ScopeofMini-Surveys
Inaddition toexecuting themainsurvey,theLSSTobservingprogramwillinclude aselection ofMini-Surveys.
These haveawiderangeofscience goalsandtotalexposures.Theyinclude theDeep-DrillingFields(DDF)aswellastheNorthEclipticSpur(NES),theSouthCelestial Pole(SCP),theGalacticPlane(GP),andseveralotherprograms.
Thebaseline expectation isthattheMini-Surveyswillutilizeupto~ 10%oftheLSSTtime,butthefinalpercentage isnotyetdetermined. Thefinaldecisionwillbeinformedbytheongoingcommunity-based studyofobservingstrategy.
ScienceplansfortheseMini-Surveysstill beingdeveloped, andtheselection ofMini-Surveysisstill largelyopen.Plentyofopportunitytogetinvolvedifinterested!
Discussions expected tocontinueuptoandbeyondfirstlight.

PromptSelectionofFour“Blank-Field”DDFs
TheLSSTScienceCouncil, inconsultation withtheDDIG,chosefour“blank-field” DDFsforobservationbyLSST.Thiswasdone in2011-2012.
Thiswasseparatefromthewhite-paper activities; i.e.,thewhitepaperswerenot“proposals”totheScienceCouncil thatwerejudgedcompetitively.
TheScienceCouncil’smotivationwascommunityservice. Enablespreparatoryobservations; e.g.,thosebyobservatorieswithlimited lifetimes.
Spitzerobservationsnowongoingforthreeofthefields.XMM-Newton observationsnowongoingforpartofXMM-LSSfield,andmoreX-raycoverageproposed forthese fields.
Asidefromthefieldpositions, nothingelse decidedaboutthesefields.
TheLSSTandbroadercommunities willbeengaged,onalongertimescale, inworkingoutthebestchoices ofLSSTcadence,filters, filterbalance, dithering,etc.forthese fourfields.
