To Whom it May Concern: The Lonely Little Cactus is a children’s picture storybook about a cactus that feels lonely living in the desert. Through a series of colourful interactions with desert dwellers, the little cactus learns strategies to cope with feelings of loneliness. The book is both entertaining and educational and is aimed at kids aged 4-8 years. The underlying message of the book is that loneliness is a normal common emotion that is manageable and overcome. Also, coping styles are unique to the person and that often more than one strategy is needed to manage a difficult situation. A book on loneliness and belonging is timely and important for the following reasons:

1. We are facing a global loneliness epidemic

• Numerous global studies report that we are facing an international loneliness epidemic. Government intervention and public awareness is gaining momentum in Australia, the UK and elsewhere.

• Data on 29 million 15-year-olds from 72 different countries informs us that an alarming 1 in 4 students report that they do not feel a sense of belonging to school. This figure also represents a concerning trend: students’ sense of belonging has declined rapidly since 2003, with the most significant drop between 2012 and now.

• The number of over 50s suffering from loneliness will reach two million in the UK by 2026.

• Loneliness and social isolation are health risk factors equal to smoking, obesity, heavy drinking and high blood pressure. They have a direct impact on our lifespan and how prone we are to infectious disease.

• Academics and activists in the area are calling for a proactive and preventative approach with a great deal of the literature emphasising that we need to start as early as possible.

2. Political Climate

• In 2018, the UK appointed a minister for loneliness. Australia has established the Australian Coalition to End Loneliness (ACEL) comprising 10 universities and 20 not for profits). There have been recent calls for Australia to follow the lead set by the UK.

• The federal government has invested a considerable amount of money into loneliness research this year. We will see continued, sustained discussion of this issue well into the future as findings and results are released over time.

• There has been increasing media interest in belonging and loneliness and a book on the topic could tap into the ongoing momentum and social interest.

Best regards,

Dr Kelly Allen, Educational and Developmental Psychologist

The Lonely Little Cactus A story about friendship and coping

Deep inside a dusty desert,

Where sandy dunes extend.

Lives a lonely little cactus

Longing for a friend.

Between the jagged mountain bluffs

In valleys sparse and dry

Some visitors go tumbling

While others swoop and fly.

No one to call a friend.

"Alone", the little cactus sighs.

His salty tears evaporate

Under blazing barren skies.

As the golden sun sunk down one night,

Behind the cliffs so steep,

A curious bat overheard the sound

Of a little cactus weep.

From an ancient twisted tree,

The bat gave explanation:

"While crying can be soothing,

It won't change your situation".

"When I'm sad," the bat went on,

"I like to tame my thinking,

And think of all the happy things

That keep my mood from sinking.”

So little cactus counted blessings,

Page 4: The Lonely Little Cactus · Australia, the UK and elsewhere. ... 2018 Frankie Good Stuff Awards, Morrison Media, Finalist for The Lonely Little Cactus 2017 The University of Melbourne,

Through the darkened night.

“I'm grateful for the sun and moon,

And flowers bold and bright.”

From arid shrubs to rocky spurs,

The scorching sun unveiled

A cactus who was bothered,

That his loneliness prevailed.

A passing doe saw cactus,

angry. It was clear.

"Anger will not fix these things,”

Said the kindly deer.

"When I feel angry I do things

That make me want to smile.

I wallow deep in eucalypt,

and grasslands for a while".

So cactus sang a desert song

To dunes where sands collided.

For singing brought him pleasure.

And angry thoughts subsided.

But where anger had departed,

Worry took its place.

"I may never find a friend," he said,

Concern across his face.

From the prickly desert brush,

An echidna poked through.

"Don’t worry cactus, when I’m lonely

Talking helps me through".

Cactus and the echidna

Talked all through the day.

Until the starry desert sky,

Came outside to play.

They talked about their worries.

Shared prickly tales and spiky laughs

‘Till sadness, anger, and loneliness

Were banished to the past.

There are many ways to cope with

Trials and tribulations.

And several ways to tackle

Troubling situations.

But sometimes it’s persistence

That helps to get you through

When at first it doesn’t work

You just try something new.

When tired eyes grew heavy,

The cactus slept so sound.

Because even in the desert

Friendships can be found.

A Note for Parent and Educators This story presents an engaging narrative of a cactus that struggles to make

friends. He feels lonely and learns quickly that loneliness is not remedied by

simply having others around and before he can overcome his feelings of

loneliness, be needs to cope with them first. The Little Cactus discovers that

not all coping skills are helpful and are in fact unique to the individual. What

works for one person, may not work for another. When he engages in a range

of coping strategies (some more helpful than others), he finds a strategy that

works. And in doing so, he makes a life long friend.

Young children face daily challenges that require them to cope with stressful.

Some of these challenges may seem trivial to adults, but to young children

unable to regulate their own emotions, they can be catastrophic problems.

Young children need guidance and education to learn to social and emotional

competencies in the same way they require assistance to learn literacy and

numeracy skills.

This book is for children aged between 4 and 8 and aims to be a conversation

point for parents and educators to open discussion with young children about

managing emotions and coping with problems.

Some suggested sample questions are:

• What things have made you feel sad, angry or worried in the past?

• What coping skills worked for cactus? What coping skills did not work

for cactus?

• Why is crying, getting angry, or worrying unhelpful?

• What are some unhelpful ways you have coped with a problem? Did

they work? Why didn't they work?

• What are helpful coping skills that have worked for you?

• What are some helpful coping skills you might like to try that cactus

used? What is a helpful coping skill you might try next time you have a

worry or problem?
