1971-1-2 PART 1: ANOTHER DAY / OH WOMAN OH WHY

ANOTHER DAY / OH WOMAN, OH WHY was Paul McCa-rtney’s first solo single release after the Beatles split. Both songs were eventually recorded in New York in November 1970. However, before he could begin the sessions, he first had to find some suitable musicians, so, at the beginning of that month, he held auditions for both a guitarist and a drum-mer. These were won by session guitarist David Spinozza and Denny Seiwell respectively (the latter also going on to become the first drummer with Wings).

The decision to credit the songwriting for Another Day to ‘Mr. & Mrs. McCartney’ was to result in considerable legal head-aches for Paul. Only a few years before, the company ATV Music had paid several million pounds to acquire the North-ern Songs publishing company, which not only held the rights to the Beatles song catalogue, but also to any new compo-sitions by Paul McCartney or John Lennon. The director of ATV Music, Lew Grade, viewed this co-authorship credit from Linda as an attempt on the part of the McCartneys to cheat ATV Music out of 50% of the royalties which would have been due to Linda. Later on, a settlement was negotiated, in which Paul agreed to film a TV special for ATV (called ‘James Paul McCartney’).

This first single was conceived as an autonomous release and unrelated to the album RAM, which was released some three months later (indeed neither track appears on the album). This single was clearly not planned as a teaser for any forthcoming LP. In fact, it would be a further seven years before Another Day appeared on an album, when it was included on Wings Greatest in 1978. It took even longer for Oh Woman, Oh Why: it was finally included as a bonus track on the 1987 CD issue of Wings Wild Life.

ANOTHER DAY / OH WOMAN, OH WHY was released in countless countries around the globe. For this reason, this first chapter of the discography is probably the most extensive section of the entire discography.

While the single was released in a black Apple die-cut sleeve in the United Kingdom and the United States, in most Euro-pean countries, it came out in a wide variety of picture sleeves. The various pressings from countries such as Denmark, Ire-land, Lebanon and New Zealand have at least one thing in common. They have basically the same matrix number as the UK issue, all of them bearing the wording ‘PECKO’ on the A-side and ‘FP’ on the B-side. It is therefore quite likely that the stampers for the pressings were supplied to these countries by the British manufacturers. There is, however, no conclusive proof of this assumption.

Beim Song Another Day wurden als Songschreiber „Mr.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON MATRIX NUM-BERS (UK PRESSINGS)The following system was used to display the UK pressings of the single Another Day / Oh Woman Oh Why :

The singles are first of all displayed in the order: 1. closed centre, 2. push-out centre and 3. open centre. Each of these is ordered according to the following variations a) without the wording ‘Cop-yright also claimed by Maclen (Music) Ltd.’ and b) with the word-ing ‘Copyright also claimed by Maclen (Music) Ltd.’. Pictured first are copies with a star (*), followed by copies without it.

Basing the list on matrix numbers would result in a completely differ-ent order. It would definitely be worthwhile doing further research into additional pressings, to determine the possible release sequence of the UK pressings.

ZUSÄTZLICHE ANMERKUNGEN ZU DENMATRIXNUMMERN (UK PRESSUNGEN)Folgendes System wurde zur Darstellung der englischen Pressun-gen der Single Another Day / Oh Woman Oh Why gewählt:

1. “closed centre”, 2. “push-out centre” und 3. “open centre”. Jeweils in den Varianten a) ohne den Aufdruck „Copyright also claimed by Maclen (Music) Ltd.“ und b) mit dem Aufdruck „Copy-right also claimed by Maclen (Music) Ltd.“.

COMMENT:This pressing has both a different matrix number and a different style of push-out centre to [1971-1/12a]. ‘Joint interest claimed by McCartney Music Inc.’ is only on the A-side label, while neither side contains the wording ‘Copy-right also claimed by MacLen (Music) Ltd.’. Since the matrix numbers end in ‘A 2’ and ‘B 2’ this might be the second pressing of this single.

COMMENT:Release from Sweden with the wording ‘Copyright also claimed by MacLen (Music) Ltd.’ on both sides and ‘Joint interest claimed by McCartney Music Inc.’ on the A-side label only. The last part of each matrix number (‘A 1’ / ‘B 1’) may indicate this to be the first pressing of the single. See also the Norwegian issue [1971-1/13a].

COMMENT:Pressed in the Riga plant (today Latvia). This is the same label variation as [1971-3/21.17a], but the colour of the label is very light yellow and the font colour is black. The EP is housed in a ‘fake’ picture sleeve which was never released officially. Furthermore it can be seen from the wording at the back of the sleeve that it should be made at the Aprelevka (Moscow) record plant. Even though it is not an official sleeve, it is still very hard to find.

KOMMENTAR:Schallplatten-Presswerk „Riga plant“ (heute Lettland).
