Open Source Software

Getting started if using NAS within your Wi‐Fi network:

1. Connect LUMIN and the NAS to your network using Ethernet cables. 2. Be sure your iPad (Or other tablet, laptop, etc.), is connected by Wi‐Fi  to the network and be sure to install MinimServer/MinimWatch, (or other media control software), on to your NAS, (or on to another networked HDD).3. Connect LUMIN to your audio system or amplifier using your preferred audio connectors.4. Connect the LUMIN Power Supply to the LUMIN and then to your Power Outlet.  Now, turn on all devices.6. Make sure there are some music files in the correct folder on your NAS (often called ‘Music’), or optionally on a HDD that resides on your network.  (If not using a NAS but another HDD, leave your PC on during playback).

Make sure the UPnP Media Server software (Like MinimServer/Minim Watch), has started on your NAS (And/or other HDD on the network). If your server or HDD ID shows up under Music Library on the Lumin App as a greyed our option, you may need to manually start or restart your media server software. Instructions can be found on   the websites of your NAS manufacturer.  For example: Synology instructions and Qnap instructions.  

Starting the LUMIN iPad App will automatically detect your UPnP Media Server and your LUMIN Audiophile Network Music Player. If you have multiple LUMIN units or multiple Media Server drives, you can choose these from the Lumin App. set up menus.  To open these menus touch the cog wheel on the upper right of your iPad. (This cogwheel look like a jagged edge circle with a hole in the middle).

Your music selections will now display in the main LUMIN App browse window where you can now select music to play back selections and create playlists.  See 'The App' page for further information and instruction.

Note: After you have your Ethernet network and wi fi router running, you may optionally connect a USB HDD directly into the USB inputs on the back of The Lumin, (to use the Lumin App called “USB Server”).  This USB direct option only works when Ethernet wired connection is made because this is how the Lumin receives commands. The Lumin App commands travel from tablet to Wi‐Fi router, then on through Ethernet cable directly into the Lumin.

• Which UPnP music software is best suited for LUMIN when using a NAS device?Many are available like iTunes, Foobar, ArcMC Lite, Twonky,  Kinsky‐Linn, Media Share, etc. However, LUMIN strongly recommends MinimServer + MinimWatch.  Lumin also includes “Lumin USB server” software to control the USB ports on the back of the unit. These support all the features of the LUMIN and much of the development and testing of LUMIN was performed with MinimServer. Full install instructions by OS or by NAS are located at: http://minimserver.com/installing.html

• MinimServer supports Windows x86, Windows x64, Mac OS X+,  Linux x86 and Linux ARM.

• Which NAS products are best for LUMIN?LUMIN strongly recommends Synology NAS devices because they are good products and there are installation instructions available for adding our preferred music server software for NAS called  MinimServer.

• Do I need to tag my music?Yes, the LUMIN App uses these tags to organize your music. Historically, server and control software has performed poorly with this method, leading to many people organizing their music using folder structure on their servers.  LUMIN seeks to improve on that system using tags to improve flexibility and browsing speed.

We recommend that you use appropriate tagging (And/or ripping) software to correctly tag your music library.  A few good examples are Mp3tag or http://www.fairstars.com/cdripper/ or http://www.freac.org/

• How long does the LUMIN App take to cache my tagged music?The first time you use it, the LUMIN App will cache all the artwork. This can take a few minutes (Approx. 250 albums per minute depending on the resolution for the artwork).  After this first time, LUMIN only needs to load new music that you might add to your library.  This takes usually only a few seconds.

• It is possible that a software update may require your library to be re‐cached (IE: Re‐loaded).

• Can LUMIN control my amplifier volume?Currently, this feature is not available. However, within the Lumin App the volume control (Top right), digitally adjusts the output level to your amp. from The LUMIN. This is not necessarily the highest quality method and therefore we recommend that you use your amp. or pre‐amp volume control for this purpose. Reducing this control from 100 will also cause conversion of your DSD files to PCM because DSD requires a fixed output level (In this case at level 100).

• It is possible that certain network‐connected amplifiers may be supported in the future.

• Can the LUMIN App be used with other UPnP AV systems?LUMIN uses the Linn UPnP AV Open Source Extension and it is our intention to provide the LUMIN App for use with other systems that also use this extension. Currently, however, no warranty or guarantee of operation can be provided with systems other than LUMIN.

• The LUMIN App will not currently control generic UPnP devices.

• The Lumin App also supports USB HDD playback (without a PC or NAS in the network).
