The 1920’s was a decade characterized by themes of modernism

Themes of sexuality, technology, and social progress were also prominent during these times

Langston Hughes (1902 - 1967)One of the earliest innovators of the

then-new literary art form called jazz poetry

Known for his insightful, colorful portrayals of black life in America

Most American poets were turning inward, while Hughes was turning outward staying to his own personal experiences (An actual story)

He wrote novels, short stories and plays, as well as poetry, and is also known for his engagement with the world of jazz and the influence it had on his writing

Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961)Served in World War 1 as an

ambulance driver

Worked in journalism before publishing his story collection In Our Time

Most outstanding novel was The Old Man and the Sea

liked to portray soldiers, hunters, bullfighters - tough, at times primitive people whose courage and honesty are set against the brutal ways of modern society
