Dear Neighbours,

I hope you’ve all been enjoying the lovely summer. I

know this is a bit early for an ‘Autumn’ issue, so lets

hope we’ve still got a bit of fair weather yet. As I write

the Raft Race has just taken place - congratulations to

The Steamboat for their winning performance. It was

great to see Lossiemouth bursting with activity and

visitors. I wonder what the editors of Lossiemouth’s

summer journal of old, The Bulger, would have made of

it all? See page 26 and have a chuckle (esp. at the

tennis club dance at the Baths, nowadays the Beach

Bar!).

Our Community Council are doing all they can to

ensure Lossie stands out as a vibrant and thriving town

- see page 37 for details. An you’ll no doubt be pleased

to learn that the lighthouse should now be open to the

public, thanks to the hard work of the Covesea

Lighthouse Community Company - see page 6 .

Therefore rather an appropriate front cover don’t you

think; thank you to Levi Maddison for providing it. Not

only can you visit the lighthouse, but very soon many

interesting Lossiemouth buildings will be open to the

public on 6 Sep for Doors Open Day. See what’s going

on on page 11.

Now I’m sure everyone was shocked and saddened to

learn of the devastating fire at the Tee Shack. The

Burnett family would like to thank all those who have

provided support. The Golf Course is still very much

open, you can find their ad on page 19. Other new

advertisers to look out for are Mieles on page 13,

Footworks Podiatry and Chiropody on page 26, Miss

Sparkle on page 29 and Geoff’s Taxis on page 31.

Donations from this issue will go to Lossiemouth Boys’

Brigade, The Lossiemouth RNLI Fundraising Branch,

Oxfam’s South Sudan Crisis Appeal and Christian Aid’s

Gaza Emergency Appeal. If you’re organisation would

like to be considered for a future issue let me know.

Finally thanks to the Lossiemouth Senior Citizens Bus

Trust walking group for delivering this issue.

See you in the run up to Christmas … Nicky Slater

Opening imminently It’s been a long time in coming, but at last the Covesea Lighthouse is hoping to open to the public, albeit initially in a limited manner. Completed in 1846, the Lighthouse was manned until 1984 when automation meant that the keepers were no longer required and the switching on and off of the lamp could be done remotely from the Northern Lighthouse Board

headquarters in Edinburgh. With the advent of new technology, the addition of a North Cardinal Buoy next to the Halliman Skerries allowed the lamp to be switched off in 2012.

Access to the Lighthouse was always at the discretion of the Lighthouse Keepers, and as such there was never total public access to the tower. With the support of the local community there was a desire to get this wonderful building into public hands. The Lossiemouth Business Association helped form the Covesea Lighthouse Community Company Ltd, which was established to buy the property, always with the intention of getting it open to the public for the first time. With the support of government funding the Lighthouse was bought in 2013. Since then there has been a lot of work done to allow progress towards public opening. Safety

requirements are much stricter for public access and so there has been much time and money spent getting the building up to the necessary standards. Starting soon limited visiting parties will be given a guided tour of the tower, and there is a desire to build on this experience. With the induction of more support staff there is a hope to expand access to all.

Over the winter period there is also further expansion due with the addition of an RNAS and RAF Heritage Centre. Hopefully there will be a facility which will house a museum to the aviation heritage of Moray. With support of the MOD Community Covenant fund it’s hoped to have another interesting display in the grounds of the lighthouse, and perhaps a static display aircraft.

Due to practicalities and dimensions of the Lighthouse, access is on an appointment basis only. To find out if we are now actually open and, if so, to book an appointment, you should contact the Lighthouse Manager by email at [email protected] or by phone on 01343 810664. Whilst groups will be welcome, access to the tower is limited to 8

people at most at any one time.

For All Your Sewing Needs

Friendly, efficient service based in Lossiemouth

We all need decent clothes, and I don’t think I’m alone in also enjoying a browse around the shops and picking up a bargain off the sale rail. In fact

the vast majority of us love a bit of retail therapy. But the reality is that there’s now a huge, multi-billion pound garment industry in place supplying our high street shops. However cheap clothes for

us no doubt means misery for someone else ...

I’ve been concerned about where my clothes come from for a while now. News reports talk about poor conditions for garment workers in the

Far East, and few will forget the horrendous collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh last year. I decided I wanted to understand more and actually do something to support garment

workers.

What I discovered was that in factories across

Asia the people who make our clothes live in poverty, usually earning just half of what they need to meet their basic needs. Factories often pose fire and safety risks, and workers toil long

hours just to make ends meet. In the UK most high street fashion brands have the commitment to pay a living wage written

into their ethical codes, but little is being done to deliver this. If you consider an

average £30 T-shirt, the shop takes £15, the garment worker

gets 24p!

A massive international campaign is

currently taking place. The aim is to make a living wage a reality. The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) is an alliance of

organizations in 16 European countries and

is a major driving force behind this campaign. Scottish Education and Action for Development (SEAD), and

Labour Behind the Label (LBL), both

based in the UK, are part of this CCC international network. CCC is dedicated to improving working conditions and supporting the empowerment of workers in

the global garment industry. I was recently accepted as a Regional Coordinator for LBL, volunteering a few hours of my time each month. I support the international

campaigns but also have the freedom to follow my own path. There are some great school resources available linking the garment industry subject into the national

curriculum, and in the coming academic year I hope to be running workshops in schools.

On the International Campaign front, the struggle for justice for those who lost loved

ones and suffered life-changing injuries when the Rana Plaza factory collapsed in April 2013 continues. 1129 people died and over 2000 people were injured. The PAY

UP! campaign is targeting clothing brands who used Rana Plaza but have not paid into the compensation fund. One of the biggest

UK names to so far refuse is Matalan. I visited my local Matalan store, talked to staff and customers and

gave a letter to the Store Manager. Matalan even

refused to attend a recent UK Government meeting on compensation.

Significant changes are happening. The Bangladesh Safety Accord is now in place following Rana Plaza. Signed by many high

street brands, it ensures buildings are independently inspected and owners are legally accountable. Cambodian workers are driving change through mass

demonstrations. In the UK we, the consumer, can drive change by holding clothing

companies to account.

We can use our voice and power as citizens to pressure these billion dollar companies to play fair. Big brands do listen to their customers and when enough people join together, change

happens. To find out more visit www.labourbehindthelabel.org and www.sead.org.uk. You can subscribe to their newsletters or perhaps get more involved,

anything from signing a petition to holding a clothes swap event. SEAD are also looking for more Regional Coordinators so if you think you may be interested in developing a role you feel

comfortable with, please contact Jeni Mackay at jeni.sead.org.uk.

Emma Dyke LBL Regional Coordinator

Update

Since this article was written, Matalan has finally succumbed to campaign pressure and given an undisclosed amount to the UN Rana Plaza Compensation fund. The tipping point

came when Labour Behind the Label partnered with the organisation 38 degrees, and the campaign went into full throttle. Thousands of people bombarded Matalan with emails, phone

calls, Twitter and Facebook messages. Matalan’s inexcusable behaviour was thrust into the limelight, and they realized that the company could no longer avoid addressing the

issue at hand. On Friday, August 1, 2014, Matalan was added to the list of donors to the UN Rana Plaza Compensation Fund. Matalan has yet to publicly disclose the amount of their

contribution, and campaign groups intend to continue to pressure them to ensure that they donated a fair amount. Such campaigns really do work thanks to the power of collective action!

Team RAFBF Lossiemouth are a group of

volunteers who help raise funds and the profile of the RAF

Benevolent Fund locally. The RAFBF are the Royal Air Force's leading welfare charity, and offer welfare and support to serving RAF personnel and their families, as well as RAF

veterans. The level of support they give is wide ranging, from marriage and debt counselling to disabled home modifications and respite care, and with no government

support they rely heavily on fundraising and donations to continue with their work. Team RAFBF Lossiemouth have been along to many locally arranged events this summer already,

including Moray Motorfun, Forres Armed Forces Day and Forres Vintage Theme Day. We have also been supporting some great local fundraisers in their own challenges,

including a team of volunteers who trekked up Ben Nevis in July, raising £2,800, and a mad group of ladies who canoed down the River

Spey in 4 days, raising over £1,000 already. This September we have a team of 4 personnel from RAF Lossiemouth called The

RAF Way Round, who are heading off around 39 MOD bases, covering 3,000 miles in just seven days, culminating in a big finish at the Highland Military Tattoo in Fort George on 7th

September!

They have already raised over £3,000 for the RAF Benevolent Fund and hope to reach £10k through the support of their local sponsors,

including Windswept Brewing. To find out more, or to get involved with fundraising for the RAF Benevolent Fund locally, please get in touch with Karen on 01343 813999 or email

[email protected]. To find out more about the RAF Benevolent Fund, please visit their website www.rafbf.org.

This year Lossiemouth’s annual Flower Show will be held on Saturday 20 September from 1pm - 4.30pm. Last year, due to work on the main

sports hall, the flower show was moved to the school drama hall, and this will continue to be our venue for the foreseeable future. This hall is very convenient for the teas, and we hope it will

prove popular with competitors and visitors alike.

Once again there are sections for everyone,

whether you’re a gardener, a baker or interested in arts and crafts. Last year we had a wonderful entry of paintings in every medium, which delighted all who visited the show. The

children’s sections are always popular with various clubs too, encouraging children to show off their handiwork and baking skills, so please do encourage them by coming along to see their

efforts.

If you’re an enthusiastic gardener, there are sections on all aspects of horticulture, from fruit and vegetables to specially grown flowers or a bunch cut from the border. The schedule has

interesting titles for both the novice and experienced flower arranger ... so why not have a go. If your gardening is limited to a pot plant bring that along - there are extensive classes for

plants both large and small.

Or if you have no horticultural expertise you could enter the baking or jam section, with numerous entries from cakes to clootie dumplings; and for those who enjoy handicrafts

there’s an extensive range of classes to enter from knitting to card making.

There are new judges this year, who will be ready for a large number of entries in all sections, so we hope to see you setting up from 6.30pm on Friday 19th, and 7.30am on the

Saturday morning. Schedules are available from the library and in shops, or alternatively phone 813397.

If you’ve never been to the flower show before then it really is worthwhile popping down to see

the wonderful displays. Come along anytime from 1pm (prize giving at 2.30pm). Admission just £1.

While we’ve been out doors enjoying the glorious sunshine over the summer months we need to be aware of ticks, small insects which

can cause disease. Health Protection Scotland are reporting an increase in ticks this year, thought to be the result of the dry and mild winter we enjoyed here in Moray last year.

Ticks. Ticks like living in a moist, shady

environment. They are found in wooded areas,

in fallen leaves, undergrowth and long grass. They normally don’t go higher than one

metre off the ground.

What to do if you get bitten by a tick. The

tick should be removed as soon as possible as evidence shows that if it is removed within 24 hours there is very little chance it will transmit disease. The tick should be grasped with

tweezers as close to the skin as possible. With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from the skin, without twisting it. Wash your hands and disinfect the tweezers and the area of the

bite. There are also commercial tick removers available from all local chemists which are simple to use.

Preventing infection from tick bites.

- Wear light coloured clothing; this will help you spot ticks.

- Tuck trousers into socks. - Walk along the centre of paths. - Check regularly for ticks, both when out and when you return home. - Check pets for ticks and remove.

- Consider the use of insect repellent on clothes and exposed skin.

Lyme disease. Lyme disease

is an infection caused by being bitten by an infected tick. Only a small percentage of ticks carry

the bacteria (germs), which cause Lyme disease. The first and typical symptom is usually a distinctive rash that spreads out

Page 19: The lossie local autumn 14

19 Please mention The Lossie Local when responding to ads

from the site of the tick bite. Left untreated the bacteria can spread to other areas of the body. In some cases this can cause serious

symptoms - often months after the initial tick bite. A course of antibiotics will usually clear the infection.

The bacterium that causes Lyme disease is not passed from person to person. Most ticks in the UK are not infected by the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Therefore, most

tick bites will not cause Lyme disease.

What to do if you develop a fever or a rash

after a tick bite. Visit your surgery and you

may need to be prescribed a course of antibiotics.

More information on staying safe in the

summer is available from the Health Protection Scotland website http://www.documents.hps.scot.nhs.uk/giz/

TH E FACT OF T HE M ATT ER IS — The business men of Lossiemouth will be glad to

learn that, in the near future, they are to have communication by telephone with the great centres of commerce. Between our town and Elgin such communication is to be established soon, and, within

a year, extended to Inverness. Imagine our busy and pushing tradesmen, in the whirl of their business and the rush in their offices, calmly dictating by word of mouth to their still greater brother-commercialists in

Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London. What a boon! And how it will facilitate matters! Within a few short years Lossiemouth will have undergone quite a revolution. It will be littered with telephones and

other machinery of a similar nature; and visitors will know it no more as the quiet little place to which they used to come for a holiday.

Inverness and Nairn are in a great way just now over the lack of visitors, and the inhabitants of those worthy places are wondering why the numbers are

less than in former years. The reason is quite obvious - they come to Lossiemouth. “The place is just full; we nivver had sae mony,” said one good-wife to another, as she complacently folded her arms. And it

really is no wonder, seeing that Lossiemouth has so many charms.

LO SSIE N OTES AN D N EWS A Dance was given by the Tennis Club last Friday

night in the Baths, and was an unqualified success. The floor was in perfect condition, the dancers

energetic, the music excellent; and the refreshments, graciously dispensed by the matrons present, were much appreciated. Dancing began about eight o’clock, and was carried on with great zest until two

in the morning. The genial Secretary, to whose untiring efforts the success of the evening was in large measure due, deserves the thanks of all. But, would it not be possible to reach the Baths by a road!

- we say a road advisedly, as at present there is absolutely none. On a fine moonlight night no one would complain of having to walk on the grass; but every night is not fine, nor even always moonlight,

and consequently it is rather hard, especially upon ladies, to be obliged to tramp through long wet grass before reaching their destination. Something might surely be done to improve this state of matters, for the

Baths are much patronised by those who ‘trip on the light fantastic,’ and so no effort should be spared to facilitate anything that tends to encourage social intercourse amongst Lossiemouth residents and

visitors.

Last week the small line boats proceeded regularly to

the fishing ground, and landed 185 boxes. The prices ruled from 3s to 12s per box. On Monday Mr Wm. Stewart, fish salesman, sold some cod at 2s 7½d each.

‘Good-For-You’ Ice Cream The weather has been so hot in the last few days, and no doubt many of you will treat yourselves to an ice cream to cool down a little bit. So I thought

I’d treat you to a couple of recipes for ice creams that are just a little bit different:

Lucuma-Rum Ice Cream (courtesy of navitasnaturals.com) This is a dairy-free ice cream with natural sweeteners lucuma powder and maple

syrup. Lucuma is a sub-tropical, orange-yellow fleshed fruit native to Peru. The powder is derived from pitted and low-

temperature dehydrated whole fruits, making it suitable for raw diets and

vegans. Lucuma powder is naturally sweet and has a

distinct maple-like flavour.

Despite its sweet taste, Lucuma has a very low Glycemic index – making it an ideal healthy sweetener. It contains high levels

of carotene, B Vitamins and iron. Also containing protein and trace minerals, this all-natural sweetening powder can not only

help stabilize blood sugar, but also curb cravings. Due to its natural antibiotic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, the

flesh of the lucuma fruit is a common source of natural healing and medicines among the native South American people

where the fruit grows.

Ingredients

⅓ cup + 2 tbsp lucuma powder (available in good health food shops) ¼ cup maple syrup

14 oz coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp rum (optional)

pinch sea salt

Although it's always tempting to use light coconut milk, this ice cream needs the full-

Wake Up To Malawi Traidcraft’s mission is to fight poverty through trade, practicing and promoting approaches to trade that help poor people in developing countries transform their lives. It was established in 1979 as a Christian response to poverty, and combines a trading company and a development charity, building lasting relationships with producers, supporting people to trade out of poverty and

working to bring about trade justice.

Traidcraft is thrilled to be teaming up with the Scotland Malawi Partnership to promote Malawian Mzuzu coffee to the people of Scotland. The Scottish Malawi partnership recognise that there are a huge number of Scottish individuals and organisations with links to Malawi. There have been strong civil society links between the two countries for more than 150 years, beginning with David Livingstone’s journey to Malawi in 1859. Increasingly the partnership want to focus on trade in terms of making interventions in Malawi more sustainable. Malawian Mzuzu Coffee is made from some of the finest beans in the Malawian Highlands. A single pack costs £3.95 and can be ordered online at www.traidcraftshop.co.uk, alternatively call 0191 491 0855 for a mail order catalogue.

Traidcraft Big Supper During September and October Traidcraft supporters up and down the country will be organising a Traidcraft Big Supper. Harvest is a time of celebration in the UK, a time to remember all the good things that we have and to be thankful for food on our table. It’s also a time to remember and share with others who are not so fortunate.

This year, why not use harvest to show your support for some of the world’s poorest producers and raise vital funds to help harvests flourish all over the world by hosting a Traidcraft Big Supper. You could serve some Malawian Mzuzu coffee too! Email [email protected] or call 0191 497 6445 for more information.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

Lossiemouth ended the 2013-14 season with a defeat away to Cove Rangers. The Aberdeen side began the season as defending champions but endured a tortuous campaign, letting slip

their title to Brora Rangers before the Christmas decorations came down, and face a thorough rebuilding job during the summer. They limped to a 3-0 victory over Lossie, who could neither

catch those above or be caught by those below, and for whom the game represented the final hurdle ahead of a welcome summer break.

The usual round of pre-season fixtures began with a home tie against former SHFL

rivals Elgin City. The Black and Whites threatened to turn pink in the baking heat of Grant Park, but the sweltering

temperature did little to slow the League Two side who

raced into a two goal lead before half time. The sizeable crowd continued to bask in the sun while the goals continued to flow, as Elgin

bagged a third before Lossiemouth added a late consolation thanks to Jordan McBain.

The warm-up continued with a second home game against a Ross County youth side. The

visitors took the lead in the first half through Tony Dingwall and saw the game out until the interval, but a stirring start from the Coasters saw them equalise and take the lead within ten

minutes of the second half commencing. Ryan Green drew his side level before Chris Ross put Lossie into the lead, where they’d stay until full time.

Pre-season fixtures continue through the month

on July, with games against Lossiemouth United and Dufftown United on the menu ahead of the North of Scotland Cup tie against

Fort William at Grant Park on July 26th.

Various sponsorship

packages are available for the coming season, with prices starting from as little as £2 per week for pitchside advertising.

Ball, match, player, programme, kit and mascot sponsorship opportunities are all available. For more details,

contact a club committee member on match days, or check the club website.

The clubs supporters now have their own internet forum, which is used for

discussions on all matters relating to the club and the Press and Journal Highland League. The forum has

become very popular with fans throughout the Highland League and

contains information on all levels of local football, including local

junior, welfare and womens clubs and leagues. To sign up and have your say,

visit www.fitbanorth.com. You can also follow the club on Twitter

@lossiemouthfc. Fixtures for the coming season have been released and Lossiemouth have been handed

a home game against Keith on the opening day of the league season. The Coasters make their first trip away from Grant Park the following week when they visit Christie Park to play

Huntly, scene of a famous League Cup quarter-final win last season. The league has redesigned the fixture list to take account of better weather early in the season and, as a

result, Lossiemouth will play at least seven times during the first month of the season. In addition, the

draw for the early rounds of the Scottish Cup will be made in late July, details of which will be posted on the

club website and Twitter feed.

Forthcoming fixtures…

Community Councillors visit Perthshire

village. A group of Lossiemouth community

councillors and staff from Moray Council's community support unit have travelled to the village of Comrie in Perthshire to learn how the community has created a community

development trust with assets of over £2million.

Immediately after the community council elections in Moray last year, Lossiemouth's

community councillors have been working hard towards bringing community groups throughout the town together. Their plan has been to create a cohesive single group that could

oversee new improvements in Lossiemouth, enhancing facilities that already exist as well as finding the funding to create new facilities to enhance activities for visitors and residents to

the town.

When it was noted what Comrie had achieved with a population of less than half that in Lossiemouth, a request went out to the Perthshire village and members of the board of

their community trust were more than happy to pass on a few tips. A spokesman for the Lossiemouth Community Council said, "We saw at first hand the dramatic changes that can be

made in a community when they get themselves organised and work together towards a common aim. Comrie is one of a number of similar community trust's in Scotland who use

the energy and passion of members of their local community and blend it with those who have business, financial, legal and organisation skills and knowledge to maximise funding

opportunities. Our community councillors came away with a clear vision on the direction that is already being taken in Lossiemouth."

A draft development plan has been completed by Community Councillors and will be presented to representatives from groups, clubs and

organisations in the town when they meet again

in the Town Hall on September 2 at 7pm. It is hoped that the formation of a Lossiemouth Community Development Trust will be agreed that evening with the immediate task of creating

a management board and individual working groups reporting to that board on a range of specific projects for the improvement of Lossiemouth.

Seafest. Born from the desire within the

Lossiemouth Community Council to spark new

life into the town through all groups, clubs and associations working together, the inaugural 'Seafest' was held in the town at the start of July - and was a roaring success.

Councillor John Cowe was a driving force

behind the event which was supported by the Moray Chamber of Commerce who jointly organised Seafest with the community council. Councillor Cowe said, "It was an idea that

blossomed into a two-day event for the young and not so young of Lossiemouth to enjoy. It is all part of our long-term aim to generate funds and 'polish the jewel' of Moray."

Seafest is seen as the start of a new chapter for Lossiemouth, aimed firmly at raising the profile

of the town as a place to visit again and again. The event drew thousands to the town, both for a celebration themed dinner on the Friday

evening and a 'food and fun' day at Station Park the following day.

Community councillor Donna Milne said, "The Seafest team were delighted to have the support of the groups in the erecting and dismantling of the stalls for the Food & Fun Day at Station

Park. It was overwhelming to see so many people turn up to support our first event. Various groups and charities filled the stalls and hopefully benefited from their effort.

"Our Seafood supper on the Friday evening was a sell out. The Stotfield Hotel provided a lovely

meal and everyone enjoyed the entertainment provided by local entertainers that followed. Due to the success of Seafest 2014, which was very much born from the initiative to have groups and

organisations in the town working together, the dedicated team are already planning Seafest 2015."

Citizen of the Year. The Community Council

have begun the search for the 2014

Lossiemouth 'Citizen of the Year', and are seeking the assistance of people in the town to inform the selection process. Each year Lossiemouth has awarded a member of our

community for work they do in the town 'above and beyond' what would be described as normal. It has always been a very difficult decision to take, with so many people in the town working

so hard and selflessly for their community.

This year the community council would like to hear from people in the town on who they believe deserves to receive this accolade. There is no age-bar on who can become Citizen of the

Year - just let us know who you believe is worthy of the honour and why.

Nominations should be made to Lossiemouth Community Council's chairman Mike Mulholland by email to [email protected] or by calling

Mike on 01343 813787. Nominations can also be made in writing and sent to Mike at 11 Malin Place, Lossiemouth, IV31 6TQ.

friends from Kinloss Barracks. I hope everyone who participated or attended the raft race had a

great time in what is a highlight of the local social calendar.

It continues to be a time of considerable change on station with the future for RAF Lossiemouth remaining bright. The arrival of another Typhoon squadron, in the shape of 1 (Fighter) Squadron at

the start of September, will eventually lead to 3 Typhoon squadrons being based here by spring 2015. September also heralds the transfer of Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North duties by RAF

Lossiemouth from RAF Leuchars. This will see a continuation of the 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week

protection of UK airspace by the Royal Air Force that has been in

place for decades.

Looking further ahead to October, RAF Lossiemouth will once again host Exercise Joint Warrior and welcome personnel and aircraft from

across NATO in order to hone and test equipment and tactics within realistic scenarios. Whilst I appreciate that the extra influx of aircraft to the local area for 10 days may cause some

inconvenience, I would like to thank you in advance for your support and patience in helping us to deliver world class training to front line operational crews.

Finally our thoughts will inevitably turn towards the annual Remembrance Day commemorations, of

particular poignancy in this the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One. I am sure that like me, you will be able to take the time to remember the actions of those individuals who have paid the

ultimate sacrifice in order for us to enjoy the freedom that we hold so dear today.

To keep abreast of what is happening at your nearest RAF Station please follow us at http://facebook.com/raflossiemouth and on our Twitter

account: @RAFLossiemouth. My Twitter account is @LossieStnCdr.

Welcome to this year’s

Autumn edition of the magazine. Again it has

been a busy period for the station, welcoming 6 Squadron to their new home, officially starting the Moray leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay and recognising the service of all members of the

Armed Forces in National and Regional Armed Forces Day events. Thank you for your support during these events, without which many would not have been possible. Of particular note is the

individual contribution of Flight Lieutenant Walter Sutherland who was recently honoured with being

an official Baton Bearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay in

the same week that he received an MBE for his considerable charity work on and off station.

The Lossiemouth Raft race will also be completed by the time this article is published and I am certain

that the reigning champions, Motorised Transport (MT) Section here at Lossie, will give their all against stiff local competition and our Army

THE FILLING STATION

Every second Saturday of the

month @ Lossie Town Hall, 7pm

Despite media claims that modern Church is in decline, Lossiemouth

and Moray enjoy a wonderful tradition of vibrant and fun

church life. People in the North East really do have a

heart for something deeper and something more meaningful than what life is

commonly claimed to offer.

The “Filling Station” is perhaps the newest

demonstration of this depth and welcomes

Christians from churches all over Lossiemouth and beyond to Buckie, Aberdeen, Cullen, Portsoy, Forres and Inverness etc.

The Filling Station is not a new “church” and is keen to make that very clear. It is, however, a

monthly fresh expression of church for those that are interested in a life of Faith or those wishing to stretch out into exciting areas of Christian service and life.

The idea for these monthly gatherings and the

“Filling Station” movement started off only a few years ago in the hearts of a bunch of wonderful Anglican Bishops and Ministers in the South West of England.

A couple of years on and there are now almost

60 gatherings with 3 in Scotland and a couple more coming every month or so. It really is exciting to see this initiative take hold across Scotland over the last year.

All “TFS” gatherings try to secure quirky buildings and comfortable surroundings … always with

great food and coffee. Most groups are also very active in demonstrating the supernatural reality of your Creator, with teams of men and women who are gifted at helping you see and believe that

life’s blessings and joy can be yours!

The Lossiemouth TFS gang are already almost into their second year and have already moved to larger premises to welcome the folk that now come from far and wide to share an exciting night

together.

On Saturday 16 August we were lucky enough to have an amazing man coming to speak to us – Sandy Miller – who helped launch the famous Alpha Course with Nikky Gumble. What a treat! Our speaker for September is Don Latham on the

13th. Don was here a year ago and had everyone rolling in laughter with his stories, whilst at the same time delivering powerful message and ministry time.

If you would like more information on the Filling Station in Lossiemouth, call Elizabeth Brooks on 07772 800315.

It’s Your Choice

On 18 September the people of Scotland will be asked to answer a straightforward yes or no question. Yet the outcome will affect our nation for generations to come. Both sides of the debate, “Yes Scotland” and “Better Together,” have claimed that they can deliver the brighter future for Scotland; who should we believe? No matter how persuasive the argument, come the day an individual will enter a booth alone and make a choice where to put

the cross.

Yes, No, spoiled paper or choose not to vote, the moment of decision will pass and Scotland will have its answer. When the results of the referendum are finally announced many people will find that they have to live with a choice that they did not

make.

There is another matter, with immensely greater

consequences, that requires your urgent attention. Read the issues carefully and make your decision accordingly. Once again it will involve you alone and your choice in relation to a cross. Unlike the referendum, your choice in this matter will only affect you, if you make the wrong decision, you will have no one

to blame but yourself.

In the Bible, God reminds us that we have all sinned, we have broken His laws. We are familiar with the fact that broken rules have consequences; the result of our sin is eternal separation from God. That would have been the final, hopeless future for us all had Jesus Christ not intervened. When He died on

Gospel Hall, James Street

the cross He suffered the

consequences for our sin and is now offering complete

forgiveness and reconciliation to God. Will you believe God,

accepting the terms of His offer and receive the eternal

benefits that He has prepared?

YES – Admit to God that you

are a sinner; believe that Jesus Christ died on account of that

sin; put your faith in the Lord

Jesus as your Saviour.

NO – Reject Jesus Christ and

His offer. Keep putting off your

decision. Nothing will change; you will remain separated from

God and endure the eternal consequences of your personal

sin.

It’s your choice!

Say “yes” to God’s offer of

salvation, and know that whatever the outcome on 18

September you are “better together” with Christ as your

Saviour.

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer

to the information in it for a much longer period than they would, say, a newspaper.” (Jeffrey Lee Roofing Services 815343)

“Just to say I was in Lossiemouth on holiday recently and found several past copies of your magazine in my self-catering accommodation. I thought the contents were brilliant and

gave me lots of insight into the town and its local businesses and services.” (email received from holidaymaker)

The Lossie Local - Why Advertise?

About The Lossie Local

The Lossie Local was established in May

2008, home produced by a Lossie resident, with the aim of disseminating community information and providing an affordable way for local businesses to promote themselves.

Community Focus

Much of the community news, events and editorials included in the magazine is done so free of charge, a great way for local organisations to promote themselves and

normally only available at great expense in other publications. Local groups deliver the magazine for a £350 donation, and at least £200 each issue is donated to local

and national charities.

Affordable Advertising

The Lossie Local has deliberately kept prices low so local businesses can afford

to advertise. Where else can you get a quarter page advert from as little as £29!
