completion of the last year of clinical training
required for medical specialty board certification. Requests for
exceptions (e.g. parental leave) should be directed to the Senior Vice

The Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives was founded by
Dr Jacob Rader Marcus in 1947 in the aftermath of World War II and
the Holocaust. It is committed to preserving a documentary heritage of

family life of American Jewry. It contains nearly 5,000 linear feet of
archives, manuscripts, newsprint materials, photographs, audio and
video tapes, microfilm and genealogical materials.
The American Council for Judaism FellowshipPurpose: The American Council for Judaism Fellowship supports
scholarly historical research in a wide variety of areas that relate to the
organization’s core interests: historical perspectives on the American
Council for Judaism; the history of American Reform Judaism; the
interrelationships and integration of Jewish ideals and a democratic

Jewish faith and its coequal relationship with all faiths in America; and the

Purpose: To provide fellowships for research and writing in some
area of the American Jewish experience using the vast collection of
the American Jewish Archives.

with a five-page (maximum) research proposal that outlines the scope
of their project and lists those collections at the American Jewish
Archives that are crucial to their research. Applicants should also

Purpose: To enhance links between academia and industry in the

Purpose: The scholarship is intended to enable writers to write a new

piece of published work, or an excerpt from a piece of published work,
of between two and seven thousand words to be evaluated by a panel
set up by the MMF which will include MMF trustees and past
