For Christians, there is no greater joy than the joy of Easter. We gather as

believers to celebrate the resurrection, and to proclaim our HOPE in eternal life.

Christians have forgotten what the word hope means. We say things like “I hope it doesn’t rain today” or “I hope my child will behave himself at the sleepover tonight.” To get a true sense of the Biblical meaning of hope, we would need to answer the question “Are you going to heaven when you die?” by answering “That is my HOPE!”

When HOPE becomes a possession, we experience joy. If you answer the question about heaven by saying “I hope so,” then you don’t really possess hope.

I look forward to meeting you on Easter Sunday and every other Sunday of the year in the Roser Sanctuary, a place where we possess HOPE and live in joy!

Alicia DoudnaViolinist Alicia Doudna has performed and taught throughout the US and abroad. She has performed with Itzhak Perlman, Paul Katz, Ronald Copes and members of the Cavani Quartet. As a chamber musician she has appeared at various festivals including Yellow Barn, Kneisel Hall, The Great Lakes Chamber Music with various chamber orchestras and ensembles, including A Far Cry, The East Chamber Orchestra, The Suedama Ensemble, Radius Ensemble, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and The Detroit Sym-phony Orchestra. As a member of the Phoenix Quartet, she performed and taught as an artist-in-residence at the University of Michigan.

Ms. Doudna was previously the director of the Peninsula Strings Program in Blue Hill, Maine and also served as a Fellow and teaching assistant to Merry Peckham at the Perlman Music Program in New York. She has taught at The Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp - Family Suzuki Institute, been on the faculty of the Sphinx Preparatory Program in Detroit, MI and has given guest artist master classes at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Chamber Music Connection in Columbus, Ohio. Her principal teachers included Lucy Chapman, David Updegraff, Mimi Zweig and Suzuki Meth-od pioneer, John Kendall. She holds a BM from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a MM from The New England Conservatory. Alicia is currently living and working in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she performs and teaches solo and chamber music. She continues to be inspired by her love of music and the people who enrich her life.

MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICEApril 2 at 7:00 PM in the Roser Memorial ChapelThe Roser Ringers will play several Handbell selections and a choir en-semble will sing an alternate verse from the Cantata song, Wash Their Feet, written especially for Maundy Thursday. There will be congrega-tional singing of Hymns and a message by Rev. Dr. Bob O’Keef entitled UNDERSTANDING JESUS followed by a Service of Communion.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICEApril 3 at 12:00 PM in the Roser Memorial Chapel

The purple cloth hanging on the cross in the Chapel will be changed to black as we remember the crucifixion of Christ and worship Him through respon-sive readings, singing of hymns, and prayer. Soloist, Lorna Smilde, will sing Via Dolorosa. The sermon by Rev. Dr. Bob O’Keef is entitled I AM THE KING.

EASTER SUNDAY SERVICESApril 5 at 8:30 & 10:00 AM in the Roser SanctuaryBring a flower to place on the Cross! As worshippers arrive they are invited to place a flower in the chicken wire of the old rugged cross,transforming it into a beautiful cross covered with flowers. The live flowers are a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. Families are invited to take this opportunity to bring a camera and have a photograph taken in front of the cross after the service when it is covered in flowers.

The Chancel Choir will begin the service with a Litany for Easter, sung from the Narthex: Alleluia! Christ is risen, Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ is risen. They will then process to the choir loft with the singing of the first hymn. The Anthem for Easter, Now the Green Blade Riseth, is a metaphor for Jesus’ resurrection. During the Offertory another song from the Cantata based on Revelation 5:11-13, Worthy is the Lamb, will be sung.

The sermon by Rev. Dr. Bob O’Keef is the last in The I AM God series entitled I AM the Resurrection and the Life! During the last hymn we invite any congregates who wish to sing with the Choir to come up to the loft for the singing of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from “The Messiah”. This will be sung after the benediction in place of the Amen.

During the 10:00 AM service there will be a special Easter Children’s Church followed by an Easter Egg Hunt. A nursery is available for infants and toddlers.

MISSION OF THE MONTHOUR DAILY

BREADOur Daily Bread has served the Bradenton community for thirty years. It started in 1984 when 15 to 20 people were served lunch out of a store front at 14th street. Now this free lunch program is at the One Stop facility on 17th street, serving an average of 250 men, women, and children every day. For more information go to www.ourdailybreadofbradenton.org.

Roser is a long time sustaining donor of this effort to feed the hungry, and the collection will provide special help with food, supplies and related services. A Turning Point project allows Our Daily Bread to distribute 6000 food bags annually to help the needy. A standard package (15 pounds) for the month includes 2 cans of meat, 2 vegetables, 2 fruits, 2 soups, beans, rice, and milk. With a new warehouse next door to the kitchen, more space will allow for the distribution of perishable food when available.

Roser has committed to staff kitchen volunteers on the 2nd Monday and 5th Sunday of each the month. There has been an increase of diners, keeping the eight volunteers busy from 9:00-11:30. The team is made up of islanders and vacationers, all sharing an interest in living the gospel of love in this hands-on approach.

UPDATE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE CONGREGATION

It is now mid-March and Roser Community Church is busy and active. Our winter members and friends are here and participating in services and groups. How wonderful to have so many people involved in church activities! The articles in this issue of the Messenger will bring you up-to-date on much of what has been and will be happening. I hope you can feel the same energy and vitality that I do as I read about all that is taking place.

I want to let you know that the search for the new Associate Pastor position has started. This position will focus primarily on Christian Discipleship, expanding our current programs and creating new programs for all age groups at Roser. In addition, this position will work with Missions to expand hands-on mission opportunities and will also assist Dr. Bob with pastoral duties in and out of worship services. The job description has been developed to reflect ideas generated at the Planning Retreat held last October.

NOTES from the Music Committee

As we enter April, we are in the middle of Easter week.

Last week we celebrated PALM SUNDAY with the Chancel Choir presenting Pepper Choplin’s Cantata, COME, TOUCH THE ROBE.

This first Thursday of April is MAUNDY THURSDAY, commemorating the Last Supper and its preceding foot washing. For this evening the Roser Ringers will play several Handbell selections and a choir ensemble will sing an alternate verse from the Cantata song, Wash Their Feet, written especial-ly for Maundy Thursday. There one night in the upper room, we shared a holy meal. He gave us bread and then the cup and said, “Remember me.”

On GOOD FRIDAY, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus, there will be a noon service in the Chapel. The special music for this service will be a solo sung by Lorna Smilde called Via Dolorosa. The Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrows, is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem, said to be the path that Jesus walked carrying his cross on the way to his crucifixion.

On EASTER SUNDAY there will be a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead in scripture and song. Please read the description of the service on page 2.

On APRIL 12 we celebrate MUSIC SUNDAY in scripture and song incorporating all areas of the music program. The Joyful

Noise Children’s Choir sing Over My Head I Hear Music In The Air…The Anthem will be Hal Hopson’s We Sing The Mighty Power

Of God, which is based on Kingsfold, an English folk tune. We will have a special guest violinist, ALICIA DOUDNA (see right).

On APRIL 19, we invite the Congregation to join the Music Ministry in a “THANK YOU” FELLOWSHIP after the Worship Service. Phyllis O’Keef has been our Interim Music Minister since November and has carried the

program through as strongly as Jim Johnston left it. We want to thank her for being with us and show her how much we appreciate all she has done with and for us this past six months. Phyllis’s last Sunday as Interim Music Minister will be April 26.

Our new Director of Music Ministry, KRISTEN STANTON, will begin working May 4.

Alicia suffered from a traumatic brain injury following a car accident in 2011. She feels that, ultimately, her musical experience was the key to her recovery along with the support of many amazing relatives and friends. “I’ve said this a million times: I really think music’s wiring in my brain helped save my life. I think music wires the brain differently. “It’s an excellent way of sharing emotions. Sadness, happiness, and reality.
