CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord. People: Who made heaven and earth.

Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? People: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

Pastor: Since we are gathered to hear God's Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.

(We take a moment of silence to reflect on our sin and our need for the Savior.)

Pastor: Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. All: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I announce God’s grace to you. Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the V Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

V WORD V (readings from NIV84 pew bibles)

OLD TESTAMENT READING Job 1:6-12 6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also

came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and

forth in it.” 8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is

no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

Page 5: The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer03c4622.netsolhost.com/assets/8-16-20c8.pdf2020/08/16  · 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the

12 The LORD said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

EPISTLE READING Hebrews 2:10-3:1 10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through

whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.”

13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.”

And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16

For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. 3 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils.

23 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.

SERMON What Satan Doesn’t Want You to Know:

Not God’s Equal (Part 1 of 3) Intro: Dismissive vs. excessive… avoiding the extremes I. Satan is Powerful A. A personal being, not evil personified B. AKA 1. The accuser / adversary (Job 1:6/1Pe 5:8) 2. Lucifer – morning star / light-bearer (Is 14:12) 3. Beelzebul (Lk 11:15) 4. The great dragon, that ancient serpent (Rev 12:9) 5. The tempter (Mt 4:3) 6. Murderer & father of lies (Jn 8:44) 7. Ruler/god of this world (Jn 14:30/2Co 4:4) 8. The evil one (Mt 13:19) 9. The devil (Mt 4:1) C. Army of soldiers

II. His Power has Limits A. A created being B. Not a mind-reader, but a diligent observer C. “And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.’” – Job 1:12 D. “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.” – Luke 11:21–22

III. God has already Conquered Satan A. “But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” – Luke 11:20 B. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” – Hebrews 2:14–15 In recognizing the influence of Satan and his demons in the world, how have you avoided the extremes of being dismissive or excessive? How does God’s complete power over Satan give you peace and comfort in light of any fears that weigh on you?

RESPONSE OF FAITH Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

5 As he of old deceived the world

And into sin and death has hurled, So now he subtly lies in wait To undermine both Church and state.
