FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Members and Friends,
The book of Habakkuk is a short book of three chapters in the Old Testament. The message of Habakkuk,
however, is just as meaningful today as it was when it was written @679-648 B.C. Habakkuk asks the
questions, Why do you [the Lord] make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? Destruction and
violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. (Habakkuk 1:3, NIV) Why then do you tolerate
the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
(Habakkuk 1:13, NIV)
We ask these same questions today. Why does God allow Christian people to undergo hardship and strife while
allowing non-Christians to prosper? It does not seem fair.
God replies to Habakkuk’s questions with a revelation: the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the
end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk
2:3, NIV)
The revelation speaks of woe coming to all those who have gained their wealth through stealing, bloodshed,
unjust gain, and crime. On the other hand, the righteous will live by his faith (Habakkuk 2:4, NIV). As God
declares in 2:3, we must be patient and wait for it.
Habakkuk closes his book by stating, Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are not sheep in the pen and no cattle in
the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength…
(Habakkuk 3:17-19, NIV)
Like Habakkuk, we need to keep our faith in God no matter how bad things become. God promises that in the
end, the wicked will suffer and the righteous will live. Let us therefore “rejoice in the Lord” and “be joyful in
God [our] Savior.”

TRINITY DAY CARE CENTER… Thanks to the vision and support of Trinity UMC and various members of the Walnut Bottom community TDCC is beginning its 26th year of operation. As an educator, I am very grateful that the children in our community and neighboring communities have a safe sanctuary where they can come not only to play and socialize, but also to gain the skills necessary to make a smooth transition into the public education system. In addition, they also begin to learn the teachings of Jesus Christ through stories and songs that are part of their weekly curriculum. We are a mission of TUMC…one that is serving our immediate area. With the start of the new school year the classrooms have come alive with art work and decorations. If you have the opportunity, please take a look around the basement classrooms after church. There you will see some of the crafts the children have been doing, and also the great decorations the teaching staff has incorporated to produce an exciting learning environment for the children. I want to express my thanks to all those who have donated time or supplies to TDCC. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated! If you happen to see Ginny Frehn please congratulate her…she is now beginning her 26th year with TDCC. She has been here since day one, and is the teacher of the Pre-K class in addition to being assistant director. Her leadership and commitment to the children of this area is second to none.
Trinity United Methodist Church Council Minutes – August 2014
The Church Council meeting was held in the Goodhart Classroom on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
Those in attendance were:
Pastor Harold, Karen Boutcher, Dave Evelhoch, Clifford Grim, Janet Grove, Jenny Harkins, Glorianne
Hilsinger, Tom Holmes, Bev Rosenberry, Jack Wyrick
Tom Holmes called the meeting to order. Pastor Harold read a passage from Leviticus and offered an opening
prayer.
The secretary’s report from July 2014 meeting was reviewed. With no changes the minutes were approved by
verbal vote.
Tom Holmes reported Marty made another payment to the Shares of Ministry. The treasurer’s report was
reviewed and approved as presented. Pastor Harold reported that the Pastor’s insurance and Church insurance is
up to date. Glorianne asked what the consequences are of not being current with payment to Shares of Ministry.
Pastor Harold stated that all decisions are made by the Conference and some consequences that he is aware of
could be:
- To combine Churches
- To replace the Pastor and possibly use a lay leader or local Pastor
These are the most common consequences and done to share the costs of these expenses. A part time Pastor is
another option.
There was a general discussion regarding possible consequences the Church could face. Glorianne asked if the
Conference has ever lowered the Shares of Ministry. Pastor Harold said yes, they have done that; in the past
cuts have been made to assist Churches. Pastor Harold gave a brief explanation of how the Conference budget
is put together.
Committee reports were given as follows:
STEWARDSHIP – Nothing to report.
TDCC –Bev Rosenberry reported that the Day Care Center is doing well although this past month was a little
low. Bev asked the Council for approval of Heather Myers to the Day Care Board. Heather has children in
Trinity Day Care. Heather was approved by verbal vote of the members in attendance. Bev also reported that
Glorianne agreed to go back on the Day Care Board if needed. Dave Evelhoch made a motion to accept
Glorianne to the Day Care Board and the motion was seconded by Jack Wyrick and approved by members.
Cliff reported that $500 for July was received from the Day Care Board.
WORSHIP – Jack Wyrick reported the Picnic is scheduled for August 24th. Communion was served to 12
people on August 3rd
. Jack noted that he just learned that the date for Promotion Sunday was changed from
August 31 to August 24th
. Pastor Harold said the date was changed because of the possibility of people being
away for the Labor Day weekend. Jack reported that the Watch Night Service on New Year’s Eve is going to be
cancelled because a fair amount of people attended the New Year’s Day service. A notice will be placed in the
Church bulletin to let the congregation know of this change.
VISION – Pastor Harold reported the Vision Team would like to have a combined service on first Sunday in
September to talk about the proposed changes and show a short video to the congregation. On the second
Sunday in September there will be a further discussion about the results of the survey. The fourth Sunday in
September the Vision team is going to discuss what can be done to implement the changes brought before the
congregation. A short video will be shown on each Sunday in September. The people from the 8 a.m. service
will be invited to attend the 10:15 a.m. service in the month of September.
BUILDING COMMITTEE –Dave Evelhoch had nothing to report this month.
AUDIT –Nothing to report.
TRUSTEES – Dave Evelhoch said a machine was purchased from Best Line for the painting of the parking lot
lines. All lines have two coats. Tom remarked that the painted lines look very nice. Thirteen to fifteen people
helped with the August 2nd
work day at the Church. Stones were put down in the front of the church, painting
and tree trimming was done. It was a full day of work. Dave said there is mold in the closet where the Boy
Scout items are and this will be taken care of. The projector at the back of the Sanctuary keeps moving and
there is a plan to fix this problem. Dave said he received a call concerning the young boys who are not
respecting the church property. There was another occurrence on Saturday night. They are not being
destructive but neither are they being respectful. Pastor Harold asked the youth to stop throwing stones. We
will continue to monitor this situation, and if it continues further action will be taken.
Day Care has asked if a Radon test and lead paint test has been done. Dave said he was not sure so he
purchased a radon test kit and will get it done. More research is needed on the lead paint matter.
OUTREACH – Glorianne reported 75 meals were served at My Brother’s Table. A week prior to the August
event, 140 meals were served. Glorianne believes they have a higher participation later in the month, rather
than earlier due to when checks are received. Everyone was very appreciative of the meal.
YOUTH – Tom reported that Corrie’s Dad is in the hospital fighting cancer and he asked that everyone keep
Corrie and her family in their prayers. The Youth will have their kick off after school begins.
FOOD BANK – Nothing new to report.
SHUT-INS –It was noted that new people have been added to the list.
UMW - Another joint venture event is scheduled by the UMC and Lion’s Club for the local group home. This
will be a cook out on Friday, September 5th
at the Church Pavilion. They need some help with cooking on the
grill. Tom said he would be glad to help, if his schedule permits. Tom will let Glorianne know. Janet said the
next meeting of UMW will be September 8th
in Janet’s garden.
SCOUTING – Pastor Harold read a letter/report from Gayle Christman regarding Pack 115. Although this is
not a large group, they are still meeting. The next meeting is September 11 at 7 p.m. in Church basement
fellowship room. Cliff noted that the items in the Scout closet which Dave referred to belong to the Church, not
the Scout troop. There appears to be enough young boys moving from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts that the
Charter may be saved. Pastor Harold will get clarification on this.
OLD BUSINESS – Tom will try to get the matter of the new computer system moving forward, as it was hoped
to be completed by the end of the summer. Tom will talk with Kim, Paul and Mike.
Tom read the suggested updates to the Fund Raising Policy and stated that he is comfortable with the Policy as
amended. The purpose of the changes was to clarify and define the parameters of the Fund Raising Policy.
Tom asked if there were any discussion on the matter.
The following items in the Policy were discussed:
Number 4: Regarding the specific Holidays listed, Tom had researched other church policies and found
these Holidays to be the most consistent Holidays listed where fund raising should not be done. Pastor Harold
stated that these are the main Christian Holidays.
Number 11: What is meant by ‘a timely manner’? Pastor Harold said it varies with each event but the
intent was to ensure that people know a report will be expected and if too much time transpires, the group in
charge of the event will be asked to submit their report.
Number 10: Jack Wyrick told the Council that he felt all the fund raisers held last year hurt the general
fund giving. Jack said it appears people gave to the fund raisers more than they gave to the general fund.
Number 6: It was suggested to remind groups to make a donation and/or tithe when the Church is being
used for fund raising events.
There was general discussion of fees for weddings, etc. held at the church and a suggestion was made that these
service fees be reviewed and perhaps listed in the Church newsletter or the Church directory. It would be good
if Church members knew the fees in the event they are asked.
A motion was made by the Fund Raising Committee to accept the Policy as revised. Dave seconded the motion
and it carried by verbal vote.
Tom thanked everyone who served on this Committee.
NEW BUSINESS:
Karen Bouchter said $341 was made for the Shippensburg Senior Center at the fund raising event at Hoss’s in
Chambersburg.
Pastor Harold reported that he and Scott Gleim will meet to discuss the Shares of Ministry and a report will be
given to the Conference after this discussion.
Pastor Harold closed the meeting with a prayer.
The next Council meeting will be September 15th
at 7 p.m.

Here are some ways you can help preserve our Earth’s resources: Trinity’s Clothing Closet – Please donate your unwanted new & gently used clothing of all sizes, toys, books, small household items, and decorative items. Open – every Saturday & 2nd & 4th Wednesdays from 9 AM until noon. Jacksonville Lions Club – Our local Lions use eyeglasses & cases, hearing aids, printer cartridges, hospital equipment, assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, shower/tub seats, bedside potty chairs, etc.). Call 422-8907 for more info or to borrow medical aids on a temporary basis. Mission Central – This United Methodist facility in Mechanicsburg uses old cell phones, electronics, large household items, and many other things. Call 717-766-1533 for more info. Here are some ways you can help grow God’s kingdom here in Walnut Bottom: … pray daily for our church and its members … support TUMC with your attendance and active participation … invite unchurched people in your social circle to come to TUMC … react positively with encouragement toward other members in our church family … teach, assist, attend Sunday school classes … provide nursery duty … serve as a liturgist … serve on the sound desk … present children’s sermons … participate in the prayer shawl ministry … help Trinity’s Clothing Closet … serve at My Brother’s Table … serve on any number of committees … sing in Trinity’s choirs … Just ask!
Children are also needed to serve as acolytes.

USING TFC OR PAVILION? It is important that your request to use TFC or the pavilion is turned in ASAP in writing.
This applies to each and every church group
AND for personal rentals.
Also, if your group wants to use TFC paper goods, please make your needs known in advance.
Written requests for reservations should be turned in to the church office or to Dave
Evelhoch as soon as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts & also to arrange for HVAC needs.
Any group expecting to use TFC paper goods should let Dave know in plenty of time. Let him know exactly what is needed and then please make a contribution to the Building Fund for such goods.

PUBLICITY/COMMUNICATION? If your church group is planning an event that is
open to the public and you want it publicized, see Betty B. Evelhoch ASAP with the basic details. Info will be submitted to cable TV, area newspapers, and posted in church bulletins, newsletters, and website. Facebook and posters are also options. Note that some free publicity sources require weeks of advance notice, so do not wait until the last moment to seek publicity.

YOUR PRAYER LIST? Prayer is the most important conversation of the day. Take it to God before you take it to anyone else.
What should be on your daily prayer list? Here are
some suggestions:
Request more love, wisdom, strength,
transformation of lives, your church, peace of
Jerusalem, world peace, families & their needs,
health, burdens, forgiveness, and our nation.
Pray for Trinity Church and its members – the ill,
shut-in, lonely, disillusioned, depressed, tired,
afraid, discouraged, hurt, mourning, slipping away
from God, military and their families, and anyone
else in need of prayer.
Also, pray with thanksgiving for those who
continue doing God’s work with a cheerful heart
within our church and community
Pray for unity, peace, strength, hope, comfort, and a
reawakening of God’s spirit within each person.
Remember to pray without ceasing.
The power of prayer is amazing!
Life is fragile. Handle with prayer!
Don’t put people down – unless it is on your
prayer list.
