Well, it's newsletter time, which means a President's message to the Society. But first, a lyrical interlude... Birds flying high, you know how I feel, Sun in the sky, you know how I feel, Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel, It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life, for me. And I'm feeling... good. I'm feelin' good. Have you recognized the song? It's a catchy tune. With a smooth groove. But today it was the lyrics, not the musicality, that grabbed me most when I heard it. I'm making a big change in my life. At age 40, I'm about to part from a decent gig with the employer I've had for the last 15+ years. I'll be in full-time pursuit of a new education. A new career path. It begins by entering law school this fall --- to be accom- panied by all the ensuing work, expenses, and stresses. Taking career risks. Taking significant financial risks. This is new for me. I've often let life lead me around, so-to-speak. Not feeling in control. How are things for you? I'm interested to know. Do you feel in control of where your life is headed? Are you secure? Or perhaps just secure enough to keep you from taking chances? Are you comfortable? Or perhaps just comfortable enough not to risk taking the next step towards something that would be more meaningful to you? Maybe you're reasonably comfortable, for now, but still concerned about where your industry's future is headed? Perhaps you're concerned about economic and job futures? Perhaps technological or political policy changes threaten your livelihood? Are you concerned about your retirement? Finances? Are you happy? Fulfilled? Are you making a difference? Are you influential in the way you'd hoped? What else do you want in life or out of life? Is there knowledge or a skill or an educational pursuit that might make you better prepared than others to weather storms of worry and concern? Preparedness can sometimes alleviate those concerns. There are certainly less-extreme options than quitting work, as I'm doing, to go back to school full-time. My choice is not everyone's to make. Along with the expenses of tuition, fees, and books, my particular endeavor essentially requires I resign from my job -- foregoing accrued company benefits and at least a year's income or more. At the age I'll then be when coming out of law school, I expect to need to have performed very well academically, particularly during first year, which is apparently a year that's a very important factor toward one's future legal employment. Also, it's essentially a Bar Association requirement (equating to an ethics violation against admittance to the Bar) that first year law students limit outside work. By all means, if it were reasonably compatible with my family situation and if it were compatible with the law school system here in Lincoln, I'd just go part-time. But part-time law school isn't an option, here. For most members of the LOMA Society, however, you have career paths you'll continue to enjoy and no interest whatever in becoming a god forsaken lawyer. Along your existing path, it's likely you could be pursuing additional continuing education in a relatively risk-free manner. Sure, there'll be some sacrifices to make. Time commitments. Some costs. Some risks. Some loss of free time. But there's no need to abandon your safety net. Dabble. Stick a toe in. Test the waters once again. Consider that many of our employers provide various forms of educational reimbursement, which I confidently predict not all of us are effectively using. There are many opportunities being left behind. Too many missed opportunities. Many of us could've taken classes on the side, and perhaps by now, attained an additional degree, a masters, or a professional degree. Perhaps we could've already added a recognized and valued credential. Or learned a computer programming language or a new software application. Three or four or more years from now, how might you look back at the decisions you'll make in the upcoming days, weeks, or months? There are lots of LOMA courses available. If you've already taken quite a few LOMA classes, don't worry. LOMA is like Doritos -- they'll make more. If you haven't already recently done so, check LOMA's latest course offerings online. If you feel good about the educational opportunities you continue to regularly pursue, then congratulate yourself. Good job. You deserve the confidence and preparedness those added skills and that added knowledge can provide. But if you could be doing more to prepare yourself, in advance, for changes and new challenges, if you could feel better about your effort, then make a change. Make that change -- start with the man in the mirror (more music references). Even a small change or first step can get you going. Perhaps start by reading a book or watching a video on a topic of interest to get you started -- something a bit challenging, perhaps. When's the last time you learned something significant that could help your career -- something above and beyond what your co-workers are also learning? Something that would diversify your portfo- lio of skills and set you apart? Or something that would genuinely engage and enliven your mind. A mental refresher that invigorates your sense of potential. Are you 'Feeling Good' that your knowledge and education have you well situated? I can tell you, having simply committed to something that will be hard work, stressful and intense, I feel more free from constraints and limitations, and more in control of my own future. If you want to feel good within a often worrisome world and be more prepared than those around you for an ever-changing environment, then go out and gain useful knowledge, learn marketable and useful skills. Keep sharp. Stay crisp. Let's continue learning and challenging ourselves. I want to live in a society of people who take responsibility for their futures and challenge themselves to succeed. I want to be around people trying to take risks and fulfill dreams -- people trying to better themselves. How about you? I think you do, too.. Because many years ago, that was part of why I'd joined the LOMA Society. The idea was a Society of people who challenged themselves by pursuing excellence through continuing education. Again, we're an organization built around rewarding and pursuing excellence through continuing professional education. Let's set the pace. Let's lead. Good lord, I've gotten emotive. Hopefully, not too preachy. But this all comes from the heart, so, ridicule away, if you must. Tell me your stories, if you must. Or just come along and enjoy more lyrics as I sing... ...Con’t on Page 5.... Daniel J. Kohl Daniel J. Kohl Daniel J. Kohl Daniel J. Spring Breakfast Meeting, March 22, 2012 at Mahoney State Park The LOMA Society of Nebraska held it’s annual Spring Breakfast Meeting at Mahoney State Park on Thursday, March 22nd. After serving a hot breakfast to guests, president Dan Kohl

welcomed the speaker for the meeting. The guest speaker for this years Spring Breakfast Meeting was Jim Webster. Jim is a retired Senior VP from Citigroup. His topic -was Banking and Insurance Compliance.

Jim gave some background of the bank-ing industry and how they developed re-lationships with insurance and annuity companies. Jim shared that he worked in California in the banking and savings & loan industry. He talked about the concept of “debt cancellation”. Jim covered how major banks wanted to get into insurance underwriting, but regu-lations in many states prevented it. New regulations in the 1990’s allowed banks to own and run insurance companies.

Board Meeting Minutes: LOMA Board Meeting –Held March 22, 2012

9:40 am – Board Mtg Begins With only 5 board members present do we have a quorum? Dan: suggestion to include more information about upcoming speaker in event emails. Jonathan then asked him to elaborate more so he knows exactly what he is looking for. Past minutes were accepted by board. Jonathan: asked about qualifications to be a member of the Society. He wants to promote membership at Lincoln Financial, and talk with management about value of membership. Denise: closed old safety deposit box with only a minor charge. 2011 budget is ready to go to Steve McKern for his review. Ruth: food and service today with new vendor were ok, could have used a larger quantity. Ran out of scrambled eggs and fruit near the end. Also had to wait a little bit for them to bring more coffee. Sally: member count at 150; a few more are expected. Board agreed that prorated membership after breakfast event would be $60.00 for the remainder of the year. Decline in membership could be due to change in company reimbursement policies. General discussion:

Idea of inviting guests from member companies that may be involved in decision making – who could help sup-port and promote membership and covering dues. All with the idea of stirring up support and keeping our membership strong.

Seminar – no volunteers to become the seminar director. Shall we go ahead or cancel for the year? Threw out

ideas of possible keynote speakers; how we could still do the seminar and who might help.

Dan shared his great news that he’s been accepted to UNL’s Law College. At this point he plans to fulfill the entire year as president.

Next Meeting is the Spring Dinner at The Embassy Suites in La Vista 5/17/12 10:20 am – Board Meeting ends Thanks Sally for taking notes for me! Respectfully Submitted Karla Schroeder Secretary
