Past EventsHail Caesar – 28mm Ancients by Warlords

By Pete AtackGreek Hoplites vs Roman Legionaries

On a non-descript field dotted with uneven

ground, sparse stands of trees, the ruins of a

wall that once belonged to a temple, and a

small piece of high ground, two ancient

enemies formed lines of combatants.

This was the first time the group has taken

the Greeks to battle – so you have to do it

right, right? Organizing two 800-point

armies three of us decided to fight a true

heavy infantry battle as opposed to seeing if

the heavies could withstand the charge of

some barbarian warband. The Greeks

fielded 5 divisions : 1 of Spartans, 2 of Greek

hoplites, 1 of levy hoplites, and 1 of archers

and peltasts for a total of 21 units of hoplite

heavy infantry and 6 units of light infantry /

archers. The Romans deployed two large

divisions of auxiliaries on the flanks with 4

divisions of legionaries in the center. Some

special scenario rules meant that the Greek

light divisions and a Roman legion division

would enter randomly as reinforcements.

Also – holding the high ground and walls of

the temple gave Victory Point, Command,

and Morale bonuses – otherwise why fight

over a desolate field???

Page 8: The Lone Star Dispatch A note from a member of LHSM Board of … · 2016. 7. 7. · Hail Caesar –28mm Ancients by Warlords By Pete Atack Greek Hoplites vs Roman Legionaries On a

Past Events (continued)Hail Caesar – 28mm Ancients by WarlordsIn the center, the Spartans and a hoplite division slowly moved up awaiting the Roman

charge behind their long spears. On the Greek right flank the levy hoplites, outnumbered,

waited as the auxiliaries closed in while to the left the auxiliaries failed to move quickly

allowing Greek hoplites to close in on the hill as opposed to having to fight up it.

Across the front, the Greek line was pelted with pilum and javelins before meeting the rush

of Rome’s army. As the lines clashed, most units became locked in melee. Some units on

both sides refused to give ground, others were pushed back but refused to break – both

sides hoped for the reinforcements to arrive quickly. In the center, the Spartans fanatically

held their ground to the point of exhaustion while the Romans enduring just as stoically.

Surprising, the Greek levy found courage and stamina even after their general was killed.

Pushed back as far as they could go they barely held the line, but importantly kept the

Roman auxiliaries from turning the flank and rolling into the center. To their left and hard

fight saw the Romans slowly break but reinforcing legionnaires kept the hoplites from

running amok. On the far left, after sitting on the defense, the Greek hoplites unleashed a

charge that did great damage to the auxiliaries, gaining the initiative and eventually routing

their opponents. As those hoplites turned to the center, the Spartans were beginning to

strain – 2 units killed to a man with most others too fatigued to get into the fight. With the

Romans just as battered, the battle slowed, and Rome would need to wait a bit longer to

dominate the Mediterranean.

Greek win 8-5

TEXICON 2016 Report

By Richard Schwar tzBattle of Brandywine 1777

In 1777, as the British were driving on Philadelphia, General George

Washington positioned his 12,000 strong army behind the Brandywine

Creek. General Howe, with 14,000 men dispatched General Cornwallis to

cross the Brandywine seven miles to the north while Howe would hold

Washington to his front. The plan worked, and in the afternoon, Cornwallis

appeared on Washington’s right flank unopposed! Washington dispatched

General Sullivan with 5 brigades to stop Cornwallis. But just when

Cornwallis appeared to be held in check, Howe launched a frontal assault

across Chad’s Ford, forcing a general retreat. Only the timely rear guard

action by General Nathaniel Greene allowed Washington to slip away to fight

another day. The British marched in Philadelphia.

Our battle recreated the British left wing flanking move by Cornwallis, and the

American’s desperate effort to stop them.

This is the view of Osborne Hill as seen from the American positions at

Birmingham Meeting House…with the British beginning their advance. Part of

the Light Infantry Brigade of General Abercromby are at lower right with the 3rd

and fourth brigades in reserve in the center and right background.

TEXICON 2016 Report

Brandywine (Continued)

Holding the American right were stout Virginia regulars, seen here behind a

wooden fence line awaiting the approach of General Abercrombie’s British Light

Infantry. As the battle unfolded, the American left (seen blurred in the distance)

gave as good as it received from the British Guards and Grenadiers, aided by

some horrific die rolls that went against the Brits. On the American right,

however, Abercromby was aggressive, and engaged the Virginian’s quickly. Not

waiting to face the superior British fire power, the 4th Virginia regiment charged

the Hessian Jagers driving them from the field, and nearly ruining Abercrombie’s

assault!

Here is the 4th Virginia, making impact with the Hessians. The British Light

Infantry were not far behind, and steadied the line.

Brandywine (Continued)

Here are the Lights advancing in place of the hapless Hessians.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their center was soon to be forced by the

incessant British Grenadiers, who loved to unload a volley at close range

and then charge with their bayonets!

The Grenadiers, seen blurred in the distance, have just overrun the New Jersey

Regiment holding Birmingham Meeting house (center distance), and are about to

assault the American main line. They will succeed, forcing a general withdrawal

of the Americans.

All in all, a fun battle that end in results similar to the actual fight…always a

good sign that the rules, Guns of Liberty, were well designed.

I think everyone had a good time and we may even have a few new players with us for future games at the Rat Palace...

Day 1 of teaching/recruiting games at Texicon... guys really enjoyed the system and it turned into a bloodbath. Ridiculous force morale rolls kept the French in it until the end.

Age of the Wolf: A Campaign System for SAGA

Unlike many campaign game systems AotW does not rely on a

map. Rather than bother with how the forces came to meet, the

system focuses on what is most enjoyable and thus most important:

fighting SAGA battles. In that sense this system is more of a scenario

generator. AotW does this by taking the motivation of each Warlord,

their personal traits and special rules and compares this to their stated

strategic concerns for that campaign season to determine which

players will fight battles against each other. Lets take a more detailed

look at this.

A Review by:Martin Zamarripa

The first step in kicking off an

AotW Campaign is to have a meeting

of the Warlords. Here the players

decide on the type of warband they

will field, Viking, Norman, Anglo

Saxon etc. and the name of their

Warlord avatar. (Although the system

was written for Dark Ages SAGA,

there is nothing obvious that indicates

Cross and Crescent warbands would

not work) The next step is the most

important as it will impact the player’s

options throughout the campaign.

Page 15: The Lone Star Dispatch A note from a member of LHSM Board of … · 2016. 7. 7. · Hail Caesar –28mm Ancients by Warlords By Pete Atack Greek Hoplites vs Roman Legionaries On a

Each warlord now declares his

motivation. That is his deepest desire,

his moral compass, or his life’s pursuit

perhaps. However one decides to view

this motivation, there are three choices

available: Land, Wealth or Reputation.

Warlords will keep track of how much

land, wealth and reputation they

accumulate (or lose) during each

campaign season. If Warlords stay true

to their stated motivation and that

particular resource is accumulated in

excess of each of the other two, then

those Warlords receive substantial

bonuses in the form of campaign victory

points. But before charging into battle

to accumulate resources the Warlord’s

personal traits and special rules must

first be determined.

A player may decide to take on the persona of one of the Heroes of the

Viking Age as printed in the original rules set or in any of the supplements.

Alternatively, and more in keeping with the spirit of the system the player can

let the Gods decide. The Warlord will randomly receive two traits out of a pool

of eighteen that in most cases help him in the campaign. Will your avatar be

“War Crafty” regularly springing ambushes on his foes or will he be “Devout”

attracting religious personas to his banner and benefitting from their enlightened

insight? Only the dice will tell. Similarly, one special rule out of a possible

thirteen will be applicable to your Warlord. He may wind up generating three

SAGA dice per turn in battle like a Hero of the Viking Age or he may have a

knack for bribery, disrupting his opponent’s plans in the first turns of battle.

These pieces of the Warlord’s personality remain with him for the duration of

the campaign and may be added to if fate should interfere.

Martin Zamarripa preparesHis SAGA army for battle

Page 16: The Lone Star Dispatch A note from a member of LHSM Board of … · 2016. 7. 7. · Hail Caesar –28mm Ancients by Warlords By Pete Atack Greek Hoplites vs Roman Legionaries On a

With the Warlords thusly

determined, four point warbands are

assembled for the first campaign season

and strategic goals announced. Each

player decides secretly whether to

“Raid” another Warlord to carry off his

wealth, conduct a “Campaign” to strip

someone of their lands or to “Defend”

his own lands to increase his reputation.

When revealed, the strategic aims of all

players are cross-referenced to generate

the type of battles that will be fought.

The Warlords then make arrangements to

fight their battles determining warband

sizes, the hiring of mercenaries, the

scenario to be played and the date and

time that combat will begin.

After the dust settles, a victor is

announced and spoils are distributed,

the casualties are assessed, prisoners

are ransomed back and forth, and

recruitment for the next campaign

season takes place. Then it is time for

the gods to once again meddle in the

affairs of man. Fate will decide if

harvests were good or bad, will the

common people have had enough of

war or will they flock to your banner.

In the course of this season’s

campaign insight into the nature of

war may occur and your Warlord may

gain additional traits and special rules.

After the Gods are done with them

another season is played until the

agreed upon number of seasons is

completed and a new king is crowned.

Page 17: The Lone Star Dispatch A note from a member of LHSM Board of … · 2016. 7. 7. · Hail Caesar –28mm Ancients by Warlords By Pete Atack Greek Hoplites vs Roman Legionaries On a

The Age of the Wolf offers a whole different way to play SAGA. Suicidal

charges have impact beyond the current battlefield. Paying off an invader may be

a wiser choice than engaging in a futile fight. Remaining idle for a season to

husband ones strength and to seek out alliances might pay off in the long run.

Not very Viking at all, but if fighting to the death is your Warlords style, by all

means do so and know that the avatar that replaces him will be honor bound to

avenge his demise. In the Age of the Wolf, death is not the end for a player, but

rather the beginning of another avatar’s saga.

Now take a hard look at your warband. Will it be the weapon that carves

out your kingdom?

SAGA Gaming in Austin Texas

By Pete Atack.

I got together with 3 others to play

some more SAGA last

night. Everyone got in two games,

largely with warbands they had not

played before. In the first round a

Steppe Tribe army used its mobility

and bows to shoot a Crusader army

to pieces in the Champions Of God

scenario. On the adjacent table, a

Pagan Rus warband was

unsuccessful in defending a village

against a marauding Mutatawwia

warband that managed to burn

down three buildings.

Switching opponents, the Pagan

Rus mounted a furious assault on

a Crusader force that was content

to sit back and build its Virtues

before counterattacking and

sweeping the un-Holy hordes from

the battlefield (Champions of God

scenario). Mobile as ever, the

Steppe Tribes swept into the

Middle East and challenged the

Mutatawwia using the Scouts

scenario. I may be corrected, but I

believe the Muslim force decided

against fighting to the end and

withdrew from the field after both

sides suffered some heavy losses. And to the Blind Steppe Tribes

warlord who rebuffed my Crusader

warlord in 2 or 3 trials by combat, I

SALUTE YOU (even though you

can't see it)! Makes for a neat rule

and storyline if you have not looked

into the Steppe Tribes faction.

The group will be at DL again on

July 13th and then again on July

27th.

Warlord Games Day Report

By Casey Pitman

So tonight wraps up the final

night of my first Warlord

Open Games Day here in

the US. I will do a full write in

a Bolt Action Alliance article

but wanted to share a few

pics and musings. Was an

absolutely fantastic time,

Jon Russell puts on a epic event. Many thanks to him and Andrew Chesney for all the work they do to put it together. I have a new limited edition gaming mat and a suit case full of resin warlord vehicles to smuggle back across state lines. I played in the bolt action tournament and have continued to find that we have the greatest community out there. SAGA finds a new home in Austin

Texas: Dragon’s Lair Austin

By Pete Atack

SAGA at Dragon’s Lair – Austin

Gathered several Warlords for an opening

battle at Dragon’s Lair on June 8th (while

several others stayed home, warm, in the

comfort of their shame for failing to meet

the challenge!). On one table a Crusader

warband marched into a Muslim town held

by a fanatic warlord (the “Harry and Burn”

scenario from the new Age of the Wolf

module) intent on burning buildings and

fields.

Pushing into the village, the Crusaders were

initially unable to burn anything – nor were

their prayers heard as they were unable to

truly organize for the battle ahead (failing to

gain their Virtues in a timely manner and

never rolling a “rare” on their SAGA dice

over 7 turns). Moving quickly and sacrificing

men to unlock a ferocious attack, the

Muslims destroyed the Crusader’s knights,

although the cost was high on both sides.

Trying to regain the initiative, the Crusader

warlord moved into the fray but was bested

by his opposing warlord and hearthguard

supporters who chopped him down in a

frenzy (15 hits!?).

SAGA finds a new home in Austin Texas:

Dragon’s Lair Austin (Continued)

On the other table… well I did not do a

great job of monitoring, but a Steppe

Tribe warband full of bow armed cavalry

faced off against an Irish horde. As the

Irish pushed forward, the Steppe nomads

kept to their advantage : mobility and

range. Irish warriors fell under a hail of

arrows as they closed in. While never

closing into melee, the Irish never failed

to advance, but paid a heavy cost for their

determination.

Looking for a match in the future? June

29th, July 13th, and July 27th will see

several of us playing at DL-Austin around

6pm. On the 27th we’ll also be beginning

the campaign for SAGAs Age of the Wolf

module.

All that said, I’d like to say Thank You to

the team at Dragon’s Lair in Austin for

supporting the group with reserved table

space and support for organized events in

the future!

The Crusaders, sensing doom,

managed to hastily burn two buildings,

with one unit moving away and into a

field hoping to avoid the fate of their

comrades. The move brought survival,

a small measure of shame, and a Draw

by not dying!

VPs were 23-23.

Return to Middle Earth – Lord of the Rings

The San Antonio Lord of the Rings gaming group held its annual tournament on 25 June at Dragon’s Lair. Once again we planned the event around the visit of Keith aka “Thorak Okenshield” from Denver. A total of 6 of us played a big game Friday – 24 June, and 9 played in the tournament.

Michael Lisanti won the overall tournament for the second straight year!! Congrats to you Michael and his Orc army.

Art Douglas ran a great show and everyone had a fun time. Thanks to Dragons Lair and Cliff for some great prizes and hosting us – we will see you soon for some more LoTR/Hobbit gaming.

Knight Watch Games (KWG)

Grand Opening:

By Blake Radetsky

Howdy Y'all,

I am Going to kick off my summer gaming gig on Wednesday, July 6th, 6pm - 10pm at Knight Watch Games. So everyone is invited to come out on Wednesday to join in the Red Sand, Blue Sky Roman Gladiator Campaign. I plan on running "Days of Events" on Wednesday Nights. I don't know if it will be every Wednesday, every other Wednesday or once a month that will depend upon y'all, as to what works best for all. But on the 6th you will be a Lanista, we will build your Ludus(Gladiator School) and purchase some Gladiators for your school. Your purpose is to take your school all the way to Rome to fight before the Emperor in the Coliseum for fame and riches and hopefully win freedom for one of your gladiators.

Everyone will begin out in the Fringes of the Empire and work your way to Rome, building fame and experience on your gladiators.

No need to paint anything unless you want to, I should have enough gladiators for everyone to use.So come out on July 6th, as I will explain the campaign rules Andrew expectations and if you decide to join in, then we can build your school of gladiators, for Fame and Wealth!

Cya Blake

KWG was a huge success for a grand opening, I arrived at Noon and left at 10pm. Busy all day until about 9:30. GREAT ambiance, great owners. Still doing some minor construction. Me and my sons have decided that KWG is our "go to" game store. Starting Wednesday, July 6th we will, officially start a Roman Gladiators Campaign using Red Sand, Blue Skies rules. It is 28mm based, we should have enough Glads to start about 10 players if they don't have minis. I think Oscar is going to put them on his BA rotation to host games. I will most likely start a SAGA nite there and various historical miniature wargaming events there too. I really want to help the owner make a go of their store by running games that they might like to stock minis and rules to sell. They have BA, Dreadball, Gates of Antares, that I remember. Hopefully, they will bring in some SAGA stuff and Hail Caesar, Black Powder. They have Lion Rampant rules and I asked them to get Dragon Rampant.

I have been shaming my group for not taking pictures and notes from our games of late so we could contribute. Which explains why I did not do the same…wait, not it does not. L. Saturday we will be running Russians vs Turks on the High Seas…Medium High Seas. I promise you pictures and an article from that battle.

Now as you may have heard I am just a few weeks, I hope, away from all new ships. As soon as I have some and get them painted up I will write up an article on the new ships. But for now I have nothing. L Unless you want me to put in a tease with these pictures. You tell me, Problem is I do not know when the new ships will be in production.

“I want to thank Ed Teixeira of TWO HOUR WARGAMES for pushing around some WW2 minis and showing me around the "NUTS" rules. Ed has many game titles under TWO HOUR WARGAMES which includes the award winning ALL THINGS ZOMBIE series. We had a great time playing against the system and "killin stuff". The THW rules are quick and fun. Ed wants to get out and game more and I just want to have time to do the same. Anyone else want to try some man-to-man skirmish rules we can try to drag Ed in on it and or get together any scale any side.”
