With the addition of Barbara Dietrich and Robin Spencer to our team of di- rectors and officers, I look forward to strong leadership in 2011. I also look forward to Ted MacKinnon's work on our newsletter. We need an outreach to other boaters, and a thread of communication to our members throughout the winter. If you haven't done so already, be sure to get your email address to Ted, so we can keep in contact with you this winter through our newsletter. If you have ideas or suggestions to better the PIYC, this will be a good way to also get back to us. Words from Commodore Bob Young

As we wrap up one of our the warmest summers in recent mem-ory, the cooler winds of September give us a hint that the fall season is upon us. With help from several members, we've done a great job this summer of promoting activities, tourism, and cer-tainly promoted comradeship among boaters. We're known for donations that help with Presque Isle fireworks, cormorant con-trol, The Presque Isle Wooden Boat Show, free bicycle use, and free internet service at the harbor. Transient boaters look forward to our care packets given out by Dean and Barbara Dietrich. area.

Sailing Camp hits Grand Lake August 1-8, 2010 This year the first ever youth sailing camp was held on Grand Lake August 1-8, 2010. The camp was operated by the Alpena Youth Sailing Club under the direction of Peter Wil-son and Mark Upham. The Club provided all the boats, equip-ment, insurance, certified instructors and fun. The sponsors for this year’s event was The Presque Isle Har-bor Association, The Presque Isle Yacht Club, The Grand Lake Sportsmen's Club, and the Presque Isle Community Men's Club. Without these sponsors it would be impossible to hold such an event. A special thanks to the Presque Isle Harbor Association for the use of the facilities at the 'Beach House". The facilities were perfect for the event. The Camp enrolled 34 youths ranging in ages from 8 to 18. We had one youth from as far away as the United Arab Emir-ates. In addition, we know there was at least 15 youths who we could not fit in to the class due to limitations in the num-ber of boats and instructors. The lead instructor was Scott Mitchell whose parents that own a cottage on Grand Lake. Scott has a special touch when it comes to his love of sailing, the out doors and instructing the young students. We did determine that many of the youths were sponsored by their grandparents who might now be in the market for a sailboat. The classes were for 5 days with a session in the morning and a session in the afternoon. The youths, who most of them had never sailed before, now have an understanding on how to rig and sail a sailboat which includes raising the boat if it should tip over. In addition, the youths were required to know the names and tie basic sailing knots. When not sail-ing or attending instructions, the youths were swimming, div-ing off the raft, and having fun. On the final day the Presque Isle Harbor Association provided a hot dog dinner for the youths. In addition the the dinner, Dennis Norton and Robin Copeland conducted the first ever Youth Regata on Grand Lake. There were six trophies handed out to the first 6 places. We were very excited about the interest in the program and we will be planning the event for next year with improve-ments that we learned from this year’s event. We had a lot of fun and we are sure the kids will never forget this experience and the summer of 2010 on Grand Lake. If anyone would like additional information, or pre register for next year they can contact Gary Hagen 989-595-9007 or [email protected] Thanks to all of the people who were involved in this his-toric event. Some Editorial Words

This is the first issue of The Masthead, the newsletter of The Presque Isle Yacht Club. As noted elsewhere, your Editor welcomes any suggestions or comments. If errors

are found they will be corrected in a following issue.

The success of this effort depends almost entirely upon the members, who are requested to forward any items of inter-est to the Editor. It is expected that we will begin with a 6 page newsletter, although it can be easily expanded to 8 or

more pages of material as needed.

Distribution will initially be by USMail, using the ad-dresses we have on hand, which are mostly in the Presque Isle area. Winter addresses are needed for those who are away from PI in the "off" months. Everyone needs to un-derstand that the cost of mailing a newsletter is approxi-mately $1.00 per address, which includes the printing. Cur-

rently we consider our member count at 35.

Ultimately, it is our goal to bring these mailing costs down to nearly zero by using Email for distribution. This means that we also need your Email addresses. The way this works is that when the particular issue is all edited, proof-read and ready, it is converted into a so-called 'pdf" file (Portable Document Format). Typically this reduces the document size from around 20 Mb to a manageable size, making it easier to Email. It seems that nearly everyone has "Acrobat Reader" on their machine, and that is what will open the pdf file and allow the user to read it on screen. The pdf file can also be printed on the recipient's ma-chine/printer. If you do not have a computer or wish to keep it coming via USMail, no problem, you will still get it in your mailbox. US Mail will remain for now as the de-

fault method.

Here is an image that speaks to the well known fact that 7/8 of the iceberg is underwater. With the recent news of the loss of the MV Explorer and the Titanic in 1914, it’s well to keep this in mind while cruising the

high latitudes near the poles.

(Obviously an artist’s rendition of the “lower 7/8” of a berg.) —but be careful while cruising in high lati-

tudes!
