It will be necessary to close part of Beachborough, Folkestone, planned from Monday 1 October 2018 for an estimated period of up to 2 weeks, although it is hoped works can be completed in a shorter time (5 days).Beachborough will be closed approximately 150 metres north of the junction with the A20 Roundabout at Newington, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
Stream CleanSaturday 6 October
10.30am Tayne Field. Bring your wellies, rakes, waterproofs, etc - whatever you think you might need for a few hours in a stream!!
Tickets go on sale for Glorious from Saturday 20th October from Laing Bennett in Lyminge and from our website.
The play tells the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, whose father was determined that the world would not hear her sing. However, when he died, leaving her a wealthy woman she propelled herself into the role of an operatic diva - with a little help from her friends, St Clair, Dorothy and, of course, Ricky the dog. Florence recruits Cosme, an impoverished pianist and the rest is history. Come and join us in celebrating the life of ‘the worst opera singer in the world’.
The play is by Peter Quilter and is directed by Mike Chisnall and Jan Watts and produced by Tricia Stewart. It will be a spectacle for your eyes and leave you with a song in your heart. However, your ears may take a while to recover!
Make sure you put 14 - 17 November in your diary. It is curtain up at 7.30 pm on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. However, please note it is 3pm on the Saturday as we are not having an evening performance. Tickets are £8 each.

PATHWAYS TO THE PASTExploring the Legacy of Ethelburga
We have a Blog! You can find it at http://geopaethas.com where lots of information about progress to date can be found. When you log on for the first time, don’t forget to click the link so that you become a ‘follower’ of the blog – this means that you will get an email notification whenever something new is posted. The latest blog outlines a report from Historic England which confirms their support for the project as the remains at Lyminge are regarded as being of outstanding significance. There is also a link which gives an interesting insight as to who Ethelburga was and her place in history. We have already had some very i n t e r e s t i n g contacts about stones in garden walls and structures around the village. We aim to review them all and are already excited to note that there are ‘shaped’ stones that indicate prior use in other building(s). If you have stones that you would like us to review, please contact Liz Coleman, Administrator at:[email protected] or 863197.
Lyminge Youth Football team played their first match in the East Kent Youth League, on the Jubilee field, after several months of training and preparation. With the support of the Parish Council in securing the use of Jubilee Field the team have been able to play in Lyminge; so a big thank-you to them and to the parents and friends who turned out to prepare the pitch and support the team. We could not have asked for a better start to the season in terms of results, beating Ramsgate 5-1 in our first match on 9th September and beating 'Rising Stars' from Whitstable 5-2 away on 16th September. The Club has one team at the moment; under 11s, and hope to expand in future seasons. Coaches', Andy and Dean, vision in establishing the club is to encourage children to play football and achieve success by ensuring they enjoy it, at the same time keeping the club village-based, (most of the squad are from within the Parish). So if you'd like to find out more about the club please contact Andy at [email protected].

Letters to the Editor...... Poor Parking in Mayfield RoadI was recently appalled at the very poor parking in Mayfield Road. It was impossible for any cars (other than a very small one) to get through a gap left by a thoughtless motorist. This reflects a lack of concern for others - what would have happened if an emergency vehicle needed to get through, what about the disruption to shift workers trying to sleep through the hooting and roaring of cars and lorries as they had to reverse back onto the main road?Could all the residents please take some responsibility for the way they, and their visitors, park their cars to ensure there is proper flow of traffic.Peter Barnes, Woodland Road, Lyminge

The state of the brick outbuilding next to the Coach & Horses pub has been a long running concern but the proposal by the owners to demolish and replace it with a smaller timber building was even more unwelcome. Fortunately the District Council has refused permission for the removal of the building. You can see all the correspondence about this, including Susan’s ‘call in’ of the application, on the District Council’s website under Planning if you search for Y18/0946/FH. The decision notice for the refusal makes clear that ‘is considered to positively contribute to the historic character of the Coach and Horses.’ We now hope a suitable use and renovation will be possible.Susan attended the site visit on 10 September for the proposed changes to the play park on Tayne Field and she and Jenny hope to help the project through a grant to cover the planning application costs. The plans have been changed so that no trees need to be removed. The next step is for the Parish Council (which owns the land) to make the planning application. Susan was also at the BBQ and Music Night at Lyminge church on 31 August which is one of their regular (free) events. Everything about it worked well (food, music, friendliness) and if you’ve not yet been then you’re missing a treat.Jenny has long wanted a way of helping people find out about the activities and services across our district and has now been able to realise this ambition with the imminent launch of a new website called spotlight.folkestone-hythe.gov.uk The site will list everything from play sessions for toddlers to tea parties for pensioners as well as activities and clubs. It’s free to use and there’s a prize draw of £200 for organisations that sign up. It’s a way to bring people together and support the great organisations and groups we have in the district in general and Lyminge in particular.Lyminge is fortunate to have an excellent monthly newsletter and we hope you find our regular reports useful. However, nothing beats actually meeting people and in September we were out in the parish knocking on doors with our Conservative newsletter and listening to local views. Our MP, Damian Collins was with us so we were able to cover issues both local and national. We can’t solve every problem but where we can help we will do so. Thank you to the people who have already responded to our call to report street name signs that need replacement and these should be done within a few weeks. We were both saddened by the sudden death of Lynne Martin who was both a Lyminge resident and clerk to Lyminge Parish Council. We both knew and liked Lynne from her time working for the District Council and subsequently Hawkinge Town Council. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friendsSusan Carey ([email protected] 01303 670561) and Jenny Hollingsbee ([email protected] 07887918458) - ward councillors for North Downs West, Folkestone and Hythe District Council

There are written records of a Gardening Society in Lyminge dating back to 1948 but it may go back to the inter-war days or even further. Since then, as with many voluntary societies it has seen many ups and downs. Membership this year stands at around 60 and rising but we are always glad to welcome new members – the more the merrier!
Two flower shows, one in the Spring and one in the Summer, have been enjoyed by so many people over the years. All the trophies have been donated by people and firms connected with the village. The shows always attract a range of entries and visitors enjoy looking at all the exhibits and having a refreshing cup of tea and delicious cake. Why not have a go and enter at the next show in the spring. You do not have to be a member of the Society to enter either of the shows.
The Society not only runs the shows but each month from March to November there are meetings or outings. Outings over the past few years have included local gardens at Postling, Hastingleigh, Smeeth, Port Lympne gardens, Elham Valley Vineyard and The Orangey at Chartham, as well as a coach trips to places like Wisley Gardens and Pashley Manor. One year a 'wine and wander' evening, was arranged when members walked around the village visiting various gardens and enjoying a drink. The ‘Grand Finale’ to the gardening year is a Christmas Meal together in December.
Well attended monthly meetings (usually the third Tuesday in every month), which are currently held in the Tayne Centre, have included, in recent years, very well known speakers such as Nick Hamilton (the late TV gardener, Geoff Hamilton's son). The most popular meeting last year was a ‘Gardeners Question Time’ with Steve and Derek from Farthing Common Plant Nursery which as well as informative was entertaining and enjoyable. This is to be repeated in April 2019 so bring your questions along! Oh, and ‘not to be sneezed at ’, Farthing Common and the Vineyard Nursery offer 10% discount on plants to Lyminge society members.

Back in June Stagecoach added an extra 17 bus journey in each direction on Sundays and Bank Holidays. However, there is now a reduction in frequency of the 17 route on Sundays which is down to lack of demand, with the current passenger numbers not covering the operating costs. The full new timetables are available on their website.
