INSIDE THIS ISSUE
"The difference between success
and failure is not skill, technique,
credentials, network, or even ex-
perience. It is clarity about who
one is."
- Joseph Badaracco
To become successful in our ca-
reer, we have stay true to our
goals and purpose. As we journey
our way to the digital era, where
there is so much information on
the internet and the industry is
becoming more challenging as
the years go by: clients are get-
ting smarter, stricter government
regulations, low insurance pene-
tration in the market and most of
the insured do not have enough
life insurance coverage for their
family.
How do we level up our game?
how do we achieve our competi-
tive advantage? How do we stay
Welcome to our LUA Philippines digital homepage!
Once more, it is my pleasure to give my warmest congratulations to the Life Underwriters Association of the Philippines for another year well done. Just as the preceding year, 2018 has become yet another banner year for the entire insurance industry. The life insur-ance industry continues to be a major contributor to this success which could not be possible without the hardwork of our life underwriters.
For the record, the industry rec-orded the highest amount of premiums collected by the year-end of the 2018. Of the total 290.15 Billion Pesos, the life insurance sector contributed accounted for 78.79 percent of the total premium income, amounting to 228.61 Billion Pesos. This amount represents the sum of 170.22 Billion Pesos generated from the sale of variable Life Insurance Prod-ucts and 58.40 Billion Pesos from Tradi-tional Life Insurance Products. Per-haps, more than anything, this can be all attributed to the incessant efforts by our life insurers to ensure that their un-derwriters and agents are able to stay on top of their game in a digital econo-my.
On our part, the Insurance Commission has incessantly being working to build an environment for healthy competition in our industry.
The LUAP LIFE Message

Message from the Insurance Commissioner
Atty. Dennis B. Funa Insurance Commissioner
“...your personal cat-
alyst is that which
stems from service
that will ensure the protection of many
lives.”
LUAP meets with some of the insurance companies’ presidents, CEOs, top management officers as well as our government regulators.
While tighter regulations on the poach-ing of agents were attempted, certain conflicting regulations with other regula-tory bodies have yet to be resolved. Rest assured however, the commission will not tolerate unsafe and unsound business practices that place the insuring public in danger.-
Moving forward, though chang-es from FinTech and InsureTech will continue, our battle-cry for our under-writers remain firm: strike a balance between technology and data. The fu-ture underwriter will undoubtedly need to significantly improve his or her skills in data analytics, fostering the mental agility and open mindedness to meet the demands upon them. With technol-ogy already part of the fiber that runs our operations, the last key to truly suc-ceed in the future lies in each one of us. Underwriters must be able to capture from within themselves the importance of what they are doing. Once found, it is expected that they strive their utmost to live up to this purpose. While it may not the same on its face for everyone, sure-ly, it cannot be one that is rooted in self-centered and sort term returns. Instead, you may find that your personal catalyst is that which stems from service that will ensure the protection of many lives.
Last May 21, 2019, LUA Philippines
organized another high calibre learning
experience; this time for the rookies of the life
insurance industry. Two of our industry’s top rook-
ie producers were invited to share their
journey. Jarel Hernal, Philam Life’s youngest Top
of the Table and Top 2 ACE Awardee, and
Jayson Pedro, one of Pru Life UK’s top case clos-
ers and an MDRT, blazed the stage of
Quezon City Sports Club with their best practices
as finance professionals.
Jarel Hernal joined the industry with a
passion to help other people. He had no idea what
it’s like to be a financial advisor and
originally preferred to work at the government or
to pursue Law school. When he realized that he
and his three brothers were beneficiaries of
educational plans, he knew he had to pay it
forward. The Humanities graduate from Ateneo

with rejections. But his fulfilling journey, despite ob-
stacles left and right, was made easy by the people
who support and believe in him. He honored his
family for giving him constant support and his
agency for being an extension of home and for
being more than just business partners.
Blazing beyond Borders key points:
Connect and reconnect – get in touch with
relatives, colleagues, and friends, and remember
the significant roles they played in your life. Our
career is about building trust.
Support people in their respective
fields – It’s not about YOU to be given referrals to.
Promote your prospect’s business, connect them
with other people. Build bridges for others. Learn
something new – A point of interest is a point of
connection. After all, these are the perks of having a
flexitime work schedule.

“When I started as a
Financial Consultant in 2004, I
knew I needed to learn a lot. I
heard that there is an
organization for insurance
agents, the Life Underwriters
Association of the
Philippines, and I started to at-
tend seminars. It is an
organization which provides a
venue for insurance agents from
different companies to share and
learn from each
other.
It greatly helped me when I
was new in the
industry. I believe everyone will
benefit from it as well.”
